Today it's Gold Any Original Hi-Gain Super Penetrator 500 is worth money. These were in the 1970s and still are today The best 5/8 wave ground plane Vertical Antenna you can get your hands on. Had one in the mid 80s 62 ft to the tip on a Rohn Galvanized steel tower. I could talk anywhere with no amplifier & a Browning Mark 3 tube type base radio.
Thanks I'm happy with the Duster, I got a 1.1 match with it, I listen more that talk now. I only have 4 radios, I picked up a nice Grant & have a NIB Trc465 I like it because it's so small & 2 23 channel rigs. I really like your vids on the other channel keep them comming
That damaged end of the radiator, (at 1:19) can be cut off with a hacksaw, then get some aluminum tubing and cut it to the appropriate length to make up for the section that was cut off. It's not magic. Years ago I was given an old Half Wave Ground Plane that was missing two of the upper parts of the radiator. I went to the local hardware store and bought a couple of sections of aluminum tubing, then I did the math to calculate the wavelength of channel twenty and cut the tubing sections to what I needed to assemble the radiator to a half wavelength. That antenna gave outstanding performance for years.
I got my first radio a trc30 back in 75 from my uncle then got out of it in the 80's used some mobiles for four wheeling and travel sense, just now got back into it found your other channel last week and subscribed, saw this and was like I know that voice. I'm always looking for old antennas, found a 70's Starduster last week 15 bucks I took it home in one piece lol also found a nice Moonraker 4 got the guy down to 250 I'm trying for 175
Looks like an easy step for a high stepper ! get some aluminum brazing rods and a map torch go to work.Take it farther apart clean it - weld broken parts back together.
@@Possumn1138 I bought one from him and he had shortened the matching network a little and lengthened the radiator about 6" with the top rods still on top. You can lengthen the radiator without the top rods about 15" with a smaller tube inside the top - if you cut off the threaded piece that holds the top rods screw, then bend a piece of copper to short across the top of the match and slide down the matching hairpin about 1/16" at a time until the swr goes flat.
@@Possumn1138 I know it works because after I bought one of the .64 modded ones, I helped a friend rebuild one, and the top of his had bent so bad we cut it off along with the top rods and extended it out to about 15" longer than the original length (including the rods on top) & slid a shorting bar down the hairpin match until his swr was flat
My SPT-500 survived Super Storm Sandy and several other storms including 3 Nor'easters and 2 blizzards here on the south coast of Massachusetts! It is at 60' and has handled everything that Mother Nature has thrown at it! And yes, it is one of the newer models made by Hy-Gain under the MFJ Banner, purchased through DX Engineering.
It doesn't look too bad, i'd buy that for spares for my own.. the top section where the 'top hat' goes, never had a black cap, so should be just a pressed threaded part so maybe the can has been added. the snapped off section are no problem. the radial are not a problem, and to me although a little weathered for 30 years old i can see it still working.. i'd be interested in the matching section alone as mine is need of one bad, mine a mess.. But i'm in the UK and can't go through eBay ??
