    ❤😅love how you share the good, the bad, and the ugly😘👍good pictures of that snake too...my neighbor down the street has a Butchart Garden style, she has forgotten more than I will ever learn about gardening❤, I was visiting her one morning, and to visit with her, you have to talk while she is gardening(she wears coveralls), so I'm standing there and catch some movement out of the corner of my eye. I look and all these meticulously pruned shrubs, are covered on the top - with garter snakes sunning themselves!!! Dozens!!!! Now when I see a snake, I call that gardening time - d.o.n.e!! And I run into the house, lol!! But snakes, especially here, are GOOD for the garden, they eat slugs!!! 🤢, anyhoo, I am learning to want snakes in my yard now!!! We have a 250gal water tank that we need to set up. I want to put it at our 18x20 shed. But the shed needs a new roof! Arg, my friend calls these projects of mine, Draining The Swamp...he says you gotta clear the crocodiles out of the way🙃🙂🐊

Also to encourage people not to fall into the trap of thinking that if your not a professional plumber, construction person you need to call them every time. All about being frugal and the fun of learning! Yep love my King snakes. Have seen 3 so far.

    Roughly lay out the pipe to make sure you have enough pipe and fittings
    Ensure access points to clean out airborn sand that will build up in the pipe.

    PVC that is exposed to sunlight should be painted to prevent deterioration from UV light I learned that many years ago from a City of Los Angeles building inspector. Also, the purple primer "melts" or softens the pipe and should only be used on the thicker pvc, and not class pipe. Red Hot Blue Glue eliminates that step, but is more costly. I just found your channel and subscribed.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  2 роки тому

      Lynn the PVC is buried as you can see for the most part. The exposed stuff is all painted. Everyone I consulted about Schedule 40 PVC told me its super tough and thick and to use purple primer and glue. Just going by the experts. Delighted you came by and subscribed. Thanks!

    I'm disappointed that UA-cam didn't notify me that you had a new video up! I have the bell clicked to all notifications too, and I heard not a thing for the last 3 videos. That makes me disappointed as well pandachickenmama! I learned recently that youtube has thwarted email notifications and instead swapped it out for things being done through the mobile youtube app. Personally I am very over this app business. But in the meantime here is what youtube says. I hope its helpful in some way...
      If subscribers ring the bell, but turn off UA-cam notifications for their account or mobile app, they won't count toward this metric. Subscribers that “enabled UA-cam notifications” are signed in and can receive notifications on at least one device. These subscribers have turned on account notifications either:
      On a computer under Settings and then Notifications and then Channel subscriptions OR
      On mobile under Settings and then Notifications and then Subscriptions
      and have also enabled UA-cam notifications on at least one device:
      For computers, turn on Settings and then Notifications and then Computer notifications
      For mobile devices, make sure UA-cam app notifications are enabled within your device’s settings

    Good job Don and glad to see another video. But seems you did a lot more digging on that trench than necessary. Although it is good exercise digging. Have you ever thought about building a carport? It would give you a lot more roof space to collect more than double your water supply. Plus it keeps your car out of the hot summer sun. Just a thought. I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!!

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  2 роки тому +10

      Yes definitely a lot of digging! Part of it was that as you can see I ran both the 3" PVC and the 1 1/4" pipe in the same channel. But next time I will try to work smarter not harder to refine the width of the trench. You are RIGHT ON the money with the idea of a carport. It's in the works but has to happen after a big list of things like. solar, foundation for the building, water hooked up, propane hooked up, drywalling etc. LOL. Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year to you as well!

    Another comment, I seldom used the purple primer on non-pressurized pipes. I hate this stuff as it seems to stain everything in sight. The last house I Saul had a big purple stain on top of the dryer. I won’t say how it got there! The adhesive alone seals it quite well enough if there’s no pressure involved, but the purple primer is absolutely essential if you’re putting together pressurized water pipes.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  2 роки тому

      Thanks Scot! I did spill some purple primer here and there but figured I wanted to make super sure I did a great job of connecting the pipes together so as usual my motto is even if it's overkill its just a bit of money and hard work. I learned something with your comment though. Many thanks!

    Hello Don. As an Arizona native, my hats off to you in that at times parched environment and ability to save rain fall. A suggestion from someone who know alit about plumbing mistakes, lol. At your clean out y by your tank, you might want to places some pea gravel or similar rocks underneath your drain area. Otherwise the sandy soil will back fill the pipe. Just a thought. Nice job on the trenching though!

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  Рік тому

      Thanks so much for your comments. I actually placed a PVC cap at the end of the drain area so that no sand/soil can back fill the pipe. I need to clean the dirt in front of the cap out though. The plan is to do that before monsoon starts next year and also flush the whole pipe system with water which I can because of how its set up.

    Don. Been watching for a bit and subscribed. One comment on the downspout. I would add a clean out right at the cabin. You let the water fall into the pipe, then let it fill up say 36 inches and then at a 90 you can drop the water into the main supply to the tank. This will allow sediment to fall into the 36 inches of pipe then float to the 90 and then down to the tank.....keeps more fine mud out of the supply line.

    I bought a trenching shovel and it makes things so much easier. It is about 18 inches long and 4 or five inches at its widest. You don't have to move as much dirt or hit every rock in the area. The pipes could have been stacked if needed. Now if you're looking for a good work out, I read were ditch digging burned more calories than jogging.

    What happened the 1st time?
    The only time you need to worry about the pipe joints leaking after gluing is when the cut isn't straight. Burrs are no big deal. The solvents in the primer and glue melt them off.
    You need to connect to the fitting under the filler top. With that open you will get a lot of dirt and evaporation.
    Make a sight glass at the house end on the downspout with a bit of clear tube. Keep it shaded to prevent algae.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487

      Hi Charles! There was never really a 1st time. I was so worried it wouldnt work I dry fitted then duct taped it all to experiment to make sure water would dump into the tank. As I mentioned a total newbee to PVC etc. Thanks for all of your thoughtful suggestions!

For asethetic reasons wanted the tank off a bit so I can disguise it with shrubs etc. The solar rack is about 70 ft from the cabin. Fortunately I should have enough powerful panels purchased at this point to provide the power I need. Learning as I go so I can adjust if needed. Thanks as always for watching mate!
