      That's because he was self-made and of new money (granted, there were numerous other factors about his character at play here). Such hypocrisy is pretty typical of those who consider themselves of aristocratic birth and old money. They stick their noses up at those who have made their own way, despite the fact that more often than not (as we see in this show), it is the new money that shores up and saves the old money from self-destruction.

    Matthew was the villain in this love circle, not Sir Richard Carlisle. Matthew toyed with both Lavinia and Mary feeling, making them both unhappy and uncertain. Remember: Lavinia begged Matthew to break off the engagement after she saw Matthew and Mary kissing and Matthew refused. Mary desperately wanted to be married, and because she couldn't marry the man she loved (Matthew), she settles for the man with wealth. Mr. Richard Carlisle loved Mary, and because Mary kept showing more affection towards Matthew than to him, he was made to be more angry and aggressive than he was. Just as Sarah Bunting provoked Lord Grantham to wrath, so did Mathew and Mary to Sir Richard Carlisle.

    • @inayatahmed5828
      @inayatahmed5828 5 років тому +17

      Both Matthew and Mary were extremely unfair to sir Richard and Lavinia. When they both knew they weren't over each other, they should have not gotten involved with other people. And if they made a commitment to someone else they should have stuck to it and not gone around stealing glances and kisses when no one was looking. They behaved very disgustingly.

    • @jehannethompson1432
      @jehannethompson1432 4 роки тому +3

      Seriously. It was fair, Matthew did love Lavinia and I wouldn’t say Mary loved Richard but Matthew and Mary belonged with each other even tho it ended so tragically. So to me it was fair and all this was to show that they still had feelings for each other. Richard was controlling and manipulative and in a way rude. So I don’t blame Mary. Lavinia was overall a good girl and Mary treated her like a friend so it’s not like Mary treated her like garbage

    • @jehannethompson1432
      @jehannethompson1432 4 роки тому +1

      Inayat Ahmed they never got married in the first part bc of the uncertainty of the gender of Lady Granthams baby and Pamuk. so therefore it’s not a sin to move on and to love other people

    • @ellie2041
      @ellie2041 2 роки тому +1

      I agree they were unfair to Lavinia and Mathew should have been honest with her about still loving Mary. I also agree that Mary's obvious affection for Mathew probably was irritating to Richard and her being wishy washy wasn't right. HOWEVER, that does not excuse or justify Richard's pushy and manipulative tactics to shove Mary into Marriage. If he truly loved her he wouldn't have tried to repeatedly blackmail her and hold his "favor" to her over her head!

    If and I do mean If Lady Mary had married Sir Richard she would have been a Socialite Trophy wife. An arrangement similar to that of her Aunt, Lady Rosemound. She married Marmaduke for his wealth and he married her for her social power. In all fairness I can't blame Sir Richard for his disdain of the relationship between Mary and Matthew. All he wanted to do is make a Powerful and Happy couple. He truly fell in love with Lady Mary's cold, cheek, and aloof personality. He saw her as strong, determined, brave, bold and loving.

I do believe Lady Mary would have lived a life of Wealth, Power and Privilege. Her parents fell in Love with each other. Tis would Not have been the same for Lady Mary and Sir Richard.

As for him loving her, he actually would have loved her and fallen even more deeply, if given a chance. And his love for Mary would have made him WANT to change. He would have mellowed, he would have softened, and he would have cherished her. But she was witchy and rude. I couldn't stand the way she treated him.

      Melissa Forkner Lesher : I question the sincerity of his “love.” I have loved people who were unwilling or unable to return my feelings. I was hurt and disappointed, of course, but... I still love them and I genuinely wish them happiness and prosperity. Genuine love is simply incapable of selfishness.
      I have also been in a relationship where the love was very uneven (though I didn’t realize it). I genuinely loved and appreciated the man, but there were multiple incompatibilities that kept me from really bonding with him in a deep, passionate way. He felt my lack of involvement and was very hurt and angry. Meanwhile I was confused by his anger/hurt because I really was giving him the best I could.
