Waking up at 5am was one of those challenges I thought I would never achieve. But now having multiple freelance projects and working on youtube videos, I needed a better schedule to balance my life and maintain a high level of mental and physical health.
For someone who used to wake up at 7, 8, sometimes 9 am, here's my journey of how I became a master at waking up at 5 am. I break down the pitfalls, the systems, and strategies I used. By the way, I've gone 2 full months now waking up at 5 am, there's no turning back now. It's changed my life.

I’ve gone 58 days strong of waking up at 5 am! It’s a game changing habit!
Wow!!!👏👏👏
Do you still wake up at 5am? It’s day 1 for me, I went to bed at 2am but I still did it. Going to bed at 9pm tonight though I’m sure I’ll be tried enough to go to bed early
You have a ton of willpower! I don't know if a 5AM wake-up time is best for me, but I need to start finding time in the day that I can devote to myself!!
Why thank you. It wasn't easy :P but life changing :)
Friend: "why do you get up at 5am?!"
me, an intellectual: "you see, there's this club..."
just got to the end. "why wake up at 5? no need, just be the best to you that you can be. it'll make you a better you."
damn straight.
haha, you know I've actually tried telling someone that same logic. They called me crazy.
And yup. Self-awareness and focus on improving 1 percent daily! :)
Thank you, Harshil for the interesting video. Waking up at 5:00 AM is hard at first. I used to work on mornings and night shifts. It was hard to adjust, my company thought we were robots ! But, you adjust and go on. One nice thing was to see the sunrise in the early morning. Some how it made it all worthwhile.
Hey Carl, yes the sunrise is something I look forward to when I wake up now! Thanks for watching
Wow just found your channel ('cause I'm also about to try this challenge) and man! You are so good at making videos, can't believe I just found you.
hey! wow, thank you so freaking much :) That means a lot to me! Gotta keep grinding
Really good tips in here and nice to hear a focus on the underlying principles (removing distractions, taking care of yourself) and not just on technique (getting up at 5 AM). Great job!
Alondo! Glad you found this video helpful :)
I don’t understand how u don’t have at least 1 million subscribers
Soon! Give me a few years! :)
Curiosity Culture few years? how about a few months..
trust me you’ll get there.
your quality of content is as good as matt davella
If I ever sleep in past five am, I feel like the day is wasted!
I have 2x wake up timed. The first is 3.30am to take my medications. Then I go back to sleep to give them time to kick in. My second alarm is 5.00am when my meds have kicked in and I'm now physically and mentally ready to get up. Plus!! I have kind of given myself a really BIG 90 minute snooze sleep in! I get up, drink water, brush my teeth, have a shower. Do spiritual study (I study ancient yoga texts), then I do asana, then meditate, then shower & dressed. Then I head downstairs, have a coffee while I read up on my self-help books & stuff like that. Then I do my morning chores, make my son & me breakfast. I finish at 8.00am with a 30min walk. Come back inside, take care of loose ends then 9.00am I am ready to homeschool my son.
5:30 for me. still, a lot better than when i was lazy and getting up late and sleeping in until 7:00 or 7:30 and having no time for things to do and in weekends even longer (staying up till 2:30/3:00 and waking up at 11:00). it was a complete mess. i use my early morning time for writing my books. and also reading. hell i can even eat breakfast again. so many benefits.
Thank you for this video! I have to try this!!!
Love the editing I just had to subscribe
I say go for it, waking up early will change your life :) Thanks for watching and welcome!
Wow! Very useful information! Especially the 20/20/20 advice! And the handmade calendar!! (I tried to do something else, with post-it, but it didn't really work because I was just adding things to do before breakfast! didn't occur to me that it would feel rewarding just looking at what you've achieved so far!) Another thing that might be useful is learning how to wake up without an alarm clock. There are before-bed-techniques you can work on and it really works, as long as you've convinced yourself that it is important to wake up that time! and you're right! It is an amazing feeling! It really is an achievement! Keep up the good work!!!!
Hey! You just gave me another video idea, that’s my next curiosity, how to wake up without an alarm clock. Yeah try the hand made calendar! It’s game changer!
Thanks for watching :)
@@CuriosityCulture great idea!!! Let me know if you need any advice! 😊
I only wake up at 5am usually because of work. Other times I wake so early because I couldn't sleep or just for no reason. It has become a routine of mine to wake up at 5am just as long as I am not staying up late or working late, of course. I am following with everything you say in the video, trying to find time for myself.
Yeah, now that I’ve done it for 2 months, it’s become so automatic. And also the key is going to bed before 10
Today first day I woke up at 530am, wow, all day tired, sleepy and "cranky", luckily not working for next 2 weeks, so I can afford to try this habit for 2 weeks, and its only around 6pm now, and it feels like I lived for 30 hours today already, and got more things done, but that sleepy feeling is there, not sure how I can operate with that once returned to work in 2 weeks.
I've been meditating between 20 and 40 min for about 550 days. It does have it positive effects and with time the mental chatter attenuates. It is a very slow process and as you stated in the video, six months is the time needed to see an effect. For me, it was about one year before I could definitely notice an effect.
Feeling sleepy around 9am is something that I can totally relate to, will try to do what you did to remedy that 😊
Yes! I think it’s a level of feeling ‘jet leg’ from not being used to the early mornings, but some sort of exercise always helps :)
I love waking up at 5. the problem is i cant get out of my bed most of the time i need to get past that!!!
Hey! At least you’re already waking up at 5, that’s the hardest part!
Waking up at 5:00 a.m. is me and literally every single other skilled trade worker lol. It's the exact same as waking up at 9:00 a.m. just you go to bed earlier and you have more time to yourself in the morning. Sometimes you got to miss late nights with friends so you can be up for work that's just part of the job that I love doing
yeah I will say, I do miss those late night not gonna lie
As a college student who wastes so much time procrastinating, I really want to try this. Maybe at 6am tho. Great video :3
Jay Em yes you should, I actually woke up at 6 am a few days before I started the challenge to prime myself. It’s game changer, I lost 4 pounds since I hit the gym everyday.
Curiosity Culture update: I didn’t do this at all
I'm trying 6:30, it's best to gradually wake up earlier than do drastic sudden changes. Normally I'd wake up at 11am, but now I'm on my second day of 6:30. Did I mention that I also kicked a benzodiazepine addiction cold turkey? Those things are harder to kick than opiates, remember that you've got more willpower than you think you can because I thought I had none at all. Writing things down helps a tonne too!!
@@turnip5359 oh i m tryna study 10 plus overs still at 6 hr 50 min max 😣
Thank you for this . Loved your take on it. Trying to incorporate it this year but just like you i was finding it hard up to stick to the routine and sometimes even end up staring at my wall , wondering why am i up so early . I actually have trouble sleeping for 8 hrs at night and usually wake up around 3am ish. So by 11am, i'm already feeling woozy. Would love to know if you have any tips on having a proper 8hr sleep at night . Cheers from Malaysia!
Best video I’ve seen on the topic yet, least amount of views. I’m logging off at 8:30, gonna read for 30 minutes then I’m up for day one tomorrow. Thanks for the Robin Sharma input

Very soon! I visualize it on the daily! :)

When you say your sleepy around 9am, what do you do to make yourself keep going without taking a nap?
So a lot has changed since I started this challenge. I still wake up at 5 am, but I tend to fall asleep from 10-11 pm now. I also now take a quick 30 minute nap during the day to give myself a reboot.
That being said, I'm always listening to my body, if I need more sleep, I wake up later.
@@CuriosityCulture ok great thanks!
The trouble is it can leave you sleepy all day i dont know weather its good or bad for you
Great video but I'm an night owl so 5am is just to early for me.. but well done you.
Hey! Made respect to night owls, also thanks :)
I remember doing this during summer holidays but then I quit after like 30 days because of a lack of self discipline. Maybe I should try it again. Good video, really enjoyed it!
Yeah I think if life is has a drastic change like going from break to school, it can be tough. But yes.. try it again!
Use an app like stay focused, you can block your entire phone except the ability to make phone calls, from certain times. I have nine blocked from 10pm to 9am, but I'm thinking of having it blocked from even earlier in the evening.
yes! I've been looking into different apps that could block my phone for the majority of the day.
When you said "Hey Google", my phone responded haha
Early to bed early to rise.
A lot of good, positive advice thanks. Im an early bird myself. However, if I dont press the snooze button Ill sleep for another hour.👍😃
J. S exactly. That’s the motto I’ve been living by these past few months. And yeah, I know if I snooze, I’m not getting up. Lol
Oh that glorious sunrise... worth waking up to. 🙌💯
Yup! It’s soooo worth it! Makes me love life a little bit more honestly
I have no motivation to wake up earlier than what I do. I wake up 6:15 am work at 7 (shower and set clothes aside the night before) my doc Mr Mahi told me to stop prepping and planning so far ahead (my anxiety) so I figured I do need to be up at least 1 hour earlier to accomplish that...
Every morning I wake up and run to the watercloset to handle my biz then I fill the rest of my time looking at my phone for news and then zoooom off to work (I live 5 min away by car) So because of that I developed this lazy attitude and blah blah
Anyways nice vid thnx man :p Btw what type of coffee you pressing over there? Is it better freshly ground?
Yeah, I get that, you’re super lucky to live so close to work. And as far as the coffee, I ground Starbucks coffee every morning haha. Don’t hate me!
This was life changing ! Love from south africa🇿🇦
Why thanks! Glad you found the video impactful :)
The napping thing is fr a problem. Just get so exhausted so fast.
Yeah, what I've found that's helped is go on a walk right after lunch. It helps a ton
Ugh I want a boyfriend like you.. so bad :(. Love your videos and that sparkle of curiosity in everything.
Man! Great Video, Been a minute since I saw your vlog on DTube though! Come Back!
Hey!!! I’ve been thinking about coming back actually haha, maybe I will ;)
is that a prize winning, personally cherished Frisbee-disk on your wall?
TheHillDragon why yes, yes it is! I used that frisbee all through college when I played ultimate on the quads of the universities. That college life.
This is great , what if I get up at 4am to get a jump on The people the people that get up at 5 ? Would you recommend this ?
Interesting content, your videos are always so well done! 😎
Thank you! Glad you liked it :)
Great FLIPPIN video man!!!
Thank you so much!!! :)
Watching this video at 5am. I haven’t slept yet. The irony.
haha darn hoping you got some sleep!
can you please do a video about your favorite books ?
Yes! I’m working on a book video concept! Thanks for the suggestion
I like the concept of your channel keep up bro 👏👏
Why thank you so much! Thanks for watching, I got more challenge videos coming! :)
Bro, good advice, but next time be sure to keep both hands on the wheel man..
Thats the same alarm tone on my nokia
haha! no way :)
Keep uploading! This was a great video. If you can update us now during the current situation I would really appreciate it!
That's a great idea!! I will make one soon :)
Thanx for the calendar idea❣️
Of course! Glad you found it helpful :)
How to wake up at 5 am? Get a job that you need to be at early.
You gotta find a purpose to wake up at 5. To simply wake up at 5 just to wake up won’t keep you motivated for long
You shouldn't drink coffee on an empty stomach.
I really have bad habit of sleeping at 2am or 3am and I'm just 17. So i started to shutdown the phone before going to bed. But they I started to over thinking. Do you have any suggestions for me?
Guess what it's 2am.
You should try to journal or try reading a magazine/book! And maybe times all you need to do is take deep breaths and repeat a mantra, I sometime do that when I can’t sleep. Works every time
Warren Buffet wakes up at 6:45am just saying 😉
