Colorblind Dad Tries EnChroma Glasses - They worked!

  • We gave my dad EnChroma glasses for his birthday and boy, did they work! I compiled all of the best footage of him when he tried them on for the first time. Here is a great video of the experience! We were in our backyard and then went to the grocery store.
    Please journey along with my dad as he sees more and more colors and is astonished by the color red! He does a wonderful job articulating exactly what it is like to be color blind and exactly how the glasses have improved his vision.
    The colorblind test on EnChroma's website revealed that he is a "moderate deutan", for those who are wondering his specific type of colorblindness.
    Thank you, EnChroma!

    Not only does HE describe well what's happening, the daughter whose voice we hear also has a clear understanding of how the process works. She isn't trying to make him react the way SHE wanted him to. She lets it be all about him. There are so many of these videos in which that isn't the case. Congratulations to him, and congratulations to his intelligent daughter.

    i am also colourblind and everything he is refering to, and explaining...everything is pretty accurate! i am also asked very often "how do you see that? and how is that to you? what about this?" ect. ...and it is always hard to tell...but he make some references that correct...like the little red flower in the middle of a lot of green leaves...if you see it, well, you can tell that there is a red flower...but from the distance you barely see it, or you WONT see it...like a bush full of red currants...my brother once said "wow, it looks like on fire! ALL red" and I was like "what? there is nothing red there!" ...then i went closer...and BOOM ...a million little berries
    and i am looking forward to my enchroma glasses...which i hopefully get soon :)

    His explanation at around 5:10 is a great way of describing what actually happens with red/green colour blindness... the overlap of receptors so that some green receptors fire when seeing red and some red fire when seeing green... so when the two colours are next to each other the brain gets a mishmash of signals. Very cool!

    • @CompatibilityMadness
      @CompatibilityMadness 7 років тому +1

      You can easy replicate this green/red mix with simply looking through green lens on red things, and red lens on the green stuff (they go "on top" of one another).
      Making right eye red and left eye green (or the other way around), is also a good aproximation of this. Best example here would be : Red/green anaglyph glasses.
      Problem with actual colorblindness is that it makes leafs and bushes with the same "dull" yeallow-ish/light green-ish color (because of lower blue/green pallette), on top of mixing green/red together.
      That's why seeing trees in more than two/three shades is such a mind blowing experience after putting these glasses on.

    Your dad is excellent in describing what he is seeing. Especially the part about spending mental energy to distinguish objects, while with the glasses everything is easier.
    We have to thank the primats for our colorvision, they had to know all the fruits and their colors while riping without spending too much energy.
    Cats and dogs have just two kinds of cone cells (blue and green sensitive), allowing them to see only partial color. We have three!

    The most important thing is what his wife said in the very beginning: his mind is like cement. Then we hear what he is saying in the end: I just went for what I knew because it took to much mental effort to try to figure out new things, His whole approach to life, his cognitive processes were shaped by his color weakness. This is AMAZING! Much like those little kids who had difficulties in school because they needed glasses.

    Very, very similar to my son's experience. The first moments he could see little difference, and was disappointed. It didn't help that it was a pretty overcast day. However, he started noticing that things seemed clearer or sharper. It was then that he began seeing some color. By the time he and I went for a walk in my neighborhood, he exclaimed how he'd never known there were orange marigolds (September of last year). For a kid who for 28 years never seen much of his color spectrum clearly, this was -- and is -- wonderful.
    Only wish these had been invented, say, five years earlier. His grandpa, my father in law, would have been blessed with these.

    I think I just realized the difference in these videos. Right brained people are emotional, left brain people are analytical with the experience. It might take longer for an analytical person to make sence of it, rather than just let go and experience it. You, on the other hand, sounded more right brained, waiting to feel the joy of him experiencing purple. Whatever the case, this was lovely to watch.

    Very interesting description he gives. I tried a pair of these at the Dr's office and she warned me before I tried them , to not expect any change. She was right. My understanding is, you have to be able to see color but not differentiate between some colors for these to work. I'm told I see what normal people see on a black and white TV show. I don't know if that is true. I know that everything is a different brightness but I don't know if that's color. I can remember in elementary school trying to understand what the teacher meant when they told me what color things were. I assumed I was just stupid, so I acted like I understood and agreed with what they told me. In 6th grade, my teacher, Mr Ermert (who taught me more than any teacher I ever had, and come to find out he lied about having his teaching degree and was technically not a teacher) figured out I was colorblind. I didn't really understand it at first, and maybe I still don't to some degree 40 some odd years later but it did help me realize I wasn't stupid, that there was a reason I didn't understand color and their descriptions. When my daughter was 4, she tried to teach me about color. She cried when I explained I will never see or understand it and that broke my heart that she was hurt that I couldn't. I guess I can't say I miss it, since I have never seen it. It is neat to see the reactions of people that these glasses help and I'm glad they are able to see color better. Great video and thank you for sharing.

      Wow, thanks for sharing your story! Right, there are certain types of color blindness the glasses won't work for, unfortunately. The world you see is what you see and that is ok!

    It's no wonder that he thinks he can see better overall. After all that's what vision is - the ability to see color. If we couldn't see any colors, we wouldn't know where anything began or ended.

      I'm not sure I understand your comment. I'm told I don't see any color. I'm told I see what normal people see on a black and with TV show. If that is true that I don't see color, I still know where things begin or end, so I'm not sure I know what you mean.

    This video makes me so happy!!! I would like to ask you, Did you just have your dad take the colorblind test online on the enchroma website and order them with that being the only test he took?
    My dad told me and my siblings that he is colorblind since we were kids but doesn't mention it much and after coming across a video on UA-cam I started watching more of these videos and had him take the test, and he is Mild Deutan. I would like to buy him the glasses as a surprise but questioning if I should take him to the nearest enchroma Eye Center.

    • @SheBuck
      @SheBuck  6 років тому

      Hi! Glad you liked it! It sounds like a similar situation. He always told us he was colorblind. I had him take the test on the Enchroma website and it said he was a moderate deutan. And so then I just ordered the glasses and they worked! So I think it will work for your dad -- I don't think there is a need to take him to an eye center. Good luck!!

    You live somewhere that gets a fair amount of rain and so you have a lot of different plants with different shades of green. The experience would be rather underwhelming if one lives in say Texas where it's all dry and brown!
