Answering these questions made me realize how much I really don't think about my hair, and then I started thinking about how because of the nature of my career and work -- not having to think about my hair is a luxury. I think I might talk about that in another video. Lemme know if you would find that interesting or nah...
"You're already Black!" Yes, that is the truth. It's the expression of blackness that makes people uncomfortable, not really the locs themselves. I really love that statement Hallease.
@@hallease It's both funny and an aha moment. A gentle reminder as to how much of how we are perceived is already not up to us, so you may as well go for it and be who you are. You're getting judged regardless.
Girl you were one of the main reason why I started my locs. I didn't know they were a thing and my frugal immma do it yourself self was like " I can do it myself." Seriously best decision ever. They have honestly made me grow into the person I am and learn to accept myself for who I am without the need to hide underneath things.
I squealed at the photo of you at four! . . . I could not be a loose natural. I transitioned for almost 2 years and when I BCed I was enamored with my fros and twist outs for three weeks TO THE DAY when I said, "Oh, hell naw!" I just caaan't with all the maintenance! (Side note: I'm from Jamaica, born and raised. One of the things I love about having locs - mi nah guh lie - is when people compliment me by calling me "Empress". Mi love it! 🙈)
We have similar stories, except I transitioned from relaxer for about 1yr and I just couldn't be bother with the loose natural regiments. One day I just got up out of the blue and started my locs. It's been 2yrs since and I'm not looking back. I live in Toronto, and the first time I got an "Empress" greeting, I was elated. I bragged to all my friends. 🤣🤣
@@sue-elle7886 That loose natural life is just tew much! LOL! I'd love to visit Toronto one of these days; it is a Caribbean city, after all. Walk good, empress!
You're already black! I love that! If someone isn't gonna like me because of my hair they probably didn't like me because of my skin. I literally got sisterlocks saying I can't live my life concerned about how I am perceived by white ppl. This was a revelation for me wow 😊
You’re already Black! That’s what I thought when I started my locs last month!🤣🤣🤣 I work in the medical field on the business professional side and after being natural 7 years, man I wanted my locs. There are people who have been giving me “the look” after not seeing the huge fro, twist out or puff, but it’s my head and like you said, my work speaks for me, not what’s growing out my scalp.
As a darksinned woman with long braids it was so validating to hear you talk about the assumptions people make about you. My boyfriend's family somehow got the "impression" that I'm West Indian and my entire family is from Alabama. They SWEAR I told them I was. Assumptions are so strange.
Thank you for this. I just did a big chop and know that tomorrow at work, I'm going to struggle with people liking it. In reality, it doesn't matter. As long as I like it (which I do!)
Was already planning to start locs. Growing out my hair to get them started. Thanks for sharing - this just reaffirmed that I’ve made the right hair decision for me! Cant wait!
Have you done a video on your personal clothing style? How you describe your personal clothing style? You always seem very chic and classic This video was great
I'm starting to semi freeform. I'm 6 months locked. I wash at will, deep condition often & moisture is my bff. I have to separate daily but love frizz. Cover at night & pick all lint I find. Just listening to my locs, not everyone but learn from my journey.
Hello. I enjoyed your video and can relate to much of what you have said. I too have locs, but they are not semi free form. I twist mine. However I don't twist them every time I wash them. Like you, I don't like to have to think about my hair. And like you, the less I do to my hair and scalp, the healthier they are. The thought of cutting my locs gives me a small sense of anxiety because then I would have to think about how to style my hair every day. :-) I also at one time use to have so many scalp issues. Change in weather, pollen, ingredients in shampoo would just irritate my scalp. Now I use Dr Woods Baby Mild Castile Soup. I don't think I will ever change. Once I find a product that works, I am not changing. No more worrying about shampoo. For conditioner I have a small spray bottle that I use, half rose water and half jojoba oil. Shake it up and spray. I am good after that. Its soo freeing. Love it. My locs haven't hindered my career either. Thank you for the video.
I feel the less you think about taking neat care of locs, the better they look. I color mine but retwists every 2 months. In between , I'm not doing much
Had my locs in for 5 years until i cut it 2 yrs ago because of pressure at work. One thing i would do different is the frequency of retwisting. It really messed with the strength of my locs. Lesson learnt for next time.
I needed this, have been on my first loc journey for 9 months, and i haven´t interlocked or anything. I was kind of insecure about that. Thanks for tking that of my chest.
Great video! Look into Dolly locks shampoo, it’s a bit pricey but they have so many different organic variations that will help for your hair type. I am embarking on my semi free form journey! I’ve had my hair locked for 5 years this November...can’t wait to see what they look like with no maintenance!
I started following you when you had your 1st set. I loved the thickness and this set is equally beautiful. I'm on my third and final set and I'm loving them. I don't see myself without locs. Do you prefer your 1st or current set of locs?
I definitely prefer my current set but I'm probably going to let a few more of them combine because I liked the number of locs in the first set which was closer to 116 I think
@@hallease like you, my 1st set of locs were thicker and with this set they're smaller. I went with smaller ones because my hair is a softer and finer texture so I wanted the fullness of smaller ones. They're finally coming along after almost a year though some of the front ones are taking forever to loc.
Your locs look so beautiful. I have been wearing faux locs a lot lately, and they look SO NATURAL. I'm getting all of the looks from the loc'ed brothas, asking, "Your hair! It's beautiful! How long have you been budding??" And I'm like....uhhhhhh. But I have been thinking about loc'ing my hair for real. My only thing is.... I also like wearing my natural coil pattern and wearing it straight as well. It's a dilemma.
Love your videos! I have a question that no one has ever asked/addressed in anything I've watched or read. Towards the beginning of your video you wrap that one patch or loose hair around your loc. I have that same problem but it's all across the front of my head. I've been locd for a little over 2 years and the more time that goes by the worse it gets. I wash my hair once a week and basically do 2 strand twists with the loose hair and another loc. If it helps to answer, I started with 2 strand twists, semi freeform, have 4a type hair, and have 76 locs. Any help is appreciated 😊
Lmbo! Yeaa I made those presumptions about you when I first started watching ur videos... I thought u were vegan and a naturalist and all that good stuff hahaa 😂🤦🏾♀️
How do you keep your locs from going flat? I started my locs by palm rolling but found my hair texture too soft so switched interlocking. But now I am semi-free form but the roots are locking flat.
I wish I could do semi free from but it won’t work I have microlocs they might break if I go more then 3 months without interlocking even 3 months is pushing it I try not to go pass 2 months I am thinking about combing some in the near future
For acting, you said you would shave your head to be able to portray more characters. You reasoning involved the concept of locs as a statement or a journey of self-expression which an play or movie character may not be experiencing. But when I think of actresses such as Julia Roberts or Diane Lane, I don’t recall them shaving their head to play a character. Why should a head of locs be treated differently from any other head full of hair ?
But they've all had to do things to their hair for a role (dye it, cut it, alter it). Locs, I feel, can't be easily manipulated. So for me, I feel, the equivalent would be shaving so I can be a blank slate. Similarly, it's one of the reasons I also hesitate to get any tattoos
Hallease In “Ghosts of Mississippi” and “Corinna Corinna,” Whoopi Goldberg wore wigs to cover her locs for the part. I can think of only three actresses who shaved their heads but that is because the role required them to do so. Demi Moore in “G.I. Jane,” and Judith Light and Cynthia Nixon in “Wit” where the main character is battling ovarian cancer. I can see where an actress would cut or dye their hair for a role. And of course wear wigs. But completely shaven ?!?Demi more said she regretted shaving her head for GI Jane and wouldn’t do it again due to scalp issues. Anyway, I think that if you really want to be a “tabula rasa” or blank slate, you must do that from the inside out, not the outside in. Best wishes. 🙏
