I believe they are called parch marks when you can see foundations and archeology in grass. I know in the UK, they take advantage of dry, hot weather and send drones and planes up to photograph landscapes (esp. agricultural land and lawns) because you can see clear outlines of archeology from Victorian, Georgian, Tudor buildings and gardens all the way back to roman, iron age and stone age etc burials, and archeology.

Many of the Time Team episodes on YT show the archaeologists using aerial photos of such outlines to show where to begin their ground surveys and trenches. It's amazing how an ancient Roman villa or Bronze Age ditch still shows up after all these centuries.

in the good old days photographs were taken from small aircrafts or (old) military intelligence photographs are also often taken for analysis (at least here in germany, probably the only good thing of us having this cursed nazi history - being spyed at by the allied forces, who might give access to old photographs of crop fields and meadows).
today a lidar scan can provide much more information. the use of drones and aerial photography with drones is nowadays so affordable it’s normal to use these technologies for any larger scale excavation documentation or survey or to understand the position of a smaller or bigger place in the geographic relief and circumstances.
when it comes to coloration in aerial photography differences in soil also make a difference with
      - frost and thawing, different color and ability to retain warmth from sunlight of soil materials as well as shade of otherwise almost invisible elevations can really show when white ice or snow makes it very clear
      - and as here differences in color of plants due to water and nutrient scarcity on top of foundations and stones OR ample water and nutrient supply on top of former ditches, trenches and pits
these things also mess with the ripening of otherwise more and more standardized crops.
      very useful tool 😊

What you did there, Kaleb, was nothing short of sheer, amazing artistry! It’s fantastic how original it looks - this house got sooo lucky when you plunked your money down and invested your dreams into it.
Like everyone here, I hope you get the needed rest so you can completely heal and recover. I know it’s hard with summer flying by, but don’t rush yourself. You have so many interests and talents that you can make a zillion wonderfully entertaining videos with Kim’s help until you’re certain you go back to work without fear of reinjury. And maybe John and whoever else you might have to help could start on stripping paint on the second floor with the lift in your absence.
There are so many wonderful ideas here for the lot next door. Perhaps you can build a hedge or a low brick or stone wall across the front of the outline of the Hall house, leaving a gap to pass through where the front door would have been. I think you mentioned the possibility of a gazebo and perhaps you could build a small one where the bay was - the shape already lends itself to that. Just musing aloud. 😊

I follow a channel based in Adelaide and there are many such homes. But they are ripped down and immediately replaced by hideous, characterless blocks of condos. The channel I follow videos these homes for posterity prior to their being knocked down. Such a shame - cottages, Federation villas, bungalows…right up through 1970s built homes. And a large number of cottages and bungalow style homes in the country in SA and especially in Victoria.
Judging from the comments on his videos, it happens everywhere around the world.

    • @stevenbalekic5683

      @@Lucinda_Jackson
Those houses knocked down in Adelaide are usually only old government housing...they were built after ww2 in large areas for returned soldiers and people who are struggling. Most people who lived in them eventually got their jobs and saved money to buy their own houses and moved out. Then these housing areas became a little ghetto where welfare people lived so the government sold the whole areas off to developers and bought individual houses in every area to prevent bad areas happening.
Those government houses are okay but very small inside, the bathroom is through the laundry and the kitchen is absolutely tiny...it was built to a budget and nearly all identical layout and looking...all were two houses attached.
Since these areas sometimes are not too far from the city centre they are desirable for high density developments.
But in general there are no large areas of normal houses knocked down anywhere in Adelaide. Only one or two might be new builds on any given street or an owner with a large block will subdivide and build houses there.
Also the empty areas with most houses gone is not something that happens in Adelaide or Australia ... if the old government housing areas were demolished then the areas usually pretty quickly filled.
In this video the whole area has just become deserted and the houses left to collapse because the people left to live elsewhere.

Um, I watch the videos every week. There are sometimes entire blocks of lovely old homes destroyed. And many, many individuals. Each video features at least two homes, generally, unless there’s a row of them. The saddest are the old early cottages, the old villas, and the Federation villas. I’m partial to the early bungalows from the late teens and twenties. Soon there won’t be many left at this rate…

The majority of the houses in Adelaide are the types you see in the videos. I know because I was born in Adelaide and have lived there on and off between 1981 and 2000 and have lived there permanently since. Most demolished houses are either too far gone to renovate because it was used as a rental, it wasn't updated with the times, repairs weren't carried out over the years or the house has foundation issues causing the house to crack...but it is not as bad as you made it out to be.
Nearly every house in Adelaide was either built out of stone (the oldest ones), brick and stone or brick...there was some cheap rubbish built in the 60's and 70's where asbestos was used but thankfully they are pretty rare...there was also some British kit homes shipped over and built in low income areas in the late 1800's usually made of corrugated iron.
My house is an average bungalow built in the 1920's, it has leaded glass on the upper windows frontside, a verandah with heavy pillars out front, a pink bath tub and pedestal basin and ornate ceilings in the loungeroom, bedrooms and kitchen.
Even though it isn't renovated (kitchen, bathroom, laundry and toilet) the house is well maintained so things don't disintegrate.
Although the front right side corner is sinking a little and cracks have formed.

And your house is exactly what I see in the videos. They are not corrugated iron, they are stone or brick and stone and of the styles and time periods I have told you. Perhaps you are simply unaware. But you are right about one thing - those blocks don’t stay empty long. They are instantly built with ugly blocks of condos and apartments.

This is a dangerous business we are in! I once threw out my back when I bent over to pick up a pen on the ground. Took a whole week to get over that one! Nice work on the facade....you have the patience of an artist. ;-)
Here's the ultimate challenge: Excavate Mr Hall's basement and rebuild his house!

By the way, the corbel repair is incredible!
You sir, are a modern day Michelangelo! By the way, how much working time does that stuff allow you to build up layers? It would be a disaster if it hardened up while you were still in the sculpting phase! And I’m betting the weather/heat isn’t helping. By the way, take care of that shoulder, you only have two of them and now you could overwork the other one! Easy does it, Caleb. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Your work in bringing back the original appearance of the limestone facade is jaw dropping.when you've brought it all the way back most people driving by will think how lucky the owner is to have a home in such original condition. And they will have no sense of the hours of work and cost of materials to give that view of original. Happily those of us following you can point to this channel and say "Follow and be impressed". I am more and more impressed with each post you put out.

The reconstituted sills and corbels are nothing less than FANTASTIC. You have put so much of yourselves into this house it is amazing. From your plastering and stripping and curly pine reveals, as well as the lavatory install and all the immense labor and effort that went into that, you are both remarkable. I cannot wait for the mansard to get done, truly the icing on the cake. Keep up the good work and don't overdo.

You are doing such a fantastic job,,,,it’s such hard work,,,,my husband and I completely redid our first home,,,a house moved when the highway went in,,,no heat ductwork going to the second floor,,,14 broken windows in wooden frames, with rope pulleys to raise and lower the windows,,wood floors …crack,in main ceiling from the move,,bad woodwork,,all solid wood doors,,,there was a side walk,,but it was covered in dirt because there were no gutters! The front yard went four inches overgrown on the front sidewalk,,,lots of work,,,,we were just coming from an apartment,so no stove or refrigerator…we finished the upstairs bedrooms and the bathroom downstairs,,,moved in and worked from May until August,,to get it livable,,I had two kids in school,,off for summer and I was pregnant,,! It was our first home,,,I’ll always remember it fondly…

Incredible progress! Caleb, you're a natural at this, thanks to your artistic talent. And at the end of this process, just think about how many people you can teach these skills to, so they can restore their own homes. It's a beautiful thought! Also, I hope you feel better soon. Get lots of rest and don't worry about us -- we'll still be here when you get back.

I thought it looked sharper and had a wider field of vision, but maybe that’s all due to settings. I know zip about drones. Or any photography, really. But I did wonder if it was a new one so it definitely looks different.

Kaleb, I’m really sorry to hear that you have an injury but it’s not surprising considering how hard you work. Experts agree that rest combined with snuggling with your pups has remarkable therapeutic benefits so I hope that you take time for that this week - nothing is more important than your physical well-being. The before and after comparison of the sill and two corbels is absolutely amazing -you have such an eye for detail!
