You're point is well taken, and correct. However, there is an aspect of the industry you've left untouched. I own a hybrid label (record label/artist), Harvest Media Company. I've been in business for 11 months, and released 12 commercial albums worldwide to date. My core profession is software engineering, starting a label is revisiting a childhood passion. I've been around for some time, I watched MTV's first video air. The music industry has not changed since the 50's. Artists still are left destitute by initial advances, minimal royalty payments, and poor career choices. How do you adapt to an industry where vinyl is obsolete, third-party distributors sign secret contractual agreements with the major digital distribution companies (Apple Music, Spotify Tidel, etc) to divide your royalty payments into fractions of a cent, and piracy is at it's highest levels? This is what I did: First, I formed a hybrid label so my company can function as both label and artist if required. I gave up streaming, the house always wins. Payment for the Right of Production, for content you own (artwork to music), is not being paid to the artist. The majors use your artwork for advertisement purposes in their business models, and you're not paid. Royalty payments are divided into fractional units of the lowest form of legal tender (review your statements, you'll see .0000001 or something similar)). I've moved my label to the cloud to merge technology (my core strength) with my business model, exploring other opportunities. Now, I provide live video on-demand streaming services, sell 30 second song snippets, and pitch licensing companies. I've begun selling my royalties from streaming, you can do this against a future release. I pitch a Record Label in China just this morning offering songs for placement. Artists/labels must break the cycle by forming platforms where they have complete control over their content. There isn't any other alternative in today's markets. If you scrutinize the major artists closely you'll see that music led them to other viable sources of income. They sell perfumes, clothing lines, alcohol, etc. Music alone wasn't providing a sustainable income. The artists of today will be the movie stars of tomorrow... if they're smart. I would urge all content owners (artists/labels) rethink their current strategies. Combine your resources (contacts, skill set, and funds) with other artists to form your own venues/platforms to engage your fan base. They'll still be there, but you won't if you don't reinvent your approach to being successful.

Millions of people are wrong, and not only when it comes to music on charts these days.
There’s also the aspect of approaching this idea in an organic and authentic way. If you’re an introvert by nature you don’t have to compromise your space by allowing fans into that space. There can be some intrigue there. Share what you’re comfortable sharing and let that be enough. Leave some holes for the fans to fill with theirs imagination. Let them wonder what your life is like and don’t always spoonfeed them.
Sure I’m just woke dude on the internet but I’ve always felt that artist could create these little microcosmic worlds with their art and music and that would always suck me in. Granted I’m a art and music nerd but I don’t think that everybody in the industry needs to have this same formula and expect it to come across authentically. Stay in the shadows and destroy mfrs live if that’s your vibe. They’ll remember you without watching you dig in your nose on tour. 😃

I've been involved with the music business for 14+ years so I know exactly what you are talking about. The downside is, these days, people are "making it" by looking good and having a lot of financial support to back them up while at the same time their musical talent is lacking (ok, so its not true with ALL musicians, but i've seen some that shouldn't attempt some of the things they are doing LOL)... It's not failing to move with the times if you aren't making it, it's usually because you don't look like a model and you haven't connected with the right people to help back you up at the financial end of things. not saying this to tell people to go beg for money, financial support is different in you have a backer (or silent partner) pushing you to be successful, and it doesn't necessarily have to be with finances but obviously for my example it is. And unfortunately looks matter too... otherwise people like Paris Hilton wouldn't be able to put out a song with 5 million views on youtube within 24 hrs of it being posted (okay, that example might be a bit dated, but you get the idea).
This statement is more accurate to the American music market as compared to maybe the music market in other countries, just a disclaimer.
a better example is probably Susan Boyle, she was extremely talented. But she was forced to change her appearance to make herself more "attractive" so she could be more marketable for audiences.

I strongly agree with this. On the classical side of things, it’s worse. Your music needs to be funded (patrons in a symphony setting) or it never gets heard/performed. I think what’s marketed is what we’ll listen to, especially if what’s marketed is incredibly convenient to access. Music on the radio is likely most popular because it’s the most convenient. We pick the first songs on the Spotify because it’s heavily marketed and convenient. And we all like and continue to stick with what we’re familiar with and probably don’t explore outside of that recommended list too often.
Not discrediting the talented artists who have hit records, but the money and marketing ultimately decide an artists/musicians success. For history’s time, it’s always been that way. But many independent artists have a greater opportunity for success now. Not guaranteed, but if you know how to market and connect with others, and you’re a good musician, you may do well.
But that’s my opinion.

Great video!! There is definitely A LOT of music out there and with so many things just being thrown out there on social media I think making that human connection is more important than ever. You could just be that weird person that just drops a song (or link to a song) on social media and says "Hey, listen to this!" (which I have been guilty of 😒), but you gotta offer people something and make them WANT to listen to your song. Creating and playing music has always been my stronger suit (though there's a always plenty room for improvement), I have always fallen short on the marketing side. Videos like these help me get back to reality and realize where I'm going wrong and guide me in the right direction. Appreciate you!!

I have tended to put up loads of songs mostly on youtube so far without putting much thought into it but watching your videos makes me see that the marketing side of things could actually be quite a fun, creative thing in itself rather than something to hide away from and not bother with.

This is straight facts! Go through your UA-cam music suggestions right now, and you will find song after song that "sound great". But the key is in actually being able to connect with people. Love your fans, respond to them and give them what they want, and they will supply you with attention, more attention, opportunity and revenue!

The thing about being constant is that i can't afford that many hours in a studio. Of course, i have my own home studio, but there are instruments that i need to record in a studio if i want quality. People will notice if my voice is recorded with my focusrite only. (i make rock music with a classic vibe, it needs to have that organic sound from a analog comp for example). That's the main problem i have myself, also my audience is not that big that i can success on a crowdfunding campaign. Anyway, thank you for this video, i watched some of these videos from your channel and there are so many good tips within them, i'll keep on trying! :)

It makes a lot of sense... if music is your business, you must consider all the aspects of a business, unless you specifically want a bad time... I'm still not really convinced its what I want to do honestly... Its too convenient not living like that atm, plus I still suck so...

I agree, you do need to be more than a musician in today’s world if you want to get successful. It shouldn’t have to be that way, but the industry has changed not just in terms of marketing but in terms of the content. Music is largely generational, and I feel like every generation hates every other generations music. Thing with me is, Most of the albums I like were either released 10-15 years before I was born or came along when I was too young to go to concerts. I feel like the market doesn’t respond well to rock musicians under 40. I can’t think of one that’s mainstream off the top of my head. The genre is slowly dying and as a 36 yo rock musician myself, that makes me a little bit glum considering the fact that I still to this day get a ton of enjoyment out of hearing and making that kind of music.

I've been saying this for years and surprised to hear it on this podcast! So much really great songs and its a paradox of choice for fans. Tastes are so wide and radio lost its pure influence.
hey Burstimo - you guys should make your own music app (like Spotify) and allow artists to stream on it, and actually pay the artists a more fair price than Spotify...If there are 40,000 releases each day - imagine how many people you could get on board - comon we can all agree Spotify should pay a bit more - and if your new platform paid even just a little more - then musicians would flock to it!! It could be a music release platform - for the Artists/ by the Artists - kind of like a Union for Musicians. And people could pay to contribute to the running of it - ie - if you are an artist - you could pay a fee of $10 per month, and it could be free for listeners (like Spotify does) with ads, and listeners would have option to pay for ad free listening. The whole theme of this would be - that this platform is FOR THE ARTIST and gives back more per stream. Have a think about it - as it could be huge!!

09:20 You say that ppl will chose the artist who's more available and communicates more often over the other artist. But what about the danger of oversaturating the audience? By becoming "too available" ppl might no longer appreciate and experience it as something special when the artist takes time out of his day to talk to them.
There's no such thing as being too available on social media!

But if you posted several videos daily on UA-cam, instagram and I'd receive daily emails from you and see your advertisement 50% of my time on Facebook, I'd start to feel overwhelmed.And I'd no longer get as excited as I'm now whenever you upload a new video and I'd no longer watch them all and probably fall behind. In the worst case I would unsubscribe from all of your accounts, if I felt "bombarded", or even block you to make the algorithms stop suggesting me new content from you.
Maybe the correlation is like a bell-shaped curve. Too little availability and engagement from your part doesn't even get me started to engage and build rapport with you, but too much of it makes me want to withdraw and escape.

i try to be as honest and serious. on one hand i agree totaly just putting music out there isnt enough if (insert goal) but on the other hand i state its enough to be good at making music when you are good enough people will come to you and ask you to do their music for them and im talking chart hits here. i have done this befor.. do you get famouts ? no .. do you get rich ? no .. do you get your music out there ? yes does anyone care .. no .. if its not you then its someone else. the industry if we wanna all it that trained the listener to listen to crap and im not just talking about this time its always the case. people try to do cheap quality and hope they get away with it .. its like a club constantly booking cheap djs after a while the audience doesnt expect wonders and is totaly used to those run in the mill playbutton djs. its the same with movies from like hollywood the same with if you are creating music. the competition will always be cheaper faster and people will be used to that .. just listen to the charts. madonn michael jackson beatles mozard they all were far away from beeing good musicians sure they knew a few tricks like a dog trained to sit and play catch. what does this mean ? .. well actualy absolutly nothing. no one cares about what I think ... the facts are people buy music that is free anyway people listen to bad music while there is good music available people dont care that was always the case and propably wont change any time soon so we might as well ask yourself if we wanna ride the wave that is available to (insert goal) .. or you dont give a shit and do your own thing. ive decided to do my own thing i will not promote any of my work. some is on different names so no one can actualy find out who i am. i just have this singular truth and rule for me ... i dont play the game i just create music until the day i die. chances are you already heard something i have created .. thats enough for me i dont need a face or money or even recognition ..i dont even care about if someone wants to listen to what i do i just do it and instead of watching what happens i just move on and create the next ... why ? .. because music is my goal nothing more nothing less.

McDonald's do not inherently produce nutritious food due to the mere fact that their "food" is consumed by the masses. Yes, they make billions in sales and don't seem to be slowing down, though their products remain unhealthy and cheap as their concern is not quality. They have two things going for their product; it's cheap and tasty, which plays into humanity's #1 weakness; greed. Both ways.
You don't pay $2 for a meal at a five-star restaurant, BECAUSE THE FOOD BLOWS YOUR MIND, but the masses do not understand the concept of appreciating food. Whatever's cheapest and tastes the best.
The question you should be asking is, "How to be like everyone else and sell your soul | Does the music matter to you?"
A hive-mind mentality, rather than a lack in capacity for thought is the reason why year after year, the same old three (or two) chords and hooks that were written by the same 48yo Swedish guy (Max Martin) for the past decade will make pop songs and artists rise to fame and dominate charts and sales.
Unfortunately, those same "stars" turn around and call what they do "art" and over time, people have begun to believe that it is. But, as with most things in 2019 (and beyond), it's really only DISPOSABLE. Five years from now, no one will give a fuck and those same artists will be struggling with drugs, the deepest depression any human can know and more financial woes than those guys who ran that Fyre festival.
So, girl in video; please don't pretend that the absolute SHIT that the masses consume is actually good music and that it "might just not be your taste" if you don't like it or don't want to sell yourself out to it. And "millions of people" CAN DEFINITELY be wrong. Just look at the state of our planet. Those "millions of people" sure as FUCK aren't infallible and perfect.
"The Most Talented Musicians" have gotten quite far, but on their own terms. Their definition of success just doesn't resemble yours or the masses'. Money and fame is great if that's all you care about, but your craft, art and health is going to suffer and you won't belong to yourself anymore. And those are only a few of the prices you pay. Sounds nice, eh?

You have to create HIGH QUALITY music! You have to release that high quality music EVERY WEEK! You have to be an EXPERT ON MARKETING! You have to work on your MARKETING EVERY DAY! You have to spend hours on social media EVERY DAY! And not just Instagram, I mean ALL OF THEM! UA-cam, Linkedin, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, Pornhub... yes, EVEN THE ONES THAT’S NOT EVEN OUT THERE YET!!! Sure... give me another 76 hours every day and I’m pretty sure I can make it.
It does seem overwhelming try to find people who will give you a hand. No you don't have to release a new tune every week. Who has that much quality material. Just relax don't panic. You don't have to spend every waking hour doing this. It's supposed to be fun. It's not to hard to post something fairly regularly. All any of us want is to leave our mark behind and regardless of how big a mark that is you have still succeeded. Do what you can do and let the chips fall where they may. Enjoy life. Good luck.
Always remember that many artists were not recognized for many years after their deaths. The goal is to leave some joy and entertainment behind for others to enjoy.

Is it then luck if your image is more ghostly like frank ocean who is so far out of the line light yet so famous? He’s an artist that I really look up to because of his privacy in life but openness in music
Majority of established artists aren't following this style though. Yes Frank Ocean is very mysterious and keeps out of the limelight but he is one of a small percentage that really succeeded with this method.
Every artist has a different style and image and that's how you'll get an audience, by portraying personality.
With Frank, I'd agree it was a bit of luck but he got his break by being a ghost writer, which got him in front of the right people, so with him you could say it was a mix of talent, knowing the right people, having a super cool image and working his ass off!

Must be a very nice fairytale you live in. Neither "culture" nor wishful and idealistic intentions control or determine what happens in the commercial music industry. Go do some digging. Michael Jackson. Lady Gaga. Justin Bieber. Britney Spears. Lindsey Lohan. Too many names to mention, but they all tell a story of what the music industry really looks like on the inside and you don't get in unless they let you in. And once they do, you belong to them.
The world isn't a nice place where everyone coexists in peace and work together for the betterment and benefit of humanity, let alone building nice, whimsical cultures in the music industry where everyone's successful and happy. You may choose to believe that, but it's a lie.
If you agree with the sentiment in this video, you aren't concerned with actually producing something that will move someone or that resembles art. Deep down, you're probably yearning more for the apparent "pleasures" and "luxuries" that come with fame.

I first heard of him from an Instagram ad. The reason I think he's successful is because that single was a banger. But then everything I've seen of his personality after is hilarious and endearing.
