Blood type in Japan has a connotation that western cultures do not have. For the Japanese, blood type is a way of determining someone's personality, behavior and even compatibility with others. Of course, there is no scientific basis for it, so it's just superstition. At any rate, I think they ask for your blood type because it is part of a cultural, common thing.
It is a common cultural thing, comparable with the zodiac signs on the west. I personally don't believe in either but sometimes it gets to be a nice/interesting way to start a conversation with someone.
I remember hearing the original Fire Emblem for GBA had a blood type check with your name entry, and outside of Japan that wasn't included because that connotation doesn't carry overseas.
I noticed that in the original Resident Evil manual and some other Capcom/Konami games. They should have run with it and made blood bags health powerups that only work for certain characters
Oh man, Shane sound so much chill in this video than nowadays. He seems always angry about everything in the newer videos much but these are kinda relaxing.
"why do they need your blood type?" Answer: Just as constellation signs are a fun way to show somebody's personality, in Japan, it's believed fairly strongly that a person's blood type decides someone's personality. The blood type question shows up on a lot of surveys and profiles.
Too late to explain and probably someone else has filled you in, but the blood type is important in Japan because they think people's personalities are based on what blood type you have.
Most Japanese don't believe that haha. I thought it would be for if you were in a car accident and were losing a lot of blood, someone who find your WonderSwan and know which type of blood type you would have to complete the transfusion. Meh, that's still less stupid than thinking your blood type determines your own unique ego.
One of those systems I have always been interested in, just wish there was a lot more games that weren't as text heavy. Still though would've been a neat release outside of Japan if it did happen
Gunpey was my favourite game on the system, and even that game has a release on the North American PSP and DS. It kind of plays better on Wonderswan though.
There is a Klonoa game called Klonoa Moonlight Museum But to Quote ExoParadigmgamer "There's nothing in Moonlight Museum gameplay wise that you can't get from Empire Of Dreams"
Take a look at the Bandai Wonderswan Color, a hand held video game console only ever released in Japan from the creator of the Nintendo's Gameboy! WonderSwan Color Review (Japanese Handheld!) - Rerez #Nintendo #gameboy #gaming #Console #Review #Wonderswan #Bandai #Gunpey #Color #Handheld #Overview #History #Japan #Japanese #Rare #Retro #Old #Unknown #Vintage
Each game originally came with a little plastic case that the cartridge snaps into. It protects the contacts absolutely. The choice to have exposed contacts is what gave the handheld a slim profile. if they were in some sort of housing, the console would have been a bit thicker.
The bloodtype question is based on a popular belief in Japan, according to it, the bloodtype affects your personalities, that's why in manga, anime and videogames in the artbooks or question and aswer sections the characters bloodtype is revealed in their personal information.
for some reason blood type is considered a physical trait to share to people. Apparently they ask you blood type when registering to email, or any social network.
The only reason I'd heard of it was because I had a Japanese friend that carried one with her fairly regularly. To this day, hers is the only Wonderswan I've seen in person.
I only know of the Wonderswan Color because one of my favorite games of all time, Riviera: The Promised Land, started off as a Wonderswan Color game before being released both in Japan and America on the GBA. (It also got re-released on the PSP in HD with revamped music and voice acting in both English and Japanese. I can’t recommend it enough)
Nice video, as usual coming from Rerez. I may be wrong, but I think the detachable battery compartment may have been to protect the system from damage due to battery corrosion/leaking. That way one could easily clean or replace the plastic piece instead of messing with the WonderSwan itself.
DS and 3DS cards have exposed connectors. There's also Klonoa: Moonlight Museum, the first game on this system I heard of. ExoParadigmGamer did a review of it. If a company other than Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft releases a console in Europe next gen, I might get it.
The thing about the DS and 3DS is that their contacts have... "extrusion barriers" between the contacts. That way, you can only possibly damage them with a direct hit.
I think the battery compartment is a clever idea and makes it less likely to get lost as the battery is attached to the "cover" and neccesary for the device to function.
Blood Type is a pretty common thing to ask in a Japanese game. It's sort of like asking your astrological sign. And the games usually came with nice little cases that protect the connectors.
Late catching this video but glad I did. I had wondered what the heck a wonder swan was. Looks like it was pretty cool. Too bad it never came out here. One advantage of having the contacts exposed is that you can see them to clean them easier. It's not like they are any more fragile than a CD and look how people treat those. Great Vid. Would be really interesting to look into what games are available for the importer who doesn't speak Japanese.
After being linked to your Hilton ultimate team play video from Nerdcubed, i have to say, you do very high quality and well edited video. I'm quite surprised by your lack of subs. So congratulations, you've gained a subscriber, and carry making great videos .
I actually did manage to play the wonderSwan colour, when I was a kid because one of my neighbours that lived next-door was from Japan, and he allowed me to play it a couple of times before he moved back to Japan.
Another great video. While the exposed pins may cause Wonderswan games to gain more wear and tear (and certainly dirt) than other cart games, they aren't the only system to use this design The TurboGrpahx 16/PC Engine also have exposed pins on their Turbochips/Hu Cards (Games). Anyway keep plugging away.
Check out the WonderBorg for the system. An insect inspired programmable robot that you program and control from the Wonderswan. As the programming software is mainly symbols, you can get it to work without knowing Japanese. A very cool accessory exclusive to the system.
From what I understand, the blood type thing is considered to be connected to your personality. It's supposedly a bit like asking your astrological sign.
Yup, reading manga character descriptions (I noticed they always added the blood type). A translator added a note about it on a translated manga once. www.issendai.com/rpgs/takemywings/bloodtypes.htm
Blood type is basically horoscopes. A lot of people believe that you can predict someone's personality by their blood type, like how a lot of people believe that birth month determines personality. So if someone in Japan said "She's blood type B", that's like someone in the US saying "He's a Capricorn".
5:03 Actually, in the boxes of most Wonderswan Color games, there's an Ad for a connector cleaning pen that you would rub back and forth on the contacts. Pretty cool!
50% comments = explaining why blood type is important in Japan, lol I've heard of WonderSwan because I downloaded an emulator to play the Final Fantasy I remake. I eventually bought the game for the PS1.
it would be great if the system among your name, blood group, also asks about your favorite pickles brand ! ...anyway, great review. Gunpei is an underrated Nintendo creator, all the praise goes to Miyamoto while Gunpei is forgotten!
Blood type is because, in Japan it's considered to be one of those things that determines personality. Don't know if the system personalises in any way based on it, but its very similar to how we in the west look at zodiac signs. This is why a lot of Japanese games list their character's blood types.
I actually bought a WSC years ago. I got the FF1 limited edition version of the game, which has the warrior of light on the screen's edge and comes with a copy of the game itself. I got it and 8 additional games(Including other Squaresoft titles FF2, FF4, Romancing SaGa, and Blue Wing Blitz) in a package deal for around $90 and free shipping. All of their games and the system even had thier boxes and instructions. I now have 25 titles, and my favorite has to be Makai Toushi SaGa, the remake of the first SaGa title which was released stateside under the name the Final Fantasy Legend for gameboy. These days WSC stuff is much more expensive, and the amazing deal I got will probably not be repeated anytime soon. Also I should point out that all of the games came with a hard plastic case to slide the games into when you weren't using them, because of the exposed teeth. I make sure that whenever I get new games for it it comes with that case.
There are a lot of Gundam games on the Wonderswan (4 on the Wonderswan, 13 on the Wonderswan Color). The one you have is more or less an adaptation of the first arc of the first anime series, but (AFAIK), most of them are spinoffs. I hope I can get a Wonderswan Color one of these days, as I'm a huge Gundam fan, and I'd love to play some of the more obscure Gundam games.
That mention of the Virtual Boy reminds me that I need to get a controller for mine. I have the system and a small stack of games. But no controller. I've never even tried it to see if it works, since I have no controller.
Another great WonderSwan Color game I'd recommend is "Rhyme Rider Kerorican," which I reviewed on GameFAQs many years ago. No real text to speak of whatsoever, so it's easily playable even with no Japanese knowledge. There's also a great port of Golden Axe, and a pretty fun Zelda-esque action RPG called Star Hearts. If you really want something neat, though, try to find yourself a "WonderBorg." It's a spider robot that's programmable wirelessly through a special WonderSwan cartridge.
There's also the fact that several WonderSwan games switch between vertical and horizontal. I once thought that Moonlight Museum, one such game that uses switching a lot, could be remade for smartphones, but then I realized that controlling a game that uses two buttons with a touchscreen would be a pain, plus it only sold about five copies anyway. And Klonoa is dead.
Not too sure. That's the only one I'm specifically aware of. I was sort of a casual WonderSwan Color player, as I happened to live in Japan between 2001 and 2003, when the system was at the height of its popularity and there were as many shelves of WSC games in stores as there were GBA games. My most-played games on the system were definitely Golden Axe, Rhyme Rider Kerorican and Star Hearts -- the latter of which requires some Japanese knowledge to complete, but can still be enjoyed without.
Almost bought one when I traveled to Japan around X'mas time year 2000. Was still in college and hesitated due to budget. Would be cool to own one in the states I guess.
If anyone is a digimon fan all the games on the wonderswan are main series canon. In fact if you can find the double pack anode cathode tamer get it. It is fully in English and explains ryos backstory from tamers and a little of ken's from adventure2.
the golden contact pin exposed is good, just like a SD card, you is not so easy to damage it, but so easy to clear. I would say the card is a good design
From taking less batteries for longer battery life, to being able to play games in two different resolutions, this handheld was severely ahead of its time...
if this system have backlight and make it outside of japan it's will be the big hit of that era .... imo it's have the coolest design play shmup with portrait orientation and i have play some games through emulation way cooler than gba graphic was neat too .
I had that handheld console in 2005, but...unfortuanaly it had only one game on japanise, I dont understand that and I lost it somewhere...Now I realy want it back...
I've heard of the Wonderswan, it's the gaming system that had some Digimon and Super Robot Wars games on it. It seems like a good system, too bad it was only in Japan and discontinued.

Yeah I picked one up when they first came out. I happened to be in Japan at the time. I was loving it when riding the trains. Now I go back and think "damn i love the games for this system but how the hell did I play this I cant see anything lol"
I actually have one of those, bought via eBay. And, yeah, the secondhand package included Final Fantasy and a Hunter X Hunter game. By the way: I'm looking for that Uchuu Senkan Yamato (aka Star Blazers) game; and that Gundam game seems to be based on Gundam: UC.
A hit was placed on Gunpei after the Virtual Boy fiasco, authorizing the Yakuza to take him out. He was run down on a freeway in Japan. Miyamoto-san does not take such failure lightly.
It's unusual you mention the exposed contacts as my mind went straight to the ATARI LYNX and PC Engine and they've been far more reliable than say the GAMEBOY and NES cart's I own which usually need a wipe or if your a sadist blow before insertion to get a clean boot, you'd think it the other way round but not in my experience.

Some say, all the Ashens fans laughed that day.
I have as a fan of Exoparadigmgamer who reviewed Klonoa Moonlight Museum for the original Wonderswan.
Exactly my thoughts XD

Most of the English speaking majority of gamers have never heard of the Wonderswan. It's not common knowledge.
for some reason blood type is considered a physical trait to share to people. Apparently they ask you blood type when registering to email, or any social network.
me too i rember seeing it at ebgame in 1996
+Rerez Blood type describes personality traits. it's almost like a person's zodiac sign.

All of their HD remakes look so frightening with that awful filter that they use lol
Japan believes your blood type explains your personality. Look it up. ;)
@Marco Polo I agree.
This system seems really cool, and I'm kinda bummed out that it wasn't more popular. It looks like a great platform
Randomly found this channel, and i've got to say - you deserve more views, as these videos are very well put together. Keep up the good work!

Looking into games to play on my RG405V, and look what pops up! Different than the videos I’m used to from you guys!
Having the cart pins exposed also makes it a lot easier to clean them, so it might have been a deliberate choice.
The correct pronunciation for Gunpei isn't 'Gun pay' but 'Goon Pay'
it would be great if the system among your name, blood group, also asks about your favorite pickles brand ! ...anyway, great review. Gunpei is an underrated Nintendo creator, all the praise goes to Miyamoto while Gunpei is forgotten!

Well in retrospect the exposed contacts became the norm looking at you DS and Switch game carts.
Wonderswan is one of my favorite consoles ever.

the golden contact pin exposed is good, just like a SD card, you is not so easy to damage it, but so easy to clear. I would say the card is a good design
If you lose the plastic battery holder, just get Sammy's rechargeable battery pack!
From taking less batteries for longer battery life, to being able to play games in two different resolutions, this handheld was severely ahead of its time...
Nice presentation
I did an essay on Gunepi Yokoi, so I knew about this already
have the original wonderswan and waiting for a game for it to come in the mail
If I can still find this in about 8 years time, I'll get it :D I'm going to be learning Japanese
I'll never understand Japan and their weird obsession with blood types :)
Nice little overview of the console.
I think I had played Digimon Frontier game with Wonder Swan some when, when I was a kid.
I have the colorless wonderswan with gumpey. Picked it up in local charity shop lol
Are there any emulators for the Wonderswan with ROMs that have English translation patches on them out yet?
There's wonderdroid...
Great video! You should also check out Engacho.
First time hearing about the wonderswan was translations for the final fantasy remakes before we got them.

where can i get one of these? xD (semi-serious tho, i am interested in being a collector and this seems awesome!)
