The contrast between the voices she gives Peggy versus Maria is demonstration enough of her talent. Amazing.

My jaw dropped the first time I heard this song, for the reason you mention.
Legitimately when I first saw it my brain didn't even make the connection that they were the same person because the voice was so different.

What gets me with this one is the use of “helpless”. It’s skewing the word we’ve associated as romantic through the show because of Eliza. It’s such an interesting tactic that Lin uses: genius!

That "helpless" struck me too, since adulterers often say they found in their lover something they used to find in their marriage, but no longer did. Sometimes they blame their spouse for the lack, and therefore the cheating!
This! I always felt like it was a callback to Eliza's "Helpless."
It’s disgusting what Hamilton does here but it’s still kinda my favourite song in the musical? I live for the increasing desperation and panic and misplaced desire in Lin’s performance and Jasmine absolutely kills it with her voice. The body language in the staging is excellent.

I think people sometimes forget that you’re not supposed to be on Hamilton’s side at this point in the play? Like, yep, he’s an actual moron for victimizing Maria here and cheating in Eliza. The song is still a jam tho and both Lin and Jasmine really get across the tension in this scene.

She begged him. Then Mr. Reynolds begged him to continue seeing his wife and actually threatened to expose him if he didn't continue being with his wife- because she was terribly mean and depressed when he hadn't been with her. 🤯
It's definitely not like she didn't ask for it.
And he published the letters from both Mr & Mrs Reynolds so it's not just his telling of the story.

Then proceeds to take several breaks to cheat on his wife.
Uh...he never said he did NOT need a break, he said he had work to do! There is a difference...smh!
He couldn’t take a break, because of he did that 1.controdicts “non-stop” and 2. Because like he said “I lose my job if I don’t get my plan through Congress “

This is the kind of song you just hate to love, there's just something about the beat and Jazzy's voice, it's such a jam, the lyrics and the context can get ignored (except when your mom asks you why are you singing about having an affair so passionately in the shower)

Jasmine's voice is absolutely stunning. Her transition from Peggy to Maria is so effortless. Definitely an unsung voice in this show.
Her voice in this number is sultry butter. It just oozes lust and longing. Perfection.
A stellar performance by incredible people! Fun fact: when they're yelling over each other and Hamilton says "how could I do this?"... apparently the original lyric was "how could you do this?" Lin changed it because Hamilton is the hero/protagonist of the story and putting all the blame on her for the affair would have made it harder to us root for him. So he changed that one word to give Hamilton accountability and let him remain a more sympathetic character to the audience. It's the little details that makes Lin an incredible composer!
DO NOT STOP THE HAMILTON CONTENT. You're not alone, I have the same faces when I watch Hamilton. Nothing can top it.
She was so damn sultry it gave me chills. And the guy who played James Reynolds couldn’t have been more perfect - I love watching him!!!
Fun fact, He also played the schuyler sisters' dad and the doctor at the duels.
I love jasmine's first lines "I am so sorry to bother you at home."and the smooth way she swings her arms to the song that's very similar to a normal gesture. If that even makes sense. She has a beautiful contralto.
Lin made a comment once about JRB sitting in the front row, and Lin looked directly at him while he sang the "Nobody needs to know" line. Lin's little acknowledgements to songs and artists are such a delight - more so when Lin gets to point them out live to the artist. "Look! Look! That's you! That's the thing!"

The contrast between the 2 main actors singing yes and the company singing no is so clever... just showing the tension between right and wrong. Also yes that cello in the beginning 😍 and the key change is gorgeous too!

I adore this song and its such a crime that Jazzy only gets one verse and a couple of lines to herself. I want to hear so much more from her because it's like her voice is made for this song. Obviously her high belts are stunning but I am always so amazed at how she makes her low notes sound a) not boring when the line is stuck around a couple of notes and b) so effortlessly sexy. She was given the smallest chance to showcase her voice (when compared to Angelica and Eliza) but she pulled it off flawlessly.
I remember when I watched this on Disney+ for the first time )and I had listened to the soundtrack enough to know everything off by heart and seen the London show) but I hadn’t noticed how great James Reynolds is the actor completely nails that character for the brief time he’s playing him

We're studying Hamilton in my English class and we watched Say No To This the other day. I just looked at everyone else's faces during the scene, and I saw multiple jaw drops and people just on the edge of their desks, desperate to see what Hamilton does with Maria and what decisions he makes. I've never seen people that interested in an English class before!
_Hamilton_ the musical, lyrically, had some fans misinterpret things here. The problem with the line of, "She looks so helpless" and "her body's saying hell yes" I've seen many people have is that Maria Reynolds encourages the cheating, so the confusion can be that he took advantage of her when the song shows and says she actually encourages him and took advantage of him. I've also seen people who assume James Reynold's abuses her based on the way she begs after James gives Hamilton the letter. While that part could be true, although unconfirmed, it is no reason to ruin his life. Those reasons and more are why situations like this are so messed up.
Originally I didn't acknowledge it was Jasmine Cephas Jones because Peggy sang so little and was on stage so little without any moment directed at her. I think it took me three viewings to realize it was the same actress. Unfortunately I didn't jump on the _Hamilton_ bandwagon until it was on Disney+
The last part was literally me who had no obsession or care for Hamilton until Disney+. Only song I was obsessed with was Schuyler sisters
He did NOT take advantage of her!!! She came to his home at night, she asked him to walk her home, she opened her legs. You need to stop! You have ISSUES and that is what you need to address! Seek help...

Please reread the comment if you think I said that (I have rewrote anything confusing, but not changed my opinion of Maria Reynolds taking advantage of Hamilton) because I think you may have unintentionally did the same thing the people I mentioned above did. What I said was that the reason other people think he takes advantage is because the song can be hard to interpret for fans who only have loosely listened, or fans have misinterpreted what happened (such as how you read my comment). I personally know how it actually happened in the play and in history/real life itself. Sorry. I thought it had been clear, but apparently, just like some people with the song, it was a comment just vague enough for misinterpretation and confusion.

No worries about your expression while watching Hamilton songs. I never tire of this music. Maybe due to the current political climate I’m moved even more at Lin-Manuel Miranda’s talent showing events on the birth of our fragile democracy through a new lens. Keep showing these songs.

My daughters LOVE the Hamilton soundtrack, and a few weeks ago, I was sitting and working on building a LEGO farm with our 6 year-old. As she's concentrating on building a park for her animals, she's singing (to-herself) "Lorrrrd, how am I gonna say nooo to this" LOL. I had to stifle laughter, because if he she heard me then she'd force me to explain what is so funny and 'why' !
These kind of songs extra funny to me when you have all those lovey dovey scenes where they are close together and looking eacht in the eyes and stuff. But it looks so soft and romantic but they are belting their heads of so basically screaming into each other's faces because that is so loud 😂
Love her flip from perky Peggy to the sexy Mrs. Reynolds. I'd love to see a reaction to Cynthia Erivo singing You Will Be Found at the Elsie Fest. I know you'd LOVE her energy. I found it on UA-cam one day and was wowed.

Also I subscribed just for the Hamilton content, so... :D (then found the Les Mis content) I'd love to see reaction videos for some of the less vocal solo moments like the cabinet battle(s) or Hurricane (the staging OMG), or the Reynolds Pamphlet would be super fun!

Yep, it is an ‘icky’ topic on many parts. According to the book, there is a common belief that Maria’s husband forced her to seduce Hamilton in order to blackmail him. If only he had said no to this.

Linn wrote in his book that Hamilton's "Achilles Heel" was a damsel in distress, stemming from his mother dying in front of him when he was a boy. We see this several times in the show. With Eliza: "As long as I'm alive Eliza, you'll never have to feel so HELPLESS." In this scene, it's like Peggy is exploiting his weakness, vocalizing repeatedly how helpless she is...interesting!
This is the first time I've seen this song performed by someone other than Catherine Ryan and wow.

The duet between the two are amazing, and the scene is downright sultry to see such an arrangement of emotions and passion in both of their faces in this song.
