The era of international students enrolling in Australian universities primarily for permanent residency seems to be over. If you come for education, focus on your studies and then return to your country. The exploitation of the system by some students, particularly from China and India, has had negative impacts. Hopefully, the points system will remain a viable option for skilled migrants seeking residency.
It’s not about PR but eventually it’s about PR for everyone.
Because if you won’t have it you can buy a house or even think of starting a business. That’s the issue. Also, none of the international students would be spending $60k to $80k for a university degree in Australia if transition to permanent residence is blurry ( genuine student).
There are good students as well who choose their preferred countries based on living standards, job prospects and family member or etc. Consider yourself in their shoes, if you would be settling here and go through immense hardship without your family and even though if they’re working a skilled job offshore people gets prioritised, how would you feel? Choosing some people and targeting them is not fair, I have friends as well who got PR who’re not even working in their occupation. That’s the loophole which is not closed since ages. But government tends to seek money from all people/students in order by having a baseless point base system. That’s how they always do be it labour or liberal. Migrant blaming policy is always on the radar for certain news channels and government as well. Even without migrants, housing policy has been worst with liberal or labour. How much land have they allocated and approved for construction use in recent years? Median house price is through the roof and hardly a median wage earner can afford it. If we’re talking about migration policies then there are some controversial ones as well. Look what happened when migration policies were eased during 1900’s Middle east Cold War, you can see now heaps of criminal families roaming freely here. How come mafia families are so easily able to establish their foot in Australia even with such tight border rules? There are no fixed rules and policies for detainees as well, they’re released every now and then. Why can’t Australia adopt policy like UK and send everyone to Rwanda who comes here illegally for asylum? The list goes on and on. You can’t make it every time a chicken and an egg problem. 😂😂😂

(Look at previous PM who said to students to go back and then you expect every country to establish relations with you if you treat their citizens like this. Then now since we have started welcoming students suddenly there are a lot of them and you can’t control them, also there are people I ghost colleges who barely study and just focus on earnings. Why can’t there be a requirement to get distinction marks in GRE or TOEFL to get through these universities along with technical interviews with HOD or someone else? USA follows this pattern and asks students for GRE, TOEFL and LOR and interviews in order to get through IVY leagues).

When was that? 10 years ago before the Coalition? Cause the current numbers show that the majority of international students ended working in an area not related with their studies and without a clear pathway to the PR.
That’s why I am saying instead of giving mass COEs to students check their qualifications and grades and LORs and all and adopt a policy like USA which will attract highly skilled students or migrants. If country wants to boost up its education sector just by increasing number of visas given and fees paid to universities or ghost colleges that will always be the case. There are numerous students who came here just for earning money. Why don’t the government have a clear pathway for highly skilled migrants working in their sector and weed out the student applications lodged offshore before they even get here. I have seen numerous students who come here just for PR. They will choose some shitty course or nursing degree that is way different than what they studied and try to get PR first and then will leave the degree. Instead of prioritising PR to these people in Medical and healthcare, give them a condition to remain in their occupation for 2-3 years. Because no one would want to work for healthcare or medical nurse if they’re getting the same salary as an Uber Driver. Raising up the bar of English won’t have any affect on number of students coming here but raising bar of admission based on interview and merit can improve the batch or lot of people coming here to study. Why doesn’t government close down all other colleges and useless courses to all people? Because it’s money making machine for them. Even if one person gets through all of it and wants to contribute to society or to country he can’t because you have his/her hands tied down because of his uncertainties. He/she can’t progress in life and make necessary decision without a dedicated pathway to permanency. It’s such a broken system that it easier to give permanent residency to criminals than skilled migrants who are constantly contributing to economy in their sector. You don’t have to be genius to understand the system and how it works but problem lies within the government who always undermines the value of a proper migration system.
@@rushabhthakkar3042 from your two long paragraphs all I see is screaming how broken the Australian migration system is and how good USA is at setting up a high enough bar to attract genuine talented students and weed out imposters.
Here is what I propose: tie student visa to PR pathway and cap the yearly grant so ultimately fewer people will come to the country. Gradually raise various bars so only those brightest and finest has the best prospect to be permanent resident, such as giving competent English for student visa, proficient English for 485 and superior English for various GSM visas. The thing is, visa was and still is being treated as a product by Australian government, and “people our business” was at the visa grant letter footer. As such, those with money and bargaining power will likely decide how those visa programs go.
I agree current system is broken, and Clare O’Neil says the bars of entry is “too low”. But, where are the industry support on giving international graduates a fair chance of enrolling internship? Why some employers and industry bodies still insist on people getting at least PR before even considering other aspects of the applicant? Why some job application form literally asks people to be PR even though the job itself is temporary in nature? I don’t know much about USA in this regard but until international graduates can stand on somewhat equal footing to compete with locals in the labor market, those international students will continue to study health/teaching related occupation, get PR then move on to do what they want to do. It will not change.

Is very hard comparison between bith countries, the US sytem ks know for his complexity and long timeframes where Australia might be seen as more straightforward and simple.

USA offers OPT up to 3 years whereas Australia only offers 2 years. Additionally the net salaries in Australia are too low compared to US ones for a graduate (too much taxes)

Key word being “up to” and that “up to” only applies to STEM students I want to mind you. Most people can only get 1 year and thus only have 1 chance to be selected into having a potential pathway for permanent residency.
