Visited Austria couple of years ago, Salzburg and Vienna, getting train to vienna from Salzburg. It was a wonderful trip and it’s a beautiful country. Austria has such a rich and varied history, great people, will definitely go back one day. Highly recommend both those cities as place to visit.

Pronunciation and christian (protestant) majority in the Ottoman army at the second siege of Vienna, 1683:
Amazing quick summary and as always lots of appreciation for making the effort to pronounce important names and events, the way the locals do! You even got the tongue twister Österreich nearly completely right.
The only little detail missing is, that we pronounce the t like a d: sounds like Oesderreich. But the impossible "ch" was spot on and even the British part of my family, who had lived in Vienna for over 60 years had troubles nailing it down.
One last detail, it was the Ottomans, not the "Turks" that ruled the Ottoman Empire and whose army besieged Vienna twice. It may seem like a minor detail in a short video that understandably doesn't have the time to explain the difference.
It DOES matter though, because the narrow majority of the Ottoman army that besieged Vienna in 1683 where actually christians.
No, most of them where not the cliché Janissaries, at the time forcefully abducted as children from the occupied Balkan countries, but they were actually newly converted protestants (even in the heartland of Catholicism, for a short time protestant where close to become the majority in Tyrol, Carinthia and Styria a century until decades earlier before they where brutally expelled to Romania, Hungary and the Balkans by the Habsburgs, some of them even made it to the USA, and are there still know as Hutterites, a kind of more modernised version of the Amish).
They voluntarily joined but also were used by the Ottoman army of Kara Mustafa, because they knew from own experience, although being taxed much higher and partially being discriminated, they where at least allowed to remain being protestants in a muslim empire, with at least some citizen rights. They knew too well what actually did happen to them when the Habsburgs pushed the Ottomans back down to Croatia: instant conversion and still being marginalised for life or death.
For fellow historians, here is one of the more detailed scientific publications on that matter: www.researchgate.net/publication/331967260_The_Siege_of_Vienna_and_other_Muslim_Christian_military_alliances
It is fascinating how these and many important historical facts get pushed away if they don't fit the current national narrative of any country.

Perfect video, like allways - only small details Mendel born in Moravia (Heinzendorf - Hynčice) and die in Brno - and he was clasic mix of nations in his blood...
Porsche was from Nord Bohemia (Vratislavice - Maffersdorf - bord house still exist - museum now). And he made a copy from another genius from TATRA cars - Hans Ledwinka (And he was born in Austrian land - died in Germany - Alois Ledwinka (Ledvinka is a czech word means Kidney) - his father was from CZ city Jihlava) -> and this brave man created Tatra V570 - which inspire Mr.Porsche whan he shortly cooperate with TATRA. Later Ledwinka create some own version of his TATRA in Steyr PUCH. Herr Porsche use Ledwinkas concept and later in Germany Porsche create VW 1 (Käfer). By the way F.Porsche was CZ citizen into 1935, after this year he was Reich citizen...
Czechia and Austria during more than 10 centruries have more common blood than CZ and SK - official genetics research from Austrian gov... Now we are in United Europe. God save this unity!

@@beezybuzyfamily, so you are saying the "Kipferl" appeared in Ottoman occupied Hungary before 1683, while it was supposedly created in Vienna the 1680ties? So the French got it all wrong for centuries when they to this day claim their croissant and Viennoise (sic!) originated from Vienna?
But maybe all historians (including the Hungarian historians I am close to) are wrong, because you found some facts that disprove that. Please provide the peer-reviewed scientific historical articles to prove your claim, thank you.

I'm of Austrian decent and my ancestors were of royal blood. Both the prince and princess 👸 fled Austria 🇦🇹 due to Hitlers regime. They and their principality traveled west to America 🇺🇸 and towards Mexico 🇲🇽 and settled there. They couldn't find a castle so 🤷 they found a abandoned church ⛪️ and turned it into a castle 🏰 after years gone by the prince returned to Austria 🇦🇹 leaving the Princess 👸 behind 💔 😢 she had severe arthritis so she decided to stay in Mexico 🇲🇽 💔 😢 she died of a broken heart 💔 and I inherented her arthritis and neuropathy and I feel as though my body is in a vice. PBS can you please 🙏 share this story with the public, especially for me. I really appreciate your support and kindness towards me and my fellow Austrians 💓. Thank you kindly, Ellen M Rangel ❤️.

Please stop calling us mountain Germans, we are proud of our Celtic heritage. It is a shame that the Noric language is dead but Celtic culture is still an important part of our culture. In 1919, Heinrich Lammasch, the last prime minister of Imperial Austria, proposed to give the young republic the name of Norische Republik or Noric Republic, because the ancient borders were similar to those of the new state, which - at the time - did not wish to be considered the heir of the Habsburg monarchy, but an independent, neutral and peaceful state. Also the Habsburgs are actually a Swiss family, the original Austrian tribe is called Babenberg and they have Byzantine blood.

I'm sorry, while I like the style, I have to say that this is not a good video. Don't get me wrong, this video presents many facts and surely they are well researched. The level of detail within these few minutes is nothing short of marvelous - however the titel is wrong. This is not a quick history of Austria. In fact it's not a history at all. It's a "facts from Austrian History" video, but it's not a history. The word history includes the word "story" and you are neither telling one, nor do you present the facts in a way that your viewers would be able to connect the dots. There's nothing wrong with any particular fact - but everything is wrong with the way you are presenting them. Your video has the structure of a "History of Britain" video - you just swapped the facts. This is wrong on so many levels. Not only do you basically retroject the concept of national states to antiquity (which is somewhat more understandible - albeit also wrong - when done for Britain due to the fact of it geographicly clear borders) you also never really ask the question what Austria is or was. The idea of German speaking Austria being a nation was born in 1918; No sooner. It wasn't a bad idea. But it is a young one and that matters! Before 1918, Austria was the name of and empire that had existed for 114 years as one of the five superpowers of Europe. During that time, the heyday of nationalism, Italians, Serbs, Germans, Hungarians, Bohemians, Croatians, Slovenians etc. developed the concept of national states. "Austria" was no such concept. Unlike ANY other European country there was no major "awakening of the Austrian people or anything of that sort. The Idea of Austria was the idea of an empire, not the idea of a nation. This is the key thing you have to understand if you are doing a history of Austria. Austria was an empire from 1804 throughout the 19th century. This empire ceased to exist in 1918. The name Österreich was then reasigned to a republic that was created by the winners of World War One and it took another war for the people of Austria to realize that this wasn't a bad idea.
If you want to tell a quick history of Austria, you need to tell it from two pivotal points of view, the first one being 1804. From there you first look back and then forth - this helps you explain the idead of the empire. Then you jump to the year 1945 looking back at 1918 and forth to the present, which will helpt you explain the story of the republic of the same name. (I apologize for my poor English)
