    Important Notice About The "German Anthem" in the background music:
    Throughout the video, amongst others, the Austro-Hungarian National Anthem is playing.
    This sounds very similar to the current German Anthem.
    "Because it follows exactly the same tune. This tune was originally written in 1797 by an Austrian composer, Joseph Haydn, to provide music to go with the poe Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser (English: God Save Emperor Franz) by Lorenz Leopold Haschka.
    The lyrics of Haschka’s poem, set to Haydn’s tune, would become the Austro-Hungarian national anthem. In 1841, the poet August Heinrich Hoffmann, who was born in what is now Germany, wrote the lyrics to the Deutschlandlied (the modern German anthem), in support of pan-Germanism.
    This would eventually beomce the German national anthem after WW1.
    In short, Austria had it first and Germany copied it."

      That's because the "german anthem" is based upon a melody written for the austrian emperor

    the austrian flag or to be precise, the design of a red, white, red bicolored flag dates back to the reign of the house of babenberg. the babenbergers ruled as counts/dukes of ostarichi (austria) from 976 to 1246, and it is therefor one of the oldest flaggs in europe, next to, for example the flag of denmark.
    according to a common legend, the then duke of austria, Leopold V., who participated in the crusades, layed off his belt after a battle, the only place on this tunic that remained white was under hits belt, the rest was soaked in blood.
    hope that this information is a bit of a help,
    the information since the reign of the habsburg dynastie is quite good i think.
    greetings from austria.

    • @nirfz
      @nirfz 5 років тому +6

      @Food for thought The legend is just a Legend, because actually the first ones to use the red white red were the noble family of "Eppenstein" (located in todays Styria) It was their Banner of Arms. From them the "Traungauer" family inherited it, from which the Babenberger dynasty inherited it, from which the Habsburgs inherited it. (every time because the former family went extinct, and the later inherited their land etc.)

      @@deepachauhan949 yeah nowadays, but it used to be the Emporor Anthem, composed for the Habsburgs by Joseph Haydn ("Emporor Quartet"). Unfortunately (from my point of view) it's not our anthem anymore, the melody is in my opinion way more beautiful than our nowadays anthem, supposedly composed by Mozart (it was probably composed by a Freemasonry colleague of Mozart)... but our nowadays' anthem is alright, I guess^^

    • @valdinjo3695
      @valdinjo3695 2 роки тому

      And was used as some sort of "Anthem" for the Habsburg Empire, the lyrics were adapted to the current reigning king (just like in UK nowadays), so e.g. people would sing "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser usw." ("May god protect Franz, our Emporor") under Franz' I. reign.

    So two things;
    As noted below (but admittedly a bit incorrectly) by a couple of folks, the well-known "red bars on white background" was carried by the Babenberg dynasty who were margraves and later on, dukes until 1156 when Emperor Frederic I Barbarossa decided to remove the margraviety of Austria (which back then mostly covered what are today the Bundesländer of Upper and Lower Austria) and formed it into a Duchy, the Duchy of Austria. Thus, the Austria that became a big player in the middle ages was sorta started by the Babenbergs, not the Habsburgs, though they exponentially increased the region's might.
    As for the Flag per se, the flag itself could be traced back to the Carinthian duke Adalbero, a member of the duchal family of Eppenstein, who might have worn the so-called Bindenschild earlier than the Babenbergs and then, when the Eppensteins died out, bequeathed the rights to the Eppenstein Coats of Armor to the Traungaus/Otakars who then in turn (when they died out in 1192) bequeathed their Coats of Arm, the aforementioned "red bars on white background" to the Babenbergs. They then bequeathed the CoA to the Habsburgs when they took over Austria, Styria etc. in 1278, after a short intermezzo when the Bohemian Premyslids ruled these lands.

    Hi, just feel I should add one small detail about the coat of arms: It is not true, that the coat of arms used between 1918 and 1933/34 is identical to the current one. This can even be seen in the video, where when comparing the coat in 2:51 (1st Republic of Austria) and in 4:54 (2nd republic), where the additional feature of the broken chains on the eagles' legs is added symbolizing the liberation of Austria.
    Also, it's spelled Anschluss, not Anchluss ;)

    One mistake I noticed: the crown on the eagle's head represents republicanism and not the middle class (this is a common misconception even here in Austria)

    • @AlexBakiper
      @AlexBakiper 3 роки тому +2

      You are wrong, it's not a common misconception but instead a fact that the "Mauerkrone" (the crown) sybolices the bourgeoisie. Da ich davon aus gehe, dass du deutsch beherrscht: Im “Gesetz vom 1. Mai 1945 über Wappen, Farben, Siegel und Embleme der Republik (Wappengesetz), BGBl. 7/1945, wurde im Artikel 1 festgelegt: “Die Republik Österreich führt das mit Gesetz vom 8. Mai 1919, St.G.Bl.Nr. 257 eingeführte Staatswappen, das die Zusammenarbeit der wichtigsten werktätigen Schichten: der Arbeiterschaft durch das Symbol des Hammers, der Bauernschaft durch das Symbol der Sichel und des Bürgertums durch das Symbol der den Adlerkopf schmückenden Stadtmauerkrone, versinnbildlicht, wieder ein. Dieses Wappen wird zur Erinnerung an die Wiederringung der Unabhängigkeit Österreichs und den Wiederaufbau des Staatswesens im Jahre 1945 dadurch ergänzt, daß eine gesprengte Eisenkette die beiden Fänge des Adlers umschließt.” www.demokratiezentrum.org/fileadmin/media/data/staatswappen.pdf, S. 6. Und ja wir haben ein neueres Gesetzt zum Wappen aus 1984, aber dort lässt sich keine Beschreibung der Symbolik finden bzw. wird nicht expliziet diese Interpretation von 1945 für nichtig erklärt. Daher bin ich der Meinung dass, auch wenn das Gesetz von 1945 nicht wirklich mehr gilt, die Interpretation der Symbolik noch gültig ist bzw. es zumindest keine andere offizelle bzw. neuere Deutung gibt.

    As a Jewish Israeli, I find the misuse of the swastika in both German episode and this one troubling, not cause its legitimacy or legality, but the historical value and educational value to the remembrance of the atrocities made by the Nazis and their assistants.
    It's important not to give a stage to fascism, but it's more important to learn and pass over to younger population, specially now when we see a rise in radical Right Wing parties and the voices in Europe are again irritating.

    Counting the red-white-ed flag "unofficial" is more or less wrong, the HRE was less of a country and more of a weird alliance thing, so the first flag was really the 1191 one

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt 4 роки тому +1

      No it was a country, the princes and kings all ranked under the emperor and more or less fought alongside him (although uniquely it did have foreign feudal possessions nominally paying tribute to the emperor, such as Hanover or Brandenburg, the capital of Prussia - the emergent Germanic rival to the HRE, spawned from an HRE German Baltic colony of the Germanic order - even being in the latter), the Holy Roman Empire was originally the Kingdom of the Germans before it conquered Rome, and before that was the East Frankish Kingdom, the German successor to Charlemagne’s Frankish Empire (with West Francia likewise becoming France). After the HRE’s destruction by Napoleon in 1806, the empire was reconstituted as the German Confederation, with the Austrian Emperor as Realm President. Austria foolishly overlooked Prussia’s growing strength in several areas, and allowed it, and Britain, their old imperial seats back in the confederation, despite being being rivals/adversaries of the German Confederation/Austria. Prussia used its position to win the favor of the Protestant north, which however did remain nominally under Austrian control until 1866. Basically the HRE and German Confederation were in fact states, but Austria’s weakness in the wake of the 30 years war and the reformation allowed the essentially autonomous politics to act unilaterally and conduct foreign policy, however they were still sworn to the emperor and if they acted against the emperor’s policy a lot of times it still meant war, just less often than before the reformation. Remember even under Prussia’s German Empire, the feudal German states still continued to exist, the only difference was Prussia’s centralization and direct control, which has only faded from the HRE due to the Habsburgs’ weakness.

    Possible corrections;
    The flag of the crusades was a Red Cross on a White background, not a Silver Cross on a Red background.
    I always loved the legend which you alluded to, but add the rest, that when the Duke took off his belt from his blood splattered tunic it left a white stripe... The Austrian flag (or was that the Latvian flag ha ha.)
    Generally these videos are Excellent!
    P.S.
    I'd love you to have a go at the U.K. flags including the proposals for a flag for Northern Ireland, the old one being defunct in 1972. But take care, this is one of the most politically sensitive issues in the World today ha ha.

    The Origin: Lepold V. Babenberg! (Ducke of Austria at that time). Siege of Acre 1189-1191; 3rd Crusade. At least that is the legend.: The clothing was soked with blood apart from the area under the belt which he removed after the battle. That is why there is a white stripe.
    Rudolf I. (Holy Roman Emperor) Habsburg, who fought against king Ottokar from Bohemia (1273 - 1278) in order to get the dutchy of Austria after the Babenebergers died out, was the first Habsburger in Austria. Their castle of origin lies in todays Switzerland.
    Also the flags after ww1 and ww2 had a slight difference in that the chains aeound the eagles feet were added after ww2 in order to symbolize liberation from nazi german dictatorship. Since the state of Austria itself was kind of a victim of nazi aggression, because it did not exist anymore, but parts of the population colaborated/identified with/as nazis and Germans.
    And it's "Anschluss" with and s, or "sch" which is more or less like "sh" in english, while "ch" is a totally different sound.

    Georgia's flag was influenced by the stars and bars of the confederacy.

    • @SoooooWhatt
      @SoooooWhatt 4 роки тому

      Correct, and no coincidence here with the Stars and Bars looking kind of Austrian! The Stars and Bars was designed by a Prussian, who was likely inspired by the Austrian flag (but with a United States looking canton added). This eventually led to the Georgian flag unintentionally using an Austrian looking flag.

    You didn't explain the flag's history in 4:14 well. Yes, his clothes were covered in blood, but he later put off his belt and then there was a white strip. In 3:26, it's not pronounced "Reik" it's "Reich" like it written. And it's Anschluss (the s missed), but you pronounced Anschluss right and Reich not?

      It's the melody of "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" which roughly means "God bless Emperor Franz" and is originally an Austrian song. Germany adapted the melody for its national anthem later

      I noticed that as well! That was from 1902, when the current one's from 2003! To be fair, both were based on the old flag of the Confederate States, but still, 1902 is quite different from 2003!

    I hate to bring up Battlefield 1, but the flag for the Austrian-Hungarian flag is the black and yellow Austrian Imperial flag with the double headed eagle with the crowns. And the default emblem is the Holy Roman Empire symbol with the yellow background and the double headed eagle with the circles with the heads rather than the crowns. Now I’m pretty sure it’s historically accuracy is low. But was their any chance of those two flags being used during World War I?

      @@aoilpe Kind of correct: part of it was under Russian occupation, but much like with Germany's arbitrary division among Russia, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, Austria was also arbitrarily divided among those nations until 1955, when the Allies pulled out of Austria and left the nation they helped develop to do it's own thing (more than I could say about Germany, whose arbitrary divisions became East and West Germany until 1990, or Korea, which is still divided).

      I've heard that the "ch" in "Reich" is (in German) pronounced as that "kh" sound that also appears in German in "fluch" (curse). In practice, however, English doesn't use this often (except maybe for very Scottish pronunciations of "loch", but even that is often pronounced "lock"), so English-speakers often pronounce it as "Rike" (which, fittingly, is an archaic English term meaning "realm", and is a cognate of the German term). In other words, it is properly "Reikh", but in English, "Rike" also works.

      Geneva was the HQ of the „League of Nations“, today’s UNO building. I think Hitler didn’t wanted a lot more allies against him...
