I taught for 17 years in California, then retired to Texas. My pension from CalPERS is very generous and now I get the benefit of the lower cost of living here in Denton. I would take retirement benefits into consideration. The benefits offered by California schools are pretty great compared to those provided in much of the rest of the country. Depending on how it would work with their current retirement plan might be a big factor. If they would be eligible to retire from California and keep the higher pension and better benefits in a relatively short time, they might consider that.

Especially considering they get summers off, every major and minor holiday, and ample sick time. All stuff people in lesser paying jobs don't get. • @Marthastewart209.

Teachers pay are based on tenure and not skill. When a teacher is fresh out of college they are making like $34K a year when rent can be $24K a year. If you stick it out (regardless of being a good or bad teacher) then it 10 or 20 years you will make a ton of money. For the same work, same level of skill etc.

    - fully paid house

    - they love the state
    Moving to another state:
    - moving expenses
    - new house purchases (not sure how much cheaper they are)
    - 100k/yr less income, new school, new coworkers
    - cheaper living
    - less seniority at work and what about retirement benefits? anything transferable?

While in TN I asked so many locals what they don't like, "the summer is blistering hot and the BUGS" . After living on the coast where the weather is wonderful that would be hard for me. It's hot for 3.8 months out of the year in TN. I've done my research. I also noticed that people do not use the big back yards. They don't landscape and garden, must be due to the heat and bugs. I heard Chiggers are a problem. I would miss all the time we spend outside in the back.
There are plenty of stories of folks who moved to TN and came back to Orange County. We are sick of the woke polices but with all the people moving to other states for economic reasons those states will change too.

They are in the 10% bracket for California income tax, not 15%. The next bracket, 13% doesn't kick in until $1 million, which they are well under. Also, as teachers they're getting all sorts of deductions and credits. CalPers retirement and medical benefits are also very good. The math here is daunting .

If they buy a cheaper house when they move and put the remainder into investments, that helps mitigate some of the income loss as well. E.g. 450k home >> 250k home means 200k for investments. Being able to put that into an investment today and watch it grow would have a significant impact. Add that to not having income tax and somewhat lower cost of living and moving looks pretty attractive.

A paid off house, great income they should stick it out to become millionaires and retire soon.
