Great Tutorial,Thankyou😊
Thank you for your comment @purplewarriors3333 it means a lot
Wow, the artist you’ve chosen are just a treat. Tonal values really bring the drawing to life by adding mystery and contrasts. I also noticed these artist were not afraid of black. Thank you for our new assignment and sharing your love of drawing, Lindsay
Nice draw
Thank you foe your nice comment @Dhika it means a lot
I'll try. I'm just starting to learn to draw.
Thank you for your reply, Good on you just keep trying you will get there and you will succeed. Try try again!
this is lovely.
Thank you for your nice comment. It's very encouraging
Hi viewer, If you like feel free to share the project either in the comments section here or my Facebook channel. I'd love to see your work. And thank you for watching
Challenge accepted! But very nervous about revealing my work 🫢.
Hi Lindsay, Thank you for your reply. As an art teacher let me just say that there is no nicer feeling than to have an influence on a student's improvement in their art. That's how I know I'm getting it right. My dream is that when my channel grows a bit more That we can have a community where we can share our work and help each other. When you are ready you can show me some of your work. (several examples would be good) Don't be nervous, it's not a competition.
Hi Lindsay, I just received an email from Lindsay Weirich. I wanted to confirm is that you? Please let me know as I'd love to know how you are progressing in your art.
This tutorial is incredibly helpful Mr. Coxon. You are taking the fear out of starting a drawing with practical guidelines and locating shapes within your model. I really liked the idea of drawing the model first then adding a different background that explains your story. Thank you also for painting this tutorial, Lindsay
Thank you for your helpful comment Lindsay. I'll be making more of this kind of lesson where we look at the various reference points and landmarks on the figure. Keep up your practice, persistence and patience!
Learn the Basics of figure drawing with this simple grid system. I'll introduce some gentle colour towards the end.
I enjoy your instruction Thanks for posting them
Thank you lilybay. It means a lot
❤
Thanks for that it means a lot
Such an interesting introduction, you have a remarkable history in art. Like so many of us you had discouraging times and also some magical times. Thank you for a great channel, may I also add a beautiful wife.
Thank you Lindsay. I thought I'd start to include some elements of "my story" I was very lucky that day I saw the painting when I was 12. It gave me direction, But some people don't find their purpose. I hope I can Inspire them that "it's never too late to find and follow your dream". WE've been married for 45 years and I am grateful every day. Thank you.
I do love the stick figures more than jumping into a finished figure that I find is not placed correctly or the figure is too large or small. Erasing a stick figure is less “ painful “. This is a wonderful tutorial Mr. Coxon.
Thank you for your comment Lindsay. The beauty of drawing stick figures it's almost like scribbling. It keeps you loose. It's a bit like when you are learning to drive you're all over the place and stiff. But later driving is easy. That's how your drawing will become, free and loose.
Hi There viewer, This is an introduction to my Channel. In here you'll find many lessons about how to draw and paint. These lessons will be helpful to beginners and intermediate level artists.
Thanks for It.
Many thanks for your comment
great video
Thanks for your comment @benzene_sandwhich
Yes Mr. Coxon, I really like this tutorial. My personal goal in following your instructions is to be capable of capturing the human face and turn that face at any angle. This was lovely to watch and learn from, many thanks. Lindsay
Thank you for your comment Lindsay. I'll keep working to make video lessons which I hope are helpful and valuable.
Hi there Lindsay. Please accept my apology the Intro video you commented on was the wrong video. I uploaded it by mistake. I'm sorry for that. I'm still trying to get used to this UA-cam thing (I'm a bit analog!) The proper video is now up if you want to check it out.
Thank you so much
Thank you Ganapathym ( I hope I got that right) for your comment. I will make further video lessons on how to draw the head at any angle. At the moment I'm working on drawing the same figure from different viewpoints
@@michaelcoxontokyo Very helpful for me for 3D modeling. Thank you for giving heed to my plead.
We are here whenever you post! Thanks
Thanks for your warm and encouraging comment. I'll try my best
Hi there @lilybay, I'm not sure if you saw my "Channel Intro" video the other day. It was the wrong video, I uploaded it by mistake . Deleted it as soon as I saw my error. The Correct video is now uploaded. Thanks
Hi Viewer, Sorry for being bit late with this lesson. I usually publish by Friday
Hoping the channel will continue presenting initial introduction to figure drawing. This will allow your followers a great foundation upon which to grow their practice. I know I need slow basic info to ensure my technique is correct. I’m particularly interested in figure drawing and landscapes
Thank you for your helpful comment. I will continue to make video lessons about figure drawing. At the moment I am in the process of making a fifteen part series "Back to Basics: Drawing for Beginners" this will include lessons on anatomy, figures and faces, and hands and feet, as well as all basic drawing topics including perspective and landscape. I was a High school and technical college art teacher before I came to live in Japan. I'll do my best to help you.
Hi lilybay 1, Just letting you know I haven't forgotten you. I will try my best to get those lessons about figure drawing and landscape up as soon as I can. In the meantime keep drawing!
Help me to draw front and profile side of a portrait from a single reference Picture which is very essential for my 3D modeling
Thank you for your comment. I'm publishing Lesson 2 of this "Back to Basics" tomorrowIn lessons 11, 12, and 13 I'll be covering Human anatomy including figure, head including features, hands and feet, and drapery (clothing). Because you've made a request I'll do my best to make a supplementary lesson on the head (front and profile). I'll try for the weekend. In the mean time keep drawing. Practice makes perfect!
@@michaelcoxontokyo thank you for the reply
@@michaelcoxontokyo Oh Nice Thank you for considering my request
In this lesson I will give you Lots of useful tips including getting the pose right by finding the line of action. Please enjoy. Check out the first of my new series Back to Basics How to Draw For Beginners
Hi viewer, check out this lesson about some of the basic materials you'll need to begin Your art career. This is Lemon 1 of my back to Basics How to Draw for beginners series. I hope you find it helps you.
Sorry That's "Lesson 1"
Hi ganapathym, Sorry I haven't completed the video yet, I'll do my best to post it by the weekend
This was a very thoughtful tutorial and I believe I’ll need to watch it a few more times. By having the girl looking back towards me I did feel drawn into the girls story and wondered if she was going to change her mine and stay on the upper floor. I hope this was how you intended the viewer to feel and I haven’t missed the mark completely. Thank you Mr. Coxon for today’s tutorial.
Thank you for your comment. I'm so happy that you were able to identify with the girl. Did you feel that there is a sense of hesitation in her expression. Wow! that shows me that you thought about her , That you projected yourself into the story. Your comments are so helpful and give me the energy to keep doing this. I'm going to do a series on back to basics drawing for complete beginners. Really fundamental subject matter but I'll be interested in your opinion and any advice you might have.
Thank you for today’s lesson Mr.Coxon and wow! What a difference shading makes when you can locate the heads plane’s and shade according to the light source. Your sketch came to life in only a few minutes. I believe I will order Andrew Loomis’s books as you refer to his measurements often. This was a very exciting lesson, thank you, Lindsay
Thank you for your warm comment Lindsay. Todays lesson is an introduction to plane breaks. I'll make more in depth lessons soon. Regarding Andrew Loomis. One of his books "Successful Drawing" 1951 Titan Books is very good. It covers The Fundamentals, Perspective (maybe a bit lengthy but thorough), and light. It might be a good book to start with. happy reading!
Thank you, Mr. Coxon, for choosing this gorgeous woman as our model today. She would be intimidating for a new sketch student as myself but as you have broken the process down, not so intimidating. I reviewed your last post on form yesterday and found it to be very helpful. May I ask if you would elaborate on the plains of the face one day. Thank you for teaching Sketching on line, my home is in the USA so this is a great opportunity for me. All the best, Lindsay
Thank you for your comment Lindsay. Yes, I will be making a video about the planes of the face thank you for requesting. As I said in the video every subject is a challenge for the artist. In this case, how to get the mass, the form, and the pattern of the model's beautiful hair. I started to get it when I went into right brain mode. It's hard to explain but you kind of forget about the anxieties (intimidation) and just "fall in". I would have loved to have spent a couple of hours on this but the video would have been way too long. Cheers, and just keep drawing!
Mr. Coxon this was so enjoyable to watch and learn from. I am beginning to feel more confident that with practice and patience I can improve my sketching. There were so many helpful techniques, I’ll be watching this lesson over and over again. I am so grateful for these tutorials, you are so talented and generous with your time. Thank you again, Lindsay
Thank you for your encouraging comment Lindsay, It's my absolute pleasure to help art students like you to improve in their work. Please feel free to post some of your work on my Facebook or Instagram accounts if you like earlier work and more recent. I'd love to see how you are progressing. Bye for now.
I am so delighted that the cone became a nose, a harder feature for me to get right. I can certainly appreciate your four shapes now, the human face and body are my poor drawing skills. I have a lifetime of gardening and drawing from my garden is less intimidating for me. So I am thrilled Mr. Coxon to have found you and appreciate your unique teaching skills. Thank you again for sharing your time and talents, Lindsay
Thanks for your comment Lindsay. It was hard at first coming up with a cone as part of the human body then suddenly it hit me. Why not the nose? I think the secret to drawing the nose front on is to make the lighting come from the side. Also, don't be too preoccupied with nostrils just suggest them.
Thank you!
Thank you for your comment Gene. it's encouraging.
This lesson is part of my series about the four basic shapes in both the natural and the manufactured world. When we simplify everything in the world around us to a cube a sphere, a cylinder and a cone our observation skills improve and as a result our drawing vastly improves too. Happy drawing everyone.
Merci beaucoup!!
Avec plaisir
Hello, Let me first apologize for using a bit too much time lapse. The video would have been too long. I'll try to not use much in following videos. Promise🙂
Mr. Coxon you made drawing these figures look so easy but I’ve taken your advice to heart, practice, practice, practice. I now have 32 of your tutorials recorded in my jumbo drawing pad. One thing you said today that will be helpful for me was to try and put yourself in the same pose to see if it works properly. Thank you once again, Lindsay
@@thelavenderlatch Thank you Lindsay for your comment. Wow! 32 of my tutorials! You're such a dedicated art student. Keep it up. With students like you I'm inspired to keep improving my video lessons.
Nice channel, keep it up :)
Thank you for your very encouraging comment.
Wow! your channel is amazing.
@@michaelcoxontokyo Appreciate it alot !
I really enjoyed today’s lesson Mr. Coxon. I was working on a larger bird in flight this morning and was frustrated with its barrel chest because of the curves involved. I wanted to show its varied shapes but it became lopsided. I’m back to my drawing and I believe today’s lesson will be very useful. Thank you for your tutorials, I am very grateful.
Thank you for your comment Lindsay. The whole point about "basic Shapes" is that what ever we look at in our environment can truly be simplified, The problem with your lopsided bird can sometimes be solved by putting a square around it (like a cardboard view finder) over the image, raise it up and down slowly, it might help you to see the image in a new way. Happy drawing.
Lovely, you made a circle into a piece of art. A lot of good information to go with sketching terminology. A good concept for me to remember is the light and dark accent which can apply to painting also. Thank you once more Mr. Coxon, Lindsay
Thank you Lindsay for your, as always, informative and helpful comment. Your comments, and others, are helping me to design my channel. Sometimes us art teachers need to be reminded about what the student needs. For example, your reference to light and dark accent is very helpful.

Another very helpful lesson Mr. Coxon. I really appreciate the simplicity of seeing letters or shapes while duplicating a subject and that wonderful grid. I am learning with every lesson and I can easily grasp what you are telling us because you teach at a pace that I can follow. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of drawing.
Hi Lindsay, Thank you for your excellent comment. It's very helpful to me. The human figure is so subtle and complex that we have to find ways to simplify it. Using letters of the alphabet and many other ways of simplifying the form and shape of not just the figure but all subject matter (a tree, a horse etc.) is a way to "get our heads around" the subject. That's what I'm getting at with my Basic Shapes series. Bye for now. Keep working!
Great video! For me it's always difficult to ceep the right proportions in poses
Thank you for your comment Felix. It's great to hear what people want advice about. I'll make more videos on getting the proportions right. There are many techniques on this topic.
I m learning so much with these tutorials
Hi Fabienne, Thank you for your comment. I'm very happy to hear that my lesson is helping you. The magic ingredient to become an artist is really quite simple "Love" and "Dedication". Draw every day!
Thanks
Thank you, I hope you got something from it. This is part of series I'making about "Basic Shapes and Form.
This looks like so much fun. Using the horizon line off paper makes such a difference and I can see how this will be invaluable when stacking boxes at different angels. This is great, thank you Mr. Coxon.
Thank you for the very helpful comment Lindsay. Mastering perspective is easy Time and Practice. Ernest R. Norling Perspective made easy (Dover) is an excellent book for starters.Bye for now
This was a lovely little study and my first lesson on the drape of fabrics. Thank you
Thank you Lindsay for your comment. I'm working very hard to get this channel fully operational for you guys. I'll make a lesson soon about those four basic shapes I mentioned the other day. I like to plan carefully in order to give you a comprehensive lesson
Well all I can say is you have made me a believer, Mr. Coxon. The grid has changed my drawing skills and given me the courage to draw difficult subjects. I also appreciate your choice of subjects which make learning fun. I’ll see you time, Lindsay
Hi Lindsay, Eventually the grid and all the other techniques of drawing and painting will become second nature and instinctive. You will be able to look at any subject and confidently be able to draw it. Regarding "difficult" subjects just simplify them There are four basic shapes I'll make a lesson about that soon. Happy drawing and practice every day., Michael
Ajá, tenés razón, te quedo muy bueno a color! Saludos! 🙂👍
Thank you Dani. Great to read your comment. Saludos!
So very helpful. I have been drawing faces for most of the past week trying to come up with a formula that would fit any face. Today’s video gave me the formula, thank you. Can I use your same formula for men and children ? Your tutorials have been so easy to follow, I know my drawings are improving every week. See you next time, Lindsay
Hi Lindsay, I'm glad it was helpful to you. I will post more videos on drawing faces (Lots more!) Faces from every angle, adult, teens and children, male and female. The position of the eyes is very important for determining age. I'll make a video about that soon. This video was about a basic face. I am always fascinated by the fact that faces are all quite similar and yet we are all different. Likeness comes from the overall shape not the particulars of the eyes mouth etc. That's why you can instantly see your friend at night way in the distance, Nature is amazing. A new born giraffe or zebra can instantly recognize it's mother's particular pattern. Bye for now, Michael
Thank you for answering my comment, I am very excited to hear your plans for future tutorials. All the best, Lindsay
