And you are correct to keep this antenna lower to the ground. It's not necessary to have it up in the air unless you only care about local. The take off angle for that antenna being how you have it is very conducive for skip. I am thinking about buying one of these and building it for 10m.

Also, everybody else can argue till the cows come home but that antenna only needs to be 11 meters off the ground any antenna I don’t care what everybody says if it’s 11 meters or 17 meters from 6 meters to 30 meters in any case just take the band and convert 11 meters to feet and the antennas height is at the feed point

Add 30" to the length and retune for true full-size 5/8 performance. You might have to manufacture a 66" (20" diam) ring - I did and found tuning up about 14'' from ground. Added almost 2 S-units to my signal strength about 17 mi away.

Leeman, thanks for the tip about modifying the V58 that Jlmoo1 #456 posted above. I tried an Eznec model, like you suggested, and it showed a good match and a great increase in low angle gain over the stock Maco V58 models I did earlier.
      You are a smart man!
      Thanks

Rings backwards, ground plane only need to be down 1/2 inch I think 245 inches max length top to bottom ground plane the two pcs stick in only 4 inches the ring gap after you flip it the other way 1 inch gap don’t use the tune ring to tune from the start move the clamp 6 inches to the right from that back but you got it on the left side get a SWR analyzer tune, the overall length and get your channel 20 at its lowest SWR preferably a 1.1 then get 40 and ch 1 to a 1.2 then after all that you mite can tweet the ring tuning

I have heard good things about Maco.. This is my first Maco antenna.. I purchased the Maco V5000 the only thing I can see that I don't like is the construction of the antenna.. instead of using rivets to hold the brace bar in place, they use clamps.. and the bare copper wire for the SWR I don't like at all.. and the hardware seems to rust out pretty fast.. they should have used aluminum or brass.. I have not even got it together yet.. I am running an RCI-2995DX around 350 Watts.. I will let everyone know how it works out.. (UNIT928)

Using a clamp removes the need for a hole for a bolt or rivet and hence no point of weakness where the aluminum might fail.

Also wrap your pl259 like from the bottom to the top so your overlapping just like putting shingles on a roof

Coax conn. should be wrapped with splicers tape or water will be getting in easy and ruin everything. will also keep conn. on after you lock it down with channel locks a bit. Engineer

Get the tune right with hose clamps first. Then at each joint use small rivets to secure the joints. Use a good quality corrosion inhibiting grease (DeOx) at each joint first. Replace the mild steel hardware with stainless steel with plenty of DeOx to combat dissimilar metals corrosion. Wrap the coax connection with butyl tape for a water tight joint. My Maco V 5000...Same antenna...has been up 25 years at 30 feet through 60 mph winds and North Easter ice storms here in NW Washington. Came down twice in the first 5 years for inspection...no issues...hasn't been down since. Use an electrical 1/2 wavelength of coax between the antenna and an antenna analyzer or VSWR meter on a radio to tune it at the feed point to be sure your antenna is tuned to 50 ohms for the lowest actual VSWR. Run a length of coax back to the shack at odd 1/2 wavelengths to keep your system resonant at your tuned frequency and your VSWR meter in the shack will read correctly. For a 100 foot run back to the shack, LMR 240 should be cut at 7 half wavelengths or about 106 feet depending on which formula you use. A 5/8's wave ground plane is one of the best for local and DX communications.

Just never use stainless nuts on stainless bolts or you might find them galling together when they'll break before spinning loose.

@@RU2AIM Absolutely on the galling, Just a dab of anti seize will do ya...

Buy maco V5/8 instead. The quality is far better than the workman brand. Workman is just a cheap knockoff.

The direction of the ring makes no difference, it's merely an impedance matching device for a 350 Ω .55 wave antenna. More CB Myth. RF doesn't have a favorite spin direction - lol and whomever made that up is jerking your chain. Does your truck prefer to head north or south on a flat highway?

How do you adjust the swr on this antenna? Do you adjust the height of it or do you have to move that little wire on the ring or both? I had a Maco 5/8 a long time ago and I don't remember how it was done. Thanks.

  • @rondellschuyler7074

This antennae is a copy of the Maco V58. The quality is not nearly as good as the Maco. That is why the SWR is more difficult to adjust.

Is it correct that you get 400-600KHz useable bandwidth with this?
