@tnphysics This particular model does not have springs to separate the backing plate from the clutch disks. Some clutch packs do because the clutch is not used during high rotational speeds of the housing verses the disks so proper clearance and lubrication are critical.
OK, Thanks.. just what I needed to check 45/5-45RFE L/R pack clearance. I couldn't see where to stick any feeler gauge, and ATSG manual didn't cover this aspect.
I'm getting ready to rebuild a 4r70w that I pulled from a 1997 awd Ford explorer. I'm going to be putting it in my 1967 Bronco. Do you have any advice for this trans? parts that may be problematic or tricks to make a better trans?
Hi I got a semi automatic Vauxhall mareva I took the car to be looked at and the guy said the clutch is down to 16 % and i was just thinking how long will the clutch last
Do you have any opinion on the usage of Lubegard additives? I put some (admittedly, the wrong formula) Lubegard Black in the A131L of my 2000 corolla and it's sooooo smooth now. Not supposed to put the black bottle in this car but it's mine, and there isn't anyone to yell at me if I break it so it was one of those "What the hell right??" decisions.
Personally, I always stay away from additives and non-factory fluid. I think that if I want the vehicle to perform the same way it did when it was new, it needs to have the same parts and fluids in it. Best wishes!
So this kind of test can be used when a new kit of clutch pack is placed in the transmission and you wanna know if the tollerances are ok? Or you need to change the snap rings...
What should we do if the clearance is too wide, but not enough to add another disc and steel to take up the slack? I have seen a builder make a shim with a lathe, but what if we don't have access to a lathe?

Great video. This technique makes it look so simple, no special tools required other than a dial gauge and mount plus compressed air. 👍
I know this is an older video but could you tell me how much air pressure you used in the test?
90 psi
Most ford models are around 70 psi according to pts

+Kris Bassett Hi, I am not very familiar with that transmission's common troubles and fixes, sorry I cannot help you there. Best wishes.

So do I check my clearance with wet frictions? Or dry?

Yes, that is correct
+WeberAuto thank you Professor John!
Do you have to use a dial indicator ? Or could I use a feeler gauge between the clutch pack and the snap ring ?
Either way will work

Make sure you have all the required disks. There are steel plates available from Toyoya to adjust the clearance.
Any 2020 I saw this video 9 years later
Professor, the unit is inch or mm??
inch
thank you for this...
So nice
