      @@yulog well, he did have health issues so I can understand that. Being diagnosed with terminal cancer can take a toll on a person in every way possible. As a cancer survivor myself, I think it's pretty amazing that while he was dealing with his illness, he still managed to get up on stage and entertain people. I know I wouldn't have been able to do anything like that and I didn't even have a terminal cancer diagnosis. Just having cancer and dealing with that in general knocked me flat on my ass.

    • @billie_vanilli
      @billie_vanilli 5 років тому +62

      @@torontolarrivee7965 That's not really what I'd call random. That's a skillfully sequenced act, designed to put the audience in one state of emotion, then completely catch them off guard and swing them all the way to the other end of the emotional spectrum when they realize he was fucking around the entire time. I mean complex is the wrong word, too. It's just different. Especially for it's time.
      So sure, it's absurd in the idea people hadn't really seen it before, but it doesn't seem random in any sense. That I'd associate more with things like non sequiturs...or stuff like Eric Andre does that's designed only to make the target uncomfortable (definitely an understatement) with no concern over bringing them back. I mean Andy makes you uncomfortable, but in a way that has a clear progression and weaves you back around. And a lot of people do find that funny.
      (And just to be clear to anyone who might take that the wrong way, Eric Andre's show is some of the most hilarious shit I've ever seen. I realize it might sound like I'm saying Andy's funny and Eric isn't).

    people hating on Kaufman. It's easy to respond to a heckler by being witty, you've got a mic, people listen to you and you've practiced that shit a million times. But taking the situation, turning it completely on its head, taking the power back, making it so that people don't even remember the heckle but get lost in his response and performance, that's the genius of it. But if everybody got his style, it would be generic crappy comedy made for the dumb masses. That's what genius is, understated, under rated.

    Hey guys! There's been some comments about 1 or 2 comedians not being funny but it's important to note that the title of the video is not 'Funny responses to hecklers'. The premise of this video and others is to show comics handling hecklers. Nevertheless, hopefully most if not all the responses are funny. ✌️

    kaufman invented trolling, anyone else that trolls should have to pay him a royalty fee, the man was a genius, and not just a comic genius but a master of psychological warfare, if he had wanted to im fully convinced he could have made a living like some people that are also masters of that by being a politician but he was smart enough to realize life is much more fun making people laugh instead of lying to them to get what you want from them.

    I grew up watching Steve Martin and thought he was the funniest most down to earth person, until I met him. I was at a food truck in New York and as I walked away he and what looked to be a body guard were walking toward me. It was not crowded or busy and he did not have fans swarming around. I didn't act like a crazed person and run up to him. As I passed by I calmly said Mr. Martin nice to meet you, I think you do great work. His response: The pleasure's all yours, now leave me the (expletive) alone. At that point I realized his true personality was the name of one of my favorite Martin movies, THE JERK!

    Andy Kaufman pushed the limits of what comedy meant. He made the crowd wonder whether his emotions were real or staged and put them in a position of awkward laughter. He constantly pulled the rug out from under them. Pure anti comedy. I think the man was a genius in the same league as Stewart Lee, subverting the idea of comedy. Genius.
