  • My home built heavy duty version of the Penetrator 500. The penetrator 500 is my favorite CB Base Antenna of all times. I have had one for many years but have a problem with Barn OWLS trying to roost on the capacity hat and after having to replace the top 2 sections several times this is my fix. Call it ECO friendly now they can roost on top of this antenna all they want and still watch for prey. Hopefully this antenna will give me 20 plus years of trouble free operation with Great performance and bandwidth.

    Looks really good,solid,....
How about showing what it reads on your antenna Analyser.

I watched with great intent and interest and, it's AWESOME! The only things left unaddressed that I feel are critical to any homebrewer were:
    • 1 The dimensions of the hairpin (lengths and guage)?
    • 2 The length, from the bottom of the radiator to the bottom of the ground plane assembly?
    • 3 The lengths on the capacitance hat as 9.5" for each leg, or 9.5" from tip to tip.
1a. I'm guessing, the first leg of the hairpin (on the right as videoed) is approx 3/4" wide x 4.5" tall? The second leg (on the left) is approx 1" wide x 8.5" tall? Made of 10 or 12 guage wire?
2a. As for the distance from the bottom of radiator to the bottom of the ground plane assembly...I'm guessing it's about 8.5"?
(A 1/2" below the bottom clamp, 7" between clamps, and another 1" for the width of the top clamp where the ground plane rests?) A question asked by someone else and left unanswered)
3a. What exactly does the 9.5" measurement on the capacitance hat encompass?
    Care to confirm anything?
    TIA
    73's
    Ken

Penetrator 500 is a 5/8 wavelength CB base antenna. 22 feet is approximately 5/8 wavelength depending on where on the 11 meter band you calculate for. 5/8 is 0.625 and not 0.64.

Thanks man I just found some HF at least looking ground plane antenna in my dad's attic, including a radial/mast manifold connector with something clamped aside that looks like an attached baby antenna (finger-long) and under it is where coax literally is accepted like a pro deal. Thru this helpful video it looks like it's either good for CB and 10m or can be trimmed/tweaked to such! Thanks!!

I want to know more about building a .64 wave antenna for 27mhz

  • @emanstorm2481

The original Penetrator 500 tuned dead flat at 27.000MHz and used 45° *downward* top hat rods so they wouldn't activate like a true capacity hat.
Having a flat horizontal capacity hat installed like yours causes additional electrical length, approx 2.4 times the length of one side.
You've effectively added about 24'' to whatever the measured height is of the main radiator, plus the circumference of the radiator, because the additional average circumference is additive.
If you want the lowest TOA attainable, then keep the overall length down to right at 20' incl that cap hat and extra fat tubing used throughout.
Any longer and your TOA will rise above the lowest 5/8 attainable TOA of right about 8° - 9°.

I recently acquired a .64 wave Archer "Crossbow". About the best that Radio Shack offered in 1978. All is here and straight except the top section. There is no literature on the planet that exists for this antenna. RS is of no help either. I was told that the Penetrator and the Crossbow shared dimensions. 22.6 was the common height for the radial. The 4 ground plane radials are 9 feet each. The coil shows continuity. I am unable to get the SWR down. I've added a top section of course but not knowing the exact measurement makes it difficult to guess at a tuning length. I started at 22.6 feet and inching down in small increments. With no analyzer, it takes several trips in and out of the garage. You state you are at 22 feet. Do you think that is more in line than 22.6? Sorry for the long post.

They can be tuned close to .64 but not fully he is right
.ther righy at the bottom of .64..they tune out atax length at about 0.62 wavelength

So, is that radiator 22' from the bottom clamp, or 22' from the ground plane radials? Just want to get that straight.

How did you design the matching rod assy ? Copy the old one ? I've tried to find data on how to fabricate one with no luck......
