**Help me pay for College** Hello there! I am currently fundraising for my education and wanted to shout that out in the comments of my videos! If you go a little further back on my channel (Where in the World is Kate Middleton video), I discuss it more, but basically: I'm working towards $35,000 to fund my tuition and fees (that doesn't include housing ) and will be giving updates on what progress l've made toward securing scholarships, grants, and donations on the community tab on my channel. If you're interested in following along with my journey or just want to know if l've made my goal, you can check over there. Below are the links to different platforms where you can make a contribution. But I also have a patreon (Linked in the description) and UA-cam membership which both go a long way in supporting me as l create videos and go to school. 💸Venmo: @neida-mbuia 💸Cash App: $neidajoao 💸Paypal: @neidajoao If you have nothing to contribute that's okay (I feel you completely)! A like, comment or subscription are all free and helpful. Thank you to anyone who's subscribed to my channel and is willing to help; I cannot express the love I have for you in words
Everyone who’s saying “she’s basically an adult” or debating the age of consent laws is telling on themselves. It’s so insane to me because at age 24 I had an 18 coworker who asked me out and I just had to let him down gently because no way. He was WAY too young for me legal adult or not. Anyone younger than my younger sister is a big no no for me. The developmental gap is HUGE
@@Kalitayy I don’t necessarily agree, only because the developmental gap as you get older becomes less and less of a problem. A 50 and 40yo have WAY more in common than a 20 and 30 yo for example. They’re more likely at similar stages in their careers, family development, life goals, etc. I even think 2-3 years can be TOO much of a gap when you’re younger. As a 15 yo you shouldn’t be messing around with an 12yo. Even my sister and I who aren’t only 2.5 years apart have completely different worldviews, priorities and schedules. I just wouldn’t be compatible with someone her age, where I am now at my age.
That part. Beyond laws, beyond power dynamics, there is a huge developmental gap. I've tried to put myself in his headspace (and of those defending it) to try and understand it, but I just cannot. Maybe it's because I'm a woman, idk? Similarly to you, when I was 22, a 19 y/o girl was flirting with me, and I had to gently turn her down. Even if it's legal and "just" 3 years, at that stage the mental difference is huge. Any potential attraction disappeared as soon as I asked her age. I remember what I was like at 19, even though I was more mature than most of my peers, I was still way less mature than I though I was, especially when it comes to romance and that stuff. Plus, the difference in lifestyle and experience. At that point I'd been living on my own for 3 years, had worked, was studying, had lived abroad. While she was still in high school. Her parents were probably buying her groceries and doing her laundry - which is fine and expected at that age. Our lifestyles and maturity was vastly different. There's just no way. I usually don't like making blanket statements, but in this case: those that try to excuse this behaviour are exploitative creeps.
@@ElJebetequa Exactly! Like I can’t even imagine wanting to mess around with a 17 yo, it makes me sick. It’s one thing to not know (although I believe a 17 would look obviously young and Tana certainly did) but once you’re told and you still do it???? Absolutely disgusting. As the older person you have a responsibility to set appropriate boundaries, and ESPECIALLY if it’s oh idk a CRIMEEEE
Thank goodness this comment section hasn't devolved into victim shaming and r-pe apologetics. I don't care what the survivor of abuse has done in the past, harm is harm. I am anti-harm. Period.
It doesn't even make sense because if Cody was willing to do this to one woman, he'd do it again and again. It's not just about Tana, or "punishing" Cody, it's about ensuring other victims don't occur and setting the stage for more confessions regarding SA.
This isn't cancel culture, but holding a frat boy accountable for his actions. This is repeated behavior, reddit is on him. As a former fan of his, I kinda saw this coming from a mile away.
Nuance seems lost these days, you’re absolutely right. 17 is a child I don’t care. I’ve raised 4 children to adulthood, 17 is definitely a child. I have much hope for the future with people like you coming up. ❤
People say it’s “cancel culture”, when really it’s just being held accountable. No one ever got cancelled without doing anything terribly and irredeemably wrong in the first place.
@@Kalitayy Well I wouldn’t go that far. People are canceled all the time for things that they either didn’t do or for things some people simply disagree with but isn’t illegal or necessarily wrong. Cody isn’t one of those cases fs, but it’s actually really common
@@ek5268 Isn’t cancelling when someone loses their career? Johnny Depp has made movies since the defamation trial, he has a contract with Dior and he was at Cannes 2 months ago. James Gunn still works for Warner bros and is the executive producer for all DCU projects, and is personally directing the new Superman movie. Brendan Fraser won an Oscar last year. If you’re referencing how he was blacklisted from Hollywood after his accusations towards Philip Berk, cancel culture generally refers to public backlash against an individual and they lose opportunities due to pressure from social media, making it a culture that a large amount of people participate in. Blacklisting happens within the industry itself, and it’s existed for as long as Hollywood has, long before social media. They didn’t blacklist him because everyday people were against him. I’m not really sure what you’re referring to when you say that Courtney Love was cancelled. Is it the conspiracy that she killed Kurt Cobain or the controversial stuff that she’s said recently? She’s released 2 albums since Cobain’s death, one only 4 years later, so she didn’t lose the opportunity to release albums because of the conspiracies. She hasn’t released anything since her recent controversial actions like suing Olivia Rodrigo, but that was only 3 years ago and she’s already waited more than 3 years between albums/singles before then. Lindsay Ellis has published two books since her controversy, she recently returned to UA-cam and got a ton of views and support. The only one I can really understand is Janet Jackson, the 2004 incident was ridiculous, and it did significantly affect her career. But this is where I get confused about cancel culture, because Janet Jackson’s case was blatant misogyny, and it happened before Facebook launched. If thats cancel culture then I guess it’s always existed. But it seems to be connected to preexisting prejudice and discrimination, just happening on a large scale. But I don’t really see any examples of people being canceled for simply having opinions that aren’t popular but also aren’t bigoted. If cancel culture is a term for prejudice against marginalized groups on a large scale then I accept that it happens, but if the definition includes people being cancelled for having non bigoted opinions like you said in your comment I don’t really see any examples of that happening in the real world.
@@ek5268 Isn’t cancel culture when someone loses their career due to public backlash? Fraser was blacklisted from Hollywood because of his accusations against Philip Berk, and it was unfair, but the general public had nothing to do with it. I disagree that Depp didn’t do anything wrong and that conflict was way more serious than people disagreeing with his opinions. What I don’t understand about cancel culture is why it’s considered unfair in the case of people having controversial opinions like Gunn, Ellis, and Love. None of them lost their careers. But if they did it’s within the public’s right to disagree with them, and within a company’s right to disassociate with them. If a celebrity says something that makes me want to stop supporting them, it doesn't have to be illegal, who’s to say it's unfair just because it isn't offensive to them personally? And when a company sees that a celebrity is hurting its reputation it's not unfair of them to cut ties. I see Janet’s situation as different because the wardrobe malfunction objectively wasn’t her fault, she took the blame for Timberlake’s actions. It’s objectively unfair, and a case of blatant misogyny and racism, which has always existed. So if that’s canceling then I agree and it has happened to other people. But I don’t think that having an opinion that people disagree with and getting backlash for it is unfair.
While I understand and agree with your “you’re not a bad person if you watch this person”, I think the point is more (at least for me) to teach the newer generation that they need to be better citizens, better people because these things WILL come out & as a whole, society WILL turn on you. It’s imperative to blast these ppl and press them, starve their platforms & show them THIS IS NOT OK. For our sons & daughters that aren’t yet societal members (babies). Pressing Cody to respond also shows young men & women who HAVE done unsavory things (maybe unknowingly) that some sort of accountability NEEDS to be taking in order for some sort of growth to be had. We do have a hand in shaping the next generation on what’s acceptable as a human citizen & what’s not.
Love the comparison of Tana and drew Barrymore. Actually really accurate when you think of how young drew was and getting into clubs with adults. I would be scared to think of all the carp that would be on the internet about me if I became internet famous and had all that money and no rules because she didn’t have parents to watch after her.
I’m SO glad you mentioned Promising Young Woman, bc when I watched D’Angelo’s video, that movie came up in my mind.. literally Tana is Nina, Cody is Alex Monroe 😭 he’s even a frat boy like Alex
I am 26 and can’t imagine myself getting involved with someone my little brother’s age (21) or younger. 25 and 17 is INSANE. And WOMEN are defending him??? We are in hell.
That’s a really interesting point about neoliberalism capitalism being intertwined with how cancel culture works today! I feel like a lot of people have pointed out how cancel culture does or doesn’t work, and how it can be hypocritical but your explanation added a lot of needed depth to those statements.
i've heard of cody and tana over the years but i was never too interested in any of them, so i don't have any conflicting feelings about the situation, i just hope he didn't do anything like this to more people. my main takeaway from your video tho was that boycotting a single person or not has no relation to your morals. it's been something i've been thinking about a lot lately, and fnding out about this aspect of it too was very eye opening. i kinda hate that i'll never truly know peace in my head but. the more day pass the more i find out that that's kind of. just life in general lol
I disagree about D'Angelo telling Cody to address the situation. He needs to tell his fans to stop victim blaming and believe victims. They will be ride or die for him no matter what, if he tells them to stop blaming the victim then maybe it will make a difference the world at leastb
I really appreciated your perspective bc ive been thinking about something similar with whether or not cody making some sort of response would do any good to anyone? If he responds and his fanbase just comments, "He acknowledged what he did wrong and apologized. Forgiven." Then what does this show to other victims or survivors of S A who experienced something similar? I hope people keep talking about it and breaking down this situation bc it is uncomfortable, and people have to live through this shit all the time, so yeah we should talk about it. I watched Cody ko for a long time and only stopped like a couple months ago for no particular reason other than i just stopped, but you got it exactly right when you said that we (as consumers, as the audience) dont want to accept that we watched and supported a person who didnt just do a bad thing but is a bad person. I felt this exact thing, but i need to learn to sit in the uncomfortable feelings bc they're there for a reason
Survivors? Get real lady statutory isn’t traumatic comparing that to actual rape is like comparing adhd and Down syndrome your ignoring the obvious implications
I've seen alot of people saying he should at least tell his fans to stop harassing tana and accusing her of lying. Which is the least he can do for victims.
@@smokindailyy4917 " why are you complaining about cancer, at least you are alive, there are millions of dead humans". Sounds really silly right? Thats what you just did. And Tana even said she has been through worse things. Trauma is not a competition, we can have empathy and understanding for all sorts of trauma. Youre weird for feeling you can only have enough trauma for " the real trauma" and you being the arbitor. You are probably not a professional, so who are you to even believe you can judge the severity of trauma? Weird attitude
@@smokindailyy4917 Things that might not be traumatic in the moment might be traumatic in the future. Also, both of those neurodivergent disorders are/can be debilitating to a persons everyday life, they just affect it in different ways. Stop comparing apples to oranges
i am in my twenties now, but was on stan twitter in high school. cody was among the celebrities/fandoms i tweeted most often about. I think part of me was very naive and wanted to believe in the “wife guy/feminist” archetype he was pushing at the time. interestingly, there was a niche subset of cody’s fandom made up of lesbians/queer femmes (like myself). ultimately, my support of him was more reflective of the community of people i was able to interact with online because of him. it’s strange now to associate Cody, a straight man who turned out to be a bad person, with my teenage coming out. especially since (at the time) i was the age he felt ok pursuing as an adult man.
we could talk about restorative justice with cody if he knew what he did was wrong, if he acknowledged what he did was wrong, and if he put in effort to right that wrong on the victim's terms. he may or may not know it was wrong, but he hasn't acknowledged it or done anything to put it right, so "restorative justice" is completely irrelevant here. i do think cody saying something is important--specifically, he needs to say that people should not be harassing or victim blaming tana. i don't think d'angelo was saying that cody should say something so that cody can be redeemed. my understanding of d'angelo's point was that he should say something because he is the only person who can tell his fans to cut their misogynistic bullshit, and the longer he's silent the more emboldened they are in their harassment and victim-blaming. if he tells his fans to leave tana alone, that will do a lot, even if it wont solve things (or earn him absolution).
just got back from a trip and cant think of anything to add to the conversation cause im tired lol and just commenting for the algorithm. but you've definitely given me a new perspective and more to think about. love ur vids
when i think of cancelled people and withdrawing my attention and stuff, it's more like - "i don't want to give my money to someone because in this capitalistic hellscape, money = reward". i don't want to contribute to someone who has behaved reprehensibly ygm
I love your discussion of Neo liberalism and cancel culture like it’s such an interesting way of looking at it and just how DEEPLY capitalism has embedded itself into our larger culture (at least in the western world for sure)
You were able to articulate so well what i've been trying to say to my husband about this whole situation. I loved your points about Neoliberalism and I learned a lot. I also love the fact that you brought up Broski. Reading the "if this is proven to be true" was insane and it definitely speaks to her character. She is so much more intelligent than to suggest that something like this could be proven. It's a side nod to Cody saying "hey, I want to hear your side and we might be cool." BUT HIS LACK OF RESPONSE TO THE SITUATION AND CARRYING ON HIS DJ FRAT BOY LIFE IS A RESPONSE. Wonderful video and and take on this situation!! 💖
Cody Ko is a person and a brand. His success on this platform has contributed to him creating multiple companies, corporations and brands. Based your definition of neoliberalism, by supporting him, people would be supporting his companies/corporations. I get what you are saying but I disagreed with that part of your video.
The commentary about restorative justice and humanizing individuals was a key and uniformly-applied point she made, however as with anything nuance is of the essence. To an extent, the fd up society we lived in has allowed people to “commodify” themselves as a brand, and when they commit and show the continued capacity to commit harm (esp when punching down) I think we definitely have the right as consumers to put our foot down. I do think her point was more about the logic of how people do not authentically stop engaging with art based on principle, but rather as an easy form of accruing self-affirmation points. If I stop watching X, I have become Virtuous just by the act of doing so. Conversely, I could not become V if I didn’t stop watching X. To inherently tie your value system and appraisal of your morality to that (and just that) then call it a day is a cop out, and due to the nature of overconsumption in a capitalist space, it’s unfortunately a common perspective.
@@meemzing yeah I definitely agreed with her point about how we shouldn’t tie our morals and values on whether an influencer/celebrity is a good or bad person. That’s an odd thing to do and it’s a symptom of Western societies where people get their sense of self from consuming media from public figures, social media etc. And I agree with you too! I just think her saying explicitly that choosing to not support someone who did something bad doesn’t do anything because they are not a corporation, is a flawed argument. I feel like that’s a valid argument but I don’t agree with it. To be as big as Cody Ko, you basically become the face of your corporation/company. When you are that big, you are basically a corporate entity. He literally is able to sign people onto his podcast network and has people who work for him. He is able to churn out 3-4 long form videos and a podcast every week because he has a team of people behind him who he pays. A singular youtube video can take hours to film and edit but he is making 3-4 so he definitely has a team of editors/producers. He was also labelled “brand safe” and “youtube’s golden boy” because he is a brand/company. Same way “Beyoncé” is a person/brand/corporate entity with a robust team behind her. So framing her argument in that way, as in her saying that choosing not to support Cody Ko won’t change anything as much as it would when we stop supporting corporate institutions, that argument is flawed in my opinion when you consider that he is a corporation as well. My issue with that argument is that it makes it seem like it’s okay to just keep supporting people who have done bad things and give them a pass because they are just a person. I am sure Cody Ko has stans who will support him till the end. But also, it sets a dangerous precedent to frame something in that way because people will use that to excuse bad behavior. Cancel culture is not real or effective. It never solves anything but instead allows people to feel like they are morally superior. At the same time, people think calling someone out for their bad behavior is “cancel culture.” Society can’t function effectively if we don’t call out bad behavior from others. Even if these people continue having a platform, calling them out for bad behavior helps other people learn that said behavior is unacceptable and what the consequences are so that it is not perpetuated again and again creating more harm for the most vulnerable people in society. While I agree with most of what she said, I took issue with that point for the reasons listed above.
I’m only 22 and thinking about dating or sleeping with an 18 year old makes ME feel weird. I don’t feel like I’m finished growing as an adult or that I won’t continue to grow and mature, but I definitely feel like I’m in a different part of life compared to someone who’s just finished highschool
I'm 20 and I look at my friends who are 17 and they seem so young. People always underestimate how much change happens mentally, physically and emotionally from ages 10 to 25, and it always ends up hurting /kids/. Tana was a child growing up on the public eye, and from what little I have heard, it seems to me like she's been through a lot of shit. Cody Ko took advantage of her. Period.
I'm 24, and I consider everyone 22-20 as a kid, 19-15 as a child, and anything under 15 as a baby. I wouldn't ever date anyone who's even a year younger than me, not just because I prefer older partners, but because it's kinda icky to me and 23 and 24 are so different when it comes to life experience.
Awesome sociopolitical commentary. I would slightly disagree with one aspect, what Ned did is technically criminal to a degree as well; he completely violated the bounds between employer and employee. Regardless of his employee consenting to the act itself or not, this alone is a major breach of a fair and safe work place. It’s a ghastly way to take advantage of a power dynamic. Love the cogency of the method of reasoning you used throughout, thank you for opening up such crucial conversations in this space!
i did not know i could find a real human being on youtube. my feed on this app in particular is woefully indoctrinated by all the harmful systems you touched on, and more. thank you for helping me feel less dissonant while on this website
Idk, the statute of limitations has passed, I believe. Edit: plus, the only one who could sue is Tana, and she has no plans to do so. So unless there's other, more recent stuff, under the rug, that's not a valid excuse.
I think if you know the creator/entertainer isn’t shit. And you defend or keep on supporting them. It does say something about you. At the very least, what lines your willing to ignore, etc. But ppl personalize these ppl so much. People don’t want to do the introspection on what their relationships to these people are. What it means when they do some crappy or vile thing. I do hate the perfmative act of parading yourself as a good person by “canceling” or dragging someone online. In the cody ko situation, I have no dog in this fight, never been a fan. But I think at the very least his fans need to take him off his pedastol. And ppl should make it a point to always keep the tana story alive. He doesn’t deserve “the good guy” image that’s for sure.
Correct. I think it does say something (as opaque as it may be) about you, however she’s right that your consumption does not necessarily DEFINE you as a whole. We can take the same logic with your profession - what you do is a part of you and could speak to some aspects about you, however it isn’t “you” and all you are. It’s a fairly solid line of logic, however on a purely social level (ie, my own personal interactions and what I entertain) I need to agree with you 100% - a person’s actions, stances, or lack thereof will immediately affect my perception of them, and therefore how I deal with them.
unfortunately my edible is peaking right as I remembered I need to comment for the algorithm so now I can’t think of much to say except here’s a comment for the algorithm. edit: I really enjoyed the video and some of the new perspectives you’ve offered for me wrt cancel culture, an often tired conversation. always happy to see another black creator in these yt (pun intended) streets!! much love 💛💛
I love this and I kinda naturally do this but you presenting it in this way is helping my brain 🧠 chill from the "I'm suppose to feel" thoughts. Example: I grew up LOVING Michael Jackson music and videos. Back when VH1 and MTV actually had music as content. Well 3 yrs ago my son who was 7 at the time found some Michael Jackson music while he was on UA-cam. He told me all about this song he liked and it was MJ. I was like yay bud he's a musical legend and I showed him moon walking, thriller, and a bunch more music and videos. A part of me was so happy watching him live what I lived discovery and enjoying this music. But then a part of my brain was like ummmmm "am I allowed to let him like this?". Over all I decided it's his art that I love and my kid is enjoying. It's not like I'm sending my kid to Never never land and not letting my son enjoy it just didn't make sense. Plus I agree I'm SO SICK of rich corporations brainwash everyone into pure money making "morals" as our country counties to lose more and more humanity by the minute. Ahhhhhh no one can just think for themselves and "make it make sense" anymore. People would rather let another human they disagree with die and claim they were right than to remember that's another human (just like you) with a family and a purpose. I feel like No one that can actual do anything cares about the long term outcome and how we are completely sabotaging ourselves for nothing more than to have more than they will ever need or be able to use in 10 lifetimes. Wow okay didn't mean to go off on a tangent. Great video !!!
Neida, you have helped me understand a lot about the human collective and standing up for what's right to stop someone's suffering, not about this cody situation particularly but about Taehyung or V from BTS. he posted some mcdonalds fries on his ig and discourses started about cancelling him, BTS and the company for them not caring about their fans while advocating for human rights in the past. I stand with him taking accountability for supporting such hideous brand (which he doesnt care) but now I can see that won't change things. I, in one hand, wont support the brand, but if his fans want to is up to them. it sucks really, I see them for how the members of the band really are, instead of idealising them any longer . But me cancelling them and stop enjoying their music sadly won't end a genoc1de over palestine, sudan and congo. All I can do is up to me, and maybe stop investing so much into stuff that won't align with my morals. I'm just not angry anymore, only disappointed yet life goes on I guess...
I followed Cody for years, being fully unaware of all the things in Deangelo’s video was a giant bummer to learn because I was SA’d by 22 year old when I was 16. For me I liked his content because I follow a lot of politics and other stuff that’s happening in the world, being a trans femme I like to be informed, but with that comes a lot of distress. Mostly because of the state of the world. So I consciously seek out normie content so that I won’t just doom scroll and try to get a laugh in here and there. Cody’s content was that space for me for a while. I have not shamed myself for laughing or liking it after finding out who he actually is. But still now I felt like I needed to completely distance myself from his content as being an artist myself I have a very hard time separating art from the artist. I don’t think he will ever be funny to me again.
Thank you for this thoughtful and vulnerable response. I completely agree with the need to sometimes just watch "normie" content to help get through the days in this h*llsc*pe 😣 I hope you can find someone else to fill that space for yourself very soon 🙏🏽
I laughed out loud when you said at 24 he already is who he's going to be. I was a completely different person at 30 than I was at 24. As were most of my friends. He was a full grown ass man who responsible for his actions, sure. And there are a lot of signs he hasn't grown much. But even if he hasn't grown a lot I would guess he's still very different than who he was at 24
I don’t care about my being a bad person for enjoying someone’s art if they are immoral. I care about financially supporting them by giving them my time. I don’t want to add to the success that person achieves. At the very least, for someone that is a predator, my support is giving them money they could use to continue to prey upon others. It’s like with recycling. Sure, my recycling doesn’t make a dent in the impact of massive corporations but it’s important to me that I don’t add to the problem.
ive loved cody Ko with Noel for YEARSSS, but Noel was 100% the bigger appeal to me, and I even enjoyed Kelsey more than Cody, not trying to dog on him for that but its just the truth, everyone else around him is funnier 🤷♀️ I haven’t been into their content in a few years now but I do remember being a teenager and watching him collab with Tana and also watching Tana videos around that time too! Wow, what a flash from past. Thats so weird that he did that but i’m not surprised? Maybe that speaks for all white men, or maybe that speaks for the frat boys, or maybe just influential people in general but im just not surprised
also is the sense of associating with rapist, my ex of 4 years was complacent in his best friend of years SA me in my sleep and I never ever looked at him the same way. I told him multiple times how I was very uncomfortable around this person and he not only decided to secretly stay friendly with him while we were dating, but then started hanging out regularly with him after we broke up, because he didn’t need to keep it a secret anymore! I hate to generalize, but men typically will side with their friends more than they would ever even consider siding with the victim, especially when the victim is a woman
I remember hearing about this a few years back maybe, I never liked or watched Cody co, I was baffled that no one was talking about it. I’ll be honest, thought his content was just a worse version of any other commentary guy. I thought, what’s the difference, between an unlikable Cody co and an unlikable tana. What makes them believe Cody, who never refuted and actually had terrible people around him consistently, and tana, who spoke so openly and clearly of her experience. I think it’s kinda cruel that the conversation never changed, just more people knew.
I just wonder how many of his female supporters are young girls as well. We all thought we knew everything and were mature at that age. Makes me feel sad.
Wow, the ONLY person with a nuanced and logical take to this situation, and really every cancel culture situation - thank FUCKING god. Everyone just wants an apology, they love the entertainment and can't get enough of the UA-camr apology videos. Just watch the videos or don't, what does getting him to address it do for you???? What consequence do we want for him? What is the goal here??? Talking about this shit makes no sense in general lmao
That she’s created an open space for in-depth conversation (including the capacity to agree and disagree based on ideas as opposed to purely engaging through ad hominems) is so crucial in our current social landscape.
I agree that forcing someone to say something won't change a lot, but wouldn't supporting someone economically make you accomplice of them using your money to hurt others or abusing its power? Its not about a personal moral stand but about how your money assigns power to others? (I know, also a capitalistic view but we live under one so its realistic)
I think people (D'Angelo especially) originally wanted him to say something not so that it absolved them from guilt when watching his videos or supporting him but so that he could call his dogs off tana. People who follow him were and are still trashing her name and calling her a liar and him at least telling these people that he doesn't want them to do that would have helped reduce that hate she got. What it would do now that his entire subreddit has turned against him I'm not sure. There are clearly still people who aren't aware of the situation (see his dj set) that could be made aware but I don't see transparency being a goal of Cody's if he's waited this long already.
Also this was a really good succinct video about all of the problems surrounding this issue and I really appreciate your perspective on it! Subscribed :)
I actually hadn’t thought of that aspect of it! You’re right, I think Cody saying something would go miles for his fans realizing that Tana’s not the villain here. While it might not stop the hate (bc haters gonna hate) but I think it would still help. Thank you for your comments btw!!
"he has the face of someone who would..." unless you're taking a comedic angle, you can't justify remarks like this just because you're comfortably on the right side of this controversy. recognize the irony that the completion of that sentence refers to his using racial slurs, and do better going forward. that said, it's incredibly valuable to have discussions surrounding the merits of cancel culture, so thanks for bothering to challenge the concept in the first place.
I don't think anything he could say would really be genuine at this point. But the fact that there is no legal case makes it seem crueler to just let Tana get this hate while she is trying to process an experience of hers.
I don’t even feel that I would be a bad person if I kept watching him but I don’t feel right watching him anymore. Like I don’t want to watch his videos anymore bc I’m turned off to him so it’s not like a struggle not to watch them. If he gets back into good graces I won’t be able to see him the same way again either, you’re right that it’s so odd that we just take a statement as good enough. Like we know what he did at this point, we know he’s not a good person. You can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube but I guess some people disagree
It’s a tiny note, but Ned fulmer didn’t just cheat on his wife, he did so with an employee of the company he owned. Which is incredibly inappropriate and immoral. His affair partner got WAY more heat for cheating on her fiancée than Fulmer did as well. Which I think that speaks even further to your point that people were willing to further minimize what he did because they liked him. I know it was a side point to your over all argument, but it really does further illustrate the phenomenon of what you were saying

Dropping someone you used to love is possible. It takes time, but it's possible. I used to love crystal castles until Alice came out with her statement. No art is good enough when it comes from pain from victims. We're lucky WE didn't have to go through what they did. But that's THEIR reality. Y'all need to stop justifying going back to these pos.
I thought his That's Cringe videos and music were funny but after seeing what he and Noel said during the Depp v Heard trial I was turned off and this has made me a lifelong hater
It is paramount to separate the art from the artist. Jeffree Star is the scum of this earth, a demon, but I LOVE his music and his aesthetic; it was queer, it was flamboyant, and it was liberating for me. Finally, I wasn't alone.
How do you go about separating art from the artist? I ask because my understanding of truly creative art is that it is a response to all the inputs that an artist has received. That's why they cite their influences, the art/experiences that has made them the artist they are. I think art can be reaffirming of identities and beliefs whilst recognizing that the artist has had experiences or made choices that differ from those of the consumer. Maybe the art represents where the consumer and the artist's identities converge.

2-3 years should be the max age gap on any relationship, no matter how old they are
@@Kalitayy I don’t necessarily agree, only because the developmental gap as you get older becomes less and less of a problem.
Yeah they’re literally saying they’d be fine with it being an 11yo, as long as he did it in nigeria
@@ek5268 like who?
@@rubyymoonn Johnny Depp

Really enjoyed this take thanks for sharing

I disagree about D'Angelo telling Cody to address the situation. He needs to tell his fans to stop victim blaming and believe victims. They will be ride or die for him no matter what, if he tells them to stop blaming the victim then maybe it will make a difference the world at leastb
I really appreciated your perspective bc ive been thinking about something similar with whether or not cody making some sort of response would do any good to anyone? If he responds and his fanbase just comments, "He acknowledged what he did wrong and apologized. Forgiven." Then what does this show to other victims or survivors of S A who experienced something similar? I hope people keep talking about it and breaking down this situation bc it is uncomfortable, and people have to live through this shit all the time, so yeah we should talk about it.

i am in my twenties now, but was on stan twitter in high school. cody was among the celebrities/fandoms i tweeted most often about.

Wise words. Could you speak on Neil Gaiman?

Maybe that speaks for all white men, or maybe that speaks for the frat boys, or maybe just influential people in general but im just not surprised
i want to clarify i said thats so weird what he did, but what i meant to say that is so GROSS and WRONG. Thank you ~~~
also is the sense of associating with rapist, my ex of 4 years was complacent in his best friend of years SA me in my sleep and I never ever looked at him the same way.
Don't agree with you on everything. Popularity absolutely matters and can lead to corporate success and propaganda.
"he has the face of someone who would..."
unless you're taking a comedic angle, you can't justify remarks like this just because you're comfortably on the right side of this controversy. recognize the irony that the completion of that sentence refers to his using racial slurs, and do better going forward.
that said, it's incredibly valuable to have discussions surrounding the merits of cancel culture, so thanks for bothering to challenge the concept in the first place.
I'm currently 25, and regularly interact with a 17 year old family friend. I love the kid, but he makes me want to rip my hair out. he is also undeniably a kid, no matter how much of a grown up he tries to sell himself as lmao
And then years down the line you find out the terrible person plagiarized an actual artist cause that’s what happens when ppl don’t have morals (not targeting JS in particular but wouldn’t be surprised lol)
Cody’s art cannot be seperated at all. Especially on the YT platform.
@@edgytypebeat781 Exactly. I also kinda look at the other things while not condoning what that person did. I hate Chris Brown, but can look at the music video for "Wall To Wall" and acknowledge that people who aren't abusive made the sets, went with the theme, and it has a good sound.
But people are supportive of awful people.
You made the racially ambiguous comment and it's giving drake i to clocked that years ago and sniffed out both their shit during their rise in the past couple of years.
Ngl u spent 40 minutes non stop talking while saying nothing at all
That you lack the capacity to comprehend and engage with the points she makes does not render them null. Honestly you sound like a teenager/preteen lol
@@meemzing no im saying she keeps saying words but forming no real solid sentences, like shes saying the same thing over and over again while she goes on unrelated rants about other topics
@@jonasfrank9150 you’re talking about the flow / presentation of the information, in which case yes it could be cleaner. Sometimes ideas like this form through stream of consciousness and need some organization before they’re conveyed so the ideas link tightly together.
Omg wait, this is kinda my brand 🤭
I never understood that people i don't know "celebrities" I guess i don't know them. I don't care if they've done something i like. Like Stanley Kubrick great director horrifying person. I still love the shinning but feel so bad for Shelly Duval cause of how she was treated
