Backcountry Burbot | Ep. 2 | Fur Hat Ice Tour
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 лис 2020
- To pivot off of the ease and accessibility we featured in episode 1, episode 2 goes the opposite direction and shows Cal and Miles embarking on a deep backcountry winter expedition requiring tracked Can-Ams and thousands of pounds of gear. Ice fishing can be simple and local, but it can also be adventurous. Cal and Miles explore a high mountain Montana lake that Cal’s been wanting to fish for two decades, in the hopes of catching a large, or at least respectable, burbot. Cal and Miles discover less than optimal conditions, but work through and figure it out. They manage to catch a variety of fish, cook some delicious burbot, and try out fried burbot liver. #fueledbynature #MeatEater

The biggest silver lining of this crazy year is the fact that the Meateater crew is freakin killing it.
Amen.
What I didn’t realize is the production company is the same one that worked with Anthony Bourdain on all his television shows
These fukn meateater fellas have me looking at taking up hunting at 45 freakin years old! It is pretty fun so far
@@TheSmilingFury Glad to have you as an outdoorsman 👍
I figure I have so much to learn that it will keep me busy for a while
Ole Cal's frosty stache has the ladies yearning for this lake's coordinates.
Lmaoooo. Truth!
I'm just imagining some thirsty chicks trekking across the lake in search of his mustache
I’m pretty sure he wanted to pull them off, but they told him to leave them alone because it made the episode!
This comment is poetry lmao
it looks nasty
"Man, really need to get back into ice-fishing shape" lmao
The people who complain about how boring ice fishing is just suck at ice fishing. It’s just as fun as open water if you know what you’re doing and if you spend enough money on gear for it lol.
Y’all uploading takes the edge off stressful workdays and motivates me for getting out on the weekends. Thank you!
You need to rig up some cross country skis to that big sled and make yourself a hybrid Smitty Sled. It would pull 100% easier.
There is just nothing better than burbot fishing! Here in Finland we mostly do the fishing at night as they’re way more active then.
Awesome vid!
Same here in canada. At night use a glo tube jig and pound the bottom. Easily get 100 or more a night
@@wolverinefishing6877 I can second this as long as you know where to go. Caught well over 100 about a week ago.
"On to the next hole!" *cue 70's porn music*
When you boil it all down, you just have to match the hatch.
- Cal, I think!
Miles and Cal have really great on-camera chemistry. They had a great Dos Boat episode too. Please team them up for and episode of CWIR in the field season 2.
From a guy in NW WI- Strong disagree regarding the performance enchanting benefits of beer and cheese curds. You havent lived until you shotgunned a Hamms and chased it with a fistful of cheese curds. it gives you wings!
Hamms... I remember buying those in college for .50 a can.. This was 10 years ago lol
Hamms is disgusting, if your in Wisconsin it better be spotted cow 🍻 or anywhere in the Midwest a Buschhhhhh
@@tomschumacher5434 Sounds like someone isnt from Northern WI! Most up here have had it with spotted cow since Dan and Deb starting spouting off their political views
@@travisbowers5143 you are correct sir, I’m originally from Minnesota now in Alaska. Went to college with a bunch of Wisconsin friends and I do remember drinking hamms when we were scrounging for a beer lol I haven’t been to Wisconsin since 2012. That is unfortunate because spotted cow I remember being dam good.
I gotta try that!
Cheers from central Montana 🍻
I like how Miles is like this is "MY RECORD" Cal's like ... we caught this fish.
5:00 "Lets stuff some burritos and slam some coffee"
That stachcicle really started making my mouth twitch after awhile.
The 'stache was adding even more distraction than usual in this episode with those stachecicles
Born and raised in MN. Stared down that ice hole for many hours as a kid. Lived here in North Idaho for nearly thee decades now. Burbot seem to be a big deal on the Kootenai River in Boundary County. Never knew they were the exact fish called an eelpout on Mille Lacs lake in Minnesota. Learn something new everyday. You might check out the Eelpout festival on Mille Lacs. Apparently, it's a big deal.
Keep it up guys. Never figured I'd find myself watching other folks ice fish after a childhood of ice fishing. No regrets!
Ole cal started looking like a cool walrus
Have to say the meat eater crew is doing big things and branching out to even bigger and more thrilling adventure's than before!
Good job fellas, maybe leave the fishing to Jay Siemens. Lol.
Cal is a joy to watch. You guys have so much great content. Keep it up.
We used to fish burnout alot in northern minnesots, beteeen 20 to 30 feet of water clear water sandy gravely with some smaller boulders the bite was almost always an he before dark on up until 8 or 9 pm if was always a good time actually for us the bigger the sucker minnow or shiner the bigger the eel put and occasionally anice walleye we caught them up to 8 lbs they were delicious! Great video guys keep up the good work!
Rogan/Rinella 2024
Please keep up this content overload! We love it!!!
Love the new online content like this. That can-am would have been fine though, that is what it's made for. Can't imagine spending $30k on that just to leave it onshore. Should have taken snowmobiles if you were that concerned about it. I'm sure you'll get it dialed next time though...
Also, try chumming the holes next time for cusk, especially on a multi day trip like that. Anything smelly may work, I like cans of cat food personally. They also bite best at night. Not sure what the regs are in MT, but here we're allowed to set special cusk rigs during the night. No live bait or tip ups allowed, as this would be too effective on lake trout, so pretty much cut bait or dead minnow on the bottom tied to a spruce bow. Wake-up and pull up your breakfast.
I can't wait for the cold burbot season. This is getting me hyped up.
Gotta say I wasn't real keen on this series when you dropped the trailer but I never should've doubted you guys. These first 2 episodes have been your usual excellent and entertaining content, bravo meateater team!!
Amazing video production. Thank you for all of the great knowledge, and I look forward to a fish and cook with Burbot
Can’t wait for the Sturgeon spearing in WI. Episode with the Latvian Eagle 🦅
This episode was amazing. Thanks Cal!
Absolutely love Cal's ICEY STACHE brrr👌🏽👌🏽
I love Ryan videos! Even when I have trouble hearing him over his epic stach!
Outstanding fishing thank you for sharing brother
this was such a great episode. loved every aspect, showing that its actually hard work and worth the experiences gained!
Nice, waiting for these everyday now
I've never seen more ice in a mustache than what Cal can manage to get in his.
Love this new series content. I'm glad you are sharing this with those of us who hate being cold!
Icefishing is the most over looked wide spread type of fishing.
@Nor'east Outdoors I see your from NH, I'm in western mass and I spend every weekend ice fishing in winter, started out with a hand auger and a jig pole pulled behind me on a piece of plywood with skiis screwed to the bottom. I literally prefer it to shore fishing yet I see very little outdoors media addressing it!
Most of the world never has a chance to do it. Looks cool though. I’d love to have the chance to try some day.
I’ve been waiting for this since LAST WEEK
Omg 7 days?? I can’t believe you waited so long!!
That icicle! Dang, Cal!
I am loving this series. I've never officially ice fished but it's a bucket list item.
The ice is already around here in Canada , when it’s good and think be safe and go have some fun, go with someone you know
I love the music change to jazz!
Poor mans lobster is my favorite fish snack! Awesome episode, thanks guys for representing this awesome sport.
Ryan is every Montanan ever.
Those are some mighty fine stashciles ya got thar Cal =D .
Make me excited to hit the hard water. Coolest ice fishing video I’ve seen.
Midwest rule, when you set a tip up do not grab the spool. Good chance of the fish getting off, pull the tip up and let the line run for a bit. Then get the slack out, once you feel the fish that’s when you set
Learning more about ice fishing is great for me lots of bad experience on ice fishing but I’m still in on it ty all
One thing they didn't tell you about prospecting is that you need to drill like 30 holes in a horseshoe pattern to find the burbot easier.
Awesome episode, guys!
Love any meat eater content
So excited I peed a little
Might want to get that checked out by a professional
We had these in England, but they went extinct about a century ago. Our waters are badly polluted in many cases, or otherwise unsuitable. I grew up in their last stronghold, but I ain’t old enough to have caught one!
More Miles and Cal!!
What an absolutely awesome episode.
Yall really need to make a smitty sled to pass around during the ice season
Loving the fishing videos. Keep up the good work guys!
FINALLY! Something I can confidently say I'm more efficient at than Cal.
Sadly, he still has better equipment than the majority of us.
More Cal and Miles episodes!!!
Add some bay leaves and old bay seasoning to the liquid you boil the fish in, it really gives it a lobster taste. Dip or finish in butter, and its delicous 👌
Thanks for all the content this year guys! Has definitely helped! Keep em coming! Loved the sturgeon episodes!
Callahan is a ratings genius
Love the show guys
You had me at Cal-lo
Breaking a pb through the ice must be such a good feeling
bravo sierra. beer and cheese curds keep you in the shack all day. call me crazy but i call that performance enhancing!
Filled Burbot Broiled with a tab of butter you can’t cook bourbon any better it’s fantastic grandma’s old recipe
Ever since the goose hunt this is my favorite team!
beautiful ice barbels
I LOVE THIS SHOW 😀
i have a small sled just for strictly fishing. a trip for a few hours. you're right though, there's no middle ground, you add in the camping aspect, and its a second, much larger sled!
Great video
That 'brod kick's ass.
5:51 deep drop boyz!
Here in Northern Minnesota we typically fish for burbot aka eelbout at night
Crosswinds lake AK, this fall we were catching 5-10lb burbot every set. So tasty.
Awesome video
Those were some serious stachicles.
when you do these things you gotta show the temps for us east coast folks
Good video guys.
Anyone else dread when you gotta whip it out to take a piss in that kind of weather?
Saw one Beaver Dam tip up in there!
love the upload did some fishing of my own out here on the Willamette river only pike seem to be hungry!
I love Oregon 🤘🏼
@Ty Ervast it’s an invasive species
i think I would’ve taken my chances with the side by side, tbh. that’s a shitload of equipment to be lugging around. lol.
plus... I think hanging out with Cal would be awesome. he seems like such a cool dude. and whether he means it or not, he’s absolutely hilarious.
Foie Gras of the river!!
The icicle mustache is really fitting.
Crazy how much bigger they are in mn
Darn right!
One hell of a mustache
They need a smitty sled.
Had a day similar to this struggle of a start... but the results were a bucket of pan fish n 1/2 dosen monster smallies(pic to the left)
“spritecicle!”
“ok then”
My version of poor man's lobster: (no burbot here so I usually do it with lakers)
Cube meat and blanch in water that is salted and with sugar for about 5 minutes. Strain and place the cubes on a sheet pan. Generously sprinkle ol bay and cover with parmesan cheese (not that green can crap) and broil until the cheese is lightly browned. Melt some butter for dipping.
Enjoy!
Tempura batter the fillets fry em up nice.
As a person who has gone ice fishing my whole life, I know there is 0% chance you fit all that gear into 1 sled. No way.
Cameramen pull sleds too...
My cousin built a seven foot wide sled from plywood. Yes, all the gear fit in the sled, no, humans could not pull the damn thing.
The showed two sleds at the very beginning.
Nothing like watching ice fishing videos after helping people catch redfish in shorts and a t shirt all day
Good thing they have all that camouflage on those fish would have seen em otherwise
It irks me that cal won't break that ice of his stache. By the way what do you think he named him?
Come to Minnesota for some good size eelpout. That bigger one you caught is average size here haha
Should of fished for brookies in the super shallow hole
Can you imagine getting all the way out there and spending all that time and the ice auger doesn’t work?
Just FYI there is another kind of freshwater cod , it's called a Murray cod they're critically listed on the endangered species list. I believe they're located in upper Australia.
They aren’t cod. Burbot are the only freshwater cod.
yeah murray cod arent actually cod, australians just have weird names for fish
Last mountain lake in sask canada. Libe right by it and years ago i pulled in a couple over 5 lbs. No idea what i had at the time.
