- Let me take you on a full tour and test drive in the New SCANIA R 540. This is the latest addition to the 13 litre 6 cylinder diesel line-up with 2,700 Nm.
So the question is with the R 540 & R 520 V8 now both having the same torque output, would you still pay the extra money for the heavier V8?
There are now five 13 litre diesel engines to choose from, 370hp, 410hp, 450hp, 500hp, 540hp.
There's also Gas, Ethanol, HVO ( Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) & Bio-Diesel options available using the 13 litre 6 cylinder engine.

I like trucks a lot, but know nothing much about them. Except for watching your videos now appreciate Scania probably make the best trucks.
I don't drive, but spent many years doing security at glass factory.
They had contractor distribution locally with R 480. but deliveries from Europe with R500 v8 ( and occasional Iveco 500 ) and even at 2am in the middle of the city could always hear a Scania miles off!
I'd take that inline 6 cylinder any day. I've always been a bit hesitant with the V8's. Not that they're bad but here in Zimbabwe🇿🇼 the 6 cylinder engines are more common. Otherwise great review, thanks for the video Stavros, I'm a huge fan, cheers

I was lucky enough to be the first to take that lorry out on demo , I had it for 4 days and really enjoyed it. It actually out performed the pgr r500 euro 5 that I drive every day on hills . That r540 actually has air suspension on the front axle @stavros 👍

Love your videos, not a lorry driver but I love anything with an engine. Never knew how sorted and clean Irish trucks are until I moved out of the country, nothing like the UK. Hope it's not the death of the V8s. Not a sound quite like them

I think I would go for the straight 6
I've never really liked the vibrations from the v8 on idle.
But definitely go for the high cab.
A comment on the interlock valve:
It is optional, but mandatory on some markets. Also function is not as described.
It is a safety valve that activates when air pressure in the handbrake circuit goes below around 4-ish bar. When that happens you must also push that button in order for the hand brake to release.
Comes from accidents when cold starting trucks, where the driver tries to drive away before system pressure is normal and then exits the truck with hand brake off. When pressure comes back the (hand) brake disengages and the truck starts moving by itself.
I miss my Scania from 20 years ago. Drive a Cascadia now in Canada.

If I was going to spec a scania for myself, I would definitely go for a V8 that has the same hp and torque with the 13 liter. Yes it is going to be more expensive, but when you have 3 liters more engine volume and 2 more cylinders that engine will last much longer before needing an overhaul and will also break down less and consume less. Because there is much less tension on it
you are wrong our company pull heavy trailers and different in v6 and v8 is about 3 litres per 100 km.Count it in 1 million kms how much it will cost you......I would say cca 30 000 euro in trucks lifetime:-D

Good job mr stavros, impress to see new scania have brake lock button that can ensure the trucks will not move if stuck on hill or something even the air pressure is running out, great safety features for the trucks and also helps the drivers, before this only volvo have this kind of brake lock system..

@@chrisb99 lol so let me explain here briefly: v8 is 16liters with 8 cyliners. I6 is 13 liters with 6 cylinders. When delivering the same power, v8 has to work less harder so it is under less pressure. It means less break downs less down time and more time till inframe rebuild needed. So it will be more economical to have v8 rather than l6

From what I know in the Scania configurator the r540 does not come in manual gearbox but the r520 can be chosen with a manual gearbox

There are many reasons why I would go for the R540 over the R520 V8.
- Firstly, the V8 engine, interior and exterior are more expensive.
- The V8 is less economical.
- The 6-cylinder is more eco-friendly.
- In this case, the 6 cylinder has more horsepower.
And to be honest, both engines don't sound very different and that doesn't really matter for a truck.
Between these two, 540 inline six and 520 V8 I'd take the 540. Having a V8 doesn't increase income so it'd be just unnecessary expense.
And it increases the driving experience by 50% )))

Good explanation Stavros, but my advice as well you should teach how to drive all manual and auto trucks for better understanding.

Dear Stavros: Thanks for all your videos, they are Great. But I must say, that I disagree, when you and almost everybody else, say that a V8´s always sound better, than 6 Inline´s. Now I happen to LOVE The Inline 6´s and NOT like the V8´s, so I would take an R500 or R540 Inline 6 Anyday over a V8, so obviously you are entitled to your opinion, especially since it is your UA-cam channel, but although many may agree with you, there are still people like myself, which love the sound of the Inline 6´s, so please have this in mind, when you make your videos.
Otherwise, you do a Greaaat job, Stavros.

Aberdeen Belfry all trailers are 45ft and under
Sweden, Norway and Finland run with longer stuff, up to 85 feet but that tend to be doubles rather than a single trailer.

The number of cylinders doesn't matter. The 750 is a 16 liter engine, just like the Scania V8.
