Social work is incredibly difficult and exhuasting if it's not your passion. You should NOT go into this profession unless you have a heart for people, and on top of that you better have a great support structure around you(friends/family/church) or you may burnout quick.

Agree! And you should NOT go into social work if you are only doing it to meet your target bonuses, out of selfish reasons.

Here's the real MSW student experience: approximately 400-600 pages of reading a week, at least two 5< papers a week in addition to attending 3-4 classes AND interning 24 hours per week. It is not the cake walk this video portrays. Bear in mind that this program takes roughly 2-3 years and costs, at the minimum, $20,000 (in addition to any undergraduate loans). It is neither cheap nor easy.

Cassandra's Curse wow, that definitely explains it well, that is a lot. I am VERY close to applying for an MSW program but I'm older (in my 40s) and I don't know how on Earth I could pull that off honestly. And then work at a slave job for 2 additional years slaving to get my supervised hours...then facing the licensing exam which I keep hearing that people fail repeatedly!! Getting this degree and the fantasy of one day getting licensed (I ultimately just want to do therapy) is sounding like a pipe dream to me...

I’m an LCSW who has worked 10yrs providing direct clinical care in non-profit mental health
Yeah, this has a lot of truth
      I don’t have 8 cats tho- i have 4 dogs and a chinchilla
      But yeah this is true
HOWEVER- i love my job and have no regrets
and there’s a difference between a “social worker” and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker
most people don’t know that because there’s no title protection so they think a “social worker” is the same as a masters level, licensed clinician. It’s not. That’s like calling a medical assistant and doctor. But unfortunately, there’s a lot of stigma because of this confusion.

A great way to get started is becoming a counselor at summer camps for at risk youth: it can be done between semesters. If you get burned out, which is common, you can always pursue a different career and help out part time in countless other ways with less risk and commitment.

I applied to and was accepted 3 to MSW programs early this year but I decided not to go because I couldn’t have a career where I have crises day in and day out. Having been a teacher, primarily with underserved students, I knew I would be taking my problems home with me and may be putting myself in situations where my safety could be at risk. I currently work as a receptionist at a mental health clinic and while we serve clients with a wide range of mental health problems (including those who have been hospitalized and are looking into IOP programs as a “step down” level of care), I don’t take our patients’ problems home with me because I don’t directly provide the services.

I have seen how they even write statements that are not true or they mix truth with aberration mixed with exaggeration. You know don't you that exaggeration is lying? Believe me, most of social workers I have met and dealt with, they are very arrogant and very judgmental. If you have seen they are non judgmental, it must be a tiny minority.

If you are that easy to demoralize and depress, Social Work isn't for you.
A Social Worker understand that the odds are always 1:100 against a favorable outcome, but they work their asses off anyway.
I guess you can say the defining trait of Social Workers is, while they are not immune to demoralization and depression, it does not affect their job performance...

I was a Social Worker for 20 years. It was a great Job for most of that time.I met and worked with all kinds of people, some of whom were real heroes some were arseholes, just like in life every where! In the best times the task was about using your personality to befriend and advocate ,assisting people to find their objectives. It was when 'we' tried to become Police/Doctors / therapists that the decline set in! Now we have lost this we have just become bureaucrats and Health auxiliaries!

My mother is a social worker, and she works for multiple health-care agencies. If you're looking to be in this profession, you have to realize that your work is very confidential, your clients may not speak English very well, and that your clients may be very rude to you. Some of the upsides to this job are that the hours are very flexible, and you are helping people get the services that they really need.

I've become a social worker for exactly the right reason...here it is...No one ever expects you to achieve any results with your clients. Boom. Social work is the one job where you can consistently fail and still get paid. Crack heads, homeless people, troubled youth, minority populations...they have never made their life better with a social worker...They sack up and do the work themselves. But life will always suck for someone so we will always have a job.

sad that most people think of Social Workers as just Child Protective Workers (negative work of the media) but don't realize that Licensed Clinical Social Workers provide over 60% of all mental health services in the United States. SW's act as advocates, brokers, and networkers for their clients in addition to their clinical expertise.

    • @lessonsforlife8232
      @lessonsforlife8232 7 років тому

Excuse me! I had been in courts, meetings and so on. I have seen that what a lot of media says about social services, is actually correct. I have seen how they exaggerate, how they can be so biased, even discriminate. I saw how they have done some grave mistakes, which cannot be justified, how they ignore people's wishes and feelings when they should act upon them and the list goes on. So don't come here trying to deceive people that social work is as rosie as you state. I had seen enough of how they conduct themselves. I am surprised you did not mention, how social workers also get target bonuses, thus motivates many of them to selfishly care more about the bonuses rather than what their actual job responsibility is meant to be.

I am being mandated to allow social services to investigate me because I needed to reschedule my child's school conference due to my work schedule. They said needing to reschedule a conference is an act of neglect. When the conference was made up at a later date and resolved the issue with the school, the social worker wouldn't close the case and left it open in order to look for reasons to find me guilty of anything. She made up lies that are hard to prove.. lies such as there are other people living with me when there aren't. The social worker gets some kind of commission for putting people in mental health services which would hurt my career, if my career is hurt then the social worker came to hurt my child financially. My case has been in investigation for more than 3years for no reason, I went to the stupid conference a long time ago. Now I am fighting so that they don't put my entire family into their services. We are considering moving away from this state because the social worker has hurt us financially. I need more than 5 days off every month for more than a year. When I ask the social worker to file a satisfactory report she says she doesn't know how, when I ask her about the allocated federal grant for $250,000 her department receives when they remove a child she wasn't able to answer my questions about her departments economic system, she can't even tell me when court is. The judge won't allow me to testify, and says it's not bias because they never heard anything from me. I am in CT. CT social workers want to put you out of a job so they can force you into poverty, into the welfare system, into their services.

I take that as a good thing. Praise the Lord they havent been through trauma or addiction themselves. But it all depends on the level they are at. Thats what I dont understand...why do people think all social workers have the same level of training...BSW, MSW, LCSW, and PhD are ALL diff levels. Someone with a BSW doesnt know NEAR the things these other levels do so obviously if you have a social worker with a BSW in a trauma/addiction setting, that person most likely DOESNT know about it.

Yup! Couldn't have better said it myself. In some ways she's totally insensitive, and full of shit, but in most areas [I swear] she's spot on. There's some sort of a disconnect between the girls who are drawn into studying "professional" social work, and those who will be able to survive it. Where I went to school, it was a beauty queen/latina princess parade--not characteristics that are going to help you survive the "politics" of a social work agency in a major urban city.

But the girl in the video talking to the teacher does represent at least half of the girls that think they are going to be able to do "God's work" and really should not be in the program. If you are looking to be a social worker don't be that girl our half those fundamentalist views cause the Code of Ethics that you are required to follow will interfere with your own.

I have resect for social workers wanting to better families, and individuals. But honestly, most social workers I meet, as I have met MANY coming into one of my family member's life, and do not have a clue! We are talking BOXES of ROCKS! I don't think they've ever actually met a disabled, or mentally ill person, or understand anything related to people who have experienced trauma in their life, and cannot function in everyday society.

I take it you do not know how they are more interested in the target bonuses which Tony Blair has increased when he was the prime minister. You don't know how many of social workers, are so biased, judgmental and how they exaggerate their statements. We know exaggeration is lying. What is more shocking I have seen it so many times, where they write statements knowingly it was false. How they even don't put a finger or effort into helping the family stay together. I have witnessed all of these things, been in courts, meetings and so on. I have seen some grave mistakes they make. The list goes on.
