This show is amazing, I hope BBC and HBO never cancel it, and actually complete the story of all the books.
Well it's already renewed for season 2, and if they're doing one book every season it's going to end with season 3, so I'm fairly confident we're going to get there. Plus it helps that it's a joint production between the BBC and HBO, meaning they're splitting the costs, otherwise it could have been prohibitively expensive if it wasn't extraordinarily popular from the get go.
what worries me is that it doesn't attract more attention . the movie made some damage obviously . back then people relied on the impression of book readers and many of them disliked the movie ,mainly because it completely screwed the ending , the CGI was fantastic, better than the show by far , and the cast was better than the show as well ( daniel craig was a book reader himself and his acting is on point, Nicole Kidman was literally the one actress every single book reader imagined as mrs coulter while reading the books, the actress playing Lyra was good , the gypsies casting was on point better than the show) . the storyline of the movie is what made it fail /
this is now impacting the show , people are being discouraged to watch when they remember how disappointing the movie was . the first 3 episodes kind of left me indifferent but having read the books i know this means nothing, the best storylines havent been told yet so i will only judge it after the last episode of the season .
they miscast lee scoresby in a big way ( he's supposed to be old, with a strong texan accent but the actor cast is neither old nor does he have a strong southern accent, ageism is not cool ) so now all my hopes reside in the witches and the polar bears
@@liliks14 I'm sorry but your nostalgia for the movie is speaking there. In 12 years visual effects have come a long way, and they're most definitely not better in the movie. The visual effects studio behind the show is the same Framestore that did them for the movie. Everything else you mentioned is subjective, but not this one, as Framestore's work here is at least on par with their work in the movie and often surpassing it, despite the higher volume and smaller budget per shot for the show (advancements in technology make that possible).
@@Ebosan87 yes i have nostalgia for the cast , the settings and the CGI ( why does it matter that the same company did it ? they did a less better job with the show period , where's the steampunk ? the daemons roaming the screen ? nowhere) , but NOT the story . i hated the way the movie told the story , and story is what matters most . what the show has more than the movie at this point , is that those events are still to come and they have more time to show them to us . the show has the chance to fix what the movie did wrong : the ending
@@Ebosan87 having read the books will probably ruin it for me . i totally envy you non-book readers . i don't wish you to be in our spots ( book readers)
3:55 "I break everything, but not an alethiometer". LMAO
she is a child afterall haha
The British are known for attention-to-detail, that’s why their TV shows, movies, and documentaries are always so immersive, and the stories, very believable.
Just don't watch the new BBC 'War of the Worlds' !
ISeddon I’m actually watching it at the moment. Lol. And I like it. Despite the negative reviews.
As a show it's not bad but as a show based on a book its horrible XD
I have to agree! I'm British myself, and the tv shows are amazinb!!
3:58 "I break everything but I did not break the alethiometer." Best quote ever.
I am so thankful that we're getting this adaptation. What a time to be alive.
Whoever built the alethiometer did an amazing job, looks exactly how I imagined it from the books.
Oh really now
Thats the only thing i was disappointed by...my book had one on the cover and it ingrained into me
I think the 2007 alethiometer looks better. The symbols are colorful and easy to read.
I agree. I think the movie one looked goofy and for kids, this one looks like it actually powerful and important.
I like the new square design, but the alethiometer will always be round in my head
WHAT WHAT WHAT I LOVED THESE BOOKS WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I was always so dissapointed that they didn't make the other two books into films but THIS SHOW looks TEN TIMES BETTER than the film did!!! This HAS to get through all three books. It has to. I have to reread the series now!!
They are working on them now!!
So much dedication went into this wow
Lol, that guy was focusing so hard on saying 'pocket watch' rather than 'compass'.
He is full of himself.
HOLY COW THIS IS AMAZING!!! MY MIND IS BLOWN!!!! for the first time I can totally see the appeal of a creative job outside of being an author lol! Being a set designer would be SO COOL!!!! I can't believe they made a whole town!!!!!!! A WHOLE TOWN!!!!!! also it looks like everyone involved is having an absolutely fantastic time!!! THESE SETS ARE INCREDIBLE OMGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They made whole towns in Game of Thrones too
The attention to detail is what makes this show so good.
2:23 Hi Dudley Dursley !
Wtf?!??! No way!!!! That's Harry Melling?!?!?
@@princessthyemis yup it is :D
@@princessthyemis whoa
i screamed at the tv when i saw him and my dad went “no too skinny” lol
@@jessicamillican711 same dad lol hahaha,
He said "Oh so he's thin now"
I like that roar on 5:31 do anybody else like that roar
One of the best show on TV ever !.Thx to BBC and HBO !
Just seen this show for the second time. it so underrated. very good adaptation of the books. looking forward to season 2!
It's so obvious they put a lot of care and effort into this and I love it! They did such a great job!
LOVE THE SHOW!!!!!!CANT WAIT FOR THE FOURTH EPISODE!!!!!!!!!😁😁😁😁
Iorek Hype Mode
IOREK BYRNISON
Ruth wilson Perfect ♥
I'm loving the show. The amount of detail is incredible. The cast is amazing. Please keep up with this fantastic work.
100 gram of unspecified Grøt (Mash/Mush) for 15 Norwegian Kroner, what a bargain 😄
The shoulder bag kept breaking because of the weight of that instrument like WOW WHAT how is that thing THAT heavy
So amazingly done.. Blew me away. Love the cast, sets, adaptation.. Brilliant.
So how much is a replica of that Alethiometer going to cost me?
I want one as well.
Probably a lot
yep i want mine too
Prefer the one from the movie. This one look "tinny".
Best show ever. Cant wait for the next episode
Just watched episode 1. Amazing!
Can't wait for season 2!!!
now i want to base my whole aesthetic on this.... make steampunk stuff... this looks SO amazing!
Lin Manuel is my hero!
May they go all the way through the book of dust.
Loved what you did with the show! It was so impressive!!!! I was touched so many times! I adore it! You can see how much work and love went into it. Cant wait for the third season! 🙈 Thank you! ✨😍
I wish I could act on TV and movies. I go to drama classes but my parents, still can’t afford to take time of the drive me to auditions. I love this series! I hope that they then do the Book of Dust if all 3 seasons are a success!
I hope Dafne Keen gets to keep the alethiometer prop.
Honestly my favourite show, well done guys!
Dafne Keen is adorable
Great, great and GREAT.
Such amazing work
Such an underrated show
Beautiful!
you can quibble with the writing, but you can't deny this show looks incredible--the sets in particular make the 2007 movie look cheap by comparison. every single magisterium and oxford interior, every inch of trollesund--you can tell the environments on HDM were just loved to death.
The series overall was amazing but yes, the screenplay was bloody awful. Kept using the same phrases and quips for vastly different characters, and colloquialisms that they just wouldn’t use in that world because they have dæmons instead of internal souls. It showed that the screenplay writer just hadn’t bothered to think about what words and phrases would and wouldn’t fit in a world like Lyra’s.
@@MercurialRed9 it's the game of thrones problem, right? all this gorgeous production design to make a fully visualized world, and then the scripts are just sloppy.
James Cosmo would've been amazing as Dumbledore
the alietheometer is beautiful but I still love the 2007 one
this is amazing
Impeccable and passionate attention to detail along with excellent writing are what make shows a cult show, this will be one of them, up there with GoT because of the effort they have put into this, bravo HBO/BBC!
Spared no expense
I've fallen in love.
Just. WOW!!
OOOH exciting! :)
I love this show, but I wish they did a better job of making it look cold. You could tell it wasn't cold on the set.
great show, and interesting interpretation of the alethiometer though I still prefer the 2007 version, Id love to see if the cast including dafne saw the 2007 movie
What's that written within the Alethiometer? Kuhnraht?
I can't remmebr the name, but it's the name of its inventor:-)
It really looks great so far but the alethiometer kinda sucks. It looks cheap and not like the valuable, powerful tool it is meant to be. Should have made it more like a.... golden compass. That's at least one thing the 2007 movie did right.
tbh i quite like the look of the alethiometer here. i genuinely do not get how it "sucks" -- i get not quite liking it, but it doesn't suck in the way everyone seems to be describing it. i like how compact it is, made-to-travel almost, and the value and glamour of this awesome tool is within the gears and details rather than the exterior? also it's tone-downed aesthetic matches with the rest of the entire vibe of the show, the fantastical elements being naturally integrated and low-key while still being _there_ and important. the book was also never overtly steampunk in its alternate-period-futurism, unlike the film which really leaned into it for what it's worth, which makes it believable that this alethiometer could exist within the visual world of HDM. it's unique, pristine shape also actually makes me genuinely believe that the alethiometer is an entirely unique and special and incomparable _thing_ -- if it were the shape and make of a compass i'd just think "ah it's a compass but fancier". this alethiometer design actually sets it apart from the typical technology in its world -- even in one which is semi-steampunk and fantastical -- again emphasizing its extraordinary-ness, just not in the glamorous fantastical way everyone was expecting. i guess not everyone will see it the same way, but i do respect the showrunners' choice to try something new in its design.
@@Bluey306 I guess it's just that in the books it is also described as a beautiful and valuable object. I mean, only 6 of these were ever made according to the story. One would think that whoever made it would put some effort into making it look special - instead of like a small copper lunchbox.
See recent graduates talking about working on the series: ua-cam.com/video/1fTOEWV8BG0/v-deo.html
They must produce an aletiometer for us🥺
How heavy is the alethiometer? It can’t be heavy enough to break a shoulder bag.
maybe when she's jumping with it or so
If you still need to cast the lunatic that was driven mad with power by the subtle knife. I have some experience. Hmu.
My daughter is named Lyra ❤️... I’m suing you (jk, her name is really Lyra though)
İ wish can be there...
I do prefer the aletheometer in the film, mainly because that's what Philip Paullman accepted as cannon and used it on the front covers of some of the editions
Am I the only one that feels like this is the next game of thrones?
Building *with* his dark materials
Haha
Sorry
I love everything about the show, specially the CGI on Iorek, but the alethiometer is round, i repeat the alethiometer is round.
Golden compass part 2?? Remake.. No way..
What on earth is wrong with the alethiometer? They've described it countless times in the book, AND IT'S ON THE COVER.
The designers ego made him try not to have a similar looking aleitheiometer to the movie. That was disappointing. Bloody minded. The tactile organic design is what made the movie version so appealing. It fits in the hand so well, with precious metal, and crystal, beautiful artwork. Instruments made in the era which produced so much steam punk design, Tartaria(?), would certainly have made something tactile, heavy, precious, shiny, beautiful. He is disingenuous! "It's not" ... Statement is denial, yet confirms exactly his mindset.
My phone is so shit
this show is so mutch better then this sh** of mandalorian
looks like lot of effort has been made, but i did not like it much.. not sure maybe was expecting more fantasy CGI effects with this !
The show never explain why she can use the compass , just whoop another episode she can ! Why ? How ? Did i miss a episode ?
The books do, actually. The show will probably explain it later on. If you want a spoiler:
because Lyra is the child of a prophecy and after she fulfills that, she can't read the alethiometer anymore and has to re-learn it like other readers through years of study.
I HATE LORD ASRIEL FOR KILLING RODGER
Do yourself and go watch ‘atonement’. (If you’re over 18) you’ll feel bad for him again.
Do people actually like these videos while the show is running? To me it kinda ruins the immersion a bit.
I do, though I think it’s mostly because I read the books, so I already know what’s going to happen. It’s neat seeing how they’re bringing a story I love to life, and it also helps tide me over until the next episode, haha
The series: slow cook comfort food, thats the impression I had. Too much production value with mediocre acting and boring dialogues.
The original story and dialogue are far superior. This adaptation has dropped important ideas, and introduced poor dialogue and new scenes that detract from the original story. Why is the alethiometer square? In the book it is described as round. Why is Serafina Pekkala's daemon not a goose? Pointless changes by people who don't seem to understand the book.
Its a series, not a book. If you want to read the book - go for it. Virtually no cinematic adaptation is entirely faithful to the book its sourced from. The fact is that many story elements do not translate well to the different medium. Also scenes must be cherry picked and condensed - there simply is not enough screen time. Anyway, the vast majority of viewers will never read the book - so fidelity to the original story is simply irrelevant ...
@@andrewlockwood6102 I understand good (LOTR) and bad (Hobbit) adaptations. This one is certainly a Hobbit. If time was a factor, why include so many new elements (Mrs Coulter kills a nurse for example) and longueurs?
Fantastic production values and design - but sadly I am not enjoying the show at all. The casting and character design is so far from the characters in the book I just can't get into it.
I cant watch it, The first episode with a Gyption making rap moves just blew it for me. Way too politically correct casting .
Unpopular opinion - show has been kinda underwhelming so far.
**Lin-Manuel pops up in episode 4**
"Just you wait..."
Deborah Ronner he doesn’t tho
It's a strange story pacing-wise I think. I feel like the season will make more sense as a whole after it's finished. Things should start getting exciting with next episode though (and I thought episode 2 was amazing).
@@feyn5869 whoop haha sorry I meant 4 I'll change that now
@@erburu the pacing is definitely an issue for me. 3 episodes in and still in exposition mode may be tad too indulgent for my liking. Having said that, I'm still optimistic for the series in general.
