Focusmate.com is great too if you have trouble focusing. You schedule sessions anytime you'd like and work with a real person on a task from around the world for 50 minutes. When your session starts you tell the person what you're working on, and if you are going to mute your camera, and then listen to them as well, and then you get to work. When the session is over a chime rings and you both talk about your progress and then move on to the next session or leave for the day. I love it.
Hi Lee, Not sure if you read the comments from your older vids, but I've just got to say that for the last four days I've been trying your 50-minute time blocking method and, WOW! Those 50 mins rocket past, don't they?! I'm sooo focussed now and getting so much done, I finish each day almost with a satisfied smirk on my face rather than the "better luck tomorrow" glum self-talk. I exclude all distractions and put my phone on flight mode. And I've just finished a client piece that I thought would take me another couple of days! So I just wanted to thank you for making this video. It's really helped me and I'm very grateful to you.
I'm working on my first book for an Aussie publisher and I am telling you what....It's a struggle to balance everything! I am thankful for the reminder of it won't happen unless you make time for it! :) Thanks!!!!!!
Thanks Lee! I feel like so many professionals tell you to never sleep and just GO GO GO MAKE ART CONSTANTLY. And it’s exhausting your right. You really learn more by stepping back and managing your time ! As a student I appreciated hearing this 👍🏻
Yep, I have heard that forever too. All nighters one after another. You should always be working and busy. No weekends or evenings should be free. It's nuts! For me this idea started in college where everyone would brag about doing all nighters. Now when someone tells me they always do all nighters, I just think they don't know how to manage their time very well. (Note: we all have "busy" times and a few all nighters might be required, but it shouldn't be the normal way of working).
This is so SO good, man! I'm listening to this in the background while I work on a commission, but I'm going to watch it again tonight after the kids are in bed and apply some of this GOLD!! Thanks Lee!
Hey Lee! you are right, ALWAYS exhausted and just started this job aside my day jobs... no time for pleasure creativity anymore, and that's it.BURN OUT. Thanks for the advices on the softwares, and the scheduling, somehow I realize that even if I want to be a professional, I act like a circus acrobat too much!
Thanks so much for these tips, they are very valuable! I just downloaded Daymap and I like it a lot! I used to do the same in my physical journal, but it is much better when you can edit things in a less destructive manner and can shift things around :)
So glad you explained this Lee. I went to ACCD too. I did EXACTLY this, but I figured it out on my own because I had to to get through school and graduate. Anyone who watches and uses this system will reap tremendous benefits AND won't have to learn it the hard way. Thanks for the reminder and sharing this with the community.
This "busy" lifestyle for me started at ACCD. I worked from the second I got up, until the second I went to bed. And even then I was always behind. I was so stressed out that it really took a toll. When I graduated and moved to Portland, I had a shared studio. I was always the first one in and the last one to leave. Finally one day one of the other artists said "What the heck are you doing, go have some fun!" I was so immersed in those work habits I literally didn't know what she was talking about! Then I looked at it and I was working 60-80 hours a week for YEARS. With no real system in place for managing work load, etc. Now I'm down to less than a 40 hour work week and get just as much done as I did before!
I definitely agree with scheduling less, When I was in school I only would take 3 classes per semester vs the standard 4. Especially for design courses. It was a very smart choice I made lol.
Thank you very much, i've struggling with this for years. I don't even think that i can go that way. Really enlightening and calming myself. I just very loved drawings back then, but once i work as an artist this job is really exhaust me. This video is reaaeallyy helped me. Thank you very much for sharing this, Lee.
I needed to hear this right now XD exhausted is the perfect summary of what I'm feeling. Thanks for the reminder to FOCUS on ONE THING to keep from burning out
Clickup is fantastic. You recommended it in the SVS podcast (I think that was where I heard you mention it before) and I have found it to be very helpful and intuitive. Thanks for sharing your suggestions on how to be more productive. I would double-check the dropbox link, as it didn't seem to be working - there was an error message that the link wasn't found. Thanks!
Thanks for doing this! Love it so far! one small suggestion when showing your your notes: maybe put them on a horizontal page so the screen is mostly filled with the info and easier to read :) keep it up!
Thanks for sharing Lee! I know I have a hard time scheduling my time. I'll look into Daymap. It might be pretty helpful for me. I had a fairly good schedule until my Second daughter was born - now its kind of all over the place since I've been work from home a lot. So these tips should help get back to balance.
Hey Lee, awesome vid! I get really overwhelmed with a lot of tasks so I am a huge fan of the MIT (most important task) method which is pretty similar to what you got going on here. I really struggle with my freelance illustration stuff when I also work full time as a graphic designer. Do you have any tips for someone who only has a few hours a night to actually get some of this stuff done? I just sometimes feel like I spend the whole time available to me just getting going and then I am out of time.
Hi Lee! I've listened to all 3 point perspective episodes over the past couple months and really wanna kick my butt into gear. I'm currently trying to cartoonise a dog for a childrens book I want to self publish. Any tips on character creation, backgrounds and rendering? Looking forward to all future videos! Chris.
Hello Lee! This was helpful! Thank you for this! I was looking up the daymap tool, but it is only for apple users. D you know a tool that works similar on a windows PC (or android phone)? Thank you!
I don't know of one specifially for the Android or PC, but the Clickup app is browser based, so you can use that without any problems. ANd it's free! : )
@@leewhite134 I am already currently trying ClickUp, but it's quite overwhelming ... And I cannot see how to display several fields per day (like, illustration, personal, kids, etc.) as you show in daymap. Have you tried that out in ClickUp? Thank you a lot!
Hey Lee, you use Mac based software, in the future could you perhaps suggest Windows apps as well? Not everyone has Mac systems to do their work with. Would be really helpful, thanks!
I wish I could help about that. Unfortunately I don't know anything about Windows software. But if you find some alternatives, let me know what they are.
trello.com is another good option for project tracking. I've been using it for a while. I'm going to have to give clickup a look though. I like the added level of organization there.

I see this video right as I'm procrastinating on work... Thanks for the kick in the butt, Lee.
