Meaning of Switzerland flag:
Red= brave
White= holy
Blue= going war
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_battles_of_the_Old_Swiss_Confederacy
*cough* that are only the wars switzerland was involved as a confederacy...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_mercenaries
There is an old saying:"point d’argent, point de Suisse" - "No Money, No Swiss"
The swiss were pretty much the war bitches, serving the ones that paid them the most.
In 1848 it was made illegal to serve in foreign wars or militaries with one exception, the swiss guard in vatican city
Just saying until 1848 pretty much the only thing swiss were famous for were wars.
Funny how times have changed.
The swiss were the best soliders in medieval times.
Actually red is war
Slithermotion I’ll refer to mercenaries as war bitches from now on😂
Edit: We also had a civil war btw. But it was as peaceful as a war can be with very few soldiers dead and it was also very short.

9:52 I think you did a little mistake there. The flag the man is holding is the flag of the Canton of Zurich. „Schwenkel“ could be the guy holding it or you misread something
You are right! Thanks for the correction, I was going crazy for a while trying to find the "Schwenkel" Canton lol
@@General.Knowledge I believe a Schwenkel is actually the stripe that goes across the top of the flag. Tho i could be misremembering that.
I heard Schwengel for the first 3 times.
A "Schwenkel" ist the red part of the flag you can see on the picture. "Schwenkel" is also the part of a pump. which you push to get water. You see those kind of pumps in Rom, Italy.
Thank god. I was going crazy because I had no idea, what canton that was supposed to be.

Kudos for the Swiss flag video. Just to be precise, the flag of canton Glarus depicts Saint Fridolin, an Irish monk who brought Christianity to the valley. Irish monks were very active in Switzerland, or Helvetia as it was called back then,. For example, canton Saint Gallen is named after another monk.
A very good study of Swiss history! Having lived in Switzerland for 30 years, I learned even so some things, so thankyou indeed!

@@fiftoufi2353 as wallisers we have Marignan so it's ok xD
Very good video! I enjoyed it much, as well as the other flag videos. Some remarks: 1. The origins of the flag due to the Theban Legion are not that farfetched and legendary. The leader of the Theban Legion, Mauritius (French: Maurice, German: Moritz), became venerated in many Swiss regions after the legion was massacred around 300 AD in Agaunum (today St-Maurice, Ct. Valais). The flag ascribed to him was mostly red with either a white cross touching the edges or a white cross with shamrock ends. So when the different confederate troops chose for the first time a common sign on their uniforms in the battle of Laupen in 1339, it was quite obvious that they chose a white cross (later on red ground). 2. The common triangle flag which you show in 2:58 is recorded for the first time in 1422 in the battle of Arbedo (that picture). If you mention 1289, that was probably the war flag of the Holy Roman Empire which had the same look. So the common confederate flag may well be inspired by the flag of Saint Mauritius *and* the war flag of the HRE. When there was no need for a common flag, the white cross was put on the different confederate flags (3:02). 3. The inscription of the Helvetic Republic’s flag was not only French but also German and Italian (for the respective regions). The inscription on the backside was «Liberty Unity Equality», likewise in the three languages. The green color was a reverence to the newly founded Lemanic Republic (today Ct. Vaud) which was freed from Bernese occupation and thus very francophile (and it was also the color of the revolution, as you mention). The other colors may be a reverence to the old founding states Schwyz and Uri but that’s not proved. 4. «Schwenkel» means indeed the additional pennant of the flag. A Schwenkel is always joint with the main flag, otherwise it’s called Wimpel (pennant).
1:37 actually this map is from the 18. Century
If only one could read that somewhere 🤔

Just want to add a little detail, the flag from Glarus does not show a pilgrim but Saint Elm.
Super interesting, thanks!

9:50 The Flag is actually from Zürich. "Schwenkel" is the term for the red band on top of it, not a region.
I'm only an adopted swiss but I do love my country and it's origins, which you made kinda simple to understand. Because swiss history is long and very very complicated, even I don't really grasp all of it. Even after many years of studying our history at school, we mostly do Canton history because we strongly identify to our respective cantons more than we identify as Swiss.
Thank you for that video It was interesting and I can surely say I learned some things !
Very interesting video, thanks. The character on the Glarus flag isn't a pilgrim, but a saint, which is why he's represented with a halo around his head. He was called Fridolin of Sackingen who's legend says that he received a large part of the canton as a gift.
I like that one of the coat of arms got the word "can't" inside xD
No No. The Holy Roman empire did NOT help us in war. The Austrian Hapsburg dynasty were ruling us, then we decided to start a war of independence against them. This was originally the 3 forest kantons Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. They formed an alliance and declared war on Austria. Swiss won and more kantons joined. Then the Burgundian Empire tried to invade on Austrias behalf and lost. Then the Schwabian League which was a part of the Holy Roman Empire invaded on austrias behalf and also lost. After these 3 wars the Old Swiss Confederation proved themselves fully independent. Yes I agree the flag is from Schwyz, but to say the Holy Roman empire helped is completely wrong, they were one of our enemies. Apart from that its still a good video and thankyou for spending time at looking at our small yet beautiful nation.
I went to the gymnasium ( college?) in Einsiedeln and absolutely loved the history lessons. The Father (Pater) would explain to us how the farmers from Schwyz ( Capitol of Kanton/state Schwyz) would be pissed at some new law or taxes from the catholic church and would go on a rampage to Einsiedeln, a town about 10 miles away, with a huge monastry, and just ransack the place.
Or how at the battle of Moorgarten the Swiss forces would just wait high up on the hill, and wait for the Habsburg cavalry to ride along the lakeside and then toss luber and rocks down the hill, smashing the enemy army with debree, and watching the horses panic and run into the water/mud and drown.
While the Swiss just rampaged with their halberds, pulling the noble knights off their horses and opening their heavy armor like you open a can of tuna.
Swiss military forces were so high in demand that eventually an italian and french army faced eachother, and their main forces were swiss mercenaries. That was the point where we decided screw it, i'm goin home....and we stayed neutral since then.
Neutral doesn't mean no army tho, we shot down both nazi and allied planes crossing our borders in WW2...
Just Great! Now I Finally know the history of our flag...regards from Switzerland ☺
4:30 marignaner march is the best march
I am from Switzerland and learnt somthing new. Thank you :D
hmmmmm tztztztzztz schäm di :)
Thanks for supporting my nation with information
swiss here. i actually learned something. thank you :-)
The origin of the Theban Legion is actually rather reasonable. The entire legion was executed near what is today Saint-Maurice in Valais, Switzerland, when Maurice - head of the Theban Legion - refused to slaughter christians at the order of the Romans. Maurice was a martyr and later became a Saint. All around Switzerland, from the western part of Austria up to Germany and to the west, Saint Maurice kind of became the patron saint, and lots of cathedrals, monasteries and villages were named after him (Saint-Maurice in Valais, where he died, for example - or St. Moritz, a very well-known village for the rich people). It would not surprise me, if the Swiss cross stems from their battle flag.
Greetings from Switzerland Nice video buddy
Awesome!
I actually have a bern flame flag, and I love it
Scho mega lostig wie er Schwyz ussprecht :)
Btw: The white cross has its origin from Lake Lucerne, where the confederation was founded. It presents the 4 arms of the lake. Awesome Video. :)
At 9:53 minutes, it shows the flag of the city of Zürich with a red schwenkel. This means, the city of Zürich lost its flag in a battle to the enemy and now has to shamefully add the red band to the newly made flag. Zürich was allowed to remove a similar band after the battle in Morat 1476 because of exceptional bravery.
Really nice video. You really murdered the names ;P
Wow this was very good ! Best from Wallis ! chchch
I have to tell you. that we have this type of flag because it flys better when you throw it.. (big tradition of flag throwing). And when it came to adapt our flag to the rest of the world, we had to explain that we have a good reason for this size...
Interestingly enough, in heraldry, a canton is a square area at the upper corner of a shield. In the US flag, the Blue field and stars would be blazoned as being "in canton". Schwyz was a canton with a white cross in canton.
Joke: What do you call a Swiss who feels sick
I am Swiss and I didn’t even know the origin of our Flag… Thank’s for sharing
Fun fact: In Swiss German the word Switzerland is Schwiiz and shares pronunciation with the Canton Schwyz. It would be something like shweetz in english.
Der Name Schweiz kommt ja auch vom größten der drei Urkantone.

"Fun with flags" ??!! I knew this would come one day or another.
Even as a Swiss, this contains quite a bit of new information for me!
The german name Schweiz descends from the most important original kanton: Schwyz. Although the foundation myth took place in the kanton of Uri.
The Switzerland's flag is square because of the neutrality. No different sides and meassures. The cross is also a neutrum since it goes in each direction and not only horizontal or vertical. That's it.
8:58 Monaco get the heck outta there
Indonesia must've been colonised by the Swiss.
I‘m from Switzerland and I didn‘t even know how the flag was made 😂
The canton of Schwyz is pronounced "Shveets". Which is also the way we pronounce the name of the country "Schweiz" in Swiss German. :)
First of all, the Habsburger Flag was a White Cross on Red Background, but extended to the ends. The Swiss equal Flag symbomizing the equal rights of the four Sides all Kantons .
Schwyz is pronounced something like "Shweets". If you take the sound for the double e but shorten it like you would pronounce a singular e you get the endonym for Switzerland (at least for the German speaking part of it).
3:05 the flag with the priest to the left of the screen is Glaris' flag. The guy is still on it today.
Don't mind me, I'm just another swiss person commenting this video, because it was on my startpage ;P

Hi, I am Swiss...First of all, very well done! The flag is square also because we want to have the same distance from the cross to the borther in each direction: It simbolises "euqlity". Equality among the Cantons, among the people.
