I lived on Crete for a total of 17 months. Raki is great because you can also use it as aftershave and as a disinfectant. 😜 Dakos salad is also one of my favorites. It originated in a very remote and secluded region of Crete, in the South. The people just took their old bread and grated fresh tomatoes on top of it, plus the cheese. So simple, healthy, and delicious!

it's not exactly old bread, its παξιμάδι, some type of hard-bread that lasts for months without spoiling.

@@envy3353 Thanks for clarifying that! It's just perfect because it absorbs the grated tomatoes and olive oil while staying crunchy.

    the "cake" is revani.
it's made with semolina and eggs, also has lemon/orange zest in it.
then it's soaked in thin syrup, and topped with coconut sprinkles.

20:36 - On that frame , my dear friends , you can see the face of a man that tastes for the first time some really good cretan lamb.
A man that accents to heavens after the tenderness and juiciness of the chops are dancing inside his mouth.
As a matter of fact, this kind of reaction , sometimes, is also triggered by local Cretans (myself included) , even though they have tasted lamb multiple times.
This is one of those experiences that you will probably remember for life. Like the memory of you doing bungee jumping , the birth of your newborn baby, the smile of your wife greeting you after a long day at work...
This , is the power of "Paidakia". (Greek for "Lamb Chops")

This is the first time I see Bougatsa, and it conquer me immediately. I really want to go to Greece to eat it!
The owner of the bakery is so nice, and the spinach pie looks delicious and perfect for breakfast!
The dessert of milk pudding and racki after lunch should be a perfect match to make you look more energetic!

First of all to all the people who argue about if Greek food is the best or not
I’m a fairly big guy and big eater
I used to spend 4-5 months a year in Greece and 7-8 months in the USA
    When I was in Greece
I would not eliminate any food from my daily meals
Instead I would eat a lot more desserts
I would eat a ton of bugatsa, douliumbes, kariokes and galaktobouriko
    On almost a daily basis
Plenty of bread with my salad
    So after my vacations
I would go home and I would notice that I lost a lot of weight
As soon as I was in the states I would watch my food intake
And I would gain a lot of weight
So yes Greek food is the best
    ❤️🇬🇷

Your problem is that you are bulimic and obese, it doesn't matter that you gain weight. And here in Greece someone will say the opposite. Believe me, there is no thin or healthy person anywhere in the world if they eat what you said in Greece. We are the first in obesity Europe, first in childhood diabetes, depression in the sky and you tell us that it is America's fault that you are getting fat and not that you don't stop eating. Strongest liquor in Alcohol in Greece is Tsipouro . Same colour same product that raki and wine is produced ( grapes ) but different distillery proccess . But also something i forgot , its always on the producers hand on how many alcohol points they want to produce their liquor so is kinda random depending to the producers choice .

The "dakos" bread dish with the tomato salsa looked incredible. I was doing a quick search and found out that it is not something commercially available but if you can find a whole wheat multi grain bread and let it go stale if will work as a good substitute. I don't care for the dipping in water part but I think if you put the tomato salsa on the bread an hour before eating it will probably soak in enough. A few YT videos show dousing it in olive oil before adding the salsa as well. Thanks for the great video and definitely enjoying yoru European tour. #Crete #ChopstickTravel

You can say that it is more Arab and Persian than Turkish ! But why ?
We have been in contact with the Persians since Alexnder the Great and the Arabs/Egyptians since Cleopatra !
In fact, during the Byzantine Empire, the Palace Chefs would ask for new foods from the entire Empire to feed the Emperor well !
Then you can reed the book of Epicurious and see that those testy food are not new at all !
Feta cheese is mentioned in the illiad by Homer and since suger did not exist yet ... only honey was used for preparing desserts !

Hi. New subscriber here. That food looks incredible! Very good commentary throughout. I'm a UK born Greek Cypriot. Most of the food you showed looks a lot like Cypriot food, but if you can, in the future go to Cyprus, as we have food over there that is also spectacular! John
