I'm a paddle nerd and have owned and trialed dozens of paddles. The 16 mm Mach 2 Forza totally blew me away. Cntrol/sweet spot are insane and the power is quite exceptional. I usually have to add weight to an 8 oz paddle to get deep serves, but this paddle did not need it. It is now my go-to paddle, even replacing my DBD which I thought would never happen.
Nice! It really is a great paddle. Glad it’s working for you 👍
Hey! Are you still using the volair? How is the spin holding up? any other issues?
@ Still using it. Spin is just as good as day 1. he sweet spot is HUGE.
@gao57009 oh thanks man! 😊 I am ordering one right now! ✅️
Liked. Automatically when i get on any of your videos. Good job.
Great video man! The 16mm is now my current go to paddle of choice.
Thanks John, going to give the Mach 2 a try.
Thanks John. I used your promo code and ordered a 16mm today - also got the 20% discount that is running this week from Volair.
Same. I got mine 4 hours ago!
@@fookbia8875 Me three. 20% off, plus the 10% discount code came out really good. I almost ordered the new Ronbus instead, but, much higher price.
Bought one and I really enjoy playing with it. The spin comes in hard when I have to make a desperate hit. Great serves. Fast at the kitchen. I am a recreational player and this paddle improved my game. Thanks for the discount!
Nice, glad to hear it’s working for you 👍
Sounds like our experiences with these were very similar. I’m glad you did a review, I think these are sneaky good and deserve some attention.
I’m curious to see if you two are correct about a trend toward more control oriented paddles. I think we are still moving towards power.
Hey Braydon, I was happy to see you did a review, too - and that our experiences were so similar. Your review reminded me that I forgot to mention the angle of the ball trajectory. It took me a while to dial in the 16mm paddle because the ball comes off high compared to what I'm used to. The 14mm felt more natural to me in that regard, with its lower ball trajectory.
@@johnkewpickleball higher trajectory than the typical 16mm?
@@iugradmark paddles may still get more powerful but I’m thinking we’ll see more power type paddles in forgiving standard and widebody shapes like the M2F. Widebody paddles lost their appeal in the past because you couldn’t do as much offensively with them but that’s changing with tech like thermoforming. Now you can sort of get the best of both worlds to worlds and once people realize that then we’ll start to see more standard and widebody paddles out there.
@@johnkewpickleball I’m glad you see that too ha. I wish I had a good way to quantify it but once someone points it out and you pay attention to it you can see the difference.
Bought the 16mm today with your code. Been using the Gearbox Pro Power Elite but I wanted to sharpen my drop and reset skills. Both will be in my bag. This video helped me make the decision.
I bought the Mach 2 Forza today. Should arrive in the mail soon. Thanks for the review. Just started pickleball this week. I didn't want to start out with a $40 paddle, and have to relearn the feel and techniques of the swing from a cheap paddle. So I decided to go with a decent starting paddle.
you being new to pickleball, this paddle will help your game so much just right off the bat
I was at first skeptical of this paddle after playing with the Mach 1 forza. But found that the more I play with it. The more I like it. Especially at the kitchen. The spin is no joke with this paddle. I play the 16 and found that I can generate the same power as the Mach 1 forza. One quick note since u mentioned the ruby. I didn’t notice anything significantly different or better hitting the ruby from my Mach 1 forza.
what weight did your Mach 2 come in at stock? Mine is 8.03
I’ve been playing with the 16mm for two days now. My drops are so much better now and I did notice more power than my Mach 1 Forza 16mm. Happy with the purchase.
what weight did your Mach 2 come in at stock? Mine is 8.03
Fantastic review! Spot on. My only personal note is I consider this an "All Court Paddle" rather than a "Control Paddle"
Then what is the Mach 1 Forza?
The Mach 1 Forza was already one of the best looking paddles around, but the Mach 2 is even better due to the omission of Julian Arnold's name and slogan. That blemish was almost enough to dissuade me from buying the Mach 1 Forza.
I’m not sure if you had a ton of time to play with the Mach 1 Forza yet but I heard it’s similar to the R1 pulsar. Your data suggest the forza offers better control based on spin, pop, and hardness numbers. What are your thoughts on the two?
Hi John, thanks for all the great reviews and testing database. I’m wondering if you can help me understand something. For the past 8 months I have been playing with a Ronbus 2.16. It is a bit soft but has incredible spin which I use on my serve and backhand slice returns. However, I wanted to get a paddle with equal spin to the Ronbus but more power for my forehand drives. So after looking at your reviews and database I tried two different paddles. The Volair Mach 2 Forza and the Pickleball Apes Pro Line Energy S. However, neither nearly got the spin I get from the 2.16, even though they have similar spin numbers in your database to the 2.16. I’ve returned them both and continue to look for a paddle with similar spin and more power. I just don’t understand why the 2.16 spins so much better for me than those other two paddles. Maybe the way I hit the ball or direction of the texture or something. Next I might try the Ruby, but just not sure now how it will perform for me compared to the 2.16. Very confusing for me.
Very interesting. I wonder if your 2.16 is just an anomaly with out of spec texture? Because the M2F gets universally amazing spin from all reviewers
@@johnkewpickleball
I think I figured out why my Ronbus R2.16 gets so much spin. It seems to be about technique with the short handle and wide paddle. I bought a Ruby and played with it for a month. It has a much longer handle and I adapted to holding it near the end. I get more power but less spin on my backhand slice. When I went back to my Ronbus R2.16 with the very short handle I had to hold it near the head. Little power but crazy spin. Like ping pong. However it now is very hard for me to go back to a short handle. My Ronbus just doesn’t feel comfortable anymore. All about technique required to play with a certain shape. And we adapt over time to what we use. Interesting!
How would you choose between the 16 and 14 with the added weight? Am coming from a dbd14 and not sure which one to choose
I'd love to see a review or comparison in the future of Gruvn Muvn 16 S, seems to be similar category
I do plan to review the MUVN 16S
The spin on the 16 vs 14mm could be attributed entirely to grit.. I have both a 16 and 14mm in the Mach 1 and the 14mm feels like it has 2-3x the grit from factory and it hasn’t worn away at all. The 16mm version I have is smooth in comparison
Do you prefer the 14mm or 16mm??
John, I’m looking at getting a 14 mm, and am looking at this, the 6.0 DBD and the Vatic pro flash. I’m seeing that my play style is more suited to a lower weight and less thick paddle. Which would you recommend the best among the 3? Or would you have another recommendation outside of these 3?
Hi, if you like thinner, more lightweight paddles, then the 14mm M2F is a great choice
Seems the 14mm is very close in specs to the BD Infinity surprisingly.
Which do you like better Volair mach 2 16mm or Ronbus R2?
I play the DBD 16mm. Want to grab one of these, torn between the 16mm and 14mm what would you recommend? Is the 14mm easy to drop and dink with? The added pop is appealing but not if it sacrifices too much control.
Yes, I'd say the 14mm M2F is on par with the DBD 16mm in terms of dropping/resetting. If you want to be safe, though, the M2F 16 is a control dream
Any thoughts how this paddle compares to the Joola Scorpeus 14 and 16? Considering that they're the same shape I wonder how different they are.
They're cheaper with far better spin and similar in almost every other category. The 14mm AB Scorpeus has more pop though.
@@TylerGinter Would you say the 16mm Volair is better than the 16 mm CJ Scorpeus? Also between the 14 and 16 which volair is preferable?
@@mike_ikes3427 I bought both the 14mm and 16mm M2F. I like the 16mm better but I come from a 16mm background so I value the extra control. For the price and spin, it's a no brainer over the CJ Scorpeus.
I would imagine it is a similar distinction between the Mach 1 Forza and the Joola Perseus. In my opinion, and most everyone else, the Forza ia the better choice at both thicknesses, even before you consider the far more reasonable price point.
The Mach 2 Forzas are slightly shorter and wider than the Scorpeus, and I think this makes a difference because the sweet spot is noticeably larger on the M2 Forzas. The spin is better on the Forzas, too, which helps in a big way with control. The Scorpeus is a really good paddle, but in my opinion, the M2 Forza edges out the Scorpeus, especially considering the price.
Don’t see the BD Infinity in the serve speed list. Did this video precede its release? I’d also be curious to know the RPMs of the black diamond Infiniti, as I didn’t see it in the black diamond infinity dedicated video. Thanks.
The BDi is in my latest database: www.johnkewpickleball.com/paddle-database
@@johnkewpickleball Perfect, thanks! Appreciate it!
I think for that price I'd bump it up and get the new Gearbox. I'm guessing it will probably have 6 times the lifespan. Don't think I'll go with another carbon faced honeycomb again, they seem all seem a little pricey now with low lifespans. Less than 120 I may reconsider. What are you're thoughts on that?
That's an interesting perspective. Assuming the QC issues have been addressed, the Gearbox Pros may have a longer shelf life than others. But the verdict is still out with the peel ply. I imagine that will be the first to go. Reminds me that I need to re-examine the grit on my Gearbox Pro paddles to see what type of wear they're getting.
Debating if I should keep this paddle. I love the drops and resets. My only con is this paddle twist in my hand when blocking aggressive shots.
Do you have the 16mm or 14mm? The 14 will twist a little more. But you can add some lead or tungsten tape to reduce twisting
What is the new swingweight with the added 6 gram weights to the 14mm?
He said 110
How would you compare the play of the 16mm mach2 to the Scorpius 14mm ?
Gen 2 Scorpius.
This padddle is so interesting that I am debating choosing between the 14 and 16mm versions. Having faster hand speed is super appealing to me but didn’t like the feel of the DBD 14mm compared to the 16mm so wonder if the Mach 2 14 will be the same. Also interested to hear how this compares to the ALW-C 12mm
Same. Similar quandary when considering which Scorpeus model to go with - 14mm (Anna Bright) or 16mm (Collin Johns). I've always found 16mm and elongated more appealing, but if I were to switch to a wide body I feel like I might as well go with the thinner 14mm while I'm at it. That way you can fully get a feel for the advantages and disadvantages of the extreme opposite side of the spectrum.
@@LowDinksHijinxPickleballYeah that was my exact same thinking as well at first. But after buying both I realized that at the end of the day, I personally prefer 16mm paddles over 14mm. The difference between the two is very similar to the difference between any other paddle that comes in both 16 and 14.
I found the Mach 2 14mm to be more plush than the DBD 14mm. I also didn't care for the DBD 14mm due to the very stiff face and smaller sweet spot. But for the M2 Forzas, I couldn't land on a favorite between the 16mm and 14mm
I normally favor 16mm paddles but on the Volaire Mach 1 and Mach 1 Forzas I actually prefer the 14mm models over the 16’s. They’re not that much stiffer feeling than the 16s and the added pop is nice.
which one is better at put away shots. 14mm dbd was too soft for me.@@johnkewpickleball
They are 20% right now. I just noticed someone else write that. And it accepts your 10% discount on top.
Wish the paddle weight was in the charts. If its over 8oz I dont bother.
The Volair website states ave weight of the 14mm is 7.7oz, and the ave of the 16mm is 8oz
So theoretically you could get the 14mm and add lead tape. Essentially giving you the 16mm with a little more pop?
They'll still be a bit different, even if you leaded-up the 14mm. Lead increases power, but decreases pop. Also, the thinner core will always feel a bit stiffer
@@johnkewpickleballcan you do a video on why lead increases power but decreases pop?
@@nicobarraza802 Yes, I do intend to make that video. I've been intending to do it for a while now, but it keeps getting backburnered with all the new paddle releases, haha
@@nicobarraza802 I would say think about playing pickleball with a heavy bat. Long strokes would be easier to gain power but shorter strokes would be harder to generate enough hand speed. Most paddles that are lighter and easier to generate hand speed usually will have more pop because you’re able to generate more energy on short swings. If you add weight no matter where you add it you will start to decrease how fast you can generate energy in short swings. this will depends on each person and their strength however. I personally would say though that John’s punch volley info indicates that there is not a huge difference between the 14mm and 16MM as the difference is only 1 MPH and most paddles fall in between that range which is why the percentage seems dramatic.
That's not what pop is though. Pop is how the ball comes off the paddle face as a result of counter force the paddle face and core apply to the ball moving against it. So when measuring pop we don't account for the paddle moving...only the ball bouncing off the paddle. This is the only way to fairly test for 'pop' across all paddles. Power requires the paddle to be swung. Pop does not. That's why I'd like John to explain why adding lead tap to the paddle would reduce pop, but increase power. I imagine it has something to do with vibrational stiffness.

Question for those that have tried or are using the Mach 2 Forza... I'm really close to ordering one. Yesterday someone at the courts had one and he had had it for only a couple days. It was covered in ball dust. I was wondering if the paddle face is easy to clean or not because I was surprised by the look of his paddle. Any feedback would be appreciated!
Yes, it's easy to clean with any paddle eraser. Volair even includes an eraser with the purchase of the paddle. I love seeing that ball dust, because it means the paddle has great spin
@@johnkewpickleball Thank you!
Johnkew Pickleball do you prefer the Ruby to this paddle?
Personally, yes, the Ruby is still my number one
Awesome, I'd like to try both but the Ruby is out of stock till the end of January. I ordered the Mach 2 Forza yesterday 🤞🏻@@johnkewpickleball
@@johnkewpickleballin what ways would you say the Ruby triumphs over the mach 2?
@@aaronmorgan8864lol I literally did the same thing yesterday
@@azb4221 can you let me know what weight yours comes in at? Mine was 8.03 ounces stock
Maybe my paddle just wasn't as gritty as the ones reviewers got, but I'm not getting mind-blowing spin at all. I get as much as my 6-month-old Ronbus R1 Pulsar.
Which one are you liking more between the two? I have a r1 and I’m debating on getting this paddle
Chris Olson said he often records spin around 1600-1700 when others get 2000 rmp - claiming there are often inconsistent QC issues with spin. (Source: 4 min 39 seconds "The 2023 Pickleball Paddle Awards" - Pickleball studio) - also go to 6:06 in the same video if you like.
@@thehiddenfamily R1 Pulsar (aka Mach 1 Forza; pretty sure Volair copied Ronbus). It just hits harder while maintaining the plush feel. I couldn't generate power with the Mach 2 Forza shape.
Sorry fellow ballers. I'm a spinner. Bought one and sent it back. Has half the spin on the serve as the Mach One. Not impressed.
Great video man! The 16mm is now my current go to paddle of choice.
Thanks for dropping in, good sir! Honestly, I do love this paddle. It's in my top 5 overall right now.
