people try to remake this story and put it on film - and to be honest you can't blame them - it's a fantastic story - but no one will ever top this version - best advice - read the novel then see this version
"What a Heathcliff he would have been, a Richard III, Stanley Kowalski, Hotspur, Lear, or James Bond. (He came within a hair’s breadth of being cast as 007.) At his peak he was cited in the same breath as Marlon Brando and Robert Mitchum. “He made the very air move,” Orson Welles had said. But he, in Dylan Thomas’s phrase, gave his “soul a blind, slashed eye, / Gristle and rind, and a roarer’s life” and drank away his talent till there was nothing but the shadow of what once had been." -Gabriel Byrne
Oliver Reed was one of the coolest sombitches to ever walk the earth and his swashbuckling performance in these musketeer movies made me a lifelong fan.
Olly was fantastic actor. He literally marked my childhood with his excellent movies, especially with this one, Three/Four Musketeers. As I said, he was unique actor, but above all, he had unique life!!!!! Olly is the best!!!!
Mr. Schifrin beautifully captured the essence of Athos as well as Olly. The music, like the subject, is dark, moody, somber, passionate and tinged with a sad, unfulfilled longing. Excellent job on the montage, ollyreedgel.
1:51 Oh dear, I think that at some point in our lives, we must have all looked at an ex-love with the same heartache, regret, pain and disappointment that Athos did when looking at Milady .... some ex-lovers, no matter what they ever said or did, will never understand the full effects of the consequences of their behaviour on a heart that passionately loved or continues to love them.
THANK YOU, Ollyreedgel. This is masterful. And yes, all attempts at re-doing "The Three Musketeers" are utterly pointless and superfluous. Richard Lester, Olly & Co. did it PERFECTLY, 40 years ago. You can't improve on that! VIVE LE ROI!
So true! all these new movie versions of The Three Musketeeres never fail to dissapoint. There will never be another Athos like Oliver Reed - and it's funny, becouse when you read the book (in the original French, of course...), it's like it's a perfect description of Oliver Reed! From the noble gaze, right down to the drinking. Athos' first name was even Olivier! (So given in Dumas later theatre play about the youth of the musketeeres). Yes, THESE musketeeres rule.
Few days ago I found out that Frank Finlay past away in January....Famous Porthos and co star of Olly Reed in "Three Musketeers". Just Michael York and Richard Chamberlain left....
ollyreedgel You remember the scene and why he said it then, good. "Are you the headsman of LiIle?I am comte de la Fere, I have the power of low, medium and high justice".
Some confusion, the scene when she falls from her horse and he sees the brand, weren't they married? Wouldn't he have noticed her shoulder in bed?? He says something like "You killed me in the orchard that day!" when actually he had his hands round her throat. lol. Still, every frame an oil painting. Love this movie.
Watched this film when I was 7 years old back in 1994 and loved it and love it till today, made me a better person to realise the difference beetween bad and good, how to fight for womens hearts and overall. This is pure gold of cinematography !!! This was not a film, but a real testimony to France of the 17th century.
"Kill Buckingham or have him killed it's no matter to me. He's an Englishman and an enemy but you touch one hair on D'artagnan's head I'll break you on the wheel with my own hand!"
Inolvidable
Agreed. ;) Though Orlando Bloom and Logan Lerman (not sure if you know who the 2nd one is) are pretty cool. I have the disk for the 1974 four musketeers, but I haven't watched it yet. I was looking up the ratings for, and I'm not sure it this is correct but it said that it was rated R . . . . ?????

I don't know--I watched the trailer, and it doesn't look like 'R' material, more like PG-!3 . . . . whatever. My mom said she was gonna have to let me watch it because I watched the first, ha ha ha!
Faye Dunaway was at her most stunning and threatening in those movies, and Ollie completely dominated the scene when Athos confronts Milady.
One of my favorite scenes ever, an l love this score, probably because l was born in 1974.
Faye Dunaway was an absolute goddess
The best Athos, the best Milady ❤ What a pity they couldn't be together 😢
Oliver Reed was perfectly cast as Athos. He fits the character so well. "The world looks rosiest at the bottom of a glass".
The entire cast was perfect. Not one out of place. The BEST versions of the 3 Musketeers ever.

@@annedonovan9005 Absolutely - no question.
@@dlmofva51 I have a beautiful leather bound version of the book. 👍
@@annedonovan9005 How Wonderful!!
Ken Russell said that Oliver Reed was more thank an actor he was in fact a Movie Star. What a compliment
The scene in The Four musketeers where Athos recalls his past is beautifully filmed and acted..
Yes! The beautiful music and his gorgeous voice made the most precious and poetical moment in all the film.
Oh my gosh . . . . I think my real love for Athos began in that scene. With Oliver Reed. What a perfect casting.
It's my favorite segment of the whole film and it totally caught me by surprise as things went from being comedic to a fascinating piece of drama.
Fantastic filmography.
It takes a love story to cure you of love.
This video brings tears to my eyes. What a beautiful, talented man Oliver was.

Athos and Milady .... two people who loved and loathed each other in equal measure but simply could not get each other out of their system
I don't think she loved Athos. She was an opportunist. If she felt any love it was toward Rochefort....they were peas in a pod.
The best Musketeers ever made - pure class
Oliver Reed was one of the coolest sombitches to ever walk the earth and his swashbuckling performance in these musketeer movies made me a lifelong fan.
: )
i think he was handsome i miss men like him
Yes, I loved him starting from this movie too!
God yes. Me too.
He belonged in that era.
Best character in the film. Followed by Rochefort.
Olly was fantastic actor. He literally marked my childhood with his excellent movies, especially with this one, Three/Four Musketeers. As I said, he was unique actor, but above all, he had unique life!!!!! Olly is the best!!!!
Vuk Gajetic Thank you so much for your comment!!
My favourite actor of all time, suffered with the same affliction I'm beating, made him more human ❤
A great movie ,with great actors.
Reed was one of the most handsome men who ever lived , and his performance in 'the devils' was very scary
Totally agree. Those eyes get me every time.
Not “ handsome” to ME , but at that time nearly irresistable magnetism and masculinity. Dangerous and tigerish.
This is my favourite of the musketeers films. I have both these films on DVD.
Mr. Schifrin beautifully captured the essence of Athos as well as Olly. The music, like the subject, is dark, moody, somber, passionate and tinged with a sad, unfulfilled longing. Excellent job on the montage, ollyreedgel.
+Joseph Malham Well said & beautifully expressed! Thank you very much for your comment! : )
Joseph Malham unfulfilled longing...couldn’t have said it better...
I can't agree more... this is Oliver not only Athos in this music which is why i love it so much
Exquisite piece of music.

What a beautiful and poetic comment!! Thank you so much for it!! : )
ollyreedgel You are most welcome! Part of me will never get over losing my first love....
SloaneSquare ♥♥♥ : )
Well said and so true...
+SloaneSquare This is so, so, so corect. I agree totaly
Athos' understated grief.

Now just Micheal.
Hej was movie star ! RIP Oliver - Athos Reed
The most amazing beutiful music
This was in my family for generations before I gave it to her...
"If you take one more step we cross swords"

You remember the scene and why he said it then, good. "Are you the headsman of LiIle?I am comte de la Fere, I have the power of low, medium and high justice".
I recently watched the 2011 version of 'The Three Musketeers' and it was really awesome, believe me--but it can't compare to '73 & '74. ;)

That last picture . . . . :)
Un gran actor. que nunca olvidaremos. Recio, viril, apasionado. Laura.
¡¡Me encanta tu comentario!! Los fans no le olvidamos pero... ¿puede que el gran público sí lo haya hecho? : /
Esperemos que no ; )
I can relate to Athos tbh
He's my favourite character. Mostly because of Oliver Reeds portrayal.
"Have you ever seen a woman shot in the stomach?"
adambomb30 It would have taken more than that to bring her down, anyway.
👍
What a powerful scene. "By my order and for the good of the state"? His disgust and then his last loving were so powerfully conveyed.
"Kill Buckingham or have him killed it's no matter to me. He's an Englishman and an enemy but you touch one hair on D'artagnan's head I'll break you on the wheel with my own hand!"
It's almost impossible to improve the work of Richard Lester, Olly & Co. : )
Oliver Reed was so hot!
i agree with you
His eyes!!!
Esse filme eu já vir e muito bom 👍👍
Tank you..richard chamberlain!!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

Does anyone respect the music?
Didn't he get stabbed in the throat on a windmill? Reed was a supreme actor!
... da war ich Kind, ...😊
Please, you must see The four musketeers 1974 right now!! : ))
do you have some place to see the movie? i dont find in anyplace! thanks :)
Count de La fere..
I've seen too that movie but... I can't remember the second very well ; )
Rated R??? What does it means?
Can the ephemeral and perennial be as one?
Agreed. ;) Though Orlando Bloom and Logan Lerman (not sure if you know who the 2nd one is) are pretty cool.

I cringe whenever a remake or reimagining of these films is even considered.
