  • My youngest daughter and I took a trip out to the Guadalupe Mountains over Labor Day weekend to get out of the heat and to do some off road driving and camping in the Lincoln National Forest. After following a dead-end trail in the desert west of the mountains, we set up camp along a forest service road and enjoyed the cooler weather and spectacular views!

This is wild, we camp at the bottom just through the cattle guard coming off the black top. We've been going up there for 20+ years deer hunting with my wife's side of the family. Just past that radio tower we found some rocks that someone had painted up pretty and left. Also found a memorial, probably where the ashes were left of a loved one. As someone mentioned below, you missed the main attraction of the South Rim Road. Spectacular view beyond belief.

I live in Carlsbad, NM. On the east side of Guadalupe mountains. You took the most indirect route possible. From Del City, TX to Dog Canyon is the most remote area imaginable.
I've traveled, camped, caved, hunted and explored the area for 50yrs. I enjoyed your video greatly. But you missed all the best part of the Guadalupe Mountains. You were so close to the South Rim road, better camping, better views, bigger tress, higher elevation, and cooler temps. This place is so remote & off pavement. To get from Guadalupe Mountains Nat Park in TX, to Lincoln National Forest in NM is like 25 miles as the crow flies. But to get from one to the other is 200 mile drive in from the east on paved road. Or 80 mile from the west like you did, either way it is a
    4 hr drive.

I knew we were missing a lot. If we had a few more days to explore, I definitely would have hit more of those places. I loved the area, and I'm planning a return trip when I can spend a week or more out there. If you have any must-see places in the area, I'd love to hear about them!

Hello Michael. I’ll be visiting Guadalupe Mountains National Park in mid June. I was thinking of camping at the 13 site dog Canyon camping site in Woodlands on the north side. But boy those tent sites are close together! Too much for me. Too long of a trip from upstate New York to be that close to neighbors!! if I may impose upon you, a question, where might you recommend camping in that general vicinity for better camping and better night sky views? You mentioned south Rim Road, is that pretty much pull over and pitch camp wherever?

Ive done it before, that route out of Dell City is no joke. There are lots of unmarked roads and turns to figure out. All of what makes it a great adventure.

We service a radio site at Dark Canyon and have traveled that road many times. No cell coverage back there. Always stay on the main dirt roads and don't take any of those sketchy ones that don't look traveled. There isn't a lot of traffic back there even on the main dirt roads but if you break down on one of those someone should eventually come along. Seen many rattlesnakes back there as well. The paved way in is either dark canyon road or Queen highway north of Carlsbad, much easier and safer route to travel. Be careful and be prepared.

Cloudcroft is a much nicer and cooler area to camp. There are a lot of forest service roads and pull outs where you can camp without being bothered and still be somewhat close to blacktop. Also, cell coverage in most places as well.

O:45 - 50 time marker, Interstate 10 and Liv Oak rd, you literally placed the camera on the oil field hills and roads I drive up daily in 2 wheel drive. It is rare when we switch to 4 wheel. It takes several inches of rain to soften the low spots. Normally we just keep up our momentum through the gravel and steer straight. And thanks, driving north of Dell City has been on my list. Enjoyed it.

Is there any scenic overlooks on the way to Guadalupe National Park, coming from the east side ? Where you can just pull up on the side of the road and enjoy the view.

    • @lalelandadventures

There are a few along US 62 just to the east of the park. If you come from I-10 up highway 54 from Van Horn, the scenery is beautiful all the way up (that's at 1:05 - 1:20 in this video). When you get to US 62, you'd turn right (we went left to Dell City), and the overlooks will be not too far up 62 as you climb in elevation. Thanks for watching!
