  • Does your baby fall to the side, scream or constantly move around when sitting in the baby highchair? If this is your baby, then your high chair is too big. A high chair which is too big can lead to fussy eaters and a baby who won't eat solids. By making some simple adjustments you can ensure the highchair provides the postural support your baby needs to help them eat well.

    Unfortunately, all high chairs are too big for 6/7/8/9/10 month old babies and need adjusting. These simple tips will make a huge difference to your baby's willingness to eat and remain seated in a high chair. Let me know how you go adjusting your baby's high chair?

    Omg yes! We spent so long researching high chairs and found one we like with a lot of features. But now I realize that it is way too big! It can be adjusted somewhat, but the adjustments still aren’t enough for my six month old. I’ve used a lot of little towels now to fix her high chair.
    We’ve been doing solids for almost a week, and she seems to like the food, and wants to interact with them on the tray, but just couldn’t reach out really (so I’ve been often handing food/a spoon to her). I am sure the high chair being too big is a big part of the problem! You almost need a baby sized high chair, just like there are newborn sized cribs (bassinets).

There are slits for them at the back of the high chair and in between legs, but no slits in towels, would the straps go around the towels? Or it’s necessary to cut holes in the towels to get the straps through?

  • @hipp_katt
    @hipp_katt 10 місяців тому

    Thank you so much for this video. I hope you see this. About the foot rest, our high chair has an adjustment so it goes flat, so baby is sitting with his legs straight out, but supported. It's that ok too? Or do you recommend the way you showed here is better?

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  10 місяців тому +1

      This is ok but if you can lower it so that their hips, knees and ankles are at 90, 90, 90 that is a better option. When you have their legs straight out in front is encourages them to tilt their hip backwards and slide down the highchair. Also with their hips tilted backwards they want to lean backwards and this causes them to be further away from the food.

  • @livingwithlivestockguardians
    @livingwithlivestockguardians 2 роки тому +2

    Watched this even though my baby is now a year old. I'm happy to see the foot support issue brought up on here. It was the only thing that needed adjusted for my baby at 6 months. She had started sitting up on her own between 4 and 5 months. by the time she was ready for solid food she was sitting up right without any support needed and she was really tall so nothing other than foot support was needed. I'm not sure who designs highchairs, but my child is nearly too tall for her highchair based on the manual, her feet still don't reach the footrest they have on it. I think maybe if a 5-year-old was in the chair they could use the footrest that comes with it.
    i used elastic to attach a box to the highchair so i can keep moving it as she grows.
    anyway, do you have any videos or advice on when to transition toddlers/kids from the highchair to a regular chair at the table? Not what age but what set of skills they should have

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  2 роки тому +5

      Hi @Living with livestock guardians thanks so much for the message.
      Basically for a child to successfully transition from the highchair to a regular chair at the table you still want to follow the same principles. So you want to ensure:
      - their feet are supported (their knees should be at 90 degrees and ankles should also be at 90 degrees)
      - the seat depth is not too long and cutting into the back of their knees which can cause pins and needles (so you should be able to place two fingers between the edge of the seat and the back of their knees)
      - their arms should be able to rest on the table when their elbows at at 90 degrees
      Unfortunately dining chairs are simply too big for children until they are at least 10 years of age. What I find is that children will sit on dining chairs when they are younger than 10 years of age but they find it really difficult to remain seated. They tend to kneel on the dining chair, perch on the edge of the seat so their feet touch the ground or simply stand up.
      I do recommend the tripp trapp chair (I also use this with my children) because it is a highchair which converts to a dining chair which children continue to use for 9+ years. Alternatively, you can get your little one to sit on a dining chair but I recommend:
      - you will need to raise the seat height (by using a high density foam)
      - provide a backrest because the seat depth will be too long
      - provide foot support.
      Hope that helps and wasn't too confusing!

      Hi Mary Ann if your little one can sit up with you holding them at the hips or ribs and they can keep their head up then you can use a high chair. You might just need to provide them with support at the side when they are using the highchair. Rolled up towels are often really helpful. In this video they baby I was adjusting the high chair for was not yet able to sit independently.

      Honestly glad I can help. Parenting can be overwhelming so if I am making it a little easier for new parents then that is amazing.

    Thanks for this video, Emma! Should we be encouraging anterior pelvic tilt while sitting in a high chair (e.g., with towel under the bum area), or is it better to get a neutral tilt?

      Hi! A neutral tilt is better. You want to avoid a posterior tilt though as this will encourage curving through the spine and make it difficult for the bub to reach the food.

    Just use a Trip Trap or a Nomi. They are perfect and can be used even by adults. Totaly worth spending the money.

    Hi! I’m a fan of your channel. 😊 I am planning to buy a booster seat with removable tray instead of a high chair since we don’t have space. Is it okay? And for the reason also that my bub can also use it,sit on it as a chair while on the floor. Hope you can give me advice regarding my concern☺️ Thanks!

      Hi @mom’sworld by Kris it’s totally fine to use a booster seat if a high chair doesn’t fit in your house. I tend to like the Ingenuity Baby Base 2-in-1 Seat best. Booster seats are still to big for 6 month old babies so you will need to give your bub extra support at the side when they are sitting in the seat. Also look at the weight limit of the booster seat - if it is 15kg then I would look at other options as your little one will still need a booster seat or adjusted seating for the first 5 years of life. One that can be attached to a dining chair is ideal too as you will be able to have family style meals.

      Hi @Ingrid Lim I used a Stokke Tripp Trapp with my first child and then a cheaper high chair called the Mocka for my son (similar features - but I like the baby set in the Stokke better as it is more sturdy and supportive)

      Great video..all your content has been extremely informative and helpful..I am about to invest in a high chair and just wondering why you decided to change to the Mocka after using the Stokke Tripp chair?

    so...why even buy these shit chairs you need to fix yourself?

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  6 місяців тому

      Sometimes chairs are handed down from friends or relatives, or purchased before learning about how to select a good high chair. Limited budget might be another reason. Whatever the reason, if people do have a chair that's not ideal, rather than buying a new one they can make these modifications to help make them more suitable for their baby.
