Really enjoyable watching the modular model railway come to life. The yard area has detail everywhere you look, with just the right balance of function and clutter.
Really glad you enjoyed it Rod! It's been great fun to add the detail to the yard. I may still play around with the positions of some little details before it's all locked down but it's great to have the module pretty much finished now. Thanks for watching 🤩

You're right though, the static grass does make a big difference and it's great to have some figures around the place too - more of that to come in future episodes! Thanks for watching 🤩
Hi mate, only just got around to seeing this. I really like the sidings: as you have rightly said every heritage railway has a siding of forgotten vehicles and ‘one day we’ll get around to it’ restorations! I was going to suggest a few tarpaulins here and there once you have fitted the various minutiae and cameos about the place. I find those waxed sweet wrappers particularly useful as the don’t crease easily and will take spray paint really well so you can weather them effectively 😉 Another thing I like are old pencil rubber housings (ie the metal bit that holds it in place ✏️ at the top) as they can be slightly mangled and weathered and look like rusty old containers, etc. 🤓 The undulations really do make it look so much more realistic and I agree foamboard is a brilliant (and quick) method to use, so I am going to blatantly steal that for any small undulations in future 😂💡 Great stuff, going to watch these tone once I’ve got myself a cuppa! 😎🍻👍🍀
Yeah, there's definitely plans to create more clutter around the various sidings on the layout. I have some ideas for doing tarpaulins and if there's time I'd like to do a full train of heavily weathered/rusted stock that just sits in the sidings. All those little details that can just be added to the scene now that the main scenics are pretty much there. Thanks for watching 😃
Great work. I was suggested to view this from the SMS newsletter, and I am impressed, so I have subscribed so that I can see more of your work. Teaching an old (76yo) bloke how to do things is very welcome.
Ah good to know, I wondered why this video was suddenly getting more views all of a sudden 😅 Glad you enjoyed it, there's nearly 30 videos in this layout build series alone and I'm currently in the process of building a TT:120 layout for an exhibition later this later so there's always new tips and tricks to enjoy. Really glad you're enjoying them and finding them interesting too! The PVA is from Everbuild (there's a link in the the description) but I think there's a lot of glues out there that use a similar nozzle. Thanks for watching 🤩

So glad you enjoyed it! It's definitely nice to have pretty much finished the scenery on this module. Just need a backscene and a few touch ups here and there. Thanks for watching 🤩
That was fantastic. The module looks so much better now, and the sidings look so good, adding the grass at the end of the sidings really gives it the impression of a unused feeling 😀
Thanks Adam, it's so nice to have this module now (mostly) complete! The overgrown siding look is something I've been wanting to try for ages after half attempting it on the 009 layout, so I'm really pleased with how they've ended up. Thanks for watching 😃
Yeah after staring at the bare baseboards for so long it's great to finally have the scenery completed! Just a few little details to add here and there but for now work shifts to the Station module next. Thanks for watching 😃
Gosh, that;s looking so nice. The dry stone wall, especially, with the unkempt grass and shrubs adds quite a bit of appeal, I''d say. Also that rusting track in the overgrown siding seems very typical of what one might find on a real heritage railway. Well done!
Thanks! I have to admit, I went into it kind of blind with only a vague idea of what I wanted to do so that fact it's come out looking like this is really pleasing. Yes I can't count the number of times I've visited heritage railways and seen sidings filled with rusty rolling stock where the track is barely visible - it was the one constant thing from my heritage railway trip last year! 😅 Thanks for watching 👍
This has reminded me I have a siding that needs to have some over growing grass/shrubs to at some point. Really like how the progress you've made on this module, it's really come to life. Looking forward to the next update. Cheers

Great job. I’m just doing the baseboard for my first layout (N Gauge) after years of Aircraft and Armour diorama modelling. Can’t wait to get stuck in! Ian
It's great to see the MPD and sidings finally come to life, with those excellent figures and details really selling the scene. A top notch job! Have you perhaps considered fixed distant signals on the approaching boards to the station, perhaps? My only peeve, and this is because I nitpick when it comes to railway signalling so apologies, is that the points closest to the 'box that you have put a handpoint lever next to wouldn't have been a handpoint. The other one is fine, mind you, as it would have no bearing on traffic, but the former would be controlled by the 'box as part of a crossover with both sets of points moved by one lever. This protects the running lines into the platforms from errant and unauthorised movements from the yard. But like I said, it's a nitpick with everything else seemingly flawless! Keep up the good work!
Fixed Distants are definitely on the list to add to the outer modules - they'll probably be too close in reality but the whole thing is massively compressed anyway, even for a heritage railway 😅 I knew there would be some logical reason those points wouldn't have levers! To be honest it was based off something we have a Spa Valley Railway where the points into the yard/shed are operated from the ground - although it's not a crossover. To be honest though there's plenty of issues with the signalling and points anyway so I try not think about it too much 😁 Thanks for watching 👍
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy that's the thing with signalling that I've always found when it came to the semaphore age: you have your principles book about fifteen centimeters thick, and the exceptions addendum is seven times as long!

Fantastic video mate. The yard has come out looking really nice and its good to see one module completed. Looking forward to the station module build. - Nicholas.
Thanks Nicholas, it’s really good to have it completed. The station module will be a different kettle of fish entirely so should give some nice variety. Thanks for watching 😃

Sorry if a bit of a dumb question when your spreading grass and ballast out of that cup thingy is there a reason the clip is being pushed to the ground everytime
No dumb questions here! It's only for the grass which is "static grass". The clip helps to create a circuit between the cup and the baseboard which allows the individual fibres to stand up on end like blades of grass. I've done a tutorial on static grass here if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/9Gb2bMfve0s/v-deo.htmlsi=1zAqXEQVxYqx9tLQ Thanks for watching 😃
Hi David, in the past I've used this technique: ua-cam.com/video/HzT3P2pYsss/v-deo.html I do have a plan for something slightly different on the modular layout, though currently it's not a priority so it could be a while before I get round to it. Thanks for watching 😃
Hiya, yes it definitely needs to be dried out before use if the ground is wet/damp - personally I tend to collect it in the Summer when it's already dry. Baking it (or microwaving is another option) is a good way to get rid of any bacteria too. Finally I run it through a sieve to get just the really fine particles so that it becomes a dust, otherwise it's over scale. It's a bit of work initially but I do it once a year and then end up with a tub that I use on all my projects over the next 12 months. My neighbours must think I'm very odd when they see me in the garden though... to be honest they're probably not wrong! Thanks for watching 😃
I find whenever I do my 2nd layer of static grass, it ends of crushing my first layer when I apply the glue. Do you use a spray bottle? What mix is your pva to water ratio? Love your layout series! It's awesome to see the process from start to finish
Haha, yep you definitely want to use a layering spray of some kind to add the longer layers. I've done a more in depth tutorial on my static grass technique if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/9Gb2bMfve0s/v-deo.html Thanks for watching 😃
I've always found overgrown sidings with unused stock in them to be very interesting. I bet if you got a fog machine and turned out the lights it would also make it look spooky.
Hi! I have only just found your channel by chance. I have watched three episodes so far this evening and have found all of them highly interesting, all with with great tips and tricks . Great videos! One small pont, that stands out, for me, anyway, is the lack of a gantry crane - if that is the correct name (?!) - for lifting heavy equipment such as steam engine boilers off road haulage low loader semi-trailers or flat car railway wagons. A suggestion for you to consider: How would a grantry cane look, maybe, in front of the mainenance/loco shed with steam engine boiler under it, just left of track 1 to engine shed? I know the clock is ticking, but, maybe, that is something to consider for a future upgrade. Carry on the great work, very enjoyable to watch! With best regards, Andy
Hi Andy, really glad you've enjoyed the videos you've seen so far. It's a valid point but generally I'm basing this layout off my own experiences at the heritage railways I've visited and volunteer at. At Spa Valley Railway in particular I believe we tend to hire in a crane for a day and co-ordinate a series of moves to get as much use out of it as possible. Meanwhile, inside the shed we have special jacks for lifting locos and rolling stock up so there isn't really a need (or space) for a permanent gantry crane. It's a similar issue on my layout too, there just isn't really space in the yard area for a large structure like that. It's already incredibly tight getting locos in and out due to the curves leading to the shed. Hope that makes sense and thanks for watching 😃
Hi Gary, while I see your point I think it's unlikely the heritage railway would have a forklift lying around. The pallets would most likely have been moved by hand with the items placed on top of them individually just to keep them off the ground. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy given the weight of most metal components I would expect a forklift on site most components would be too heavy to manhandle. SecondhandForklifts are not expensive
@@garylong7599 In my experience at the heritage railways I've been involved with (which is ultimately what I'm trying to recreate) things like this generally have been moved by hand. It's not necessarily a cost thing but more of an issue of space for something that would only be used once in a blue moon. That's not to stop anyone else from modelling it if they want to though.
All the links are in the description already. Unfortunately the quality of the drystone walling has degraded over the last few batches I've ordered so I don't think I can really recommend it anymore 😞 Thanks for watching 👍
Hey bro so quick question, am I doing it wrong? I’m starting an n scale layout and instead of using foam boards from Home Depot or Lowe’s I used styrofoam for the base and going to use clay for the mountain and tunnel
Hi there, do you mean you're using styrofoam as the baseboard to lay the track on or just for the base of the scenics. If you're using it as a baseboard, styrofoam will be nice and light but it does tend to be more delicate. Personally I make my baseboards out of wood, it's more work but they're much stronger and last longer. If it's just for creating the basic shape of the scenery then styrofoam is fine, in fact I've done exactly that on other parts myself. Whenever you're using styrofoam though you need to make sure not to use any glue, paints or materials that react with the styrofoam and cause it to melt, otherwise you'll have a bigger problem. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 👍
@@internationalthrills5960 I haven't done it with clay myself - I would imagine it would be quite heavy and prone to breaking up. Personally I used chicken wire and mod roc to create my tunnel: ua-cam.com/video/E7NSgeH6cvE/v-deo.html
I'm actually planning on showing that in an upcoming episode, now that I've had a bit of practice! Yes just glued to the stick temporarily - gives you something to hold while painting and means it can be stuck into some polystyrene while it dries. Thanks for watching 😃
This does look great. Im building a railway so this series is definitely helping. Just a couple questions, where did you get that foam wall from? It looks really good and i wou.dnt mind trying it for my self. Also, when you applied the second layer of grass, did you use spray glue or just pva put over the 2mm static grass?
There’s links in the description for all the products used - although I will say the quality control on the foam walling has really taken a step down lately which is a real shame. For the 4mm layer of grass I used the WWS layering spray like I did for the 6mm patches. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
Great video hope to see at the model railway show at spa valley. Talking of model railway shows I will be displaying my layout at its first exhibition. What's the best advice you got for exhibiting a layout.
Amazing, hope to see you there! My advice would be have something running constantly! The general public just want to see a train go past so make sure something is moving at all times. I actually did a video on my first experience with taking a layout to an exhibition a last year so it might be worth checking that out. Thanks for watching 👍
It'll keep you on your toes then. I'd recommend having a few operators - ideally three. One to operate, one to answer questions/talk to the public and one on break, then you all swap round every hour to keep things fresh 👍
Good point! For me I use the filler around so many different surfaces of the layout that I wouldn’t be able to get away with just mixing up brown though. Thanks for watching 😃
Hi! I’m really all about joking in your channel, but whenever I look at your channel, there is no clear button to join. Am I just being blind? Could you or someone else explain how I could become a channel member please?
Hi there, here's a direct link for link for you: ua-cam.com/channels/x7OfzRi8-nPLyYuuU74l4Q.htmljoin Alternatively if you're on desktop there should be a Join button underneath every video (it's usually next to the Subscribe button) and if you head over to my channel page there should be a Membership tab which will prompt you to join if you're not a Member already.
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy which heritage railway are you involved with
looks great, im definately getting embsay vibes
Glad to hear it! I didn't want to copy it completely but the general atmosphere was something I wanted to try and recreate. Thanks for watching 😃
Where did you get the dry stone wall can you put a link up because I really need some 😅
All the links are in the description already. Unfortunately the quality of the drystone walling has degraded over the last few batches I've ordered so I don't think I can really recommend it anymore 😞 Thanks for watching 👍
Love the videos. Would love to see some full track running though.
Thanks Sam, that’s definitely the plan once the layout is complete but I have done running sessions in the past on this layout. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy ok have you done mountains with clay before? I’m including a tunnel in mine
@@internationalthrills5960 I haven't done it with clay myself - I would imagine it would be quite heavy and prone to breaking up. Personally I used chicken wire and mod roc to create my tunnel: ua-cam.com/video/E7NSgeH6cvE/v-deo.html
Nice video 👍how do you paint your figures, did you glue them to the stick temporarily?
I'm actually planning on showing that in an upcoming episode, now that I've had a bit of practice! Yes just glued to the stick temporarily - gives you something to hold while painting and means it can be stuck into some polystyrene while it dries. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Great stuff, I'll look forward to that. 👍
What thicknesses is the foam board?
5mm, there should be a link to it in the description. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy only problem is its an end to end layout but thanks
It'll keep you on your toes then. I'd recommend having a few operators - ideally three. One to operate, one to answer questions/talk to the public and one on break, then you all swap round every hour to keep things fresh 👍
7:09 mini HENRY hoover? Hmmmm why does that aound fimilar
I used it on the channel for quite a while although I've now since upgraded to something a bit more powerful. Thanks for watching 😃
Good Job.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 😃
Great video

Really glad you enjoyed it Nick! Thanks for watching 😃
Is that a 3rd 16" I spot behind you in your intros? 😂
Maybe… 😅 Thanks for watching 👍
Happy Railway Series Day
Marking it in the calendar now 😅 Thanks for watching 👍
If you mix the brown acrylic into your filler you won't get a bright white patch if it cracks or chips in the future.
Hi there, here's a direct link for link for you: ua-cam.com/channels/x7OfzRi8-nPLyYuuU74l4Q.htmljoin
Alternatively if you're on desktop there should be a Join button underneath every video (it's usually next to the Subscribe button) and if you head over to my channel page there should be a Membership tab which will prompt you to join if you're not a Member already. That's where I post all the behind the scenes content and early access videos. Hope that helps or let me know if you're still having issues and thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy cheers! I really appreciate that!
Is the trainspotting guy Tom Scott?
Nope it's a scan of me that's been 3D printed by Modelu 😉 Thanks for watching 👍
Sorry I didn’t watch the day it came out I was outside
No worries, it's not compulsory to watch the premiere after all! Thanks for watching 😃
