Scotty Kilmer hello, I have a 1999 honda passport, I did not put my timming belt back correctly after I installed a new water pump, now engine won't turn over, I understand that I most likely bent some valves , but is there any possibility of an easier fix??? thx john
Scotty Kilmer I have a 2004 CRV and it overheats when stopped for a bit in traffic but once I start moving it cools back down. This only seems to happen when it's hot out. The air blows cold from the AC. It also cools down if I crank the heat up when it starts to overheat. Any help would be appreciated
*"So the next time your car starts overheating, Dont get mad. Get under the hood and fix it"* I absolutely love that. I would never give up on my machine. Even if it did overheat. Everything is fixable.
@@laragreene8328 No.. But i have a hole in my radiator but car temeprature is the same, with it or with new radiator. So why leaks dont verheat an engine the guy said it overheated--
This guy is great. I have had mechanics that get emotionally tied up and say "your car is a mess just buy a new one". To me a good mechanic looks at this pragmatically and thinks how can I fix this even if it's expensive. I'll make the decision if I want to spend time and money on my car. Most people don't have the know-how or desire to learn about how engines run so a mechanics' word is as a good as a witch doctors. The best mechanics imo have good attitudes and understand that if you have the tools, know-how, and time you can fix anything. I've had mechanics tell me my car wouldn't last a few weeks and the car ended up lasting years. I admire guys like this host, that are creative and have a can do attitude. Mechanics that scare too easy I don't have time for.
On the other hand if the person who is most likely to benefit from doing a ton of work on your car tells you it’s not worth it, it may actually not be worth it. Just saying. They have a financial incentive to do expensive work so when they tell you it’s not worth it - they might just be looking out for you.
Thank you scotty. My father never gave me advice on how to care or work on a car. You have a gift on explaining things so easily for anyone to understand.
Well, he totally skips the water pump before happily suggesting head gasket failure as if it was a walk in the park... but that's me... objectively though it would write off most oldish, common cars... a water pump could save the day.
What I love about Scotty is he gives you the easy on your wallet run down of problems first, it's exact opposite of what most mechanics do which involves taking most of your money . Rev up your engines Scotty, God bless you!
Hey Scotty!!! Thanks for the info. I appreciate how u cover all the possible issues and give a quick, informative and, most of all, understandable solution for each diagnosis. The editing is perfect. Keep em coming bro, Ur helping a lot of people.
With gummed up radiators, sometimes you can use some radiator flush additive to clean it up and bit. It's not as good of a fix as replacing the radiator, but it's a heck of a lot quicker, easier, and cheaper. It may even keep you going for a couple more years before actually having to replace it.
the "rev up your engines" part in the beginning of the video, is just an intro. it's not an instruction on how to fix a car that overheats. it's time to get a new car now
MarzNet256, if you noticed, he mentions that in the video when he says when the pressure moves down, you know there's a leak and you need to find where the squirt is coming from. that doesn't mention a water pump directly, but it mentions all leak possibilities generally. that way the video doesn't go for too long
I think this guy is just about the best mechanic on youtube when it comes to jumping straight to what people who dont know about cars can can understand in the simplest way possible.... he tells u all the thing to check when your facing a problem in any system of the car... your Lit 💥💯
There's one thing I was thinking of, a warren out water pump could also cause overheating, because I experienced that several years ago. Thanks for the great video, very helpful.
This guy is awesome!!!! He should have a TV show! Very good information and very fun to watch. I find myself just watching his videos for fun :) Keep it up boss....!
At 2:35 you are suggesting to pull a wire from the positive side from the battery towards the fan to 'jumpstart' it. You should tell that on some fans the required power will burn such a thing wire instantly. So be carefull when you jumpstart that thing lol, that small wire will smoke within a second. Some fans require a 15A or even higher current in order to run.
Agreed, i might not have thought of this because i have no knowledge of electricity. Doesnt hurt to spread knowledge when you feel like someones safety could be at stake.
+Brandon Palmer I agree. Most videos I've seen has people talking about unnecessary stuff. This video basically list everything you need to look at in a straightforward manner.
I learned so much in just one video. Currently trying to figure out why my 07 G35 coupe started heating up randomly on a quick trip to the store. Ill be doing all of these tests tomorrow. I checked the coolant and it was watery, my guess is that the previous owner was running it with water instead of coolant/antifreeze and little by little it started messing up. We'll see what happens.
I remember two years ago that I had a leaking radiator in my Chevy S10. The funny thing about it was that the coolant was circulating, but the leak was allowing coolant to escape. I went and bought a new radiator and it only cost me a little more than $100. All I had to do was remove the air intake, remove the fan shroud, disconnect the coolant hoses and out it came. I put in the new radiator and the truck ran great afterward. The best thing was that I no longer had to keep adding more coolant every once in a while. But, it didn't end there. The following summer, I had taken a beach trip. When I got there, I noticed my coolant was boiling in the reservoir. I thought nothing of it since my engine wasn't overheating. It wasn't until a couple days later that I realized the radiator cap had gone bad. It wasn't allowing the coolant system to pressurize and allow the coolant to circulate. I replaced the radiator cap and no more boiling coolant. Everything was normal after that. I love it when engine problems are very easy to fix.
Also make sure the fans are wired correctly if they're electric and not belt-driven. In my old Firebird I replaced a blown radiator with a nice aluminum one yet I was still overheating. Turns out my buddy who reconnected the fans did it backwards so it was sucking the cold air from the radiator instead of feeding it
Hi my name is Taurus and I am trying to find out what's wrong with my 2001 Buick lesabre. Well I got the transmission replaced and every since then my car hasn't been holding in the antifreeze and then it just ran hot and my belt pop off
You forgot water pump.. my water pump is slowly leaking right now.. lol.. it overheats when the fluid drops too low.. right now all I have to do is add about 6 oz of water/antifreeze every morning.. but I know I need to change it asap..
David Danh in the video, he mentioned that if there was a leak, you'll need to find where the squirt is coming from. that covers everything about the system that could be leaking, including the water pump
Ya but if the water pump is not pushing coolant that could be the problom might not be leaking but the fins on the pump are worn it won't leak and won't move the coolant
I just bought a pt cruiser 'as is' haven't had it for a month and it overheated yesterday. Hopefully my nephew can figure it out for me. I like how this gentleman explains things.
Scotty, you forgot to mention to buy a thermostat that is designed to fail in the open position to prevent damage. whenever I buy a replacement thermostat, I always spend the extra money on one.
Top of the radiator where the radiator cap goes. Same hole you put coolant in. If there's engine gasses/fumes going into the radiator due to a bad head gasket, they will make their way into the coolant, through the radiator, up to the coolant fill hole, and mix with the blue fluid.
I have a 2001 Kia Sportage 4 cylinder that is over heating when I'm in heavy traffic or idle for more than a minute and I just noticed it's leaking HOT antifreeze onto my passenger side carpet even more when I have my air conditioner on so yesterday evening when I noticed it was leaking inside the passenger side carpet I turned the AC off and it stopped leaking as much but it is still has a slow leak and Idk what is causing it? I was thinking maybe the AC drain was plugged but what would that have to do with my vehicle over heating? Since I noticed both of the symptoms around the same time I seem to want to think they are both connected. Are they? Or do you think I have 2 separate problems going on with my truck at the same time? I really enjoy watching your videos on UA-cam along with my husband (he is a self taught diy mechanic that tries to fix everything that goes wrong with our vehicles and until now he has done a pretty good job doing it) but we always look up the symptoms the vehicles has and try to figure out the problem ('s) before he starts taking things apart on our vehicles and when we "Google" a problem with a car 9 times outta 10 one of your very helpful videos pop up and for that we want to say THANK YOU for taking the time to make your videos to help us out!!!!!
Yep if you're getting engine coolant into the interior of the car, it's probably a leaking heater core which can make the car overheat as it can't build up pressure in the cooling system to work effectively as the leak vents off the pressure. Also a leak will cause the coolant to level to drop and cause overheating.
Thank you Scotty Kilmer for taking the time to answer me!, And xpatriarch II and Believe231 I think you two guy's pretty much hit the nail on the head because that is what my husband seems to think it is as well....I hope yall are right...my husband already started to take my truck apart to retrieve the heater core and replace it even though he says it is a SOB to get to on my vehicle...he says it's gonna pretty much take the whole dang weekend to get to it and replace it and put my truck back together again. So I am praying to God that is what is wrong with my vehicle and there isn't anything else wrong with my truck...Hopefully it will stop over-heating once he replaces it and I won't have any more problems at least for now!
You could also bypass the heater core by connecting the feed and return lines that go through the firewall together. That will stop the coolant leak but you would also lose cabin heat. It does make sense if you live in a warmer part of the country.
Thanks Scotty! my 2004 honda crv overheats when I'm in stop and go traffic, when Im travelling the freeway its just fine. I will use this video to diagnose it. Very helpful!
This is weird, just recently replaced the radiator in my car, but when the car is idle for about 10 min the temp gauge will make its way to a little over half, observing under the hood, the fans did kick in but then i kinda smelled the anti freeze, i turned the car off, didn't notice any leaks i then opened where ur suppose to refill the car with anti freeze and it i can see anti freeze start to shoot right into the container and want to burst out the lid so i closed it quickly ... any idea about what could be happening here? car is a 2012 dodge charger if that helps.
My car overheats when running on Sunny or rainy conditions and I don't know what to do. It is a really old car, even older than me. I'm 18 and the car is already over 20 year's old and I just started experiencing overheating problems last year. My car is Lancer GLXi 1.6 Mitsubishi
do the tests in this video to find the fault. It could be electronic problems, cause normally cars run cooler in the rain cause rain water is cold and hits the radiator. But heat and water will ruin electronics
In my case the fans were replaced it wasn't the thermostat and the radiator wasn't corroded. turns out it was a sensor on the radiator that tells the fans to come on when the coolant reaches a certain heat temp. swap the sensor out and now my car runs great again Thanks Scott best mechanic on UA-cam 👍
hey scotty. have an 03 mustang v6 its a dailydrive and it had a blown head gasket... recently fixed it. but kept overheathing so i changed the thermostat then i changed the water pump and still overheated so i changed the radiator and the radiator cap and it worked just fine for a month but then i noticed it tryed to overheat again... specially when i turn the ac on... or go hard on the gas pedal for a while... i also noticed that the coolant on the radiator decreased
I have a 95 mustang gt that had overheating problems for a month. I changed everything I could (cheap to expensive) associated with it; upper and lower radiator hoses, radiator cap, thermostat, and the ccrm. The problem was my fan wasn't starting when it needed to cool down the engine so I was gonna try my luck replacing the fan after all these. Then I kept reading the manual and found a sensor (Cooling Temperature Sensor). From my guess I think it sends a signal to the fan to turn on when it gets to hot. Replaced it, fan came on, haven't had a problem since. Don't know if you've already fixed your problem, but if you haven't maybe give this a try? Hope this helps in any way.
of course pressure test it for leaks, and pray it's not the head gasket being poorly replaced, do my video "how to tell if your head gasket is blown' to find out for sure
overheating is the most common problem i have heard about. i have Honda Accord 2008 2.4 and i am suffering from this problem for two years tell all the engine destroyed i did not change the engine for my car for one month because know i have phobia and 😱 fear from overheating again also i start feeling bad about honda accord 🤒
On and on again, scotty reminds me that it is worth buying equipment that can cost about $100 because in the long run, I can fix it myself and I dont have to waste triple of ten times more than that. Would highly suggest buying a car jack that can lift the same amount as ur vehicle. Had a small jack because I cheaped out. The jack is useful for tire changes but not for jacking the car to get underneath. I am definitely going to buy the temperature gauge and coolant tester.
I have replaced my radiator, checked for leaks, and changed the thermostat but my car says it overheating, however I've had two mechanic family members look at it and they said the engine isn't over heating? they say it isn't hot enough to overheat? however they both cannot figure out what is wrong. I'm sure they checked the head casket as well. before one of them took out the thermostat and that seemed to work but I had no heat, however winter is coming up and so we put back a new thermostat and we are back to the same overheating situation. just wondering what u guys think?
I need your help Scotty I have a 2005 nissan altima that keeps running hot on me just bought a week ago. Someone suggested that I look at the thermostat so I removed the cover on the upper thermostat and it was backwards and worn down so I changed it. The lower one was missing so I bought that one and then I flushed the radiator and added a gallon of antifreeze and it still ran hot so I changed the water pump and I changed the hose clamps to ensure myself it wasn't that. It is still running hot unless I run the heater any suggestions of what to do next besides the timing belt. The guy I bought it from just changed the heads and cam before I bought it
+David Lewis often just a worn out radiator does they, they get old, corrode, and don't dissipate heat. PRAY he didn't mess up the engine job and that's causing it
Hey everyone,My car does this thing where after driving on the highway (65 mph, 50-80mi total) once I get back on the street it'll overheat, especially if I go slow or stop. If I go 35mph or so, the heater will blow hot, and the gauge will go back down. If I go slow or stop, the heater blows cold and the gauge goes up again. The 2 fans were blowing when I pulled over. The coolant reservoir is full, and I did my best to remove air from the system a few days ago. Any ideas what it could be?Thanks.
Tracy Stines That was my problem in my 200 jetta. Luckily the dealership replaced it for free since it happened the day after I bought it. Very expensive to replace.
My 2000 monte carlo try to crank but doesn't. I just hear a loud cluck from the starter. It was driving fine Last week now it doesn't start at all. I've replaced the starter and the battery. My security light,my battery light, and my low oil pressure light all come on, but I just had a oil change 2 weeks ago.I was told that my engine is locking up Witch means the end of my life as I know it can anyone please help me I put too much into this car for it to end like this.
GX470 overheating.;replaced leaking thermostat and radiator 3 months ago. Replace the radiator cap with new one too. As it turns out, the radiator cap is faulty. Thanks Scotty!!!

David Danh in the video, he mentioned that if there was a leak, you'll need to find where the squirt is coming from. that covers everything about the system that could be leaking, including the water pump
David Danh have you fixed the problem
Ya but if the water pump is not pushing coolant that could be the problom might not be leaking but the fins on the pump are worn it won't leak and won't move the coolant
PS,,, I love Scotty's ( "don't buy a Jaguar") video. That is a classic video.
I'm watching 👀
Congratulations, youve just saved a life from malaysia 🇲🇾 👍🏽
Fixed it? Congrats. I ended up flushing my coolant, new thermostat, new radiator cap and car runs perfectly
Scotty Kilmer - my favorite new channel! I like your style a LOT!
Great videos! I've learned so much about cars thanks to you. Thank you so much Scotty!
Ur the legend of engineering!!! I dont know why people like u born anymore 😓
Bad water pump, you will see water leaking from under car and if this is the cause, well, timing belt removal to get to waterpump, BIG Job.
been watching this dude's videos for years keep seeing him when I'm looking up stuff this guy knows what he's talking about subscribe!!!!!!
you forgot the water pump thats what it was on my truck but this help me find what it was thankyou
This guy is so enternaining, just have to watch these :D
If only Scotty could help me fix my wife like he helps me fix my car
Very funny..But I just forwarded the post your wife...
I just bought a pt cruiser 'as is' haven't had it for a month and it overheated yesterday. Hopefully my nephew can figure it out for me. I like how this gentleman explains things.
Forgot 1 other problem
Water pump
I know vw's has plastic fins inside that will eventually break
+Steven Wilkins My thought exactly
Steven Wilkins that was only mk4, vw then changed to metal fins even oem. my mk3 is at 217k and still on original water pump
No he didn’t forget lmao he pressure tested the system if the water pump was bad it would leak through the weep hole
Same with Chrysler products they have plastic impalers on the water pump
Joe Kim I’ve never had a electric water pump on anything I’ve had try to I try to stay away for all that lol
Scotty, you forgot to mention to buy a thermostat that is designed to fail in the open position to prevent damage. whenever I buy a replacement thermostat, I always spend the extra money on one.
What's a good thermostat brand? Or should I go oem
where did you put the blue liquid? you never showed or told us, please advise
Top of the radiator where the radiator cap goes. Same hole you put coolant in.
If there's engine gasses/fumes going into the radiator due to a bad head gasket, they will make their way into the coolant, through the radiator, up to the coolant fill hole, and mix with the blue fluid.
He is the best at explaining instead of mumbling about nothing!
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us!! Much appreciated!!🎉
Once my moms car overheated
It was a defective thermostat
One cool guy indeed. 😎
I really enjoy watching your videos on UA-cam along with my husband (he is a self taught diy mechanic that tries to fix everything that goes wrong with our vehicles and until now he has done a pretty good job doing it) but we always look up the symptoms the vehicles has and try to figure out the problem ('s) before he starts taking things apart on our vehicles and when we "Google" a problem with a car 9 times outta 10 one of your very helpful videos pop up and for that we want to say THANK YOU for taking the time to make your videos to help us out!!!!!
ac drain does not effect overheating. Do my tests in this video to find the overheating problem, it has to be one of them
your ac's heater core is connected to your engines cooling system
if it has a leak then you should have it check
This is weird, just recently replaced the radiator in my car, but when the car is idle for about 10 min the temp gauge will make its way to a little over half, observing under the hood, the fans did kick in but then i kinda smelled the anti freeze, i turned the car off, didn't notice any leaks i then opened where ur suppose to refill the car with anti freeze and it i can see anti freeze start to shoot right into the container and want to burst out the lid so i closed it quickly
... any idea about what could be happening here? car is a 2012 dodge charger if that helps.
Don't do that, you could've gotten seriously burned. Always wait for car to cool down.
U forgot the coolant housing after the thermostat 😁
My car overheats when running on Sunny or rainy conditions and I don't know what to do. It is a really old car, even older than me. I'm 18 and the car is already over 20 year's old and I just started experiencing overheating problems last year.
My car is Lancer GLXi 1.6 Mitsubishi
do the tests in this video to find the fault. It could be electronic problems, cause normally cars run cooler in the rain cause rain water is cold and hits the radiator. But heat and water will ruin electronics
I'll give it a try. Thanks
Did You fixed the problem? I'm curious.
Ambrew KS_FTW I have a similar car and just started to over heat. Did you find out your problem to the car?
In my case the fans were replaced it wasn't the thermostat and the radiator wasn't corroded. turns out it was a sensor on the radiator that tells the fans to come on when the coolant reaches a certain heat temp. swap the sensor out and now my car runs great again Thanks Scott best mechanic on UA-cam 👍
omg thanks for this video. i will look at my car tomorrow to see whats the real issue.
What about the Temperature gauge Sensor?
I would like to know also!
It can fail and cause problems, one overheating.
hey scotty. have an 03 mustang v6 its a dailydrive and it had a blown head gasket... recently fixed it. but kept overheathing so i changed the thermostat then i changed the water pump and still overheated so i changed the radiator and the radiator cap and it worked just fine for a month but then i noticed it tryed to overheat again... specially when i turn the ac on... or go hard on the gas pedal for a while... i also noticed that the coolant on the radiator decreased
similar stuff here sir!... any fix or ideas?
Hope this helps in any way.
of course pressure test it for leaks, and pray it's not the head gasket being poorly replaced, do my video "how to tell if your head gasket is blown' to find out for sure
overheating is the most common problem i have heard about. i have Honda Accord 2008 2.4 and i am suffering from this problem for two years tell all the engine destroyed
i did not change the engine for my car for one month because know i have phobia and 😱 fear from overheating again
also i start feeling bad about honda accord 🤒
radiator fan working?
On and on again, scotty reminds me that it is worth buying equipment that can cost about $100 because in the long run, I can fix it myself and I dont have to waste triple of ten times more than that.
Would highly suggest buying a car jack that can lift the same amount as ur vehicle. Had a small jack because I cheaped out. The jack is useful for tire changes but not for jacking the car to get underneath.
I am definitely going to buy the temperature gauge and coolant tester.
What about the water pump ?
I have replaced my radiator, checked for leaks, and changed the thermostat but my car says it overheating, however I've had two mechanic family members look at it and they said the engine isn't over heating? they say it isn't hot enough to overheat? however they both cannot figure out what is wrong. I'm sure they checked the head casket as well. before one of them took out the thermostat and that seemed to work but I had no heat, however winter is coming up and so we put back a new thermostat and we are back to the same overheating situation. just wondering what u guys think?
have you checked your gauge wirings?
Its your temp sensor
Check your Engine Cooling Fan Module sometimes they fail and it cause the car to overheat
Wiring or sensor: electrical false reading. Clean the electrical connections then look at the sensor
Sounds like Air in the system!!!!!
PRAY he didn't mess up the engine job and that's causing it
Could I possibly test if the radiator isn't doing its job?
Do you think it could be the timing belt?
+David Lewis check your cooling fans, maybe they are not working like they should
This is one of the most informative guys I’ve ever discovered
Waterpump ?? 😂
hey what about a bad water pump...? my car was overheating and it was the water pump...you didn't mention that on here
I did indirectly. Most water pumps leak when they go bad, and my pressure test of the system would show it leaking there
oh ok...I learn something new every day...thanks
Loren Jones Yeah he did not mention all the little individual hoses either...................................
Any ideas what it could be?Thanks.
pray it;s just an old worn out radiator that can't dissipate extra head, and NOT a blowing head gasket.
Get your radiator flushed or changed if required. On the freeway it's getting air cooled but during slow driving it's overheating.
just ust lost love scottys presentations
One of the best car videos I have ever viewed
You forgot the water pump possibility
Buy new radiator and fluid and ac service 😊
I changed thomostat and the water pump, but my car keeps over heating. what do u do next?
watch the damn video..
Sell it.
Just bought a 67 impala, previous owner mentioned the radiator was bubbling. This video will help me fix it!
what about a bad water pump???
Tracy Stines That was my problem in my 200 jetta. Luckily the dealership replaced it for free since it happened the day after I bought it. Very expensive to replace.
@@crazymonkey86056 its not if you do it yourself
My 2000 monte carlo try to crank but doesn't. I just hear a loud cluck from the starter. It was driving fine Last week now it doesn't start at all. I've replaced the starter and the battery. My security light,my battery light, and my low oil pressure light all come on, but I just had a oil change 2 weeks ago.I was told that my engine is locking up Witch means the end of my life as I know it can anyone please help me I put too much into this car for it to end like this.
CHICAGORILLA That really does sound like hell. I would probably cry. That's a big problem.
Come to find out it was the a/c compressor. It had seized up been almost 6 months with no problems..changed it myself too real easy 😆
I fixed it ..it was the ac compressor
Great job. You still have your Monte Carlo?
I worked on my own car for a while and I keep running into this guy during videos he's a cool dude and knows what
Who else is stuck lmao 💀
Stuck at the jiffy lube rn 💀
GX470 overheating.;replaced leaking thermostat and radiator 3 months ago. Replace the radiator cap with new one too. As it turns out, the radiator cap is faulty. Thanks Scotty!!!
Miss these golden days of this channel when he did repair vids. Heck 13 years ago the world was a happier place tho
Best mechanic on UA-cam till date.
People hate but I guarantee he helped you. Cause he sure helped me
You really are a great guy ! I had a gradual radiator leak which bothered me for 10 days ! Your video really helped me fix it soon before it got more expensive for me !!! Thankx
his enthusiasm is through the roof
