much judging and reject Sybil and Tom's relationship, but he also fell in love with a maid
otaku neko21 hypocrisy.
I don’t think he was in love with her...just attracted to her, but that’s just how I feel...
I know Robert can be SUCH a hypocrite!!!!!!
Spellboud I still don’t hate the guy tho...
@@pan-opticon No me neither
Poor Cora.
Good for her she never learned that Robert was close to having sex with a maid while she was deadly ill in the next room. Cora found herself in a similar situation a few years later, but while I think she enjoyed the art collector's attention, she did not want to have an affair with him, it was a one-sided sexual attraction.
@@DellaStreet123 What illness did she have? I can't remember.
@@followersoftheoldwayssaget2118Spanish Flu.
@@DellaStreet123 This is completely unrelated to the video but I've always wondered why it's called Spanish flu when it wasn't from Spain, do you know why??
@@Hermione_Granger Media were not censored in Spain and newspapers and periodicals kept the public up about the disastrous impact of the flu -- in other countries, where the disease was downplayed due to censorship, people who had access to news from Spain thought that Spain was hit more severely than other countries, even though it wasn't the case.
And yet he went totally crazy when that painting historian flirted uninvited with Cora.
In that storyline, Cora told Robert to return to the joint bedroom so unless he could swear to not have given any woman the impression feeling more for her than he really did. After a few moments thought, Robert did return -- I suspect remembering this affair with Jane.
Absolutely. It’s quite typical of men to be enormous hypocrites ESPECIALLY when it comes to infidelity.
Well Cora was more to blame
@Jere Niemi how?? Robert literally cheated with Jane, Cora didn't do anything
YES I HATED HIS HYPOCRISY
This felt wrong and extremly out of character for Robert. I hated this plot line so much.
A charming woman would do that to a man, even a good man like lord Grantham. But you are right, it's just the wrighter fitting in another ill thought out plot from his reading of the drama of history
I completely forgot this even happened.
@@Vincisomething That's because it's a silly side plot
I think him being kind was nice to see, but then he went too far.
Lord Grantham is a man and all men can easily be tempted by young women. He’s also a lord too which makes it even easier to get away with!
Lucky Bates came knocking because Robert was going to definitely do the deed.
Robert: "And Bates... could you fetch me a fresh pair of pajama bottoms? I'm afraid I've got a spot of bother here." Bates: "Is everything alright, your Lordship?" Robert: "Oh, yes. Just a bit of a premature... situation. Jane is in here, you see. You know how it can be. Such a saucy number, and now I've gone and made a sauce of my own in my silken pajamas, blast it all."
he did in the next scene

@@tobynsaunders 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I am in stitches laughing at that!! As a big Downton fan!! Christ I wish that'd been written in. Pure Gold!
this was.... so unnecessary. how can you have literal angel cora grantham as your wife and cheat on her, what absolute tomfoolery
Feeling neglected and diminished in his role at Downton, he needed an ego fix, nothing more to it. Sad for the girl.
cora is a bore thats why!!!
If a face like JayZ could cheat on a goddess like Beyonce, no man is infallible to temptation unless great virtue defeats it.
No man is ever happy with the most beautiful women on earth and that's the truth sir, I mean not necessarily being "happy" but it's just the common phenomena works in every man. Nothing could help this in history, nor could anything stop from happening this to a man ever.
Joanie Adams SACRILEGE 😂
The point of this side plot was to show how Robert felt insecure about Cora's new-found independence and perceived distancing herself away from him, when in reality it was just in his head. As well as the increased feelings of loss of control and worthlessness during the war. It's not about right or wrong, but about perspective.
No. If a man cheats on you, it doesn't mean he's intimidated by your independence. It means he's more attracted to another person in that moment
Have you watched Downton? Because it's very obvious what the writers were trying to portray.
I think the fact that the maid looked like a younger version of Cora says a lot about why he fell in love with the maid. He didn't love her, he just missed what he and Cora had at the start.
That and he has a type.
@@readsomebooks666 but Robert didn't marry Cora for her looks! he married her for her money. So yes it says a lot about why he fell in love with the maid.

I made looks like a younger version of Cora? I don’t really see that.
@@oolala53I think they meant that she looks very similar to Cora in her colouring with the striking blue eyes, fair skin and dark hair. Lord Grantham definitely has a type 😅

Possibly overlooked is Clare Calbraith's strong performance as Jane. She is sweet, vulnerable, and gorgeous.
I hated this storyline but the actors did have great chemistry together honestly... and Carson definitely knew what was going on
it was hot loved it she was much prettier than cora and more sincere cora is a stuck up bitch who tore into mrs hughes over her stupid top coat
@Kuchi Kopi she apologized. It's not easy for the gentry to do that to their servants
It'a probably her eyes
The chemistry was undeniable.
Joanie Adams both characters are beautiful in their own ways. It was very wrong of Robert to cheat on Cora. Periodt
Hugh Bonneville is clearly a star and is perfect in this role but the character Robert is a likable dimwit. He loses several fortunes and would be on his way to losing another except for Mary and Tom. He is so often wrong about everything and everyone but darn, he is so great in this role. I admire his skill. He truly becomes Robert in this role and the story does revolve around him in many ways.
I totally agree. I’ve always disliked Robert
Let’s not forget he also sided with the aristocratic doctor when Sybil gave birth, who said there was nothing wrong, which led to her death
Robert is starting to feel threatened because his wife is starting to have other interests besides him.
Nah...
Men cheat because they can.
@@Emy-fv5ny As Dr. Phil is so incredibly fond of saying: "this ain't my first rodeo."
Also because there was a war, and he felt useless
So Robert has a midlife crisis. I can just see Violet making some remark about it being very middle-class of him.
Midlife crisis worsened by World War I,feeling out of place due to his position in all that was happening and most importantly him and Cora was in a marriage of convenience there wasn't romantic love blinding them together to begin with, even though they supported each other they weren't a good match,Robert didn't appreciate Cora as much as he should have and Cora well, she is most happy with being Lady Grantham and doesn't care who she's married to which tells everything about her.
Everyone is assailing Robert’s character, and perhaps rightfully so, but I do find one moment worth mentioning. He refuses to let the maid take the fall for an act that they had an equal part in, an act that Robert initiated and potentially pressured her into. Many men of power today, morally calloused by today’s hyper-competitive, cutthroat corporate culture, would gladly let one “insignificant” secretary, clerk or cleaner take the fall in a relationship. However he acts with integrity. It would have been even more ethically impressive if Robert was forced to choose between throwing her under the bus and publicly acknowledging his mistake, and he chose the latter.
A nuanced view. Nice. Lord Grantham is human and still a pretty classy dude.
Plus, he pays for her son's education
Beautifully said!! And I just felt so much for Robert!!
He did fall for her, it was clear to me. Abd the feeling of "what could have been" in his heart, had he not married Cora, had he met jane earlier in life, you could FEEL his sense of regret and loss, the longing to be with her! It was a heartbreaking story all around for all that's involved.
And he was a true gentleman in the end.
Yes he made a mistake, but... aren't we all willing to do mistakes if our hearts truly involved??
@@bluebellcrushedvelvet Cheating on your wife is more than a "mistake".
I believe she had a crush on Robert, I mean she lost her husband and this man shows up with kindnes and treats her well. I would fall for him
Just fall for him not stealing him from her wife that was just so unnecessary
It’s a very believable story with what they’re going/gone through in their lives. No one is infallible.
And Robert is a very very handsome gorgeous man indeed!! A heart and looks in one!! I would too!
And it upsets me that he really seemed to cherish her but his loyalty prevailed.
And poor Cora.
She was kind and made him feel needed, when Cora was focusing (rightly so) on her own personal growth and worrying about Mary. It was a difficult situation for everyone and I think they all handled it reasonably well in the end.
@@bluebellcrushedvelvet So many of the aristocrats' marriages were strategically arranged for reasons of power, money, etc. I'll bet very few of them were actually faithful to their spouses.
Robert made me so angry during these episodes....
I ligit wanted to strangle him.
I feel bad for him. Throughout the whole of season 2, it eats at him that he’s not even allowed to help the war effort in a meaningful way- his title makes him too important. And he’s cut out of any business with convalescing the soldiers, ignored by his family. I’m not saying he’s right; but he feels awful, and he stops it before it goes too far.
I know. I hate him too at the end of season 2.
but I think the show did intend to make him look dislikable. It shows the hypocrisy, conservativeness, and patriarchy of the noble.
Yaa. .same here. .
He’s a caring/loving person who fell in love. It’s life I’m afraid ...
This storyline is awkward but it serves to show that Robert is drifting. He's very lost and doesn't quite knows who he is yet. That's what Jane represents at that moment.
What she *represents*? I don't like thinking of the show in that way.
Lolol when Carson heard everything. Mrs. Hughes knew what was up too. We can think we’re getting away with something, but there are people around us who know very well what we’re up to. They just keep quiet.
Think Mrs Hughes guessed when the Spanish Flu was doing the rounds, and she mentioned that a maid was down with it, and Robert said 'Which maid? Not Jane?!' Why would Jane be more important than whichever poor maid WAS ill with it?
As much as a lot of people hate Robert for this storyline, I particularly love him here. You can see his obvious human flaws in character but also how his gentle, considerate conscience working to mitigate damage.
I agree.
It was wrong to do, but we are all flawed. Robert at least treated Jane very well, and he did feel bad about what he did.
So many of these noble men slept with their help. It was good that they showed it on this show.

Same. I can’t get myself to like any character or even a person in real life once they cheat on their significant other.
This is why DA is mesmerizingly addictive. All the characters have more shades of gray in them than 50, just like any other real person in real life.
Robert, Mary, and Edith, yes. And maybe Miss O'Brien. I find the rest to be pretty two-dimensional.
What annoys me so much is how Robert got away with everything in the series. He was never really held accountable for any of his behaviour
True to life for aristocrats in those days.

@@Tessa-vz1qb nah not really. No offence to Cora but I prefer Jane ( I mean the actors)
I think that might have been part of the reason he was attracted to her. She probably reminded him of his and Cora's youth, before the stress of possibly losing the money and the house from not having a boy and the miscarriage of the boy that would have fixed the problem they were having. She probably reminded him of when he and Cora were young and happy.
I hate that he was never held accountable of what he did to Cora.
@E Indeed, however when it comes to fiction, some storylines must have a closure. And I felt like there wasn't any in this case.
I really liked Jane. She seemed like a nicer character than Edna. I felt like she TRIED to toe the line but couldn't help falling. I liked this plot line, felt bad for Cora and also for Jane. I liked Jane a lot as a character, and I always really liked this plot line. Not sure why, but I think it was because I liked Jane's character so much. The fact that he took such genuine interest in her child is what probably sealed the deal for her in many respects. That gains a lot of sympathy from someone. Because it shows how much they care.
Lefeurouge I felt the least unsympathetic towards Edna, of all characters.
@@alfchuah Same
I did, too. Robert felt out of place after the war, lost his ground, and then felt 'out' with Cora being all busy (as she later, after she got over that flu) admitted. Then there appears a warm, caring woman, with whom he simply has a 'click'- that DOES happen in life. Right when he's ready to give in to that, Bates' knock on the door makes him realize how much this will 'cost' all involved, and decides to break it off. Great storyline, extremelt well acted, and, yes, like a gentleman, he decides to help her son with his future, which, for a mom in her situation, will mean more than anything he could have given her for herself. PLUS- gawd, she is pretty.......
@@fredvankempen6238 I get that he was feeling lonely, but Cora was trying to keep the family stable. It sucks that it came at the expense of Robert, but if the roles were reversed I think Robert would have done the same for the sake of their kids. So I just can't take Robert's side on this. There is never an excuse for cheating, especially when your partner is only being inattentive for the greater good of the family.
Jane was a good character. I'm glad they both moved on in good terms. I'm also glad Robert was able to help her child. Robert is clearly flawed as all humans are, but he is overall a good guy.
Thank you. 😎📺✌✌
It must have really sucked to have to prepare and serve all of that delicious food and to never know what it tasted like.
And he was so quick to attack on Ethel
I want to like Robert, but having him cheat on his wife the same night he unintentionally causes their daughter's death is not a good look on anyone. Especially when he freaks out on Cora when he finds Bricker in her bedroom while she was telling him to leave.
This wasn't the night of Sibyl's death, and I don't think it was ever fair to blame Robert for that.
He meant lost his child for good because he upset her, not because she died. Sybil died later on.
Sybil died in season three. This is season two. Sybil had announced that she was going to Ireland and marrying Branson.
and even worse when cora starts hanging out with the painting guy in season 5 he is infuriated just by that
We all have flaws that we wish to keep hidden.
Sadly this plot line had me thinking that Robert likely had cheated on Cora previously. But uncomfy as this all was, it made for great storytelling and I especially loved the interactions with Carson and Bates.
Didn't he turn down that blonde lady throwing herself at him?
She came in the room like when Anna first met Christian. LOL! 🤣

@@bunpeishiratori5849 And also Edith with a farmer…
@@bunpeishiratori5849 Really? Everyone has a past, and it was because of this, she became who she was. Found out she really did love her husband and was willing to stand by him. At the time, she would have only been in her early 20s at the most - since we know she already had her children, and by all accounts, she was a real beauty. At the time, most marriages would have been at least partially arraigned, meaning that she would have only had "eligible" bachelor's of good social and financial standing and of the peerage to choose from. I know a lot of people don't like this story but I like it. It's Robert's own arc as he deals with feeling totally emasculated in not being able to be anything but a mascot while other men are risking their lives. It doesn't make it right but it shows that he's human and makes mistakes and it sets up other moments like finding out about Mary and Pamuk and even further down Cora and Brickar.
Exactly, he is a human being. Everybody makes mistakes and he corrected it in a gentleman and kind way towards the lady.
@@normawilliams7550 He's a great character because of how he deals with it. and it isn't like it's just "Jane is young and hot", the two of them do just sort of connect in a way both of them try to resist and if it wasn't for everything going on in his life at the time nothing would have really happened.
Correct. In addition Cora knows that Robert has a weakness to flirting, as she says after the Bricker scene, "If you never cheated during our marriage then stay here, otherwise I expect you back in my room."

I sympathized with both of them. I understand things happen during war, and he felt like Cora was ignoring him. Jane lost her husband and was grieving. Yet he had the higher hand there because she wouldn't have been in a position to tell him "no." Yes, it's clear that their attraction was mutual and would have gone all the way unless Bates had interrupted them. I liked that Jane made the choice to leave Downton on her own, realizing the position that they were both in. It wouldn't have been a happy scenario for anybody, and at least Robert still made sure that her son could go to school.
He abused his position of power and disgraced his wife.

I'm actually just here for the musical leitmotif - it's beautiful, really understated, and to my knowledge isn't used in the show again or even listed on the soundtrack. Anyone know if it's included in any compilation I'm forgetting?

Laura it’s called a dangerous path
The composer John Lunn, wrote different songs for each couple. Anna and Mr Bates got their own song. Mary and Matthew. He said, he was sad when Matthew died on the show. Matthew took some of the best music with him.
When Mary is with Henry Talbot, they have a jazzy sounding theme song.
John Lunn has released the full soundtrack for Downton, including this awesome leitmotif- also my favorite. It’s on iTunes! 💗
@@MandieTerrier I love Mary/Henry’s theme song too. That’s called Modern Love on the DA Soundtrack... I listen to it so much 🙌🏾
I really hated all these moments. Cora has a meaningful purpose a job managing and running the house. While he's useless and wants attention.
This part still broke my heart. Robert’s such a kind person. He may be intransigent but in the end he finds himself choosing what’s right… except for this. I really hated his character in this. It breaks my heart. And that time when he was mad at Cora when he found out that the Historian/Art Dealer or whatever he was had a crush on Cora. It was so unfair and gushing of hypocrisy.
But isn't that how many human beings behave? We judge ourselves by our intentions, and others by our ideals. We expect perfection and never, ever find it. We're all vulnerable and weak in a perfect storm. Robert chose the high road after all; kudos, because many wouldn't have bothered about consequences.

@@eileenmarie1652 It wasn't even called makeup then. The servants could use what they had to "make up" their faces though.

Some people just have naturally thinner eyebrows. And plucking one’s brows isn’t a new phenomenon. Brows were pencil-thin throughout the Middle Ages, the Elizabethan period, and right up until the more recent 20s and 30s, and not thicker again until the 1940s. ☺️

Those things were common in the aristocracy sphere, this show tried to reflect the true life of a noble family, so they portrayed some true lines of some marriages , but at the end of the day , love between Cora and Robert won
Most viewers can't help themselves from viewing period dramas with 21st century rose coloured glasses. Same reason people think Rose's actions in Titanic to run away with a poor man with zero plan and nothing but passion is more realistic... That way, her miscarriage was an unfortunate accident and not the result of criminal behavior. Thomas locked up Isis in a shack in the woods where all kinds of bad things could have happened to her and got away with it. This may sound unfair toward people who were punished for their behavior (Ethel comes to mind) but if Robert found out, Thomas would have been dismissed and the show would have lost one of its best characters.

For those of you who are "angry" with Robert for this story line, this happened because JF wanted to show a flawed side to this character. His "affair" was a symptom of what what happening: the war, the alienation, his home in chaos. When Robert questions was the war worth all the loss. I think it's very human. And Jane wasn't some sleazy character. She was rather wholesome. I think that's what attracted Robert. That and she's a beautiful English woman. I found this story line to be very human, and bittersweet. And in the end, Freddie was a beneficiary of it all.
I like that you mention her wholesomeness. I think that is the one saving grace from this whole situation. If she were anything like Edna, for example, it would be all the more unforgivable.
There's many ways to portray a flaw, a human side. I don't think that cheating on your wife, that is dying in your house is a human side. I can imagine the turmoil that he is going through, but holy, there are some lines you don't cross, they are not simple 'mistakes', they are not showing a human side, especialy that the only thing that stops him is thinking it is not fair to Jane. You are not thinking it is not fair to your dying wife? To your family?
Yeah, some “flaws” are not small things that make a character human. Cheating on your wife while she is sick and probably dying in the same house is not a “”flaw”” making him “human”.
Robert had plenty enough of flaws before he became a cheater TBH...
Unfortunately sometimes it just takes one mistake to ruin your whole family! People often forget that. Once betrayal is is revealed it’s very hard to put the Genie back in the bottle and regain trust!

@@hannahdyson7129 I hate Robert for cheating on Cora but Jane was fully aware of what she was doing & I do blame her.
If this tells you how memorable this story line was, I watched that entire season when it aired and I've forgotten there ever was a maid named Jane. I remember the maid who was sent away for getting pregnant and later came back as someone else's maid, I recall the kitchen assistant who went off to be the cook for Cora's brother in Daisy's place, I even remember the names of all of the footmen Downtown had over the years (and Mrs. Hughes, Anna, O'Brien, and Miss Baxter), but I do not recall there being a maid named Jane who was kissed by Robert.
So what? You have a bad memory, we got it.
Ethel and Ivy?

A dangerous path
Can anyone please tell me what Robert is eating in 1:09. Finished watching this show last year and ever since I've watched this scene this food item never left my mind
Looks like vanilla ice cream with strawberry sauce to me.
What is the name of the bloody soundtrack????
A dangerous path
Jane is gorgeous stunningly beautiful
All the angry commentators need to get a grip.
Shame Robert.
As long as you only look and not touch.... Darn Bates you have disturbed Robert getting his groove on
Did Cora know about this affair? It seems she referenced it when he was angry with her and slept in a separate room.
Which season?
Can anyone plz tell me what Robert is eating at 1:11 I've been so curious about this since the first time I saw it
Looks like Eton's Mess? Idk
came here for the comments and they did not disappoint
Its the hypocrisy for me. He was in a tizzy about Sybil being in love with Branson while cheating on Cora with a maid (she was so dull I dont even remember her name)
To be fair Robert was mad because Sybil wasn't just having an affair but was willing to uproot her current life and marry a low born man which is not what they had in mind for any of their daughters. Doing so could mean possible isolation and fracturing as a family unit as well. It turned out in favour over time, but this is the 1920's not the 2000's. People need to view period dramas for the time period they are referring to. As for Robert, it was an emotional affair built on feeling neglected by his own wife, nobility and pretty much all British and western society at the time didn't work through their issues nor address them the way couples do now. He did kiss her but he immediately regretted it and cut it off before it got any further. If anything it shows restraint and that he did in fact regret his actions and made the effort to change and re-direct his love for Cora.
" *Jane Doe* " hah
Watching these episodes of Robert straying from Cora is like listening to nails on chalkboard............ I wanted to screamed "Sthaaapppp! Cut!! re-write Robert's part!!! Cut-out Jane!!!" He's the patriarch he can't do any wrong!
What series and what episode was this?
It's during season 2...
