  • This is The 11/26/1966 Notre Dame at USC game. It is a Black and White Film with Radio Audio. Mike Walden and Bill Symmes call the game on The USC Network. More than one member of The USC Camp felt that Ara Parseghian ran up the score in an attempt to win The National Championship. He did and for the most part paid for it the rest of his career at ND. I do believe, despite the tie with Michigan State, that Notre Dame was the best team in 1966. Alabama had an excellent argument. If the AP and UPI Polls had voted after the Bowls Alabama might have slipped by Notre Dame but they didn't at the time. I claim no rights to The Film or The Audio but I did author this combination.

Total Domination by the soon to be National Champions. No phantom holding calls to bail out usc. Go Irish!!

Yep, the ‘66 Irish and the motto “Tie one for the Gipper.” Parseghian was arrogant enough to know a tie vs. Michigan State would still win him a National Championship if he beat SC, even though Ken Stabler led Alabama to an unblemished record. It’s OK, because in ‘67 USC won the National Championship and beat Notre Dame along the way in South Bend. After ‘66 Ara went 1-5-2 against McKay.
Lastly, listen to Cleveland Gary if you want to know about a blown call in a Notre Dame game.

In 1964, they had an all-Pac-8 officiating crew instead of a split crew. You can thank Hugh Devore for that. He agreed to that a year earlier. Naturally, they were going to help their hometown Trojans any way they could.

This same USC team played in the Rose Bowl weeks later with 11 players off the roster due to injury, illness or ineligibility. Their opponent was Purdue, with Bob Griese, LeRoy Keys and a great defense. After this 55-0 loss and the depleted Trojan roster, Purdue was favored by about 25 points, but squeezed out a 1-point win, with great clutch defense.

Your title is wrong. Notre Dame played AT USC, in the Coliseum. That's what made the shellacking even more impressive.

Ara Parseghian. What a coach. Strange thing in this series is the problem USC had beating Notre Dame in the 80s even when Notre Dame had a losing season in 86. And what about the green jersey game in 77?

The Green Jersey game was the only win for Dan Devine over the Trojans. I went to UConn and would always yell, "How's Notre Dame doing?" whenever they would announce football scores. Well, on the day of that game, they finally announced a ND score. When I heard it was 22-7 at the half, I let out a mighty cheer.

Two of ND's touchdowns came on pick-sixes. Take them away and it's 37-0. I vaguely remember watching this game in South Bend. The only part I vividly recall is when the score reached 44-0. It still stands as the worst defeat in Trojan history in terms of point margin. Even though the end zone bleachers were removed for the USC-UCLA game as well as this one, the field was not shifted over. The same thing happened when Super Bowl I was played a month and a half later.

I liked Parseghian a lot, though I didn't care much for ND. I hated to see his 1974 lose to USC in one of the greatest collapses in college football history. That second half was absolutely brutal.

They were pretty beat up, too. Coley O'Brien started the only game of his career at QB (he switched to halfback in '68) and made the most of it - 21 of 31 for 255 yards and three touchdowns. Bleier and Gladieux were out, so Dan Harshman was moved from defensive back to halfback.

Ara: "I didn't run up the score. But what am I supposed to do, tell my players to lay down and play dead?" Yeah, you did the week before at Mich State....and you weren't even winning that game.

That is total bs. Michigan State is the one who chose to punt on 4th down near midfield and less than three minutes to play. ND was running plays and gaining yards in an effort to get in FG range when they had a disastrous play that lost big yardage. Hanratty went out in the first quarter with a separated shoulder and they had a little used diabetic back up who was dehydrated at half time and got sick. The rules were what they were. What was he supposed to do, run a risky play and maybe throw away the season? Michigan State couldn't beat a diabetic back up on their own field and didn't deserve to be #1. Also ND missed every make able FG late in the game. Also ND if I'm not mistaken was missing Nick Eddy for the whole game, a key part of the offense.

@@rodmiller6872 Joe Azzaro's game-winning attempt barely missed to the right. The ball was right in the middle of the field and Azzaro hit it squarely. When it left his foot, the ball was sailing straight and true, but the swirling wind just blew it off course.

@@8avexp "Every" was a typo, I meant they missed just the one. Yes, very unfortunate that it barely missed. Ara had bad luck in '68 and '69 with missed FGs against USC. Two ties that easily could have been and should have been wins. Those three FGs would have changed Ara's legacy dramatically. To say nothing of gut wrenching losses to USC in '64 and '70 when ND should have won both times. Bobby Bowden had Miami and "wide right." Ara had USC and Purdue.

    • @8avexp

@@rodmiller6872 Missed field goals were a factor in all four ties under Ara. Against Miami in 1965, Ken Ivan missed two attempts that could have won the game. Poor Scott Hempel missed two against USC in '68 (the second being very late in the game) and one in '69 that hit the crossbar and bounced back. Ara managed to finish 6-5 against Purdue, but got upset, 31-20 in '74 by his close buddy, Alex Agase.

@@8avexp Ara was right in the thick of the championship every year except maybe two. Field goals definitely were part of it. Back to back fumbles and rain killed them against USC in 1970. 5 Hanratty INTs killed them in 1967. Cotton Speier's shoe string catch that I still say hit the ground. Blowing a 17-0 halftime lead against USC. Always something. I believe a playoff would have helped Ara lots in some of those seasons.
