A complex, disturbing film. A movie way ahead of its' time, and a great masterpiece. Oliver Reed is astounding as Father Gradier and Ken Russell outdid himself as director. One of the best films ever produced.

Watched this film when I was 7 years old back in 1994 and loved it and love it till today, made me a better person to realise the difference beetween bad and good, how to fight for womens hearts and overall. This is pure gold of cinematography !!! This was not a film, but a real testimony to France of the 17th century.

Some confusion, the scene when she falls from her horse and he sees the brand, weren't they married? Wouldn't he have noticed her shoulder in bed?? He says something like "You killed me in the orchard that day!" when actually he had his hands round her throat. lol. Still, every frame an oil painting. Love this movie.
