    I think I've got a pinky toe creeping into phase 4. The reason I say that is because drummers that are much better then me used to intimidate me. Now I'm at the point where I understand what almost any drummmer is playing, no matter how much better they may be then me. The difference now is I recognize that "better" just means they have a different set of skills they've chosen to work on for a longer duration of time. Whether that be a certain kind of fill/groove they play with certain cleanliness, or their sense of pocket or feel.
    It no longer means that they are some how just innately better or have some super-human ability, it means the path they chose in drumming is different than mine. And I respect that rather then resent it, or let it scare me.

    Excellent video, Adam! One area that I was surprised you didn't directly address is the development of listening skills and the ability to play well with other musicians. These concepts are often overlooked and underrated. In my career as a touring / gigging drummer over the past 10 years, my ears have gotten me much more work than my chops, (or lack of chops). So many drummers have amazing chops but don't know how to make music by listening to what others are playing and figuring out what’s appropriate for the situation. Regardless, this is a great video and it is already helping me in my journey as a performer and a teacher. You rock. Thanks so much!!!

    • @AdamTuminaro
      @AdamTuminaro  4 роки тому +6

      absolutely! A mature set of ears will undoubtedly get you more gigs and opportunities than technical ability. But it is tough to say exactly “when” someone’s ears developer, because it’s a skill that takes such a long time to acquire. Very good point though my friend!

      @@AdamTuminaro you're absolutely right. My biggest epiphany in drumming was when I finally understood subdivisions and how they fit into the grid. • @larkstonguesinaspic4814

    This video is very accurate! I've been fallowing the exact same sort of progression without knowing it. I played the first two years of my drumming just fucking around, trying to learn my favorite songs without knowing the basics very well but I guess I had fun. Then after two years I hit a wall and I couldn't learn anything new. i couldn't figure anything out. So, I got myself a teacher. He started teaching from the very basic stroke and note values and techniques like Rudiments, Moeller method and finger control.... Now I'm 3.5 years into drumming where there are millions of things that I can learn and I'm just constantly practicing from books and I can say I'm in the phase three, like totally in the wild west right now and new stuff to learn are poping up like crazy. And in the Internet age there's just SO MUCH MATERIAL to learn from that it's kinda overwhelming. And like you said now that I have good grasp of note values and time signatures I can learn anything ... IF I have the time.
    Before watching this video I always thought the first two years without a teacher and books was a waste of time. But this video made me feel like it was probably just part of the natural progression as a drummer. And the amazing thing about this video is that now I can see where I'm going with drumming in future. I understand what the next phase is gonna be which is great. Although I think I'm gonna be in phase three for at least 3-4 more years.

    That might sound strange. But in my almost 14 years of drumming (I'm almost 18 atm, started playing at age 4, obviously), the most motivated episode wasn't actually at the beginning, it is now, right at this moment. This episode of motivation is lasting since 2017, when I picked up the sticks since round about 1½ yrs. Obviously I had to "get into it" again, but since then, everytime I walk into my little kingdom behind the drums, or even the pad for practice, I have to smile almost everytime. It just brings total joy and pleasure making music and practicing on a pad. It's just... fun, really. And pretty therapetic. The best method to cope with something. Sit behind the kit, 2/3 hours later, you feel better.
    I promise.

    Man... I've had a journey myself. Long and painful... Completely self taught. After 12 years of drumming it's just getting better and more fun. Started with Green Day songs and now I'm on Emperor, Brain Drill and Origin... It's amazing.
    I've beaten myself up for years and forced myself painfully to become the best I can and I haven't even scratched the surface. Drumming is about discovering yourself.

    I just entered my 21st year of playing in May and never really looked at it this way, it certainly has validity and is a tidy way of looking at the process. My theory knowledge is limited and I started playing as a gigging drummer at 9, I could do different rudiments (didn't know what they were for the most part I still don't - it's all just feel). Stuff made sense to me from listening to music and turning the stuff I hear into simple memorable patterns to be applied more broadly around the instrument. Nurturing the creativity over sticking to the rule book is something I can really get behind though. While my studies and exams in drumming always said my theory sucked and I should work on my reading they always said I have an ear and the creative aspect of it.

    Second comment from me on this excellent video: after about 4 years, I totally start seeing a grid, and a block of time I can divide into 4, 3, 5, 13, whatever I want. Metric modulation in other words, but not just in theory/on paper, but naturally during playing. And stuff like samba over rock polyrhythms start to feel natural. Still definitely in a heavy learning phase, and I agree that after a few years, in my case 4, the insights become deeper. I’ve also noticed now I focus a lot more on how I sound: in the room, with different bands etc. Ie how loud my chicks are, if my snare tuning complements the band, much more fidelity in this space than in previous years.
    Oh, and I totally STILL work on my grip. :-)

    Absolutely enjoyed every second of this vid! Very well artciulated insights from someone that got through it all. Found this really helpful and inspiring especially now, when things tend to get frustrating a lot of times for me. I really needed to hear this, to see the bigger picture. Have been playing drums for over 2 years now and all of the things you mentioned for phase 1 and 2 happened / are happening to me. Things getting hard, the sense of being "lost" at times, not seeing the progress, not knowing what to practice.... but at the same time the more time I spend with the drums, these tiny musical a-ha moments are happening.... as you mentioned, you just gotta hang in there and keep coming back no matter what. You can have a great session one day and absolutely suck the next day. But I guess you just need to focus your attention on the highlights and even if you suck at least you know what to practice to get better next time. It is a life-long journey and you only get what you give. Sometimes it is also great to look back and appreciate how far you have come. Anyway, just wanted to share my piece. Keep up the excellent content and stay safe! :)

    Thanks for this video, Adam. I've been stuck going back and forth between what you call Phase 2 and 3 for a year or two now, this was really inspiring to get me the next steps. Love it!

    There is something raw and genuine about your insights that I love. I always thought that there was a lot more to learn from drums than drums themselves and that vid just gave shape to what was abstract in my head. It is obvious that you lived through those steps and decided to take a step back and try to explain for the newcomers what they were facing. Every joy and frustration of being a drummer transpires through your explanations. It is truly a good video. In the full sense of the word. Good because it is of a good quality. Because it is helpful. Because it's insightful. And because it's aim is the success of those who watch it. Thank you for having taken the time to watch your own journey from afar in order to help us. You are a good teacher.
