    Thinking about the distortion effects, am I right in thinking that the vanishing points have to be equidistant from the drawing’s centre to keep figures drawn from either VP in the same scale ?

      Thank you for your your interesting question and comment . In either case where the vanishing points are at a good distance apart or they're too close it doesn't matter where you place the image. The outcome will still be the same. In the case of the VPs being too close the shape will simply be distorted in a different way. I hope I've answered your question. Feel free to comment further.

      Why not experiment. Place a dot anywhere between two (too close) VPs and see the result. No need to draw cubes just use rectangles you'll stills the result.
