If you are releasing the fish why are you grabbing them inside the gill area.

This subject has been debated over and over. According to most researchers holding by the gill plate and by its lower tail area is the safest hold for a fish. Trick is don't touch the gills, you want to grab the hard bone / cartilage of the gill plate. But like I said it's a debate everyone reads different research reports.
