Fun Fact: According to Phil Lamarr (Jack's VA), the reason Samurai Jack ended back in the 2000's was because of Genndy's work on Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003).
That's a fair trade. But it's another example of something being cancelled or stopped because of star wars. Star wars will either destroy your career or save it.
I feel like the reason the 7 episodes after not being as good was because they realized they spent 3 out of 10 episodes doing what could of been done with 1, so they had less episodes to finish the series than they expected.
Giving my input on what they should've done, they should have cut the romance entirely and stretched out the rushed endings to the "Jack wants to kill himself" and "getting back the sword plots." Ashi can still disappear in the end without it being romantic since that was the last remnant of his adventure in the future leaving him.
The sandals episode is actually my favorite. Not for its comedic tones, but for the ending. It was just really nice to see jack with people who he could truly relate to and feel even a little bit at home with

Excellent retrospective and review on the series. I gotta say, probably one of the best edited videos you've made. I really liked the sequence you did with Ecstasy of Gold.
Has anyone notice in season 5 when Jack got his sword back and returned to his original self, the show also returned to its "Y-7 rating" roots. Since he got his sword, there was no more blood, swearing, or mature topics.
The ending they went for was perfectly fine but it's such a shame that most of the finale was rushed (and how they killed off the Guardian!). Saying that, I don't want it to continue, the story's done and the bittersweet ending is the perfect note to go out on.
I wish the ending did 2 things differently. One: be an hour long ending instead of half an hour, making the battle and the buildup to Jack escaping to the past more exciting. Two: leave Ashi in the past. If she could teleport herself in time, how couldn't Aku do it too? This part of the ending just didn't make sense to me at all, especially since she didn't attack Aku in the past either. Jack killed him immediately without her help once he was out of the portal. If Jack's sacrifice was just leaving his future allies (Ashi, Scotsman, etc) behind, that would've been enough of a sacrifice. Killing Ashi at the wedding was overkill.
Matthew Mazzatto How could he travel back to when he was destroyed or being destroyed, tho? Two Akus? That would have sent even more rigid minded folk into a frenzy haha

Honestly I’ve always felt they shouldn’t have gone the love story route with her. Personally would’ve preferred Jack finally get back to defend the Prime timeline while Ashi served as the successor who would stay and defend the future timeline
RebelTaxi: he has to go back to the past Me: *plankton voice* Yes... RebelTaxi: _to play these shitty games that suck ass_ Me: *_YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS_*
"I will now talk about season 5" *about 5 to 3 minutes left in the video*.....meh. Season 5 wasn't bad but they tried to shove in alot of stuff that wasn't really needed. Ashi in the end felt more like a plot device / deus ex machina than a character seeing how she instantly knew how to screech out a time portal eventhough she never saw Aku doing it or probably didn't even know he could. The ressistance army was brought up as this huge thing but if Aku never livestreamed Jack's capture they would never have appeared or known and some even met their end cause of this. The rulings of time travel are very hard to make work with, and Samurai jack is no exception as the whole journey he made from start to finish was erased together with Ashi when he slayed Aku. Not only that but before future Jack killed past Aku, a other Jack was just sent to the future. Was it the same Jack or a diffrent Jack who now roams the lands confused in a Aku free future. The end itself felt indeed quite safe and also a bit too sweet for my taste and Ashi's dissapearence from the timeline was badly timed just to give Jack the last gut punch.
Scratch that livestream crap, how the fuck did they reach Aku's castle in time is the real question, we see the leaders of each tribe that Jack saved watch Aku's stream and then they are infront of the army. Also, about that other Jack, it's actually quite simple, at the moment Aku sent Jack to the future, it created a time loop that made possible for Future Jack to go back in time to a moment after Jack is sent to the future to prevent a time paradox, if Jack wasn't sent to the future, Future Jack wouldn't even exist to begin with. But that opens another question: How the fuck did Ashi knew the EXACT moment where Jack got sent to the future? That timing was too precise, and it's not like Ashi knew how to control time travel either.
ultrix soma Don't you remember episode 7? Jack basically told her everything on that bird. People are missing this critical point, unfortunately. Also, are you saying all the portals Jack encountered before Ashi were set to send him to the point of time HE DESIRES? You gotta get a little creative.
For all we know, all he had to do was think about the time and place, or maybe your second time travel is supposed to take you to the point of the initial time travel in Jack's world. Get my drift?
WOW, just WOW. RebelTaxi, you truly are the greatest. I learn so much from your videos that it BLOWS MY MIND, and the nostalgia is happily welcome with both smiles and tears. The video truly encompasses the greatness, the nostalgia, and genius that is Samurai Jack, and although I haven't watched the last season yet but I'm still glad I watched this video. THANK YOU REBELTAXI, THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART WITH TEARS OF JOY IN MY EYES!!!😢👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
the ending to season 5 had to have one of the most saddest ending to any show. adult swim really knew how to drive a nail into the show. I'm gonna miss this show. I was so happy that a new season came back. and as soon as it came back. it went away again....
Jace Fiore Now you made me think of that bit of this vidro where Matt and Trey talk of South Park losing an award to Samurai Jack and both of them (and the host) having not heard of them, and thinking it's some sort of a sandwich. xD
My own personal theory on that has something to do with the IDW comics, which end with Jack, the Scotsman, the Woolies, the Thief, and a bunch of other people Jack has helped all getting ready to go and take down Aku as Jack looks the same as he did in that prophecy. I know they've been called non-canon, but since nothing in season 5 contradicts them openly I still consider them canon. Anyway, I think that Aku faked being vanquished at some point, and afterwards Jack went back to the Guardian and the portal, only for Aku to pull a 'psych!' and come out of nowhere, teleports Jack to the another part of the world and then killed the Guardian and destroyed the portal. Jack, feeling depressed, gave up whatever kingship he had earned (giving up his crown he had) and went back to his classic look, and eventually he made his way to the final portal and the incident in episode 7 of season 5. So I personally feel that the Guardian's prophecy almost came true... then Aku happened.
I was totally expecting Guardian to sae Jack in the final episode and for him to reveal the full extent of his powers (judging from the dialogue in the original episode we can assume the Katana wasn't his main weapon).
I like to think that the prophecy did come true just not in season5 jacks universe. In a parallel universe i like to think that was the time line the the guardian was seeing and prevent jack from going in but the guardian realized too late.
I loved this. I never realized how great this show was until I was older and could take a step back and really analyze the shows I watched as kid. If anything, I would have loved a longer, more in depth discussion on season 5. Episode XCIII was the most amazing piece of television animation and story I have seen in a looooong time. When Jack killed his first human, you could really feel his shock and remorse. The underlying themes of the season wowed me and I wish more shows had this feeling. I watched the whole series in a night on toonami and I am incredibly glad I did. GREAT VIDEO PAN!
I liked the way Gendy wrote the resolution to the series... Aku shared his Power Juice with a band of cultists, not realizing his ungodly offspring could ally herself with the samurai and use his own time powers to undo the evil portal spell...
But we never found out Jack's real name. We never found out Dipper's real name from Gravity Falls in the show, but eventually we found out in the real life Journal #3
I honestly think if the showed ended with him staying in the future and continuing to fight Aku it would be unfulfilling. The whole point to Jack's mission was to go to the past to end Aku's reign before it began and that's what he did and if people hated that then go cry in a corner in their granny panties because I think it ended exactly how it should.
I think that he should have fought the future Aku and defeated him and made a time portal where Jack realized he would have to leave Ashi and everyone else (which would allow for the heart wrenching moment). Then he goes back in time alone and defeats past Aku and returns to his town. Maybe he could do something that would allow Jack to send Ashi one final message, kinda like what Futurama did in that one episode. (You could say that Ashi or anyone else wouldn't exist in the future but there tends to always be some kind of error in these types of time travel scenarios anyway)
NO!! His mission was to KILL AKU first and foremost and it was established there WAS no more time portals!! What's wrong with a wedding?! I want a wedding! That was NOT how it should have ended!! NO!!!
Michael Aiyedun He fulfilled his purpose. They didn't exactly do it like I was hoping they would, but they did it way better than anyone expected them to.
MrKiron12 Yep, I remember when Jack murdered his parents in cold blood, and killed all the people in the past too. Should've stayed in a future where Aku is even more overpowered, and where everyone is getting a shitty life except for those in line with Aku's evil.
TheJediSonic When was it ever stated that Aku is more powerful in the future? Like Jack could've easily killed him in the Future but deus ex Ashi was like nope we gotta wrap this shit up
Juan Don Nadie I thought him losing Ashi was kinda representative of everyone he lost. Like she was the embodiment of everything he loved about that future and how it faded from his arms.
Huge fan of the show. i own all 4 seasons on dvd and ive watched them many many times over and id like to give my honest opinion about how the show was ended. I thought for a very long time about it; how jack deserved happiness and the ending should not have done him like that but the realization i came to is that i think it was intentional. Jack returning to the past and completing his "objective" is the return to normality. its dull and real. every single adventure and interaction he had in the wild and whimsical future of "akus corrupt timeline" never actually happened. i believe it to be a bit of a statement. life is balance. think of jack as light and aku as darkness. yin and yang in a sense. both need to exist for there to be life. the common denominator in the universe is chaos and that includes aspects of both happiness and sadness. what we saw was light vanquishing evil. I do not think that ashi vanishing was necessary. she is the daughter of a celestial deity with full control over the time stream and you're telling me she cant exist as a temporal anomaly? The point was basically to say "are we better off now that the task has been complete?" all 4 seasons (arguably the best parts of the show) never even happened because of it. the show is a true modern epic. in my book it is essentially a masterpiece, and for me, anyway, one that could've done without a proper ending.
one of the tenets of being a samurai is the ideal of duty over everything. i think the melancholy ending of him not having ashi is a really good representation of his resolve as a samurai. and samurai jack always was an omage and love letter to westers/samurai movies/noir etc so the hero having a bittersweet ending is usually what happens
btw they made a game where the ending is she did not die, and the people who worked on s5 said that they prefered that one over season 5 one but her disappearing was more appopiate
Why does everyone act like it was just tumblr being upset about it, though? Reddit was one huge circlejerk of 'LOL TUMBLR' that accused anybody who just didn't like it of being a triggered sjw.
i was in Tumblr at that moment, looking at the mess. Yeah, not everybody was a triggered SJW, but guess what, there were SJWs and they were crying harder and louder. It was goooood af. You can look for compilations of what that people said at that moment, it's so irrational it's priceless X'D Fuck Social Justice Warriors, kudos to Samurai Jack Warriors.
This was one of your best videos yet Pan, I really liked this. As a huge long time fan of Samurai Jack this was an excellent Retrospective to the whole series, great job!
there are even more obscure references. in the fourth season appearance of the scotsman, a tiny man at the docks asks the scotsman if he wants to hear a sailor's tale, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. As it turns out, that was the title of the longest Iron Maiden song until 2015. it's fun to connect stuff like that
Oh my god dude I loved a lot of the montages that you did and the editing as well. But yeah I felt the 5th season was somewhat rushed in pacing but at the same time the ending, while depressing, was somewhat bittersweet and also very open. So we may get a Samurai Jack movie or something. I personally wanted to see more of Jack's past or atleast have a moment where Jack atleast catches up with old friends before going back to the past.
Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack, Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack, Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack, Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack
I still keep coming back to this review in particular, Samurai Jack and Genndy Tartakovsky are huge inspirations to me. The Toonami style promo for this vid is also my favorite so far, the editing is perfect.
Hey, Pan! This retrospective video was great. Personally, I loved season 5. It was a nice way to give all of the fans what they wanted to see: Jack reaching the end of his journey and finally defeating Aku. I liked the relationship between Jack and Ashi and it was nice to see him have a human connection with someone after such a long time. As for the finale, I wish it had been longer instead of just half an hour because it felt too rushed but I liked it overall. Samurai Jack will always be one of my favourite cartoons now. I too want to know who that woman in the shadows was that talked to Ashi in episode 6? They never explained that.
(spoiler alert!!!) but are we just going to ignore that they created a grandfather Paradox at the end of Samurai Jack, long story short without getting too complicated with time-travel logic Jack was flung into the future by Aku and then immediately Jack and ashi killed Aku creating a grandfather paradox (a future where Ashi was never born), so going off that logic if that future where Aku is dead and no longer exists what future did Aku Send Jack to ? 😲
Time Travel is Magic based in Samurai Jack world, meaning any loophole you find can be fixed with: The Magic fixed the world to accommodate the changes.
Jeez dude. I gotta say you killed it with the editing and music/scene selection in this video, especially that section just before your intermission. Great job!
Watched this video ten times now. Makes me sob every time. You make great montages that motivate and remind me that I will one day create something as beloved and revered as Jack. I will never give up. Thanks Pan.
I'm so glad you do these retrospectives, Pan. Samurai Jack was one of the greatest parts of my childhood, and I'm extremely happy Gennedy came back to finish it when the show could just as easily have ended up like other memorable cartoons, canceled with no ending. That said, I was kind of disappointed in the ending, or at least, at how rushed it was. It hit all the right notes, it just hit them too quickly. We didn't even get a final shot of all of Jack's allies that we had come to love over the years.
Great job on this video! Especially that bit with the Ennio Morricone song. Would love to see you go into more detail on the latest season which just finished!

That's a fair trade. But it's another example of something being cancelled or stopped because of star wars. Star wars will either destroy your career or save it.
But the Star Wars show he worked on was extremely short so feels to me like he could have worked on Samurai Jack again after that was over.
It did not end in 2004, it was cancelled by Cartoon Network, then revived in Adult Swim.
Dang it George lucas
Didn’t Genndy himself confirm this.
Season 5 may not have been perfect, but those first 3 episodes sure were.
Agreed. Episode 1 was very reminiscent of past episodes and episodes 2 and 3 were nothing short of perfect.
First half of the series were absolutely amazing.

Or to stop The Demon Aku from, you guessed it, taking over the world.
M. Bison: OF COURSE!
I love how you called it a livestream.
ultrix soma Don't you remember episode 7? Jack basically told her everything on that bird.
People are missing this critical point, unfortunately. Also, are you saying all the portals Jack encountered before Ashi were set to send him to the point of time HE DESIRES? You gotta get a little creative.
For all we know, all he had to do was think about the time and place, or maybe your second time travel is supposed to take you to the point of the initial time travel in Jack's world. Get my drift?
18:25 Samurai Jack tribute is life-changing. Captures the essence of the series. Samurai Jack is what a person should aspire to be.
THANK YOU REBELTAXI, THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART WITH TEARS OF JOY IN MY EYES!!!😢👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
you graciously earned my like on the akku impression at 6:56 keep it up taxi.
the ending to season 5 had to have one of the most saddest ending to any show.
adult swim really knew how to drive a nail into the show.
I'm gonna miss this show.
I was so happy that a new season came back. and as soon as it came back. it went away again....
One of your best reviews Pan, really top notch edits. Honestly it shows how much you've grown as a content creator.
You will learn proper respect for Pan in the pit of hate.
Dev'n Around dunno why but it made me think of Pan's Labyrinth
IABI TV except that it got lost to a German film from Germany in the best foreign language film at the 2007 Oscars
Jace Fiore
Now you made me think of that bit of this vidro where Matt and Trey talk of South Park losing an award to Samurai Jack and both of them (and the host) having not heard of them, and thinking it's some sort of a sandwich. xD
"The Pit Of Hate" being an euphemysm for Pan's room
That montage with Ecstasy of gold was so good. Gave me chills
The biggest letdown of the show was the Guardian's prophecy was never fulfilled.
Not even that. I was waiting for the fucking rematch! I was so disappointed...
What if the vision was of future Jack after he defeated Aku and got back to the past?
Honestly I almost cried for this show cause it was just to amazing to let go
It's like a dying mother you don't want to see go
Tumblr: ASHI RUINED THE SHOW!
Me: JUST LET THE GUY BE HAPPY JESUS
*ashi dies*
Me: Well shit.
Oh ya well the Scotsman died
Who?
sbeve XLR8 i don’t even remember my own comment, no idea.
@@katagenesis Ok
That ecstasy of gold edit was fucking amazing. Adding this video to my favorites for sure.
I wish we could've found out his real name. Otherwise, I'm satisfied. Not many cartoons get to end their story on their own terms.
Jared Hall It's funny how we never find out, but I think it's for the best
But we never found out Jack's real name. We never found out Dipper's real name from Gravity Falls in the show, but eventually we found out in the real life Journal #3
Dipper's real name is Mason.
@@ClearwaterMK2 Mason and Mabel.
Huh.
Jack Sledge IV what if the show ended with jack staying in the future
It might have left fans wanting more ya know, not fulfilling enough, sort of proning on.
NO!!!
So jock winning solely because aku's daughter had the hots for him was fulfilling for you then?
season 5 episode 2 was the best thing I have seen in television animation history. the tension, action and cinematography were amazing.
The Space Ace reference went straight over my head as a kid.
I liked the part where some fans wanted to boycott Adult Swim for delaying an episode by a week.
he went back to the past and undid the future that was Aku
that's all I needed
10/10
shut up
Michael Aiyedun I honestly gave up on the idea of Jack returning to the past years ago. So it was an awesome conclusion I didn't see coming
Michael Aiyedun He fulfilled his purpose. They didn't exactly do it like I was hoping they would, but they did it way better than anyone expected them to.
Michael Aiyedun He also killed everyone he came to knew
what a hero
MrKiron12 Yep, I remember when Jack murdered his parents in cold blood, and killed all the people in the past too. Should've stayed in a future where Aku is even more overpowered, and where everyone is getting a shitty life except for those in line with Aku's evil.
TheJediSonic When was it ever stated that Aku is more powerful in the future?
Like Jack could've easily killed him in the Future but deus ex Ashi was like nope we gotta wrap this shit up
So Samurai Jack is really The Angry Video Game Nerd out to stop The Nostalgia Critic as Aku! (I LOVE BOXES!)
Its an obvious metaphor if you really look at it
my biggest problem with the ending was that the sorrow feeling jack had was only because of ashii. Not his friends, ashii.
Juan Don Nadie I thought him losing Ashi was kinda representative of everyone he lost. Like she was the embodiment of everything he loved about that future and how it faded from his arms.
Also I love how they put the original into into the show itself. Absolutely genius
Yeah it’s into was so good i was intro it
Huge fan of the show. i own all 4 seasons on dvd and ive watched them many many times over and id like to give my honest opinion about how the show was ended.
That montage you made for this video, some of your finest work yet, Pan. Awesome job for the whole video, actually.
I fucking loved the first 5 eps of season 5, and im so pissed about the others. thats just me tho, and am still sad and disappointed
Honestly, I didn't like the ending but the part with the ladybug made me tear up
btw they made a game where the ending is she did not die, and the people who worked on s5 said that they prefered that one over season 5 one but her disappearing was more appopiate
Tumblr having a meltdown over Jashi was glorious
agreed
Flame of Udun
the kiss scene was the best because of how hard /co/ and tumblr got triggered from it.
Well they got their wish on the last episode though.
You can look for compilations of what that people said at that moment, it's so irrational it's priceless X'D
Fuck Social Justice Warriors, kudos to Samurai Jack Warriors.
This was one of your best videos yet Pan, I really liked this. As a huge long time fan of Samurai Jack this was an excellent Retrospective to the whole series, great job!
I love how the Scotsman swears... without actually swearing xD
XD at the very end it seems Genndy gave up on the guardian story arc.
Clean your room up, Pan.
With the new Samurai Jack game coming out this week now is the perfect time to rewatch this video.
I'm one of the few people who appreciated the ending.
I'm one too.
i am one three
I am one 4
I'm one 5
I'm one 7-
Oh fuck i'm late
has anyone else noticed how sincere pan sounds in this its almost abnormal
like you can tell he really loved the show
there are even more obscure references. in the fourth season appearance of the scotsman, a tiny man at the docks asks the scotsman if he wants to hear a sailor's tale, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. As it turns out, that was the title of the longest Iron Maiden song until 2015. it's fun to connect stuff like that
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a poem by Samuel T. Coleridge, that's probably what both that episode and Iron Maiden were referencing.
Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack,
Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack,
Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack,
Gotta get back, back to the past Samurai Jack
Good video.
The editing during the Ecstasy of Gold bit is downright fantastic.
Asian Mark Hamill died? No wonder Aku didn't sound nearly as menacing as he did before...
I still keep coming back to this review in particular, Samurai Jack and Genndy Tartakovsky are huge inspirations to me. The Toonami style promo for this vid is also my favorite so far, the editing is perfect.
South Park creators didn't know about Samurai Jack, gee I wonder why...
A Future without Aku is one Jack can easily go back to the Past.
logicly the future with out aku is the present and all events after jack is back. no time passed at all, since jack made it back.
Time Travel is Magic based in Samurai Jack world, meaning any loophole you find can be fixed with: The Magic fixed the world to accommodate the changes.
Jeez dude. I gotta say you killed it with the editing and music/scene selection in this video, especially that section just before your intermission. Great job!
Now that season 5 took some time to settle. I can say for sure that the finale was actually a lot better than I initially thought.
Watched this video ten times now. Makes me sob every time. You make great montages that motivate and remind me that I will one day create something as beloved and revered as Jack. I will never give up. Thanks Pan.
5:14 OH MY GOD FINALLY SOMEONE ACKNOWLEDGES THAT MOVIE. I STILL HAVE IT ON DVD.
Easily Pan's best video to date.
Pan, this is one of the best videos you've put out in a while.
19:50 it sounds like he’s saying APPPPUUUU like the Simpsons charecter😂
Great job on this video! Especially that bit with the Ennio Morricone song. Would love to see you go into more detail on the latest season which just finished!
Ho shit! Iroh and Aku have the same voice actor? Well I learn something new everyday.
Narticus And Greg Baldwin replaced them both.
This show's aesthetic is one of a kind and still blows me away. I need to rewatch it.
Absolutely love this show ! Fun fact : They took out the end scene were the gods rewarded Jack by reviving Ashi. Wish they left that scene in.
That scene sounded really awesome and badass
@@TevyaSmolka It totally would have
@@MacobstonProductions indeed but hey i did hear some good news though with ashi and that's the new samruai jack game battle through time which apparently has a secret ending with jack and ashi i won't spoil it because well i didn't get to play the game myself but i did hear its really good.
@@TevyaSmolka Cool, I will check it out ! Thank you :)
@@MacobstonProductions anytime man ;)
Holy shit that montage/music video/whatever you wanna call it starting at 18:25 was epic. Great work man.
Please do Avatar: The Last Airbender!!
Great review Pan. You put a lot of effort into this. Shows your passion for animation.
Samurai Jack will forever be one of the best animated series of all-time! Along with the Simpsons, Futurama, and SpongeBob.
It was also one of the show's not to suffer from seasonal rot
i'd been waiting for you to use that song, thank you friend for that montage
