I heard that when Jim Marshall of the Minnesota Vikings did the same thing, Roy sent him a message of encouragement.

Only difference is, no one calls Jim Marshall "Wrong Way" Marshall. The alliteration just isn't the same.

i love that absolutely nobody, even serious historians, can take the fact that “boner” was a slang term back then seriously

'Pulling a boner'...any guy who denies it is lying!

You know that what he did on the football field becomes legendary when the Reverend Billy Graham uses that moment in five or possibly six crusades as the example. The example being that you can feel sincerely right but be sincerely wrong.....

On the 30th anniversary, he appeared on the game show “I’ve Got a Secret” where the panel had to guess what his past story was. That showed that Roy was over the stigma.

Nice video John! Reigels was a great guy all told. I first heard of his wrong way run on the old game show “The Sports Challenge”, hosted by Dick Enberg. I’m sure you remember that show. Funny thing is when did USC ever turn down a Rose Bowl! 😂 like a fox turning down a chicken leg!

There was a really good early sound film which began with that mistake and the poor hero goes and joins the Marines becoming an heroic aviator.

A good change of pace after the Dennys Clark story.

I don't think I could ever think that to be the worst, because I've seen it happen to others. The only difference is that he was more successful at it, getting all the way to the goal line, while most wrong-way runners get tackled before they make it a long way or get straightened out. It's just a good thing his teammate's physically turning him around wasn't penalized as helping the runner, which would've caused a safety right then and there. I think the referee ruled correctly on the spirit of the rule, which did not contemplate such a situation.

The guy who chased him down was almost as big a bone-head as Riegels. Why did he "call for the ball?" If the Riegels thought he was going the right way and was near the goal line with no one in front of him, he'd have no reason to give the ball to a team mate. Just yell "You're going the wrong way!"
