Yes it's a series based on the books that they made the movie from. But as far as I have watched it you don't need to watch the movie to understand the series. It's pretty much a complete reboot🤔 But its really worth watching, so if you're interested, go give it a try😊

I also think Daemons are the equivalent to Pokémon but with a more spiritual bond (dust) rather than Pokéballs (I guess the bond between trainers and Pokémon in the anime could be the only thing close to dust??)
...uhhh no. Pokémon are separate creatures. Daemons are part of the person - like a manifestation of their soul/consciousness. Read "His Dark Materials" books.
