Mrs Coulter is probably my favourite character, all thanks to Ruth Wilson's amazing acting

Meh, I might be biased, but Nicole Kidman embodied Mrs Coulter much better in the original movie, "The Golden Compass". Too bad religious groups killed the series, because I think the casting was much better in the movie. This Ruth lady "overacts"... and Lin Manuel playing Lee Scoresby is a total miscast, like what were they thinking?

Ruth Wilson portrays her with this constant state of barely repressed psychopathic fury it's actually frightening, as if in any moment she will simply unleash upon someone. Like, there's something so broken about her, like her mind is completey fucked up and spends most of it in a state of walking agony. It gives layers of depths to her, rather than than being something purely malevolent, there's like a real profoundly tragic aspect to her. It's a stunning performance.

I didn’t think much of Mrs Coulter in the books, but I love Ruth Wilson’s portrayal of her! She’s one of my favourite characters in the show. She can be so intimidating but then show a vulnerable side where you almost feel sorry for her. After reading the Book of Dust, you can kinda see why she is the way she is.
Does she appear in "The Book of Dust"? I haven't read it and I'm not able to find much information about it
@@elisabettarrago1406 yeah, she’s in the first book (La Belle Sauvage). You find out a bit more about her family and why she is the way she is.

Fifty Nicole Kidman to one Ruth Wilson. No offence I love Nicole Kidman and was so delighted when she won her oscar but I just think she wasn't right for Marisa. Ruth Wilson was PERFECT in this role. She gave the Marisa to the part. Nicole Kidman was only Mrs. Coulter.
Brilliant series on HBO. Can't wait to see season 2. Ruth Willson is fantastic as Mrs Coulter. Nicole Kidman played her in The Golden Compass and was very good too, but Wilson rocks.
In the UK, we have season 2 currently airing, I'm not spoiling it, but ruth Wilson is brilliant

I love the changes they made from the books with Mrs. Coulter
Ruth’s acting is soooo on point check this out. . I showed this show to my mother, someone who is not a tv person. She only watches her novelas so she’s not use to watching shows like this, sci-fi. From the very first episode when mrs.coulter met Lyra my mom was already suspecting something but didn’t say anything. Episode two comes around and when mrs.coulter was washing Lyras hair my mom said . . . “That’s her mother isn’t she” I was blown away.
And I wish mrs coulter and Lyra be together and I know deep down mrs coulter is a good person somewhere I really want Lyra to help mrs coulter become a better person course I think Lyra can help her
She does love Lyra and I know what she did was wrong but she was just upset she was just taking it out on Lyra and it’s all the mansturium fault just remember Lyra and the witches won’t let the mansturum win And I don’t think Mrs coulter and Borieal will let them iever well I hope not and it doesn’t mean she doesn’t love Lyra if she didn’t love her she wouldn’t keep saving her and just remember she has been threw a lot I mean I don’t think she had great parents And Asriel seduced her and then abandoned her grieving widow and leaving with a child of wedlock And I really hope Lyra and mrs coulter can be together and Mrs coulter And Boreal And I really hope there’s going to lots of sobs story’s speacialy between Mrs coulter Boreal and Lyra speacialy mrs coulter and Lyra in His dark materials in season 2And season 3 and I know Mrs coulter was hissing screaming I think at season 2 but she wanted to know about who is Lyra Blaqua is she does need to know about her safety

My favourite character in the series.
That’s interesting. I never saw Mrs coulter as a control freak I know she wants power but I think that’s more about just wanting everything she wants in life and having a bad temper if she doesn’t. I saw her obsessiveness and need for control coming from the deep rooted trauma of having to give a baby up which can absolutely destroy women. And upon meeting her and having Lyra in her grasp it has made her motherly love and yearning all the more intense and desperate.
It's not just giving up Lyra. It's coming from an abusive home and learning how to control and take pain. It's suppressing her hatred of men who want to steal her ideas and work because the women of their world are viewed as unworthy to learn academia. She had to get special permission to do so.
@@moonchild712 yeah you’re right. I think I said to someone before that a lot of it is a defensive mechanism in a way, it’s like her aggressiveness comes from only being able to handle the men and the power with having that side.

You can't decide whether to hate her or love her or love to hate her or whatever and won't even care because in case of mrs coulter i think it doesn't matter because whether you feel or not for her anything but 100% you can't ignore her and can't stop yourself by being fascinated , admire her and THIS IS SOMETHING . Amazingly written and played character.

Ruth Wilson does an amazing job with probably one of the most complicate characters I've ever seen... cant wait to see how she does with Coulter in Season 3!
Marisa Coulter is my favorite character of the entire saga, for her character harnest the highest level of complexity while being the most uncompromising.
So she was the scale on which I would rate the quality of this show...
And for me it is a complete and utter disaster.
The arriviste woman who won over the poshest society looks like a farm girl. The ruthless visionary, the brilliant scholar, the ambitious politician, the stealthy spy, the master of humans emotions, the brutal warrior, the trained survivor, the absolutist mother, the ambivalent lover have been brushed aside for a cliché hysterical femme fatale.
This show needed the highest class of actors and writers and I got mid tier, imo.
So I can't watch the show, for I fear the world I envisioned would be replaced by what I consider being sloppy imagery, in comparison of the masterpiece that is Pullman's saga.
I’m just gonna say it: 3:40 was hilarious.

Ever since I read the third book I always had this vivid image of her going after lyra in a classic safari outfit, with the pocketed-belted jacket, bulb-sided trousers and the tall leather boots. And there she was in season 2 wearing almost exactly those things.
I can't really remember HOW I got that image of her. Surely Pullman didn't describe her in OUR world's terms, so pretty sure that wasnt it. So strange.

season 3, they may make that a thing, depending on if they follow Lyras reaction in the first few chapters. If they don't? Maybe Lyra might have a forgiveness scene
I hope that happens soon too, that would predict of how season 3 is going to go.

I'll start by saying I'm a fan of the original movie, "The Golden Compass". That said, I enjoy watching the TV series, but there were a few mistakes:
Nicole Kidman IS Mrs Coulter - not this Ruth lady!
And Lin Manuel should not have played Lee Scoresby, total miscast IMO!

@@lem1738 What makes you think I haven't read the books years ago?? Even Pullman, the author, said Nicole Kidman was perfect for the role, so that should tell you everything you need to know. I'm no where near boomer age (although I wish I could be living the retired life right now lol).
@@00inwiththenew00 Pullman is also a producer of the show himself unlike the movie and Ruth Wilson was their first actress of choice for picking Mrs. Coulter - should also tell you all you need to know. Nicole was an iconic Coulter, so is Ruth. Nicole was only able to give Mrs. Coulter a shallow allure due to time constraints of the movie. Ruth gives her emotional layers and a feral streak - I can’t imagine any other actress being able to give Mrs. Coulter the unapologetically feral, dangerous, and charming performance that Ruth gave, she’s an impeccable Mrs. Coulter mind you

Mrs. Overbite. How many slow motion "bad-ass" walks of this woman can you put in each episode. I tried to watch the show but it is brutally padded and drawn out. 90% filler, 10% action then cut to black, only to do it over the next episode. Such a waste of a fantastical world and great cast (besides the ugly in the wrong lighting girl from Seinfeld)
