I've added an update in the Description that has to do with getting Playstation 1 and 2 controllers working on the Retron 77 (with Community Build firmware installed on the microSD card). This is really good news for you paddle game players because there are some very awesome PS1 and 2 analog controllers. This is a method that involves using the splitter USB cable that was shown in the video.
A Tim Hortons/Dunkin/$tarBucks toast to you. Thank you for your research. Love the channel and salt n pepper folks who support this past time. Awesome.
Great video. Thanks sharing the knowledge. I'm just wondering whether the 2600dapter running via the OTG USB adapter would give a better authentic paddle experience in stella(that's how I run on my home made raspberry pi flashback device)?
I just bought a retron 77. Image quality is great. I would prefer the system to default to 4:3 ratio. But that's my personal preference. I tried Warlords and AstroBlast with my Hyperkin Ranger controller and the paddle seems to work okay. I have not tried my original paddles though. I guess everyone's experience may vary. I would have liked a scanline feature. I know some don't care for that, just saying it would have been nice to have that option. Otherwise it's a pretty solid alternative to playing or modding your original Atari 2600 to a modern tv.
After some experimentation Stella 6.6.0 is a waste of time. Stella 6.5.3 works very well with a Ranger paddle. (A keyboard also works via OTG). | Stella 6.1.0 works with a Ranger paddle, and a Hama USB 2.0 hub works via OTG. A keyboard and Megadrive controller adapter fit into it, and work nicely. I'll use Stella 6.5.3. for now, but I'll test other Stella releases when I get time.
Wonder if the fry button would give you rapid fire in space invaders. I can't remember exactly but there was a switch fry that would give you this on the 2600...... By the way thanks for this, this is great.
@@wiredupretro no i don't i have an original 2600 modded.. but i did find the answer on the original. You hold down the reset button while you turn it on... I'm going to test it out tonight.
So far I don't have a Phoenix, so I can't really do a fair comparison. I'm not even sure if paddle games would work on it when playing 2600 ROMs... are you familiar with that aspect?
Hello, I recently purchased a Retron 77 and updated the firmware to the latest Stella, I am facing a problem, when I connect two Retron gamepads, the system recognizes 1 Joystick and the other as paddle which makes it impossible to play 2 player games. Can you please make a video on how to setup the Retron 77 to recognize 2 players when connecting 2 Retron gamepads so we could play 2 players properly? Thanks in advance.
The Hyperkin Ranger gets things very stable, though... especially with the paddle addition I showed. It's truly the best solution if you are on the initial R77 firmware.
To be fair original 2600 paddles are infamous for being jittery after a few years even on real hardware due to build up. Have to crack them open, use a bit and clean it.
Hey buddy is there any way to make a good spinner for a modded oringal xbox that has coins ops and atari emulators... Any info will be appreciated. Thanks buddy
I have a 2600 emulator on my original Xbox and can use my USB optical mouse that's modded with a fidget spinner to play the paddle games. I have to plug the mouse's USB plug into a USB to Xbox controller adapter, and it works effectively. This should also work with any PC arcade spinner like the one I showed that's part of my Tron 80's Arcade Multicontroller.
@@wiredupretro can you do a refresh video on this ? A short video request like two to five minutes long? The modded xbox is awesome...i need to know to what adapters I need to make this happen. Thank you for your time. A fan of your channel Retro fan 4 life
What does your wife, significant other or even your grandkids say about that giant controller at the end of this video..... If i tried getting away with using something like that at my house my wife would get and use a real hook! And that would be the end of me (so instead I got the Hyperkin Ranger which can sneak in under the radar.... On the down low).
My wife has been really gracious... though she's basically just tolerating my hobby. No grandkids yet, but my kids are supportive of my classic gaming hobby... they really like Dreamcast, PS2, and Gamecube.
I LOVE they incorporated the FRY button, for better or worse I did that a lot back in the day 😝

Great video , built my own arcade unit few yrs back . 👌👌
This is fantastic.. 🤝🙌🙏👏Thanks .. I am gonna get the new firmware going this weekend…

Great video ! Very informative!
This one took some serious time to make, but it feels very good to have it accomplished :)
Great video :)
I like that Pac-Man my favorite game on Retron 77
Just spray some contact cleaner on the paddles. Open them up and spray some cleaner on the tracks. They should be good as new.
😊
Looks pretty cool 👌👌👌

I'm pretty sure it does- but I'm going off of others' experiences and what I've read since I don't have it.

I have heard that going back to an older firmware can solve issues. You might want to give that a try... could also solve the paddle issue.
does hyperkin have a discord server or info on how to do updates
I really can't say I know that. But I do know they have the R77 firmware on their website...
Community build locks up during gameplay.
Sorry you've had trouble with it. Maybe try reinstalling it on your micro SD card?
What a shame that the paddles are jittery. I love Brewkout and Super Breakout
