  • After months of living with horrifically slow internet thanks to online research I discovered a fantastic way to access super fast internet for an incredibly low price using an older model router that still is amazing!
    For setting up the MOFI 4500 see a great tutorial by Sele Training
    • MoFi 4500 Setup
    Make sure you purchase the SIM 4 model as opposed to SIM 7
    See the comparison here:
    • MoFi 4500 SIM4 vs SIM7...
    For those who asked I create an amazon wish list here it is: copy and paste
    www.amazon.com....
    For those who want to contact me:

    Some have requested to make donations to my off grid living project. Many thanks.

    Thanks for watching!

    Many reviewers get something and do a quick review without giving the product much opportunity to "prove" itself, much of the time just showing unboxing their new gizmo. Yours is a real review, explaining your actual experience with the product. I have internet in an urban area, but appreciate your review (and all your videos btw)

    When using a shared internet, i.e. WiFi you should always use a VPN so your traffic is protected. BTW, I bought the Mofi 9191 which is their high-end model. The SIM4 version of the 4500 doesn't support TMOs band 71 which is the most important TMO band. It is also missing AT&T band 14. I know it costs a lot more, but the 5G Mofi is where things are going and they have all the bands for all the carriers.

    Howdy Don, I looked at the video you link to and the fellow over there has a pinned comment saying he no longer recommends the Mofi 4500. He's peddling something called the Insty Connect. I don't know why but I'm guessing he's getting affiliate revenue from promoting it. What really matters is that it's working for you. I hope it works for me because I can't see myself going off grid and still spending over a hundred bucks a month for internet. You know what gets me is how some "purists" like to say that if you have internet, you're not really off grid. I think it's hilarious.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  2 роки тому +4

      Hi Caswell. Yes I not only looked into but emailed the Insty Connect inventor to learn more about his product. What I learned was this. If you are in a super remote area it does indeed work better than the MOFI. But I don't have the several 100 dollars for it. Plus most importantly the MOFI does an excellent job here so I simply don't need the insty! As for folks that say if you have internet you are not really off grid I simply say this. Whatever works for your dreams and what you decide then I am going to cheer you on. Thats the beauty of living in a free country with your own path to follow. For me keeping in touch with others as a single person is important and of course now that youtube has become such a fun avenue to access there is that one too! Thanks for watching!

    I was hoping you had a true "frugal" setup for your streaming.. I use the Visible phone as a hotspot for 25 a month with UNLIMITED everything.. I have used over 150GB in one month and never a hiccup.. It connects wirelessly and easily to my computer for internet access.. The only drawback is it is only good on one device at a time.. But 200+ plus an additional 20 a month is a no go for me.. My current Visible phone is 4G but they have 5G available for the same 25 a month.. (with phones as low as 19 bucks).. Unfortunately I am too far out to get 5G service.. I can watch most youtube vids in HD with no problem.. To think I used to pay 160 a month,, for 56K dial up.. lol

      HI Robert. I definitely looked at the visible hotspot but got turned away by folks saying there was throttling and slow signal causing buffering. That said it sounds like your experience is excellent and different than I read about. Indeed $25.00 per month is great if that includes all of your talk and text and everything. Way to go!

    • @deserthorizons
      @deserthorizons 2 роки тому +3

      @@affordabledesertliving3487 according to visible they don't do "throttling".. If it gets congested it gets congested for everyone on that tower.. I occasionally get the buffering and when I do I dumb down the resolution on the video to make it smooth.. Yup,, truly unlimited talk,, text and data and it uses the Verizon network so it works almost everywhere..

      @@deserthorizons most cell providers give priority to their business phone customers first, then their consumer customers, and finally to their MNVO customers, i.e. Visible, Mint, etc. Using a phone SIM will help insure full speed when tablet and hot spot SIMS are de-prioritized. The exception is the new band 14 from AT&T dedicated to first responders who get the fastest priority.

      Mak I have heard others have that issue. I think because I am not using a tethering/hotspot situation the MOFI flies under the radar. The mofi is a stand alone router that acts like a tablet. AT&T sees me as someone who uses his tablet to surf the web and stream data. In reality I can but rarely do use the tablet as 99% of the time I am using the MOFI.

      I simply called this number: 1-800-288-2020. Make sure you ask for their unlimited $20.00 a month tablet plan. As of just a couple of months ago I verified by calling that its still available. The caveat though is they will ask you for your tablets IEMI number as I mention in the video. Once they have that they will send you the sim in the mail which you shove into the MOFI router. Obviously for smart phone use outside of the range of the router you will need an additional plan. I use a $20.00 a month plan from USmobile. So total for everything for me is just over $40.00 per month for unlimited data with the MOFI.

    I'm confused.
    You said it cost 20 dollars for a t and t, then you say you spend 40 dollars a month....
    We are talking internet here so what does unlimited talk and messaging have to do with anything? Talk and messaging doesn't let me use internet...
    You say you get a little bit of data? How much data? Can you clarify some of this? What is the name of the 20 dollar plan? How much data does it have?
    Thanks

      Free American Spirit. Remember the fast router uses a separate AT&T sim. That is $20.00 per month. To give a complete picture to folks of what it costs to serve my needs for cell phone use as well I included the $20.00 price for USmobile for that. Check in with USmobile. They have tons of plans and that is where I get unlimited talk and text and some data. Can't remember how much. I use that data when on the road for surfing the web etc. But I dont use it much as I am covered with my fast router at home.

      Hi Oscar. If you have a smart TV that can mirror your computer then yes. The MOFI router simply connects directly into your PC/laptop etc. Once you are watching a netflix movie on your computer then your smart TV should allow you to watch it. I am far from I.T. savvy but I hope this helps.

    You don't mention that AT&T will "deprioritize" your data when the tower gets congested. Things will slow down drastically depending on how many people are are using their devices at the same time. For me it's between 5 and 10PM when the kiddies are wiggling their asses on tiktok and reporting their latest bowel movement on instagram.

      Great point R.Johnson. I guess the beauty of living in a relatively unpopulated area? All I can tell you is that I dont get any slowdowns! Simple as that. Oh and if I did? I can go into the MOFI software and change bands and search for one that is fast. This system working here in my area is just not like the normal way of doing towers and internet. I can't say enough good things about it.
