Great guide! Definitely will follow this once I have everything necessary to do it. You made everything clear to understand. The only intimidating thing for me is finding the ROMs because I'll be starting from complete scratch. I don't have a previous backlog of games. So finding a safe place to get them will be intimidating for me, and finding complete libraries for each console. And I completely understand why you can't direct people to ROMs, for legal liability. It'd be nice if you had a discord server setup so people can work together in private to get correct safe information out on it. Maybe it's simpler than I'm thinking and I'm psyching myself out. Idk. Lol. Besides that, all I need is that cozy nostalgic background photo you had! Thanks for the thorough guide!
Definitely DONT Google "Tiny best set roms go" and look at a link on internet archive that pops up. I wouldn't do that. It would be nuts if it were a nice set of curated rom packs for these systems that also have additional links for expanded collections based on 64gb, 128 gb, 512gb cards etc. Definitely DONT download the Tiny Best Set Go collection that is around 6gb( that might have tons of great games for systems like the gba, snes, genesis etc)first to see if you like it. Don't you do it.
You’re on your own, there’s no _archive_ that’s ORGanized for what you’re looking for. These retro handheld tutorials assume you already know so they have _no intro_ that explains cartridge-based systems. And for CDs, even if you tried to dump your own, it sometimes doesn’t work right and you have to _redump_ them.
Tech dweeb coming in clutch as always, I've been enjoying my Miyoo Mini+ but I have been considering purchasing something slightly larger and stronger for a while, aiming for GameCube level emulation. This'll undoubtedly be useful once I pick one out.

After watching this video and setting Dig up on my RP3+, I'm really starting to like this front end for it's simplicity. Great video Dweeb keep up the good work. (PS. Yay, this device has been sitting on my desk because I'm unfamiliar with android. I set up a gamecube game, it worked ok but it wasn't why I bought the device.
Wow, you are really moving out that face reveal :p By that time you will be more machine than man so I guess it wouldn't really matter. Thanks for the set-up guide! I might try using something similar when I get my Odin2. Sure, set-up videos are not the most amusing, but I actually enjoy seeing how others are setting up their devices and what tools they have expertise with. It gives me a more rounded toolset as well as a another tool/setting to try when I inevitably mess up something on my next project.
another video that is exactly what i need. bought a retroid pocket 3+ last year and just havent gotten into it yet, the first few times i tried using it i just didnt know what to do with it. managed to get some "cores" downloaded, but it just all seems way too clunky. every time i load anything i get messages poping up like "controller not something something, resorting to alternate settings", and things like the start/select button dont work, then i was trying to get mame games go work, started trying to configure settings and accidentally changed an input i didnt mean to but then i could find anything to reset the settings to default, so i just deleted the core entirely and downloaded another one... In the end it just got left to gather dust until the other day i put some android games on it, crypt of the necro dancer, world of goo, the room games, monument valley,.... so i've been enjoying using it for necrodancer, but the whole roms side of it just feels way too messy. even the retroid launcher is awkward the way it loads up and then you have to the little roms/emulators button at the bottom. rather than booting into a nice interface where everything is nicely presented. anyway, will get around to watching this when i get the time.
Yeah those retroarch notifications are pretty useless. You can disable those through the retroarch settings (under notifications). If your controller doesn't work you can set that up yourself through the settings too, go to 'input' and then 'port 1 controls' and then 'set all controls'. You'll go through the setup process, and it should work after that (make sure you 'save core override" when you're done changing anything!). Happy to help if you get stuck, feel free to stop by my discord server and ask any questions you have :)
I despise Android as a gaming device but your wonderful video makes things a little more tolerable. I prefer Linux though. EmuDeck and Batocera are fantastic as they usually have the aspect ratios and all that set up for you automagically. Scraping for box art seems to take FOREVER with Android. I use the Screen Scraper program on my PC and simply have it scan my SD card that's inserted and it saves the media right there on it. Using the PC is a heck of a lot quicker than scanning for box art using the device itself. I can get about 1,000 games scanned for box art and preview videos done in about 15 minutes.
Ahhhh sweet! Thanks for this video TechDweeb 😁 I bought 2 RP2S's a couple of weeks ago - thanks to your recommendation! I was just wondering about how to set them up hehe. For now still waiting for them to arrive though (very slow shipping from Retroid I must say). Maybe we're all just spoiled by Amazon nowadays lol
I just received my Odin 2 max. I usually don’t use front ends. But I’m gonna attempt to be cool as you by setting up dig. I just hope dig can give me Japanese cover arts since all my games are Japanese. Yes I can speak read and write fluently in Japanese. That’s gotta be at least 1 cool point 😂
Dig works great on the Odin 2! If you don't get the right box art, you can manually change any box you want by holding your finger on the box art and selecting "box cover" and you can find whatever cover you want on the browser that pops up (I often do that if I want a box that it didn't choose). Speaking Japanese and having Japanese box art is worth way more than 1 cool point. 3 at the very least.
Thank you a million times! Maybe now I can finally finish setting up my old nvidia shield emulation. Love your editing style❤. Is there any way I can request a tutorial on your edits?
Hope it helps you out! A 'how I make videos' series in the works. Just need to clear my plate with a few of these product reviews and then I'll get onto that content. Sit tight!
Truly appreciate this! I hope you do more of these for different devices but this is the one I’m going to buy because I just wanna play up to ps1 really and mostly mame.
My Odin 2 Max came in on Monday of this week. I was able to get everything setup except PS Vita which I will do next. Really surprised how well Switch emulation performs using Yuzu with NCE.
Nice! My favourite stuff to play on this is the higher end retro systems like PS1, Saturn, Dreamcast, and N64. I don't care about gamecube or PS2 for the most part, those games play better on a TV IMO, but the early 3d stuff is simpler looking and plays great on smaller screens like this, and the RP2s can handle all those without issue.
There is a switch theme for Dig. I like the features of dig like being able to browse the games list by screenshots and carousel game box view. But hey, that's the best part of handhelds like this, we can customize the experience the way we like!
@@TechDweeb really? I had no idea it had a switch theme. I feel like I would probably screw up how to set it up though cause I tried Daijisho and couldn't get it to work. 😅

Hello Tech, thanks for the guide on the video, it was helpful on how to get things running. I had a question tho. I have a S22 Ultra and I want to have a front end that I can jump into when I want to play games, but not have the sorta tablet orientation home screen. I still want to use my phone like regular. Do you have anyway I can go go about this? Thanks for the video!
Hard to say. It's an impressive scraper but sometimes it doesn't get it right. It's VERY easy to swap the box art yourself though, just hold your finger on the box art and select 'box art' and then select google images and you'll be taken to google and you can just choose whichever box art you want. Hold your finger on an image, select 'download image', wait for it to download, and then use the A button to go back to dig. It only takes a few seconds and it's painless.
I like Dig, but when I use it, my hotkeys don't work. It seems to fall back on some other type of Retroarch Configuration settings. I thought it was something I did wrong on my End but the other 2 frontends I use Daijisho and Reset Collection work with my Retroarch Hotkeys but not dig, I tried to save the config on dig and lost big so right now I can't pull the trig on this frontend rig
That'll be an issue with the retroarch folder you selected in Dig. Make sure you are selecting the retroarch folder in the root level of your device storage.
I'm attempting to use that frontend now, there's a lot of work you have to put into it, (you have to scrape yourself and setup metadata" but people say it's worth it in the end.@@TechDweeb
can you do 2 players on these handhelds? maybe a usb hub ?? bluetooth controller with the uniit connected to a tv? can you do a vid on that... is there a limit to how many players?
So can dig launch games in different emulators besides RetroArch? Because Each of the systems I have, has its own emulator and it would be a problem if I couldn't launch a specific system from dig.. and also dig doesn't scan my roms so easily like that, it won't scan no where near all the roms and it will duplicate roms.. and I have all roms organized in a ROMS folder and each system organized within.. is there a way to get it to properly scan?
Video is really useful but man, this thing is a pain. I've downloaded every possible core, set the retroarch 64, still have to pick a bunch of different cores to find one that works. Then, the save state, FF, ETC functions that I set up, still don't work. I'm going to have to spend a day messing with this. I completely wish I would have bought something that already had the emulators already installed so I could just load games and go. This is not fun.
Aw sorry to hear you're having troubles. If it's any help, you CAN get it working 100% perfectly, and once you do it's amazing. You won't have to deal with the problems endlessly. Plus tinkering is how you learn!
I’ve been thinking about buying one of these for a while now as I have a rg35xx and I want an upgrade. I don’t want to mess around with it much and I just want to play it straight out of the box however I would quite like to add dig. Does it come with any game roms or do you have to download them? Please help tech dweeb!
VERY new to this scene and been having issues as one would expect, but for some reason I get duplicates of games. This most recent time, following your instruction, I had less but still have a lot of dupes even though there are no duplicate ROMs in the folder. Any idea what I might be doing wrong or what might be happening that I can fix? Also, they aren’t multi-disc games that this is happening to so I know it’s not RE2 disc 1 and 2. It’s like Crash Bandicoot and it’s theee twice.
Do the games have Bin and Cue files? If so you'll need to combine them into single PBP files using a program like PSXPackager. I keep meaning to do a tutorial on that...
@@TechDweeb Yea, they are a single file (chd if I remember right), but the duplication happens in all systems but it’s not every game within it. I just checked SNES and games like Chuck Rock and Chrono Trigger were duplicated. It feels very random. Also, there’s many dupes in PS in dig, but then when I play it duckstation opens (but not the game) and all the games are not duped. I used a previous “set-up” video that used the Retroid and RetroArch and RA had dupes as well as a hidden file version that obviously did nothing. So I had a list of 600+ games that did nothing, then duplicates as well. Needless to say it’s a bit of a pain to traverse a list that big. This video has left me with the best version and I can deal with dupes a LOT easier than an enormous list of hidden files before I get to the actual playable games on my list, so thanks so much for that and any further advice.
What's the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit retroarch? Why offer two different versions? Also, how will I know if I need Bios? Will it ask me for one? I also can't seem to as of yet figure out how to manage Windows, unzip files, or locate my SD card and nothing but NES works for some reason. DIG keeps telling me I need to download selected core for SNES even though it shows as downloaded and I have 32 bit selected. This is pretty confusing!
Alittle to fast for this old guy noob to retro gaming hotkeyinf too fast and now after watching this and following step by step I missed sow Thing cause the control do t work anymore got to start over. Don’t k ow how this is hard to setup what a beast
Hey TechDweeb, I'm trying to run my Sega Genesis games on the 2S but I don't know how to get the games from my SD card to MD.emu? Can you please help. Thank you!
@@TechDweebyou replied. Now I feel COOL!! Anyway, just got one based on your favourite go-to device. It also fit my preference since I'm playing mostly retro games & lite android gaming. Thanks dweeb.
The best cores are there, better performance in the highest end stuff like shaders, and that's where we get advanced cores like the widescreen SNES & Genesis cores. Also fewer cores in the 64-bit version, so less decision fatigue.
So, if I turn off the device completely and turn it on again, will it load the Dig frontend directly, or will I have to load it manually from within the Android OS?

@@TechDweeb Your video featured Dig but it's my first time having heard of it lol. I'm sorta new to emulation.
@TechDweeb will the box art scraper on dig work with rom names like, Zelda (usa) (en,fr,etc).gba or should I clean up the names?
Note: Dig doesn't work on all Android handhelds. My case in point: Pimax Portal (Dig crashes to desktop after launching).
I was using dig before but I change to arc browser because android 11 limitations and took so long for them to support it
I didn't know about arc browser. I'll check it out!
I'm attempting to use that frontend now, there's a lot of work you have to put into it, (you have to scrape yourself and setup metadata" but people say it's worth it in the end.@@TechDweeb
Would this help with my 505? Just got Gamma OS for a friend
Yup! This is how I set up ALL my android devices!
I wish 8bitdo would make a xbox 360 controller bluetooth board that would be cool
My man: the R1 on your diagram should probably say: Save state. Instead you have two load states 👍🏼
Hey 😁 Dweeb
Would this be pretty much the same process on the Odin 2?
Yup!
@@TechDweeb lovely. Thank you.
I would love to see how to lock it all down.. so kid mode extreme.
Much harder to do in android than linux. Probably the best bet is go with Lemuroid instead of Dig/Retroarch.
Interesting 🤔😊
Question what emulator do you use for Saturn?
Yaba Sanshiro
I like helpful TechDweeb as much as flashy, fun TechDweeb. Good video!
Help!!!! everytime i try to load up a gameboy advanced game on retroarch, i get black screened and it says "retroarch not responding"
can you do 2 players on these handhelds? maybe a usb hub ?? bluetooth controller with the uniit connected to a tv? can you do a vid on that... is there a limit to how many players?
How do you unassign a hotkey?
I’ve been thinking about buying one of these for a while now as I have a rg35xx and I want an upgrade. I don’t want to mess around with it much and I just want to play it straight out of the box however I would quite like to add dig. Does it come with any game roms or do you have to download them? Please help tech dweeb!
This one doesn't come with games. Gotta download everything yourself and set it up yourself on this one.
@@TechDweeb do you recommend any other consoles. I was thinking about getting the trimui pro
Dang I was gonna ask u where to find roms!! 😅😭.. can u tell me where to find “rims” 😉.. use secret talk 🤫
guggle.com
Would this work with this new retroid pocket mini
Interesting but Daijishõ all the way :P
What's the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit retroarch? Why offer two different versions?
Also, how will I know if I need Bios? Will it ask me for one?
I also can't seem to as of yet figure out how to manage Windows, unzip files, or locate my SD card and nothing but NES works for some reason. DIG keeps telling me I need to download selected core for SNES even though it shows as downloaded and I have 32 bit selected. This is pretty confusing!
Don’t you think it’s weird that this time you got a “cable“ in the box with your handheld?
Yeah. Usually I get a cord...
is it possible to install android games on sd card as well?
How do i fully resest it
Trying to get the pokemon games onto my sd card and I can’t get them anywhere
Alittle to fast for this old guy noob to retro gaming hotkeyinf too fast and now after watching this and following step by step I missed sow
Thing cause the control do t work anymore got to start over. Don’t k ow how this is hard to setup what a beast
Hey TechDweeb, I'm trying to run my Sega Genesis games on the 2S but I don't know how to get the games from my SD card to MD.emu? Can you please help. Thank you!
Does this method work for RG353V?
Yup! On the android side obviously, but yeah, it works on basically any android device.
@@TechDweebyou replied. Now I feel COOL!! Anyway, just got one based on your favourite go-to device. It also fit my preference since I'm playing mostly retro games & lite android gaming. Thanks dweeb.
Why does the Y button bring up some little side menu in game, and not work right?
Check your key mapping
do I need to add BIOS files?
Can you make it so it boots in dig?
I just wanted to be a bit cooler but got frostbite on my toes.
Lucky not my button thumbs!
Dont even play on Android.
Oops. You got TOO cool!
I legit can't watch this content with the preschool blues clues striped sleeves and plugged nose vibes.
Then don't
Should I get RP2S for 100$ or are there better handhelds for the price?
Its pretty much the most powerful device you can get at that price rn
is it easy enough to using MacBook?
Why the 64 bit retroarch?
The best cores are there, better performance in the highest end stuff like shaders, and that's where we get advanced cores like the widescreen SNES & Genesis cores. Also fewer cores in the 64-bit version, so less decision fatigue.
im just getting a black screen and retroarch crashes. anyone good with this that can help?
So, if I turn off the device completely and turn it on again, will it load the Dig frontend directly, or will I have to load it manually from within the Android OS?
You can set it to auto launch dig
@@that86fiero Cool, that's what I want. Thanks!
But how are you so cool?!
Ok so is retro arch just for arcade games
