I felt the exact same way about Digital Extremes's previous game "Pariah." The storytelling was pretty much nonexistent for the most part. All I remember was that I had to keep chasing after that girl who kept either running away or getting captured, while the game drip-fed awkward exposition during certain cutscenes. The Shroud War was never explored, and the Shroud themselves were only actually revealed in the very last level.

This is one of those games you'd find in Walmart barging bins and/or Gamestop discount sections years after it released, and for some reason you'd get a hold of it and either play it once or a shit ton. Ahh, the joys of being a poor, young gamer in the 2010's.

Whole game was conceived as a futuristic space action (basically warframe, sans the grind and multiplayer), but then problems with development hit, and Digital Extreme cobbled together some assets and inserted them into "soviet spy shooter" game. And there you have it, Grineer soldiers are elite goons, alien frog/lizard things are bosses and all that is set in the fictional soviet country, with AK as your go-to weapon. It looks schizophrenic as hell, some parts of the game clearly weren't made for this kind of setting.

Yea, the developers didn't realize the game either.
DE's creative director always does streams before a major update, and in the latest one he was asked about dark sector. He said something amoung the lines of "if we ever get around to touch dark sector the first thing I'd do is completely rewrite the game"
Honestly I really want that to happen someday. DE is very capable of doing a compelling story as it was shown in pretty much every quest in warframe, so it would be interesting to see a single player game that they have full control over.

To be honest its kinda neat seeing what from Dark Sector was put into Warframe, gameplay mechanic wise. Such as the elemental stuff, the glaive itself (and the ability to detonate it), a not so "recent" edition of having the glaive and a secondary out together, and seeing the origin of Ivara's navigator ability (controlling the flight of a projectile). Just ya know, massively improved and smoothed out compared to the jank of Dark Sector.

They officially said Dark Sector is NOT a prequel and inspired Warframe only in the art and some concepts. The Excalibur proto skin does say it's "the first tenno" but it actually doesn't link DS with WF, rather now with Umbra it seems like the whole description to the proto skin has been scrapped canonically as well (Umbra is now the describer of the first warframes and it's much fancier an appearence).

Ah, the Gears craze, also known as the dark ages of third person shooters. When every game had ugly desaturated graphics, boring cover-based combat, regenerating health, weapon limits and a laughably edgy tone. Dark sector came to being when DE went around showing their concept of what later became warframe. But publishers were like "yeah nah, make it cold war era and a cover shooter" so they made it just that, and it turns out that this is what happens when you force a project to something it was never supposed to be.
On another note, the original comment tries to answer a question that was already answered in the actual video. In fact, the question was answered right as the question was asked. I know it's hard sometimes to not comment before finishing the video, but at least try to watch the video before commenting.

I beat many B-games because I enjoy playing them. I notice a lot of "underrated" games are being discussed generation later as if they were good. Singularity and Dark Sector were ones I remember being talked so often for being how "actually good" they were. As a person who beat both, I could never agree to it.
I've subscribed Jarek for showing me so many hidden gems that I can easily buy on Steam. When this popped up on my feed, I was afraid Jarek was going to say this is a hidden gem (I love his "actually good" analysis videos and found many great games), but I was relieved to know what he really thought of it. As an avid Warframe player I can honestly say that I understand where your view of Warframe comes from. It is not for everyone. I will give my view of it vs Dark Sector for those interested.
One thing Warframe did that many people dislike is that they intentionally leave much of the backstory obscure at the start, only giving you a hint. As you play the game you can come across codex entries, descriptions of prime items, even data files to read in the Sanctuary about past stories of different people, and then you learn more as your character starts to remember their past. I have yet to see evidence of this in the game Dark Sector. Many people I have seen play this game say that they wish they had more backstory and a better explanation to what is happening, even it you have to search for it. The way it happens with Warframe where I have to search for it makes me feel like I accomplished something and makes the information more valuable to me since I had to work for it.
I Also believe that Dark Sector turned out poorly as a result of poor choices and regulations set in place by the publishers. Even Digital Extremes has stated numerous times that they were not happy with how Dark Sector turned out and that they basically felt like it was the hot trash they were forced to produce rather than what they wanted. When DE tried to get Warframe published no publisher would touch it because they all claimed that it was doomed for failure and they wanted it changed entirely into something that it just was not meant to be and DE eventually decided that they would go through all the trouble and hard work to publish it themselves. If they had done what they had with Dark Sector and given into the demands of the publishers they probably would have been forced to produce another hot mess that they would ultimately hate.
Lesson from this, maybe publishers should be more lenient about how the developer wants to make their games. I mean, the publisher does have to keep its own interests guarded but Dark Sector versus Warframe is evidence to what happens when a publisher is to strict and refuses almost all freedom of development compared to the true art that can come when they are given some freedom. I am not saying that Warframe is the perfect game but it turned out as good as it did because DE was able to freely make what they had envisioned.

I just played Dark Sector, yes its cluncy and sometimes unfair, but when it came out most of the games was like that.Kinda remind me of Infernal. And that Warframe comment is understandable, but the story and the universe will get you if you look away from the grind. The most popular games nowdays are the same, hell even put casino in the game for a 60$ price. The only problem with the game is the devs want a jack of all trades game, but never finish gimics. And now its not a small company anymore. But i still like the game because it gives a fighting sandbox. dark Sector also have some hidden features, like if you throw frozen glaive into a waterstream it creates an ice cover. Or eletricity in the water. Also you got powers like shield and absorb and explode the elemental energy. But the blackmarket sucks. The weapon mods also useless and unequipable from a weapon. This game's name sounded familair as well as the game cover, turns out I'm pretty sure that I watched rasan69's playthrough of the game like four years ago. The strangest part is despite not even looking at that channel for YEARS I still remembered this game being played by him. I also remember that there are two playthroughs of his I never finished watching.

The same people made Pariah 3 years prior, which is like a toned-down, bland and consolified Unreal 2 and The Darkness II 4 years later, which turned out rather solid, the entire lineup of these developers is a mixed-bag of games ranging from bargain-bin jank to something serviceable...but it's the kind I love exploring more than anything mainstream, and I'm always happy to see you cover them, it's far more interesting to see different views on argueable games as opposed to an already praised-to-death game receiving all the more praise from yet another youtuber.

Somebody correct me if Im wrong - but I remember being able to charge the glaive, control it and angle it around the shield enemies to clip them in the shoulder which makes them drop their shields? Definitely not obvious and Im not even sure if I am remembering correctly since its been so long.

Yes, the ability is called Aftertouch. You unlock it later in mission 2.
You throw the glaive then hold C, it brings you into a slowmotion effect with the camera centered on the glaive, able to control it entirely.

I played this briefly on Xbox 360, I don't know how far I got but once the glaive gimmick wore off it was boring and tedious.
Also that button on the other side of the fence was a royal bitch to hit using a gamepad. The glaive turn speed is sooo slow and you had to pass it between the fence and skybox. *Insta fail if you hit the freaking sky 3 feet above the fence!!!*

As someone that really liked this game, I really do agree with a lot of the points you make. I played it a couple years ago again, and I remember how frustrating the game honestly comes off. The glaive is a really cool weapon to use, and it's honestly my main melee weapon when I Play Warframe, but in this game it is kind of a pain.

I can see how dark sector could be a prequel to warframe however all i can say is a massive time difference

  • @FinalLuigi
    @FinalLuigi 5 років тому

Dark Sector is interesting. While the game was released in 2008 for 360 and PS3, the PC version was originally slated to be out alongside the console versions, but the game just kind of fell on the wayside and people thought it was cancelled. Then in 2009, on a random youtube channel no less, proof of the game being played on PC was posted, and apparently the PC release was limited to Russia; not too surprising since a lot of random ports showed up on PC only for Russia, such as 2005 NARC being released there in 2008. The version on Steam is a fan translation of the Russian game, and the game was ported to PC by Russian publisher Noviy Disk, who also ported FROM Software's Ninja Blade. In addition to the weird bugs and lackluster settings, the PC version omits the online multiplayer mode from the console release, though some sources say you can use hamachi or the like to sort of have online multiplayer.

It's obvious that it's made by a small team with a limited budget, but the world feels good and sucks me in. The tense parts had me holding my breath at times and you can tell it was made by true fans of the series.
