While I'm finishing up my review of ACOSF (which should be coming to your eyeballs this weekend!), I had some thoughts about the drama on the set of It Ends With Us. What's the tea between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively? Why is everyone suddenly turning on Blake and Ryan Reynolds? Is this drama even real?
🗨️What did you think of the "drama" surrounding the film?

So- I graduated 2020- I only watched Gilmore girls for the first time last year and when my friend was shitting on Rory for dropping out of Yale etc I defended her. I had a dream of being an animator and it’s all kind of fallen apart. Watching Rory struggle and go through that rejection really helped even after a few years had gone by. I had a teacher like Mitchum. Told me I didn’t have it. And I went back to my dorm and cried. Then I dusted myself off, and got back to work. Still in a similar position to Rory in AYITL but trying. Anyway- what I wanted to say is thank you for a refreshing POV on her character.

It kills me to listen to what they did to Tamlin's character. Like she legit made him the bad guy just 'because'. But what really kills me is they destruction of Lucian and Tamlin's relationship. In the first book they hinted how deep their friendship is and she just ripped it apart. It makes me a little angry to listen to it lol so glad I didn't read it. I had to stop pretty much half way through the second book.

It’s so funny how she just randomly decided she has no hobbies or interests, she can’t make any friends that aren’t her boyfriend or her boyfriends friends, and instead of picking up a hobby or something she decides the only thing she wants to do all day is war monger and basically be a mercenary/politican/fema disaster relief worker like????? it’s so random and makes zero sense

Honestly, I think the only reason I managed to read past acotar was beacuse i was promised it gets better. Also the ending manged to peak my intrest somewhat. Had I read this independently? Without a couple trusted people telling me it gets better? I think I would have stopped reading sooner.

Lucian was the only redeeming character in the series. I did like Tamlin in the first book and I was so upset what they did with them both. Especially Lucian.

Having read this trilogy, THANK YOU for pointing out all of the problems I had with this series! I was practically pointing at my screen at certain parts going, "Finally, someone who gets it!" From the aggressive heteronormativity to the weird racial implications to all the problems with Rhys, on top of just not liking the story for the most part, listening to your reviews touch on these things felt so validating!

The turn on Rory from the internet has always confused me for exactly what you said, what’s wrong with women’s wrongs. But you had plenty more defense material like the daddy and class issues; great points all around.

"Wuthering Heights is not a morality play" is one of the truest statements you could say when talking about this book. One of the most fascinating aspects to me is that you can't really tell who Emily Brontë sides with: every character is both victim and aggressor, the main character is the villain, and our main narrator is also a very flawed individual (although I'd say Nelly is one of the most normal there). WH isn't interested in telling who's right and who's wrong. To me, it's more a story about two different natures, the calm and the storm, and how they fascinate but at the same time can't comprehend each other, and how they both can be selfish in very different ways. Edit: forgot to say that, despite this, the book and the characters talks a lot about morality. It's such an interesting contrast.

YES, I had the same feeling about her since middle school too, even since her Wizard days something seemed off. She always said Alex is a character that’s not like her but kinda? I truly think she’s more like most of the characters she plays than she wants us to believe. I never liked Alex as a character, yes Alex Russo is funny but very disrespectful and tries too hard to be edgy for my personal liking…

I can understand liking a book because it's easy to read and has simple worldbuilding. This book is the kind of book that I can see getting people's toes dipped into fantasy. However, I cannot for the life of me understand how literal adults who've already read Twilight and Divergent and Red Queen thought this book had good mysteries that kept them on their toes. I also think the whole Hunger Games vibes of the MC being in constant danger played a big part in people liking this, but in this book, the author shoves that aspect into a story just to add tension and it doesn't even fit. It's not in any way relevant to the plot nor does it make sense world-wise, it's stakes for stakes sake. What's worse, half the time Violet isn't even that bothered and forgets that her fellow students are trying to kill her until they're making an active attempt to do so. I'm furious at the fact that this book is so popular when there are so many ones out there that are simple and easy to read and still sooooo much better than Fourth Wing, and also actually have marginalized representation that's done well and not another strong cishet white female character or an ethnically ambiguous love interest who is described to look like a balenciaga model white guy yet the author wants to be able to claim he's poc.

thank you for this breakdown. i agree with a lot of it. i think what rory is missing is not the work ethic but the assertiveness and will to take advantage of her connections/privileges. she is probably a good journalist and she works hard but in journalism you get ahead by fostering connections and being loud and pushy. in that way mitchum was right but it's because journalism is inherently broken like that.

regarding the wings as sex organs...there are actually crazy cultures that obejctify womens body parts, including hair. the reason for veiling ones head which is actually found in many religions and not just one is the idea that it arouses the patriachs ...so i appreciate her trying to create a misogynist culture where wings on women are forbidden where ti supposed to be natural; just like hair is natural but women are still honor killed or policed for not covering them even though hair is natural for us. of course the origins of such veiling or covering up are ignored now, and it is being interpreted in different ways like veiled fashion or religious veiling or protecting your head from the heat or cold

I personally did not find the Feyre and Tamlin love story to be believable until the very end. I didn’t feel them falling in love or feel a deep connection between them. It just felt like the author was telling me they were supposed to be in love so therefore they were. Just seemed like they were kinda horny for each other and that’s it. In general I really didn’t like this book and can’t continue with the series. I don’t get why it’s so hyped.

Like I get it, Jacob Elordi has a way of playing aggressive mentally ill men. He can do it probably better than anyone in his generation. But he’s not Heathcliff and I’m concerned there’s going to be some aggressive spray tanning in the name of ‘what he might have just been tan you don’t know’ like we didn’t read the book. And Margot Robbie has fantastic range. But I don’t know if it’s the best fit for her. I want to see actual outcasts and not pretty people pretending to be mentally ill. Cathy and Heathcliff were fucked up, but they were fucked up in the same ways, broken along the same fault lines, and that’s part of what makes the story enduring. How she found her match and chose society, to her own ruin.

Girl preach. It was the 2017 version which had a black man and they were all very young. It was so good just the visual of it. I’m tired of the same story from famous white people doing nothing interesting with all the drama that’s in the text. Edit to add because when I get excited I black out: I want to see ugly little people. I think it make the story so much more fun and the beauty in finding someone unattractive beautiful would be refreshing

yeah, I‘m not so sure that if Paris had been deeply critisized by the person that she considered to be the ultimate expert in the professional field that she wanted she would have bounced back so easily. And she literaly shut down from the world when she was not doing well as the editor in the Yale newspaper. Having a strong, obnoxious personality is often confused with having a strong sense of self, and I think you are making the same mistake. I think in the revival they changed Rory‘s personality so that it matched people‘s criticism of her, because the revival is not a good show and that Rory is not the same as the original one
