How to Bring Your Invention to Life (Do You Have a Product Idea?) - Copper SPEC-DNT Live Case Study

  • As you might know, once in a while I do a "detour" video on this channel away from the current series. I'd love to know: do you have a product idea? If so, have you wondered how to bring your invention to life? In this video, I talk about my favourite way to test the market with me and my friend Eric's latest product design: The SPEC-DNT and use it has a live case-study.
    🚨Brand New Facebook Group To Help Each Other Get It Together (created May 2020):
    / gittogether
    The Campaign is over. It was successfully funded on May 4th, but if you're curious, here's the page:
    www.kickstarte...
    The point of this video is to gauge your interest in seeing an entire series in the near future about cultivating an idea, making a prototype, and then using crowdfunding (like kickstarter or indiegogo) to validate whether or not people actually want it, so be sure to vote in the poll in the video or comment whether or not you'd like to see behind the scenes of a product idea from start to finish.
    We have no idea if our product is appealing to the masses. What I do know, is that Eric and I have been using these prototypes for over a month, and the SPEC-DNT has become a part of our personal everyday carry kits (EDC).
    That's why we're using kickstarter for crowdfunding; to test and validate product-market fit. If it doesn't get successfully funded, then chances are, people don't care for it. If it does, then we know we might have a recurring business on our hands. Regardless of the outcome, using crowdfunding is the least risky way to test an idea with the real world, without having to manufacture a ton of inventory that might never actually sell.

    I’ve done a bunch of research on an EDC touch tool and I’ve decided this seems the best, only to find it’s not being sold anymore… Can you make more?!

    I actually think this is a marketable product and EXTREMELY well designed for its uses; the simplicity (and actually versatility it seems) are BOTH great.
    Quite possibly a large segment of EDC people are not germophobes or care much at all about things like CV or avoiding contact with things frequently touched by public traffic though.
    I love the fact that it genuinely does something there aren't many other products designed for (and something that many people DO want to accomplish.)

      Oh, just realized your best market is probly Japan or Korea :D
      Maybe you could even have a company from one of those countries manufacture and sell your design! (Though you may have already figured that out too huh? :D )

    This would be much, much cheaper to produce with a wire EDM machine process. You can take blanks of copper, stack them and produce fifty or more at a time.

    • @MauriceMoves
      @MauriceMoves  4 роки тому +1

      Oh heck yeah... the thought of one day owning an EDM is a reaaaaal dream... but haven’t saved up enough 😜 we used our mill to prototype, will probably use the laser cutter for production... I think the cheapest option might be to punch them out, but that initial tooling for the press is really high too. We gotta work with what we got for now! Are you a machinist? Do you have an EDM? 😮 we have a strict rule for ourselves: either manufacture in-house, or find another manufacturer in Canada or the USA iF we ever need to scale up production. Thanks for watching, Dennis G! 🙏

      Sadly, no to both questions. I just had an exploring the trades sort of class way back in high school and one of the machines was an EDM. They made aluminum keychains for our entire class in less than a minute. It was fascinating and I loved the used cloud of copper wire that was stacked up. Good times!

    How do you put it out to the public for funding without someone else stealing your idea ?

    • @MauriceMoves
      @MauriceMoves  2 роки тому

      Short answer? You don't! Long answer? Every month hundreds of product ideas successfully launch on public crowdfunding forums with no fear of idea-theft for a few reasons...
      First: 99% of product launches are not truly original - for example, hundreds of "slim wallets" have released on Kickstarter and IndieGoGo because each of them does something different, that speaks to different customer segments.
      Second: By the time you launch your crowdfunding campaign, you're already so far ahead of the game - if someone wanted to steal their idea, they'd be playing catch-up the whole way
      Of course, it's possible you're in the 1%, and you've created a brand new technology or product category - depending on the projected market size, then it *may* be worth it to pursue patents, but again, for 99% of product ideas, completely pointless to try and "protect your idea" before your idea's even been validated to have product-market fit and demand. Thanks for watching, and hope this helps!

      Sounds like it's solving a real challenge! Do you see future customers mostly being developers and construction businesses? As in, is this a B2B idea (where you sell to businesses), or more of a B2C idea where it'd be frequently needed enough by the average Joe/Jane to be sold at hardware stores?

    • @junebug1988

      @getittogether yes and no. This is a tool that would even make work easy for people doing normal things in their home or other projects.. it could be sold at lowes, home depot, walmart.... Ext..

    Where can I go to get a working prototype of my product made

    • @MauriceMoves
      @MauriceMoves  4 роки тому +1

      Hey! Exciting that you have an idea! Without more context, it’s tough to point you in the right direction, but if there’s no one you personally know that has the skills nor tools to execute, the general term to search for is: *“contract manufacturer in ”* ... the more prepared you are to start the conversation, the less time and money it’ll cost you in the long run, so if, for example, you want to design clothes, buying existing clothes or fabrics, and even safety-pinning different elements will help you communicate what you your desired final product is. If your idea combines hardware and software, you may need to work with a hardware “contract manufacturer”, and a software developer separately, and have them collaborate together as well. Again, with no context, it’s tough for me to offer more specific suggestions, but the first thing I’d do is identify “materials” and “processes”, and just ask your FB friends “know anyone who makes stuff out of and knows how to do ”? Hope this helps a bit!

    A total waste of money. This idea cannot replace a simple glove.

    • @MauriceMoves
      @MauriceMoves  4 роки тому +5

      This is why I love capitalism. People vote with their dollars, and a “total waste of money” is a CLEAR indicator that the dollar-vote is lost. Thanks for your insight on the way you approach it. I definitely agree that a simple glove is pretty tough to replace; I’m just not used to carrying around gloves as a part of my everyday carry, while my keys are definitely always on me. Respect for the blunt honesty.
