----------------------------
Rakim recently sat down for a live edition of the Touré Show podcast, and in this clip he breaks down several of the songs that he considers his best work. The tracks he named are "Mystery (Who is God?)," "Juice," and "Mahogany," which he says was inspired by Diana Ross in the 1972 film Lady Sings the Blues.
To hear more of their conversation, including why Rakim says he pushes himself to rhyme at an elite level, hit the above clip.
He once said he never used profanity in his music because he knew his parents would be listening. Thats a real man ( NOT NIGGA) who has respect and is still regarded as one of thee greatest.
He's definitely used profanity before
@Seyi Ajayi in the song mahogany he says f*** around and missed the show
You write even though I never use the n word myself it's time for people to stop using that fucking stupid word my man and I'm mexican by the way
Nah... A "real" man does what the fuck he wants...

Obviously you’re not familiar with Rakim and his voice, speech.
i hold the microphone like a grudge

I've met Rakim on a basketball court around my way, in the mid 90's. Very humble and cool dude. I told him that he was the greatest emcee in rap history, and he was very modest about it, saying that rappers like Melle Mel and Grandmaster Caz were better. Gotta love a brother who knows his history.
Grandmaster Caz ans Melle Mel are lethal mcs that never gets mention, if you a true hip hop head you knows..
@@learner5090 right but everyone says jsy z and lil Wayne are better and also nobody never mentions yhe 80s rappers I'm starting to like 80s rap better than 90s rappers mow in a way even though I respect both
Melle Mel? Come on bruh, there’s something called “wrong humility”. Rakim could smoke Mel any day within two bars.
@@smavi4133there would be no Rakim without Melle and the other forefathers. Hes acknowledging hes just carrying on tradition in remembrance of those who came before him. Young cats can learn from that kind of honor, humility and conduct.
I am glad that Rakim did not lower his vibration and standard to that of gangster rapper.
Rakim has always been about raising the bar and re-defining the artform of rhyming. He appealed to the cerebral side of rap, and he walked the path less traveled. He may have sacrificed more money with not following the formula of Dre -- but at least he maintained his integrity.
As a grown man, you have to stand for something. Respect to the God MC.
Maybe he could have mad something like a Good Kid, Maad City.
Nothing wrong with being weird. I like who I am, so what others think can go to hell.
Jonathan Soko why?
suaved well said👏🏼
Jonathan Soko and you sound like a bitch lol
I wish he was approached by dj premiere to do an album together instead of Dre, I think that would've worked out perfectly. Peace to the God.
tony almeda FACTS!!
When I B On Tha Mic on The Master is an amazing track. Imagine a whole album of tracks like that WOW!

He's the best MC not a god
Dre tried to get the Legend to go down Devils Lane. I'm glad he resisted the temptation to mislead.
Dre is a hypocrite. I remember how he was condemning gangster rap & saying that gangsta Rap is dead after he left death Row. With his been there done that crap
Vinmoonsu then his career was almost dead
💯
Dre's a fucking sell-out, just like all big-time rappers. He writes about what he's told to write about.
Dre thought he could take the game with him, but Pac had it on lock & I'm pretty sure folks was waiting on Snoop's next album.
Banter Bulldogge 🤔 u buggin the fuck out...😂😂😂😂

Studio Gangsta
Rakims accent is old school NY It's good to hear that. Being from the west, the NY accent was kinda annoying/arrogant to me. Now, I appreciate the sound. Its good to hear someone from the East SOUND like someone from the East. 💯✊🏾
that's funny you should say that some people feel that the West Coast accent sounds funny lol
You from the WestCoast. What do you care how somebody from New York sound?!
Thats the raw black masculinity you dont hear too often these days with the fear of unapologetic "black" hetersexual males and promotion and force feeding of homosexualism
@@prestonjefferson3349 Because we're bombarded with the New York sound since birth if we watch television, movies or listen to radio, because a lot of stuff is made there, and other people are more observant than you apparently, if you're dumb enough to complain that someone else is noticing an accent from another region. Here, I'll put it in your terms: I don't care where you're from, and it isn't your business to complain about people being smarter than you.
The Southern accent is the worst
That combination btw. Dre&Rakim was heavily anticipated. It was sad n great that it never dropped.
I've always loved Rakim's rhymes/raps/lyrics... He is the 'GOD of Rap'.. and of Rappers / MCs..His l;yrics are on a level that simply CANNOT be approached by ordinary artists.. He's been my favorite artist since the early eighties, when he first distributed his very first cassette tapes on the streets. The DON of ghetto music, as far as I'm concerned anyway
Ra never sold out by gangsta rappin, talkin beef w/ Dre. That's not even his style.
Dre was only gangsta when it came to beating up woman
lee shut the hell up it's always some dumb fuck bringing up stupid shit they do that shit to Mayweather so what everybody knows stop bringing up old shit stay on topic
lee that's your mom job
True
and shooting guns at them through bathroom doors
lee .. fact easy e & Pac 50 is rite dre f... fake producer
As much as I like Dr.Dre as one of the greatest producers to ever do it, I feel like the more successful he got the more paranoid he got about experimenting. Dre has said Rakim was one of his idols, so he should have understood what the sound should have been. However, I think Dre has too many people around him telling him that he can only do Gangsta Rap when he's clearly talented enough to expand his sound.
Not only that he’s too much of a perfectionist. Detox might never come out
Dre ain’t the producer he just a dope mixer, all others do the beats he just takes credit for it.
I was a fiend way before I became a teen my intro to rakim

This is the man who changed rap and hip hop forever, the real GOAT
Rafat Shareef influence and sales don't mean anything. Imo Rakim is 2nd best. K Rino is first
@@seekerundue man I have never even heard of the guy, never in anybody's top 30. He's prolly like DMX or something like that
Rafat Shareef listen to these songs by him:
K Rino - If Words Could Kill
K Rino - Duality
K Rino - Feel My Flow
@@seekerundue I guess that's your opinion. He's not my favourite rapper he does sound a lot like DMX and his flow isn't the best, at least to me. My top rappers consist of Andre 3000, Big Boi, Tupac, Biggie, Eminem, Rakim, Jay-Z, Nas, Ice Cube, and Guru.
Rafat Shareef nice list. Imo top 10 goats
K Rino
Rakim
Chino XL - Wordsmith
Kool G Rap - Executioner Style
Eminem
Nas
MC Ren - Same Old Shit
AZ - The Format
Big L
RA The Rugged Man - Uncommon Valor
Those are songs too if u wanna check them out. MC Ren is like Tupac and biggie in one person--but with street cred too
and those beats from rakim. went on to become the classic known as get rich or die tryin
all worked out for the best
Heat and Back Down was originally for Rakim💯
Really!?
I don't understand why is Dre is getting hate in all these comments. Dre gave him an opportunity and put some money in his pocket. Him and Dre didn't see eye to eye on the direction of album, so they split ways. It's called business.
Jimmys Bakery, I get what you're saying, but in this case, opportunity goes both ways. Dre would cash in on Rakim's ability and legecy as well. Should have been a win/win but being the man Rakim is you can't dismiss the fact he is far from some controllable little boy. Not to be manipulated in any sense of the word.
I respect your opinion regardless 👍🏽🎙️

I still have rakim as my top ten. I love his music.
I mean most of the rappers Dre worked with throughout his career were ''gangsta'' rappers so it's understandable but Rakim always been on some Hip Hop shit.
James Wilson You right I meant to say Rakim was just on some lyrical acrobatic type shit.
Dre had Eminem at his peak at the time and Eminem isn't remotely gangsta rap.
Rakim was in the socially conscious time w Public enemy, intelligent hoodlum and company
@@samsonokoro5036 he talked about driving in a car talking to his daughter with her dead mother in the trunk.
Samson Okoro not to mention Kendrick. Or Busta Rhymes. Or D.O.C.
Dre and Rakim just met at the wrong time. Plain and simple. Dre wanted some old school, grimey, street Rakim shit and Ra wanted some new more mature stuff. Bad timing, that's all.
Nah, Dre wanted to keep doing that "what's good for a few is bad for the hood" stuff and Ra is true to knowledge of self and promoting ideas based on cultural awareness. Dre went from rapping about how he didn't smoke weed to being Mr. Chronic. Ra? Steady and true since My Melody.
Age difference, I think plays a big part in classic collabs or everything...love hiphop 💛💛🌎🌏🌍🌋🌋✈✈👑👑
Aye real talk i think if they revisit that at this point and time things would be different. Ra need that production the L's are there he just need that ish he someone to give him some slaps.
The 13th letter is underrated. "Who is God" was on there if I'm not mistaking

Rakim Top Grade Choice. No Sell Out. Morality , Integrity . Powerhouse .
This was honest, funny and brilliant! Thanks Rakim for being you!
I still listen to the rhyme he did on the Truth Hurts song "So Contagious"...."just anotha 100 mil and imma quit for good"
Clayton DaGreatOne *“So Addictive”, and yeah, his verse is fire
I really wish that and Dre and Rakim could have done an album together. The music would have been INCREDIBLE and RAKIM would have of course delivered lyrically. At this point in Dre’s career he could put out anything and it’d sell well, so why not try and give this album another shot?
If you can see it you can solve the mystery, the answer revolves around your history
So carefully I drop this degree scientifically & realistically
I respect that. Damn I wish that Dre and Rakim album would have dropped.

His lyrics stand the test of time. In my opinion still the best rapper alive...easily!

Respect, Rakim.
Living legend dope legendary ❤ much respect from Haiti to RAKIM 👊
Paid in full is worth it’s weight in gold, but when I heard who is god for the first time, I knew that was the type of rap and hip hop that was me. His lyrics spoke to the higher self and my true reasons for writing in the first place; to understand the world around me!
Man.... finally a personable & more down to earth Rakim.
Glad to see he opened up some💯
im 25 when i heard rakim rapping on the radio....i was like wow, this dude raw. pure 100% cocaine flow no cut, like the coke before it leave Columbia.
Been listening to hip hop since I was in my early teens in the late 80's. Whenever I'm asked my favorite hip hop song of all time, I say Lyrics of Fury - no question.
One of the most...unheard, underappreciated, WRITER in the FREE world. 😎 Imho
The GOAT, plain and simple. Never sold his soul for a piece of paper, never agreed to take part in injuring his community, never was he not a dope MC when handed the mic. The realest to ever do it. He chose honor over paper. Takes a strong man to reach that level of honor.
One of the best emcee ever.
Looking at these interviews, I've seen Ra smile and laugh more than at any point throughout his career. I wish he would have let his sense of humor show a little bit in his music. We all know you ain't no joke but even real gangsters got jokes every now and then. Ra talking about his pops and fixing airplanes was priceless...
That album should be 50/50. For some people Dre (it is the GOAT) and for other Rakim (it is the GOAT). Dre should leave Rakim with all the weight of the writing and make the beats that reach the masses without forgetting that he is working with Rakim.
Eric b in my book is the king of rap always was no one can come close to his style i think the reason why he didn't do it it's 2 diffrent styles of rapping Eric b is real rap straight from the hart dr dre gangstar rap it's not his style good for you Eric b go with what your hart tells you the true king of rap keep knocking them dead much love
Good for Rakim!
In my opinion nothing has negatively impacted the black community as much as gangster rap. Almost all black kids glorify gangster rap and try to live the life they hear on the radio.
Rakim my favorite mcee of all time.
Great interview, very humble and intelligent man. Rakim is a leader.
He's the only rapper that make you think New York...and he walks hop and talks hip hop
Rawjan 39 "the only rapper"? Lol... u know how many rappers have come from new york since the 70s? Lol
Marc NY c'mon man. Did you really just post this? I was just saying when I see Rakim I think New York and hip hop. Of course I know Grandmaster flash, Moe Dee, Treaches 3, Run DMC and list goes on. When I see Fat Joe it's just Fat Joe . He doesn't give me that New York vibe. Hold Up....... Too Me.
Rawjan 39 u dont get a new york vibe from any of the new york rappers other than rakim... ok dude lol
No Nas? Kool G Rap?
What about Nas
Rakim never sold out, yet another reason he’s the GOAT 🐐
Rakim is one of the only Mc that could turn down Dre and still be a legend. Imagine where Eminem would be if he never signed with Dre.
Y'all should go back and listen to canibus punish him ft. Rakim
Cani who. Dont have me call up LL Cool J ! lol
@@daebow1 I litterly never hear people say ll won that beef anymore I guess your one of the reamaing few a rare find
What a star. Always respected the art and never sold out. Dres one of the best producers in rap but is also willing to sacrife integrity for wealth. He wants pop rappers like Eminem and 50 cent to target the mainstream
With all due respect, Rakim will be always one of my GOAT's, it wasn't about that gangsta rap shit, if that was the case, Busta would a been left...Dre' not just a dope producer, he got a dope production team, n that's what Rakim missed. Busta came with that str8 east coast hip hop shit n laid it on west coast tracks n went platinum, just like 50. Saying all that, Follow the Leader still bang today!
Mr. Cap Nina all the beats 50 got from Dre were originally for Rakim
Rakim is a deep rapper. He is different and introspective. He doesn't have to move with the crowd. He moves the crowd
He's the reason why real hip hop well never die!😎
This is too funny. I was wondering why Ra was touring in a sprinter instead of flying all this time...lolol. I got over my fear of flying 6 years ago. I went to New Orleans and I had a couple panic attacks but I did it and I love flying now. I went to Dallas twice by myself after that. :)
He comes off of topic easily on the (Best lyrics he ever done)🤷🏽♂️

Ra is real and pure hip hop. Dre wanted Rakim to step into an element he doesn't rock with. I like Dre but I'm glad he left.
"I'd rather die by living brave than live like a slave, I'd rather be broke than be fake and get paid"
Rakim is an ICON!
Dre basically wanted Ra to spit JUICE on every track and Ra wasn't into that space at the time. I can't blame Dre, to be honest 'cause JUICE is one of the hardest joints ever.
JONAH you up to something

Yo my only goal as an artist, is to push a message ya know, like why even do this if I'm not impacting people, positive or negative I don't care.. A lot of people just want the cash and I do want money but money holds no deeper value than what we give it, the game, THE HUSTLE diluted the culture, and love for hip hop, turned to love for money... Its a damn shame

You ever see the God actually smile? This was the first time I heard him laugh but I don’t think he smiled while he was laughing. I love Ra for that
it nuttin funny stop smilin be still dont nuttin move but the money
Rakim definitely is the Microphone Fiend. He’s holding on to that mic like he’s bout to spit flames lol
Its sad how narrow mindedness prevented a potential classic from dropping
It is called having morals and values. Rakim never has been about promoting death and violence. He has been the same with uplifting records. That is not being narrow minded. It just didn't work because they had different views in life.
THEDARKSIDEOFTHEFORCE66 exactly bro, Dr Dre is the one I'm referring to as narrow minded bro
Cool I dig it then you are right!

Dre should’ve let Rakim be Rakim. Too bad he tried to change what works. Proud of Rakim for NOT fallin for that “trash talking” type of hip hop he wanted him to do.
